A/N: I'm back! I got a little sidetracked with my
H/D story, but here's a brand new chapter. This is the chapter where the truth
comes out… Thank you, Frankie and mistress venus, for reviewing the last
chapter. It's greatly appreciated.
Oh, you may have noticed that
the title has changed. I really didn't like the other title. 'Sub Rosa' is a
Latin phrase that means 'under the rose' or secretly. I think it fits.
Piper alternated her gaze between
Prue and Paige. This… was quite unique. Prue had lost control and exposed magic
to Paige – and why? To get the salt. As if that wasn’t enough, Paige was
apparently a witch. Why did things have to be so complicated in their family?
“You’re a witch?” Prue repeated.
“Yeah,” Paige said, “but not like
you. I’m kind of into Wicca, but I don’t have any powers, really.”
Piper frowned. That just
complicated things even more. “But you didn’t freeze,” Piper said.
“Freeze?” Paige questioned.
“Yeah, Piper has the power to
freeze things,” Prue explained. “Phoebe can see into the future.”
Things were quickly getting out of
control. Piper stood up and turned to Prue. “Prue, could I speak to you in the
kitchen?”
“I think we should–” Prue started.
“Kitchen. Now,” Piper commanded.
Sighing, Prue got up. “I’ll be
right back, Paige.” She then started to follow Piper into the kitchen.
“So, Paige,” Phoebe said, “I’ve
been wanting to ask you a few questions…”
Quite wisely, Prue grabbed onto
Phoebe’s arm and dragged her into the kitchen.
Piper stared at Prue for a long
time before she chose to speak. “What were you thinking?” she said at last.
“Um… this needs some salt?”
Piper was not amused.
“Okay, so I exposed magic to
Paige,” Prue said. “So what? She’s Wiccan, and she has no problem with this.
There’s no damage.”
“But Prue, the point is you exposed
magic,” Piper responded. “You lost control. How could you do that? You’re
always in control.”
“I’ve actually been wanting to tell
Paige that I’m a witch,” Prue admitted. “That might have something to do with
it.”
“Great,” Piper sighed. After a few
moments of silence, she said, “Well, you could have at least given us some
warning.”
“Wait. You’re not pissed at me?”
Prue asked uncertainly.
Piper shrugged. “There’s not much I
can do about it now. No point in agonizing over it.”
Prue raised her eyebrow. “Um… okay.
Who are you, and what have you done with Piper?”
“Hey, I can let things go,” Piper
said indignantly.
“Only after you agonize over it for
a good long time,” Prue responded. “What spawned this change in attitude?”
Piper avoided looking at Phoebe but
still didn’t meet Prue’s eyes. Prue would probably suspect something, but she
certainly wouldn’t figure out what had happened. Not even Prue was that good.
“Nothing, really,” Piper muttered. “You should appreciate this, missy. Now go
back to your lady-love and explain.”
Prue grinned and walked back into
the dining room, leaving Piper and Phoebe alone together. Piper still refused
to look at her young sister and swiftly turned, intending to go back into the
dining room and aid with the explanation.
“Piper,” Phoebe said softly.
“Yeah, Pheebs?”
“Maybe Prue would like to explain
this one on her own,” Phoebe continued.
Piper started to panic. “There’s an
awful lot to explain.”
“Piper, we need to talk.” Piper
froze. “Could you at least face me?”
Piper slowly turned to face Phoebe.
She had seen those soft brown eyes filled with hurt before. She had seen
various intensities burning in the eyes of her sister, and she had often helped
Phoebe to fight through the pain. But now she could offer no comfort to Phoebe.
She couldn’t make the difficulties any easier, for she was far too conflicted
and unsure of herself and her relationship with Phoebe. “I’m sorry,” Piper said
without thinking, speaking her regret for causing the pain she saw now in
Phoebe’s eyes.
“For what? For what we did?”
Piper looked down at the floor,
tearing her eyes away from that pain. She wanted to disconnect herself, but it
didn’t seem to be working. “For what I see in your eyes.”
“And what do you see?” Phoebe
questioned, moving closer to Piper.
“Pain.”
“And…” Phoebe lifted Piper’s chin
up. Piper’s eyes met Phoebe’s again.
“I don’t know, Phoebe,” Piper said.
“I just don’t know.”
With that, she turned around and
ventured back into the dining room.

“You’re like superheroes,” Paige said,
completely awed by all the tales Prue, Piper, and Phoebe had told her. It was
growing rather late, but Paige could have stayed forever at the Manor, just
listening to the tales of the Charmed Ones. She could hardly believe that Prue
had gone through so much. It was even more difficult for her to believe that
Prue had kept this secret for such long time.
Prue made a face. Paige loved when
she did that… it was so cute. “Not really.”
“But you protect innocents from the
forces of evil,” Paige pointed out.
“You make it sound so corny,” Prue
said.
“It does get that way sometimes,”
Piper put in.
“True,” Phoebe murmured. Paige
hadn’t heard much from her since the sisters’ little meeting in the kitchen.
Paige found this to be a little odd, considering Phoebe’s standard attitude,
but it really wasn’t her business to ask.
“You’ve been pretty quiet about
this, Phoebe,” Paige said.
“It’s a rare thing,” Prue said. “Be
thankful for it.”
Phoebe shot Prue a glare. “I think
I’ll tell Paige about the time you got turned into a man,” she pleasantly said.
“You wouldn’t dare,” Prue
challenged.
“Want to bet?”
“You got turned into a man?” Paige
asked.
“Long story, one of many,” Prue
said.
“I’ve got the time,” Paige
responded.
Prue glanced at the clock. “No, you
don’t. I need you bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for tomorrow.”
“Wait. What’s happening tomorrow?”
Paige looked to Phoebe and Piper for answers, but they seemed to be as clueless
as she was.
“Well, since you know about magic
now, I was thinking that I could introduce you to my mother and grandmother,”
Prue said.
“But your mother is–”
“It’s magic, Paige.” Prue winked at
her.
“You can summon the dead?” It
seemed that the sisters would never cease to amaze her.
“That’s right,” Prue responded.
“Now go on home and get some rest.”
Paige pouted, but Prue stood her
ground. “Fine, fine,” Paige sighed dramatically. “But you’re going to see me
off, right?”
“Of course.”

Phoebe had had just about enough.
She had really shared something with Piper, but now Piper was treating it like
some meaningless one-night stand. Okay, maybe Piper did have a right to be
freaked out, but couldn’t she at least talk to her? Phoebe sighed. She had to
give Piper some time. She had to give her some space. Things would work
themselves out, once Piper accepted what they had done.
Damn it, though, she was getting
impatient. A touch of magic couldn’t hurt… could it? Phoebe knew perfectly well
that it could, but there was definitely no harm in looking through the Book.
She’d probably end up just looking, after all. Thinking about that, Phoebe
decided that lying to herself made this much easier.
She didn’t feel all that guilty as
she trekked up to the attic. She felt more anxious than anything. She was
considering doing a truth spell, though she wasn’t quite sure if she really
wanted to hear the truth. What if Piper had been telling the truth when she had
said that she couldn’t love Phoebe that she wanted her to? It was a definite
possibility, but Phoebe had to face it. Yes, a truth spell would be best, and,
hopefully, Piper would eventually forgive her for bringing that on again.
Phoebe stopped at the attic door,
but not because of any hesitation. Someone was in the attic, reading from the
Book. That someone was Piper.
“For those who want the truth revealed,
open hearts and secrets unsealed, from now until it's now again, after which
the memories end. Those who now are in this house will hear the truth from
others’ mouths.”
Phoebe couldn’t believe it. Piper
was performing a truth spell? Oh, the irony! Smirking, Phoebe opened the attic
door and walked in. She pretended to be surprised by Piper’s presence in the
attic. “Oh, hi, Piper,” she said. “I was just coming up to prepare for the
spell. I think Prue’s outside greeting Paige. That is, she’s kissing Paige’s
brain out. Were you preparing for the spell?”
“No,” Piper said. Phoebe had to
give her credit; she did try to fight the spell.
“Well, what were you doing?” Phoebe
questioned as she walked up to Piper.
Piper was forced to answer.
“Reading a spell.”
“Really? What kind of a spell?”
“A truth spell,” Piper said, then
winced. “I didn’t mean to say that. Phoebe, what do you want from me?”
“I want you to love me,” Phoebe
said. She twisted a lock of Piper’s hair around her finger. “You didn’t need a
truth spell for me to say that.”
“I wanted to see if that was really
the truth,” Piper said. She didn’t try to make Phoebe move away. Phoebe could
see the confusion in her eyes, but she could also see a painful need. She knew
exactly how Piper felt. She was feeling the same thing.
“You don’t trust me?”
“I do, but I needed to truly know,”
Piper said. She absentmindedly ran her hand over the page of the Book and
chewed on her bottom lip.
“Why?”
“Because I thought it would make it
okay,” Piper whispered. “I thought if this really was love, then maybe we could
have a chance. I thought we could have something… if you really loved me like
that.”
“And what about you, Piper?” Phoebe
asked. “Do you love me like that?”
“I don’t know,” Piper said.
That was probably the best answer
Phoebe could hope for at the moment. “Piper,” she softly said, “do you want me
to kiss you?”
“Yes,” Piper whispered.
Phoebe silently rejoiced. “Okay.”
She wanted to make this into a tender, significant kiss, so she didn’t just
jump in. Instead, she slipped her one arm around Piper’s waist and brought her
other hand up to brush Piper’s hair out of her face. She traced a path down her
cheek to her jaw with her finger, making the contact light enough to make Piper
shiver. Then Phoebe brought her lips to Piper’s cheek. She laid a small kiss on
that cheek and placed another on the other cheek. Finally, she pressed her lips
against’ Piper’s. She slowly brought her tongue out and caressed the lower lip
of her sister, tasting the slight coppery flavor that had been brought on by
Piper’s nervous habit. Piper parted her lips, and Phoebe gently began to
explore the mouth that she had before tasted yet had still not completely
mapped. She eased out of the kiss in order to ask a question.
“Do you want me to do more?” she
asked.
“Yes,” Piper answered. “Do whatever
you want.”
That glint, the one that Phoebe had
seen roughly a week earlier, was back in Piper’s eyes. “I will.” She went back
to the kiss, allowing her hand to trail up Piper’s thigh and farther. Reaching
the top of the jeans that Piper was wearing, Phoebe popped open the button and
unzipped the zipper. She then pushed her hand down into Piper’s panties and
began to stroke Piper’s clit. Piper pushed against Phoebe’s hand, seeking
release.
“Piper? Phoebe?” Prue called from
somewhere downstairs.
Phoebe and Piper separated quickly
and Piper put herself back in order. She had just done that when Prue and Paige
walked in.
“Ah, here you are,” Prue said.
“Were you waiting for–”
“Let’s get started on the spell,”
Phoebe hastily said.
Prue was obviously too excited to
notice that anything was off. Without another word, she set up the candles.
“They’re going to love you, Paige,” Prue said.
“I hope so.” Paige looked a little
nervous, but she was hiding it fairly well.
“They will,” Prue assured her.
“Here these words. Hear my cry spirit from the other side. Come to me, I summon
thee. Cross now the Great Divide.”
Grams and their mother gradually
appeared in the circle.
“Girls,” Grams said, stepping out
of the circle and solidifying. Their mother followed. “I hope this is just a
friendly visit.”
“Whoa,” Paige said, drawing Grams’
and their mother’s attention.
“Paige, this is my mother,” Prue
said. “Mom, this is Paige Matthews, my girlfriend. Grams, Paige. Paige, Grams.”
“Paige Matthews?” their mother
said. “Girlfriend?”
“You’re dating her?” Grams
incredulously asked.
“Yes, I am,” Prue responded.
“But you can’t do that,” Grams
blurted.
“Why not?” Prue said, anger in her
voice.
“We can’t discuss that,” their
mother said. “But you absolutely cannot date her.”
“Exactly why can’t she?” Phoebe
asked. Prue deserved to hear the truth, whatever it was. Phoebe had a hard time
believing that Grams and their mother were simply against Prue dating women.
There was something more to this.
“Because she’s your sister!” their
mother exclaimed. A horrified look appeared on her face. “I didn’t want to tell
you that.”
“Wait a minute,” Prue said. “Paige
can’t be our sister. That’s impossible.”
“Uh, I think it’s time for us to
leave,” Grams said.
“You’re not going anywhere,” Piper
said. “Now, is Paige really our sister?”
“Yes,” their mother said.
“How can she be our sister?” Phoebe
questioned.
“Sam and I had a child,” their
mother said. “Paige, you were that child.”
“Patty,” Grams hissed.
“I can’t seem to help myself,”
their mother said.
“Exactly what happened?” Piper
inquired.
“After Paige was born, I brought
her to a church,” their mother explained. “I asked a nun to find her a home,
and she did.”
“Why did you do that?” Prue asked.
Their mother and Grams had
apparently realized that they were caught, and so they didn’t need the
encouragement of the truth spell. “Because I didn’t want you three to be denied
your birthright,” their mother said. “And… no one would have accepted her
birth. To have a child by a whitelighter… it was unthinkable.”
At last, Paige spoke. “I’m your
daughter?” Her voice was small and timid, quite the opposite of the person
Paige had proven herself to be. “Prue’s my sister?”
“Yes, Paige, you’re their sister
and my daughter,” their mother said. “You’re also a half-whitelighter. Prue,
have you told her about whitelighters?”
Prue stared at Paige. Her gaze was
empty, as if she was looking at a complete stranger. “Yeah.”
“I don’t know if you’ll have any
Wiccan powers, but you definitely have the power to orb,” Grams said.
“How could you hide this from us?”
Prue said.
“No one could know, Prue,” their
mother said.
“But she’s our sister,” Piper said.
“You couldn’t tell us about our sister?”
“No. We feared the repercussions
and their effect on your powers,” Grams said.
Paige was their sister. Prue too
had committed incest. Maybe it was a family trait. Still, Phoebe felt bad for
Prue and Paige. Not only were they discovering that they had committed incest,
everyone else was discovering it.
Paige abruptly walked over to Prue.
She put her hand on Prue’s arm and concentrated. They all realized what she was
trying to do. They didn’t attempt to stop her ― this was her right, and
they knew it. After a few moments, Paige and Prue disappeared in a swirl of
blue orbs, leaving behind two shocked sisters and two guilty ghosts.
“How did you get us to admit that
truth?” Grams asked.
“Truth spell.”
Phoebe wasn’t sure what more there was
to say, so she said nothing. Silence prevailed.
* * *
Paige’s landing was a bit iffy, but
Prue barely noticed. “We’re sisters,” she numbly said. She didn’t care where
she was. That didn’t matter. What did that matter after the truth that they had
just been told? “And all the things we did… It was…” She couldn’t bring herself
to finish the sentence. To put that label on their deeds made them so dirty, so
wrong. Prue supposed that they were, but those things had meant so much to her.
Paige still meant so much to her.
“I know. I can’t believe it.” Paige
shook her head. “What are we going to do now?”
“There’s really only one thing we
can do,” Prue said.
“Break up,” Paige said. “There’s
really no choice, I guess.”
Indeed, what else were they going
to do? Prue couldn’t exactly run into a church and beg for forgiveness. After
all, the Bible did command Christians to kill witches, and Prue could only
imagine what they would do to a witch who had committed incest. And yet, the words
that Paige spoke hit her hard. Break up. It was final, and it hurt. “I guess.”
She blinked, feeling tears beginning to form.
“This isn’t supposed to be so
hard,” Paige said.
“Well, we weren’t supposed to like
being together,” Prue responded quietly.
“But we did.”
“This hurts,” Prue said, her voice
cracking. She looked up and saw that Paige was also crying.
Paige took a long time to speak.
“Goodbye, Prue.” She orbed out.
Prue let her tears come down full
force. She had no reason to hold them back, nor did she have a reason to not
voice the question that she so desperately wanted Paige to answer. There was
nothing to stop now that she was alone. The only one there to judge her was
herself, yet she tried to suppress the question. She tried, but failed. “Do you
regret it?” she whispered, wishing that she could hear the answer.
No one was there to answer, though.
