Chapter 5 - Emergency
“Nine One One. What’s your emergency?”
“This is Captain James Brass, LVMPD. I need an ambulance,
fast.” He rattled off the address.
“Address confirmed. Sir, what’s the emergency?”
“Caucasian female, mid-forties, extreme abdominal pain.
Fever, vomiting with streaks of blood in it. She’s conscious.”
“Thank you, Sir. The ambulance has been dispatched.”
Jim Brass had come home from work to find Lynne lying on the
bathroom floor, writhing in pain, next to a puddle of vomit. With fear
clenching his gut, he had made the emergency call.
Kneeling beside her, he gently brushed her hair away from
her eyes, and took her hand. “Lynne Baby, what happened? Why didn’t you call
me?”
Her eyes fluttered open, she tried to focus on his face.
“Jim. I didn’t want to bother you at work. Besides, I thought it would pass, it
usually does. It’s never been this bad before.” She gasped and clutched her
belly as a new wave of pain cut through her.
“Wait a minute. This has happened before? When, and why
didn’t I know about it?” Jim felt anger beginning to take hold. He pushed it
away.
“It’s just ... a gallstone.
I get them from ... time to time. Hurts like hell ... for a few hours ...
then it’s gone. I just need a shot ... of morphine, and ... I’ll be fine.” She
was panting, the pain making it hard to breathe.
“Morphine?” Jim was shocked. “Demerol maybe, but not
morphine.”
“No Demerol. Allergic. Gotta be morphine.” Lynne was getting
very agitated.
“Okay, something else I didn’t know. No Demerol. I got it.”
Jim heard the siren of the approaching ambulance. Lynne
tugged on his hand, “Jim ... look after Del. She’ll freak out ... she’s
terrified of ... losing me. Ever since her father ... walked out on us.”
He went to open the door for the EMT’s, thinking, “Del’s not
the only one afraid of losing you, Lynne. I’ll just have to make sure that
doesn’t happen.”
~~~~~
“Jim, I can’t afford to have the surgery here. It has to be
done in Canada. I don’t have any health insurance for here yet, but I’m still
covered in Alberta. I can call my doctor and she’ll put me on the waiting
list.” Lynne was in a bed in Desert Palms Hospital ER. She had been medicated,
the pain was under control.
“Lynne, please don’t argue with me about this. You heard the
doctor, you have a serious infection in your gall bladder, along with the
stones. You need surgery, and you need it today. There won’t be any freakin’
waiting list. I’ll take care of the insurance. Please, let me do this for you.”
Jim fought back tears, seeing Lynne so sick tore at his heart.
Lynne was too weak, too groggy, to argue. “Okay, Jim.
Whatever you want. Tell the doctor I’m ready to sign the papers.” She paused,
then, “I gotta talk to Del. Where is she?”
“Mom, I’m right here.” Del had been sitting on a chair
nearby; she got up and approached the bed, reaching out for her mother’s hands.
Jim, sensing that they needed privacy, said, “I’ll just go
have a word with the doctor.” and slipped out of the cubicle.
“Del, my darling, I need an operation. The doctors have to
remove my gall bladder, because it’s infected and full of stones. It’s a routine
procedure. I won’t even need a huge incision. My point, Sweetie, is that I’m
going to be sick for a little while, but I’ll be okay. You aren’t going to lose
me. Just remember I love you. And, be nice to Jim. He’s pretty upset by all
this.” She kissed her daughter’s hands.
“Okay, Mom. I love you, too. I know Jim’s scared, he’s
totally freaked out. I’ll be nice.” She leaned over and kissed her mother’s
forehead. Lynne could feel her trembling.
Just then, Jim and a nurse came into the cubicle, the nurse
carrying a clipboard with Lynne’s paperwork. He put his hand on Del’s shoulder,
and quietly told her, “Del, your mom has to be prepped for her surgery. Come
with me.” He quickly kissed Lynne, whispering, “I love you, Baby.” Then, he
lead Del out to the waiting room.
~~~~~
Jim sat with Del in the waiting room. Lynne’s surgeon had
just told them that the operation was finished, and had gone well. Lynne was in
the recovery room, and would soon be moved into her own room Jim had paid extra
to get her a private room.
“We’ll be able to see her soon, Kiddo.” He was worried about
Del; she was too quiet, too still.
“Jim, is she really going to be okay? Is she going to make
it?” Del did something then she had never done before; she reached out to Jim
for a hug. He drew her into a fatherly embrace, and stroked her hair.
“Hey, hey, Del. I know how scared you are. Me, too. But,
yes; she’s going to be just fine. Listen to me, Sunshine, your mother is a
survivor, a thriver. She’s strong, Del, very strong. She’s not about to leave
us.” He patted Del’s back, and realized that she was crying on his shoulder.
After a while, she pulled away, wiping her face with her fingers. She stood up
and walked over to the vending machine.
“Hey, Jim, got any change? I’m thirsty.” He smiled to
himself as he bought her a soda; Del was okay.
~~~~~
Released from the hospital 2 days after the surgery; Lynne
recovered rapidly at home. The start date for her new job had to be pushed
back, but her new supervisor was both understanding and accommodating. She
spent a lot of time resting, reading, knitting, and even watching TV. Through
it all, she was happy to rve rve a new closeness between Jim and Del. From the
start they had liked each other, and had grown to love each other, but always
with a slight awkwardness. That awkwardness was gone now. The father who had
lost his daughter, and the daughter who has lost her father had ned ned to
truly trust each other. Though she kept it to herself, it made Lynne very happy
to see it.
~~~~~
“So, Lynne, when were you planning to tell me? Do you have
any idea how it felt for me to walk in and find you like that?” Jim had been
reluctant to confront Lynne, but this was eating at him, “It was like walking
into a freakin’ crime scene, Lynne. To see you on the floor, bloody vomit all
over the place, not knowing what was wrong or even if you were ...” he suddenly
stopped, horrified at what he had been about to say.
“Even if I was, what, Jim? Dying? Is that what you almost
said? Look, I know it was indescribably horrible for you to find me like that.
I never meant for it to be a secret. I guess I was just in denial about how
sick I was. The first time it happened was about 8 months before I met you. The
second time was about a week after your first visit to Calgary. I’ve had 5
attacks since then, including the one in this house. But, the others were never
like that last one. I learned how to deal with them. I saw my doctor, had
testing done. We discussed the possibility of surgery. Passing the stones was
extremely painful, but I’d been told that it wasn’t life-threatening.. Also,
between attacks it was far too easy to believe that it was over, that there
just wouldn’t be any more. Does that make any sense, Jim?”
He looked away, trying to gather his thoughts. Finally, he
looked at her again and replied, “Yeah, okay. I guess it makes sense. But,
Lynne, you gotta keep me in the loop. You gotta tell me what’s going on with
you. No more secrets.”
“I agree, Jim. No more secrets. And, hopefully, no more
medical emergencies, either. I know you and Del were terrified, and I’m sorry
about that. The thing is, Jim, it all happened to me. I was scared, too. When
it started that night, I thought I could just wait it out like I always did. After
I started barfing blood, I got frightened. All the other attacks, I didn’t barf
at all. Then, I think I maybe fainted for a while, because I don’t remember how
I ended up on the floor. I don’t know, it’s all kinda fuzzy. Anyway, I was in
the bathroom, and I couldn’t get up, couldn’t get to a phone. I didn’t call for
Del, because I didn’t want her to see me like that. She would’ve panicked, and
I just couldn’t deal with that. I kept thinking it was going to pass; it always
passed. Except, it didn’t; it just got worse. Then, you were there, calling
911.”
Sitting beside Lynne on the couch, Jim leaned forward, his
hands on his face, elbows on his knees. It was a long time before he spoke
again, “Lynne, what you just told me, I gotta say it scared the crap outta me.
But, Baby, oh yeah, it scared you, too. I get that. Believe me, I get that. If
I walked into that and wondered if you were gonna make it, I can really believe
that you wondered, too. That’s why you told me to look after Del. You thought
you were a goner.”
“I never gave up hope, Jim, but yes, the thought did cross
my mind that I was about to beharpharp lessons. The important thing now is that
I had the surgery. Jim, it won’t ever happen again. So, are we okay?” She
rubbed his back.
He sat up straight and pulled her into his arms, “Baby, okay
doesn’t begin to say it. We’re so much better than okay. Hey, whe Del Del? Is
she gonna notice if we kinda disappear into the bedroom for a while?” They had
been abstaining during Lynne’s recovery, and both were eager to resume their
intimate activities. He caressed her thigh, and slid his hand down between her
knees.
“Good news, Sweetheart. Del isn’t home. Her new friends at
school invited her to a sleep-over. She’ll be gone all night. So, you know what
that means.” She started nuzzling his ear, it always turned him on.
“Oh, Baby, yeah. It means, let’s get it on.”
