Chapter 5
Over the next week, Roger became angrier at his marital
situation. Ashlyn disappeared two or
three nights every week. The only
consolation in that was that he could bring Skylar over on those nights without
worrying that she and Ashlyn would conflict.
Ashlyn went to Dr Bellows’ and General Jordan’s offices,
trying to get Roger’s schedule changed.
Both of them told her to learn to deal with it if she wanted to be
married to an astronaut. Privately, to
each other, they lamented that Roger had chosen poorly this time around. Dr Bellows called Roger in to talk, but Roger
refused to discuss Ashlyn or how he felt about the marriage. Dr Bellows tried Colonel Nelson, too, but
found he wasn’t talking about his best friend’s marriage, either. Roger retaliated on Ashlyn by getting her
access to Training Division revoked. He wished
he could get her fired from NASA altogether.
“That’s IT!” Roger exclaimed to himself. “THERE’S my answer!” He went immediately to Jeannie and Tony with
his problem.
“Roger, I can assist you by creating problems that may get
Miss Ashlyn fired, but I cannot help you get rid of Miss Ashlyn,” Jeannie told
him. “That is not within my powers as a
genie.”
“PLEASE, Jeannie – I wish that NASA would fire Ashlyn –
immediately!” Roger begged.
Tony looked at Jeannie and nodded, giving approval. As Jeannie’s master and husband, he gave
final authority whether Jeannie could respond to someone else’s wish, or not.
Jeannie folded her arms, did a series of head movements and followed it up by a
grand blink. The three of them smiled at
each other – this was the type of thing that had kept them friends for 15
years.
Ashlyn came home the next day with the news that she’d been
fired from NASA.
Roger hid a smile and said, “Oh? Why?!”
“Um – quite a few things happened today – but the last thing
was – well, embarrassing – for some reason I can’t explain, I went into Colonel
Mills’ office and ripped off my dress.
He fired me on the spot,” Ashlyn squirmed as she told Roger.
Roger made a beeline for the bathroom, holding back his
laughter. He couldn’t believe Jeannie
would put that in her magic genie spell, especially making Ashlyn do
that for Colonel Mills – who, everyone suspected, was a homosexual but no one
could prove it.
The day after that, Ashlyn came home with three pieces of
news – she’d gotten a new position already, working for Grumman Industries as a
research scientist; she couldn’t get a dependent’s pass from NASA; and she was
going out with a friend named Sandy
that evening. On all three counts, Roger
was relieved, but especially about the dependent’s
pass. He didn’t even have to tell NASA
not to give her one – doing that to Col. Mills sealed her fate.
In the fourth week of the marriage, Roger agreed to take
care of Skylar, plus his niece and nephew, one evening. (He still considered
them his niece and nephew though his marriage to Tracy, their real aunt, had
been severed.) His former in-laws wanted
to take Jeannie, Tony, and Tracy out for an evening, without the children. Janae was 8-1/2 and could be a sneaky little
genie, and T.J. at 6 was a little scamp.
Tony knew Roger understood both children.
Unfortunately, only Ashlyn was home when Tony brought the
three children over to the Healey apartment.
Skylar whispered to her cousins, “I’ll show you what my
daddy keeps here for me. You don’t
want to be around her if you don’t have to be.” Janae and T.J. nodded and followed Skylar
into her bedroom.
In the meantime, Tony eyed Ashlyn. He’d never met her, but it took him only
about two minutes of small talk to decide that Roger had indeed married a
beautiful and sexy bitch. He didn’t
trust her, but felt he didn’t have much choice.
Tony was a little worried, but he knew that Janae was a smart and
powerful djinni to keep all three of them safe until
Roger arrived. He assumed that would be
any time.
Tony left the three children with Ashlyn, who decided that
she wasn’t a nanny, and left 10 minutes later.
It was Janae that realized that, first. “Miss Ashlyn isn’t here, and neither is Uncle
Roger!” she told T.J. and Skylar. “We’re
ALONE!”
T.J.’s eyes got big. “Where IS Uncle Roger?!”
Skylar had an answer.
“I know how to call him at work,” she said. “My mommy lets me do that
sometimes.” She picked up the phone,
pressed a few buttons on the push-button phone, and waited. There was no answer.
“What do we do, Jae?” T.J. asked.
With Janae’s leadership, the three
made sure all the doors and windows were locked. They checked all the electrical appliances to
make sure they were turned off. “We have
to do safe activities, like homework,” she told them. She had homework to do, but as
kindergartners, T.J. and Skylar did not.
“You read to Skylar, T.J.” He
reluctantly agreed. Skylar could pick
out words, but T.J. could read fluently.
Roger still wasn’t there when Janae finished her
homework. Skylar turned on Roger’s TV
set and showed Janae how to use the cable box.
They dialed around until they found a station that was playing
cartoons.
At 6:00 there was still no Roger. The children had been alone for an hour and a
half, and were getting hungry.
“The safety movie told us we should never use the stove,
toaster, or knives if we stay home alone,” Janae told them.
Skylar pulled out a box of crackers, obviously comfortable
with the way her father kept the kitchen.
“These don’t need cooking.”
Janae found apple juice in the refrigerator and poured three
glasses. She couldn’t find plastic
glasses, so she just blinked some up when Skylar had her back turned.
“Jae,” T.J. whispered. “Blink us up some real dinner?”
“I can’t do that, T.J.
We can’t use magic in front of Skylar.
When Uncle Roger comes, he’ll feed us real dinner, I know he will,”
Janae told him.
Roger walked into the apartment at 7:00 and was stunned to
see the three children playing on the floor with the television blasting away.
“What are you three doing here?”
Janae answered, “Mama said you were supposed to watch us
today. They went to dinner with Grandma
and Grandpa Nelson.”
“Today?” Roger was aghast. “That was today? I thought it was tomorrow! Skylar, where’s Ashlyn?”
“She leaved,” Skylar responded. Janae and T.J. nodded.
If he didn’t already feel bad enough, Roger was now
livid. “She left three children under
the age of 10 ALONE in an apartment?! How long ago did she leave!?”
Skylar shrugged, T.J. looked at the clock and tried to
figure it out, and Janae answered, “She left at 4:30, Uncle Roger.”
T.J. chimed in, “Two and a half hours, Uncle Rog’.”
Janae explained how they had coped, and Roger was
amazed. He took all three children onto
the sofa with him, hugging each one, thankful that they were safe. “That was VERY wrong of Ashlyn to leave you
alone like that. But I am so proud
of all three of you – Janae, for knowing what to do, T.J. for helping,
and Skylar for not panicking.” He
explained that he was in a medical test that Janae’s
and T.J.’s dad had taken earlier that day, and his
was delayed slightly.
“We’re hungry, Daddy.
We ate crackers but that’s not dinner,” Skylar told him. Roger took some frozen hamburger patties out
of the freezer and started frying each a burger.
