Leland knew something had changed with his friend when he shook Jessica's hand and thanked her for helping him. The little smirk he gave as he looked from her to the gifts in his hands would have seemed normal - had Monk begun wiping his hand with a wipe or on his clothes as he did when Natalie gave him no option.
To say that he had been acting slightly off was an understatement.
The salesman had basically been touching his hand with the ring for over ten minutes and not once had the discomfort of having the man's germs on his hand dissuaded Monk from jumping away or letting go of that thing.
An engagement ring.
Glancing over at who he considered his best friend Leland had been highly suspicious for weeks about the way Monk and Natalie were acting, but add to the suspicious behavior that Monk had bought an engagement ring without any signs of a romantic relationship forming between the two and Leland was left with absolutely no idea why Monk had bought an engagement ring.
But at the moment Leland didn't care about any of that.
All he cared about was that his friend was back. He wasn't frozen.
He was speaking. Walking.
He was alive again.
Nothing had made him feel more uselsss than seeing him revert back to the state he had been after Trudy died.
Whatever had happened to bring him back from that abyss...he would be forever grateful.
So how in the world could soo much have changed without him noticing that Monk bought an engagement ring.
Getting the pendant for Julie wasn't really that unusual, he remembered when Monk would buy gifts for Benjy when he was a little boy. He had never seen him buy a gift for anyone since then.
Something might have happened there.
They arrived back at the station, Jessica having told them she would need time to have the central office look up records.
So it became a waiting game once more.
As Monk was looking at the board with the evidence he himself had arranged to be able to review the information, Leland picked up the ringing cellphone without looking.
"Yeah." He said as he continued to glance up from his paperwork as he looked at Monk.
Monk turned for a second to look at the Captain and stopped at the look on Leland's face.
"WHAT?!" Leland screamed way after his face had become bright red - showing physically how angry he had become.
Whatever had happened it made Leland stand up looking as if he was ready to rip someone's head off.
"When?!" Leland asked, his aggravation showing instantly as he stood up giving Monk and Randy a glare that showed something had happened.
But it wasn't until a her name came out of his lips did Monk react.
"Natalie you tell her to take photos and wait until we get there!" Leland said as he began to put on his suit jacket as he held the phone between his shoulder and face.
"What happened?" Monk asked as he approached Leland's desk as Natalie continued to speak to Leland.
"Natalie...I promise! Right now I'm gonna make sure both you and Julie are safe first. I'm sending detectives to take her statement and we'll be there as soon as I make sure he's taken into custody."
Monk felt his hair stand on end. Somehow...he knew the person Leland was talking about was Officer Night.
And if it was Officer Night...
Leland glanced up from the phone and saw the look in Monk's eyes...and he knew he had made the connection.
"Natalie I gotta go..." Leland tried to put down the phone and finish putting on his jacket, but it was too late.
Monk was already out his office door.
"MONK!" Leland screamed as he finally was able to put down the phone and put on his jacket.
Randy of course still didn't understand what was happening. But followed his partner without hesitation.
But Monk wasn't about to be reasoned with. Somehow...someway...his fear of Night hurting Natalie coming to fruition.
He moved quickly through the rooms, he knew exactly where Night would be, and when he saw the laughing face of the officer as he joked around with his buddies...all Monk saw was red.
Maybe he made a noise, but John looked over at him and his face dropped.
Before anyone knew what had happened. Monk had sailed across the room and hit John with a strength none of the young officers had ever seen.
The force of the hit was so strong it knocked both of them over, but Monk wasn't finished.
Grabbing the man's uniform, Monk laid several punches to the man's face and didn't stop when blood spurted on him and hands began to pull him away.
"MONK! MONK!" Leland screamed as he and Randy pulled Monk away from Night, as Night finally began to fight against Adrian.
The look of pure rage on Adrian's face was seen by all of the officers that pulled John up and held him back from trying to retaliate against Monk.
"NIGHT! If he hadn't of swung on you...I would've!" Leland said as he turned and grabbed Night out of the arms of his fellow officers who immediately put their hands up and out of the captain's way as he grabbed Night with his own two hands.
"Your lucky he doesn't even know what you did...because if he did...a bloody nose would be the least of your problems." Leland whispered the words with a glare that told John to wipe the smirk that had formed on his face at seeing Monk being ripped away from him off.
"Randy...escort Officer Night into an interrogation room. You're going to explain to my partner and me why Julie Teeger has a bruised neck saying that you made it that way."
It took a second for Monk to understand what Leland had said...but when he did it seemed like everyone else distanced themselves from John.
But Adrian Monk...Adrian Monk felt himself trembling with an anger he had never felt before as he moved to get at Night once more.
"You touched Julie?"
Most of the officers looking at each other in silent communication at Monk's question. If John had touched Julie Teeger...they weren't going to stop Monk a second time.
Monk's mind was jumping to so many scenarios that made every fiber of his being want to scream in anger and pain.
"What's the matter Monk? Wanted mother and daughter to fuck all to yourself? They are both pretty nice pieces of ass..." John barely managed to get out the last word before the fist from Adrian's arm hit him soo hard he knocked Night out cold on the department locker room floor.
But Leland grabbed Monk and dragged him away to his office before he killed John in front of a department full of cops.
Monk was screaming to let him go, but Leland knew that if he did Monk wouldn't be able to practice in the state...let alone in San Francisco.
When back in the Captain's office Monk was bouncing off the walls.
"DID YOU HEAR HIM?! DID YOU HEAR WHAT HE SAID?!" Monk's anger and caged behavior ten times worse than when that murdering disc jockey had said those horrible things about Trudy.
Because the idea of that...piece of garbage...talking about Julie...HIS Julie like that...it made...it made him want to vomit!
"I'm sorry I couldn't help you Captain. I couldn't even believe what he was saying...it was as good as a confession of sexual assault."
"RANDY! Look...Monk...we don't know what happened! All I know is that Natalie called me saying she found Benji consoling Julie...and that Night grabbed her by the neck and threatened her. Now that's all I know...so don't go beating yourself up for something we DO NOT KNOW happened...ok?" Stottlemeyer tried to keep Monk from coming apart at the seams. Which in all honestly he was barely able to do.
If one of his officers touched Julie like that he was going to have to check himself because he'd known that girl since she was twelve years old. And that made her family after all these years.
Someone had hurt his family and it was from someone that should have been protecting them instead. And from the look on his best friends face, he was starting to realize that she was more than just family.
It was an unspoken sentiment. Everyone knew Julie was unofficially Monk's daughter.
"Leland...if he hurt her..." Monk twitched and gave him a look of sadness and pain that rivaled the day Trudy was murdered.
"I know Monk."
And the scary part was...Leland knew if Night had done something to Julie like they suspected...the three of them would have ended up in handcuffs.
"Look...let's just go over to Natalie's and hear...and see...what John did. We might be jumpin' the gun here. Maybe it's not soo bad as we think it is." Randy waved his hand and arm around between the two...trying to reason with them and be as optimistic as possible. Despite everything in the back of his head screaming that if that jerk had touched Julie in a sexual way...HE was going to lose his badge.
Julie and he might not be that close...but she was as much a part of his family as Monk and the Captain were.
"Randy's right..." Leland sighed out and looked over at Monk, "I told Natalie we'd be there as soon as we made sure Night couldn't hurt them. Luckily you took care of that for us." Leland and Monk moved towards the door as Randy turned joining them with a smirk suddenly on his face.
"Nice punch by the way." Randy said to Adrian.
"I lost control." Monk said with a dark look in his eyes.
"Yeah well...you love Julie. Any dad would have lost his mind hearing what he said." With that Randy left the room in front of Leland and Adrian, who shared a look after Randy's statement.
Leland slowly smirked at Monk who had this look of shock on his face.
"Dad?"
The way Monk questioned the word, the way he looked startled at the title, it said it all.
Leland slapped a hand on Monk's back which oddly didn't startle him for once - maybe in too much shock - and said a phrase he never thought he'd say.
"Welcome to fatherhood Monk."
