It
was good to be back on the ‘Red’ again and Jari enjoyed having crewmates. She
missed her Kris and the girl things they used to do. But now, she had three
female friends to gossip and talk about things only women
feel comfortable talking to other women about. Yet best of all, Jari
finally got to have new clothing after a shopping day on the mall floor. On
that day, her first weekend on the ‘Red’, she really began her relationship
with the girls and Cat who was just as impressed with Jari’s
style as her Cat had been. Sure she had spent almost all that first week with
them touring the ship and learning the routine, but there’s nothing like
shopping to develop a bond between women.
Jari
was an observer. She learned a lot just by watching the others. It was good
seeing Krissie happy with Shayne who obviously cared
deeply for her. Her Kris had never been happy with any of the guys she had
dated which got Jari to thinking that maybe her Kris really hadn’t figured out
who she really was inside. Cat and JayV were quite the pair. They had an unusual relationship to say
the least but Jari’s Cat had never been interested in
anyone except himself when it all came down to brass tacks. Jari felt she was
learning new sides of old friends that she might never have known if things
hadn’t worked out like they had.
With
Arlene and HoloRimmer gone, Jari had lots of duties
to pick from. She didn’t mind they were jobs that would never have been her
responsibility before the accident. Heck, she’d done a lot worse than second
tech’s work after the accident. Besides, she had the skutter’s
help and they really liked her. Jari was a much welcome change from the two
holograms. And she also had Kryten who helped her with the things she wasn’t
sure about. With Rimmer back, Lister was obviously taken care of so Kryten
switched his concentrations and doting onto Jari. She was the one that had
taken in the Kryten of her universe and from the way she treated him, Kryten
knew she had considered her Kryten a dear friend.
Lister
was a completely different story. He tensed up around her and watched intently
when she had close contact with Rimmer. Occasionally, he did talk to her
especially just after JayV informed him that “Jari’s Lister was gay, too,” but it was for the most part
only for appearances; most likely after someone asking if he was upset with
Jari about something. Jari couldn’t help but wonder if Rimmer had told him
anything. Surely Rimmer had told Lister that nothing had gone on between
Jari and him. Yet she dared not ask Rimmer anything. It was understood between
them that Rimmer knew how Jari had felt about her Rimmer and Lister, but
nothing was to be said. It was just better that way. No opportunities for
someone to overhear any discussions. No risks of creating odd situations to
overcome. Jari didn’t actually believe that Rimmer would betray her trust
anyway. Lister was just acting like a guy in love: he finally got his lover
back but his lover had brought a woman back that he felt he had a connection
with. He was just a little jealous. He didn’t really have a need to be. Rimmer
was absolutely and completely in love with Lister. Even a blind person could
see it. Jari enjoyed seeing them together. She actually derived a great amount
of happiness from the guys’ relationship. Her Rimmer and Lister never got the
chance to really show their true selves.
After
these first few months in the new dimension, it really set in with Jari that
she was the only single person onboard if you didn’t count Kryten. With her
previous sole ambition to get noticed and the struggles and problems because of
that, she was surprisingly perfectly okay with it. She had friends. That’s all
she needed and wanted right now.
****
Lister
had just finished his daily work tasks. It didn’t take him as long these days
because Rimmer took on some of the chore of ship maintenance when he came back.
/Rimmer./
Lister smiled.
They
were in love as much as they ever were. They were meant to be together that was
a positive absolute certainty. The relationship was stronger and happier than
it had been before Rimmer had left to be Ace. But the new addition to the crew
had thrown Lister, and apparently his lover, completely off guard. He hadn’t
had the nerve to ask if anything happened during that year of Jari’s recovery. The truth be told, he wasn’t absolutely
sure he wanted to know. Lister couldn’t blame Rimmer when he really thought
about it. He certainly wasn’t blind. Jari was attractive. In fact, he found
himself unable to do much more than just stare not really knowing what to say.
More often than not, he even found himself a little aroused just by the sight
of her.
/Smeg, I need a drink./ he pushed
the thoughts out of his head and adjusted the growing warmth and stiffness in
his trousers.
Lister
pushed open the doors of the pub and got a surprise. Jari.
She was sitting at the bar toying at a glass in front of her.
“Oh,
I’m sorry, I didn’t…I’ll leave you alone,” Lister turned to go.
“No,
Dave, stay. I don’t mind,” Jari smiled. “Where’s loverboy?”
“Around,”
he stepped behind the counter to get a drink. /I really need a drink. A strong
drink./
He
sat down at a table a little ways away from Jari. They both sat there for a moment thinking about what they should do. Talk? Sit in
silence? Leave?
/What’s
she doing here alone? That’s got to be the reason. She must be in here cuz she wanted or needed to be alone./
Lister thought.
/He
came here to be alone, I’m sure of it. This was always his favorite bar. Maybe
I should just go./ Jari thought.
“Rough
day, too?” Lister asked suddenly somewhat surprising them both.
“Try rough life,” Jari
snickered still facing away from him.
“I’ll
drink to that,” and he took a huge drink emptying his glass then got up for
another.
Jari watched him in her peripheral
vision as he walked back out to sit at his table. He was trying to be nice she
was sure of it. Of course, most of the times the two of them had done any real
talking was when he was drunk.
“What’s Rimmer told you
about me?” /What in the hell did I just ask? Real intelligent Jari, just when
he starts talking to you…/
“Just
you were the survivor of your universe and you ‘bout died after jumping to a
dimension where you got attacked by some unknown race with super advanced
technology…you’re lucky he was out there,” Lister ended in a mumble with a
serious gist.
“I
know,” Jari replied almost equally as soft. “Dave?”
“Yeah?”
“Just
so you know, nothing happened between Rims and me.”
Jari turned on her stool to face him finally.
“Okay…”
Lister seemed puzzled.
“You
just act tense around me sometimes as if…I don’t know, as if you don’t like me
that much. I just want to make sure you don’t have that as your reason,” and
she stood up and headed for the door.
“Jari,”
Lister heaved a sigh when she was almost out the door. “It’s not like that, but
thanks.”
“Your
welcome,” Jari smiled and left.
****
Not
that long after Jari left, Rimmer came in.
“Hey
luv, what’s up?” he asked planting a kiss on Lister’s
forehead.
“Just had the weirdest conversation with Jari. She wanted to
know what you had told me about her. Felt like she had to tell me nothing
happened between you and her,” Lister sipped at his drink.
Rimmer
came back from the bar and sat down next to Lister uncertain of what to say.
Lister had never questioned him about his relationship with Jari. Rimmer had
noticed that Lister was not as close to her as the others had become. But he
had convinced himself it was just his imagination though.
“Listy? Have you wondered?” Rimmer swallowed hard not knowing
exactly what he would say if Lister did want to know. Of course, nothing
had happened but deep down Rimmer knew he had wanted something to happen and
thought Jari felt the same.
“Maybe,
but man, I know you probably had sex with at least some of those girls you
rescued. It’s just an Ace thing,” Lister smiled reassuringly.
Rimmer
smiled back. Yes. Lister knew other Ace’s and he knew what the job was about.
“Maybe
at first, but I didn’t enjoy it that much you know. You make it sound like it
was a perk or something,” Rimmer chuckled. “I only did it to test myself not
because I really wanted to.”
“To test yourself?” Lister leaned forward moving
closer to Rimmer. “What did you find out?”
“I’m not 100% gay,” Rimmer
leaned in and kissed Lister sweetly. ”It’s just you that I love because of you,
not because you’re a man.”
“I
could’ve told ya that,” Lister smiled. “People are people. You love someone
because of how they make you feel as a person. The man/woman part has nothing
to do with it.”
They
sat in silence for a while sipping at their drinks. Then they headed off to
bed. No love making tonight though. Just sleep…and dreams.
****
“Rimme’!”
Lister woke in a sweat. /What a dream!/
He looked over at Rimmer
lying undisturbed. Lister went to get a drink of water. Why had he had such an
odd dream? He was walking around on 11 checking some vents. That’s when he came
upon Jari. He almost tripped over her actually. She was huddled in a dark
corner. He tried to talk to her but she couldn’t see or hear him.
/It was like a future
echoes thing./ He thought to himself staring at the
mirror. /She looked really pale and terrified about something./
Jari took off running like
she heard something that scared her even more. Lister had tried to run after
her but she was too fast. It was like she knew the ship better than him. She
knew every turn, corner and door like she had been down that corridor a million
times. Not to mention she was swift of foot. He began searching every room and
corner. Nothing. He then had presence of mind to ask
the Hollies where she was. They said in stasis. When he got to the stasis unit,
sure enough Jari was there. Her eyes were closed. She was even paler than she
had been in the hallway. She looked almost translucent. She looked…
/…dead. Was that how I looked?/
He had put his hand to the
window and her eyes jolted open. She just began screaming and shrieking.
/What was it that she
called out?/ Lister thought hard trying to remember.
/”Help me Rimmer! David! Help me! Let me out!” that’s what it was. She was
screaming it so loud and hard I thought her voice box was going to explode./
When Lister had removed his
hand from the glass to open the stasis unit, she was standing there silently
sleeping again. He went to open the door but it was jammed or something. That
was when he woke up. He was beating at the door and calling for help.
Why had she called for him
and Rimmer? How was she even awake in stasis? How could she be in the corridor
and in the stasis unit? He thought back to how he had felt about his stasis
experience. He couldn’t remember it at all. He just went in and then he was
out. He didn’t remember feeling or thinking or even dreaming while he was in
there.
/Were
there complications with Jari’s suspended animation?
Did she know she was in there somehow? For three million years?/ Lister shuddered at the thought. /That would be a
nightmare./
He crawled back into bed
and clung to Rimmer.
****
Rimmer opened his eyes. He
felt Lister snuggled close to him. He wrapped his arms tightly around his
lover. The nightmare he just had had chilled him to the marrow of his bones.
Lister was calling to him, no yelling to him. He needed help. It was about
Jari. Something had happened to her. He was running as fast as his legs could
take him. Holly told him to go to the stasis corridor. When he got there,
Lister was crying and beating at one of the doors.
/Lister was yelling that
Jari was trapped in one of them. “She’s dyin’ Rimmy! Help me! I can’t get her out!” I went to the window
but she wasn’t in there./
He had grabbed Lister
forcefully and showed him Jari wasn’t there. Lister was confused. He swore she
was there just moments ago. Rimmer called for Holly to locate Jari. To the
guys’ disbelief, Holly hadn’t known who Jari was. No such person was aboard or
ever had been. Holly noted an unknown presence in a hallway on 11. The two men
took off for the lift. When they reached the floor, Lister ran like he knew
right where to look. Indeed he did. Jari was huddled in a corner where it was
so dark Rimmer would never have seen her unless he knew to look there. Lister
tried to grab her but she just screamed out to someone.
/What was the name,/ Rimmer closed his eyes trying to bring the picture back
as an aid to remembering. /”Karen! Let me out!” that is what she said. Her sister? Yes, that was her sister’s name. Karen was much
older than Jari./
Rimmer thought back to the
contents of Jari’s files. In one of Jari’s psychological evaluations, she said her sister would
always lock her in a closet when their mother left Jari in her care, which
apparently was rather often.
/How could she have made
herself take the stasis punishment? That little room is her worst nightmare./
After yelling at Karen
several times, Jari slipped effortlessly from Lister’s grip that she obviously
didn’t feel. Lister just sat down on the floor in disbelief.
/”She can’t hear, see, or
feel us, Rims. Why did she take the punishment for me Rimme’?
Why would she do that?” that’s what Lister said to me. When I told him I
couldn’t tell him and he wanted to know why, I had to tell him I had promised
never to tell. He hit me. “I knew you loved her! You love her more than you
love me! You’re continuing some relationship she had with her Rimmer! She
called for you from stasis!”/
Rimmer looked down at the
sleeping man curled up to him pulling him even closer, “I love you more than
anyone else in the multi-universe Listy. Do you hear
me? More than anyone!” he whispered.
****
Jari couldn’t sleep. She
was wandering the corridors. She searched all her old hang outs from her old
life on her ‘Red’. After a visit to the bar and several drinks, she went to her
old bunkroom on the officer’s floor. She lay in the bed studying the room and
its strange contents. She didn’t know this room anymore. It didn’t feel like
her room. It had pictures of people and places she didn’t know. The books and
clothes weren’t hers. Holly informed her of the time. She really needed to go
back to her room. She was happy to leave. The room where she was now was close
to and as close as she might ever be to the two people she longed for most in
the universe. As she made her way back, she found herself walking down the
stasis corridor. The empty windows stared at her and seemed to be watching her
stagger slowly by. Normally, she avoided this corridor at all costs. Why was
she here? She stopped in front of the room she had spent three million years
in. Just the thought of the room always terrified her but seeing it Jari just
panicked. She ran all the way back to her bunkroom. She curled up in the corner
of her bed wrapped tightly in a blanket.
****
The guys walked out of
their room after a rather quiet morning. They headed off to the dining hall to
grab a bite of breakfast before shift. They passed Jari’s
room. Rimmer and Lister stopped in their tracks. Jari was still curled up in
the corner of her bed. She was always up and going by now. Rimmer stepped into
the room.
“Jari, you feel okay,” he
sat down at the edge of the bed. He reached over and touched her forehead
gently.
She jerked. “Rimmer what in
the hell are you doing!”
“You were still asleep. We
thought you might be sick or something,” he stood up. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah,
sorry, just had one to many drinks after shift yesterday. Couldn’t get to sleep,” she mumbled. “I’m up now just
go on.”
The guys left her
reluctantly. When they sat down to eat, Lister broke the silence of the
couple’s morning.
“Rim, you’ve been quiet. Somethin’ botherin’ ya?”
“Just had
a strange nightmare last night.
And then seeing Jari curled up like that…” Rimmer paused knowing his statement
was leading him into dangerous territory. “It’s just she did that on the
‘Wildfire’, curling up in the corner of the bed like that. I guess I should
warn everyone she has phobias: confining places and being alone. It really
isn’t a wonder after what she’s been through.”
/So
that’s why you’re always giving her special attention. You do know more than
you’re telling./ Lister thought and decided to confess
his own dream.
“I had a weird dream too.
It sounds like it might have been something similar to your dream. Knowing Jari’s phobias explains some things that happened.”
After breakfast, they were
saying their “see you later’s.”
“Baby, I’m sorry for acting
like such a smeghead towards her all this time.” Lister
pulled back from their hug. “I admit I’ve been a little jealous. If you had
just told me a little more about her instead of keeping me in the dark, I
wouldn’t have been the jerk I’ve been to her…and you.”
“Listy,
you should ask her about the things you want to know. It’s not my place
to tell her story. I knew you’ve been acting like a goit
out of jealousy, but you should know by now that I love you more than anyone
else alive,” Rimmer kissed him deeply. “Now go to work before I suggest we blow
it off and make love all day.”
“Now that’s a really good
idea. I say let’s do that,” Lister began kissing Rimmer heartily.
“Ahem,” a voice
interrupted. “Not that I mind or anything but wouldn’t you two be more
comfortable back in your room.” Jari smiled and disappeared into the dining
hall.
Rimmer smiled at Lister. “I
can be through by lunch time. What about you?”
