She had known the second he had picked up Julie's goldfish Mr. Henry.
That's the first moment she had been extremely attracted to him.
He had done something that only her husband would have done.
Adrian Monk was the opposite of what she was physically attracted to...maybe that's why she had brushed the feelings aside for soo long.
Who was she kidding...she had damn well denied it with every fiber of her being.
People knew she cared for him. They knew she was protective of him...but she had always been able to laugh at his faults with others.
It hadn't taken that long though...for her to know that she loved him. To admit that she loved him.
Natalie suddenly smiled to herself when she remembered the moment she knew he really would protect her.
Two way street.
When he started to clean her face with his wipes...she had thought it was incredibly adorable. He had actually focused on her...he had paid attention to her.
Something in her had been extremely flattered at the action.
She couldn't have taken her eyes off of him if she had wanted to. But he looked up and away from her...but she had just continued to look and marvel at him.
After all these years she still considered him amazing and incredibly smart. But in those first few months...she had been truly blown away by his abilities.
The sudden wave of heat traveled through her body as the recent feel of him intimately joined with her making her admit that he had amazed and blown her away in a new and most definitely incredible way.
She felt a flush again take hold as she remembered the way he touched her.
For years she had thought of him as a little boy in a man's body.
That illusion had been firmly and irrevocably shattered.
He was very much a man. The one area where she would have thought him insecure or even shy, he had been the exact opposite.
He had been sure that morning. More than sure.
The first two times she had been the one in control, this morning...this morning had proved that Adrian was not as shy and inexperienced as she thought.
And he had barely done anything other than touch her more intimately than she thought he could touch anyone. It was...highly erotic to her.
Maybe that's why her body reacted so severely at his touch. The very fact that he had touched and caressed her had driven her excitement higher than any other man ever had.
Because she knew what it meant that he was able to do that with her.
Feeling his skin against her own was by far one of the sensations she knew she would never tire of.
Knowing what it took for him to even take off his shoes in public... and then watch him as she undressed in front of him, letting him watch and not look away once...well...it would drive any woman hot.
Sharona had taken the confession of her intimacy with Monk quite differently than she had thought...but her reaction brought to the forefront what people would think when they found out.
Was it really that crazy?
Ok.
She had always TRIED to think it was crazy...but...was it really that weird?
For them to be an actual couple?
People usually assumed they were. Way before it was actually a possibility.
Granted, there was an age difference...but honestly it wasn't that huge a distance. Thirteen years wasn't that big a deal. She knew women who were married to men over 20 years older.
Despite how most people described him...he wasn't as wooden and stiff as people say he is.
She had seen him laugh, really laugh.
Granted it was once out of joy that Ambrose wasn't dying...but she had seen and heard it and marveled at him.
There were moments...moments where she could see the man he had been before Trudy died.
His quirks would slip away...and she would see him...she would see Adrian Monk.
It hadn't been a year that she had been working with him that she had seen it.
Not even a year and she had seen him be happy, singing, whistling...and then that stupid woman had to impersonate Trudy.
He had been better. She had never seen him so happy. And she had been wracked with guilt...and anger.
She had never told him that she had started to feel anger towards Trudy. That she would do something like that to the man she supposedly loved. A man that she knew had dedicated himself to her even after death. His loyalty and love for her stopping him from seeing anyone else the same way he saw her.
But she loved him...loved him even that early...and knew she could never keep what she had seen from him. Because you don't hide something like that from the person you love.
It didn't matter what other people said, or what other people wrote...she had seen the real him...and he was perfectly normal.
She smiled to herself at the thought. Looking back on it now it did seem incredible...that in less than a year as being his assistant he had started to get better.
But he had.
All those years ago...something had finally clicked...something had started to make him better.
What had changed in those first months?
Could it have been her?
Was she the reason?
Could she really have caused it? Could she have been the reason he had started to improve?
Wouldn't that be something?
Something really incredible.
With those words she looked down at her stomach...imagining if it was swollen.
Memories of Adrian playing with Tommy Graizer in the grass sprang to her memory. The way he had not cared about dirtying his suit, and touching nature...the way he had loved Tommy...
Natalie felt the tears slipping down her face again, the memory of the pain she felt for him then...God...she had been terrified of him raising a child...and now she knew he had already begun changing for Tommy.
Now...the thought of a little boy with his smile and his eyes...
I'm an idiot! If I had jumped his bones that first day! That FIRST...DAY! But no...I had to stop that voice in the back of my head that compared him to Mitch. All this time wasted.
Hindsight was always 20/20.
The problem was that she had just fallen more and more in love with him. He had become her best friend...the person she knew she couldn't live without.
Natalie rolled her eyes at herself.
Ok so she was in more denial than Adrian Monk. Really it made sense. She had to live in denial. Because facing the truth all these years later was beyond monumental.
It was Earth shattering!
Yes...he had his phobias still.
But that morning...he hadn't jumped away from her.
He didn't retract into himself like he did the first two times. Technically...he had only retracted the second time it had happened.
Something told her she needed to find out why the first time he hadn't reacted that way...but the second time he had.
He had called her beautiful. Once.
He hadn't said while he was looking at her, but the most hideous representation of her that could ever exist.
But he had said it...and meant it.
And...ok...normally she dated a certain...type. But if there had been any denial after she had seen him in a police uniform about her attraction to him...it was gone after that day.
Yes...she had a thing for a man in uniform. Which...would just mean she had a thing for a man in uniform - but she hadn't dated any officers at the precinct. And there were plenty of good looking men.
But seeing Adrian Monk in a uniform...well...she hadn't been able to stop looking at him that day.
And going undercover as Franky DiPalma. Seeing him dressed up like a gangster in that suit...when that Lola turned back to look at her as she escorted him into the back...the look on her face of triumph...
So jealousy of another woman touching him didn't start with Sharona.
Despite the women that Adrian had been attracted to...Leyla Zlatavich and Sherry Judd...she encouraged him to go after them knowing it was never going to happen.
Not because he wasn't good enough for them...but the exact opposite.
Neither of the two women barely knew him.
But she knew him.
Knew that he needed to feel confidence. Needed to know that he was more than just his ability to hunt down criminals.
And for a tiny bit it had worked. But the crash afterwards...the way he would just plummet down.
She hated seeing him like that.
"Hey! We're here!" Sharona said again finally grabbing her attention.
Natalie finally undid her seat belt, which she now understood why Adrian was constantly afraid of being driven with the way Sharona drove.
Adrian might have been highly exaggerating when she drove...but now Natalie understood why.
Sharona said nothing as they made it up to the door and Natalie unlocked the door.
The sight that greeted both women made both of them suddenly shift into mom mode.
"What happened?!" Sharona barely kept from screaming as both women tossed down their purses and ran towards Julie and Benji.
Benji was caressing Julie's back as she continued to cry, looking up at his mother he had no look of guilt, making Sharona feel a sense of relief.
Benji showed his guilt on his face when he was at fault.
"Julie! Julie...what happened?!" Natalie was at her daughters side in seconds.
Julie's arms had been crossed as she was leaning down on them as she sat next to Benji, Natalie had bent down to look up into the crying eyes of her daughter and felt her heart lurch.
She had been so wrapped up in her problems that she had been neglecting Julie these past few weeks.
"Sweetheart I'm soo sorry. I know I haven't been there lately because of..."
"It's not that mom." Julie cut off her mother and looked up at her mother.
And the way her daughter's blue eyes looked into her own, Natalie felt her heart stop.
This wasn't a teenage thing, or a college thing.
This was something entirely different.
Natalie started to feel her heart galloping a mile a minute.
"Julie...you need to tell her." Benji encouraged as he continued to caress her back for support.
Natalie glanced at Benji and how he was physically being intimate with her daughter with how he touched her, her mind instantly knew that Benji wasn't the reason Julie was acting this way and felt a wave fo relief.
Julie sniffled and looked down as she spoke. "Officer Night came by earlier..."
Both Natalie and Sharona felt their spines straighten as the five words. Both instantly feeling their instinctive mother bear hackles raise.
"He...he grabbed me by the throat..." Julie's voice faltered, the confidence and determination to tell her mother what happened evaporating as she realized they were all very much in danger.
But Julie's words made Benji's jaw tighten, Sharona's eyes to close as imagined what Julie would say next, and Natalie's blood to boil.
Yet all three of them said nothing, waiting for Julie to continue.
"He...he thought I was keeping you away from him. He squeezed my throat and...he threatened me." Julie looked up into her mother's eyes.
Natalie stared back, knowing Julie would never make something like this up. Not ever.
That just wasn't Julie.
"Did he...did he touch you?" Natalie said barely able to breath. Someone had touched her baby and the rage and hatred inside her roared to life in a way she had never experienced before.
But Julie shook her head slightly.
"He threatened me saying he could hurt you...and Mr. Monk." Julie had to stop herself from slipping and saying 'dad'.
But that's how she felt. While her mother had been dating John she had become considerably closer with the only constant man that had been in her mother's life.
Adrian Monk had become family.
He wasn't just a friend...as many times as she herself had said he was her mom's boss...she knew better now. She wasn't a child repeating what her mother told her.
Inside...she knew that he had become her dad.
Friends would laugh with her about the things he did, but then they would say things like 'my dad does that too' or 'mom makes me spy on dad when she's out so he doesn't burn down the house.'
After years of hearing things that she had just assumed she did because her mother told her to because of Mr. Monk's phobias...she realized that most of her friends were...doing the same things she was - but with their dads.
She had fought the word and what it meant for a long time.
Not because of what people would think...she didn't care about that.
She was afraid of what HE would think.
If she had one insecurity about anything in this world...it was that she didn't know how he felt towards her.
She cared about him. She loved him. But did he feel the same about her?
Did he worry about her?
She worried about him.
"He said Mr. Monk was ok now. Is he really?" Julie asked her mother and then looked over at Sharona.
"He is. Sweetheart...can you pull back your hair?" Sharona said as she got closer and kneeled down next to Natalie who was crying and trying to control her breathing.
Sharona knew Natalie was going to explode soon and Sharona knew what would be asked of Julie at the station. Better to do it here in the privacy of the house then there.
Julie sat up slightly and moved her hair back, showing the bruised skin forming on both sides of her throat.
"Oh my god." Natalie whispered clamping a hand over her mouth as she saw the evidence of what that bastard had done to her baby girl.
"Mom, I'm ok. I was worried about what he would do to you and Mr. Monk."
Sharona was about to snap a shot of the bruises on Julie's neck with her phone when Benji reached into his pocket and gave her his phone.
"Use mine." Benji said handing over his expensive new iPhone. A phone he had gotten as a present from graduating high school. A phone he never let her touch.
"Mom it's not your fault." Julie said distracting Sharona's thoughts and making Sharona realize that Julie knew her mother was blaming herself.
"i should have listened to Adrian. I never should have gone out with him. God! I'm going to kill him." Natalie stood straight up and grabbed the house phone which was sitting on the side table next to the couch.
Sharona carefully moved to take a photo of Julie's neck and said nothing as she moved Julie's hair aside. Her own anger skyrocketing at the idea of someone threatening the girl.
"Mom..."
"Leland..." Natalie was already on the phone with the Captain. And from the short time that Sharona had known Natalie, she had never once heard her call the Captain by his first name.
Whatever was about to happen...Sharona knew it wasn't going to be by the book.
Whoever this John guy was, apparently it was gonna take a personal favor from the Captain to have something done about him.
"He said Mr. Monk couldn't get back on the force without inside help. He said 'bad things happen to good people' if I said anything to mom." Julie said to Sharona.
Sharona looked into Julie's eyes and saw the fear the girl felt. Julie had stopped in almost everyday to see Adrian when Sharona was taking care of him, talking with him and telling him about her day.
Julie was sweet, and obviously loved Adrian...which made like the girl immensely. She hadn't really talked much with her personally, but Sharona knew from what she had seen that Julie was a good kid.
The fact that someone had harmed her and threatened her made Sharona sick to her stomach.
"He's not gonna do anything." Benjy said firmly, "he may think he's untouchable because he's a cop, but the Captain knows you and knows you wouldn't lie about something like this. He won't get away with it."
Sharona jerked her head back in shock, "This guys a cop? How do you know?" Looking at Benjy who Julie was also looking at in confusion.
"Ma!" Benjy gave a look of 'not now.' But when looked over at Julie, she too was giving him a look that said 'you better explain!'
Benjy stared at her a second before he muttered, "I've been visiting the station talking with Randy Disher."
"Wait! You've been talking to Randy?! Why?!" Sharona was starting to get a bad feeling in her stomach.
"Ma! REALly not the time!" Benji was getting upset as his mother for wanting to discuss what he had been doing.
"So Randy told you my mom was dating John?" Julie asked, not certain she liked the fact that Benjy wasn't telling her how he knew.
Benjy sighed as he looked at his mother and then at Julie.
"Not really. I've been talking to some of the guys on the force. I..." Benjy looked at his mother then, knowing he couldn't keep what he'd been doing from her anymore, "I asked Randy to help me prep for the entrance exam."
Sharona shook her head...not understanding how Randy could help Benjy with an entrance exam. Not that Randy was stupid but...the only thing Randy was good at was...
Benjy saw the second his mother understood exactly what he had been doing, and knew that his mother was going to make a scene even at the most inappropriate time.
God help them all.
