Finding Themselves
Chapter Five
Nick knelt before him wearing nothing but small, bright red boxers. A tiny thrill of excitement and fear zapped through Chip as he watched the other Rangers get down on their knees as well. Such powerful beings kowtowing to him was something he never thought would happen. He was standing in a giant cave filled with a darkness that was almost physical, pressing down on him. Xander’s green boxers were slightly larger than Nick’s, and the girls wore matching bikinis. The shiny fabric clung to each of their curves, leaving Chip jealous of how close the pink and blue threads were to the respective smooth skins.
Each of their faces reflected only blissful acceptance, showing complete trust in the Yellow Ranger. Somehow, Chip knew they were there because he wanted them to be, and that any of them would do anything he asked of them. With their heads at his fingertips, he allowed himself to feel just a tiny bit of superiority. He was finally the best of them, not second string to anyone. But before he could tell them to get up, a horribly recognizable figure stepped from the oppressive darkness. The queen of the vampires sauntered toward the Rangers, but none of them tried to get up. A fierce protective streak filled him and Chip moved to get at her, but found he was chained to the floor by heavy iron shackles.
Both his wrists and his ankles were bolted down by a thick chain that rattled loudly when he lunged. Necrolai just chuckled, sounding like nails on a chalkboard as she swayed toward him. She was wearing her normal armor and Chip jumped at its cold touch on his bare chest. He hadn’t realized that he was only wearing yellow boxers, like the other boys. She hissed into his ear, her cold breath dropping over his shoulder. “Excellent job, slave. I would promise you power for bringing the Rangers to me, but I don’t think you’re going to live that long.”
Chip jerked away, knowing her words were true, and tried to suppress a shiver. He couldn’t remember the details of how they got down to the pit, but the heavy sense of dread in the bottom of his stomach confirmed that he, himself, had delivered the Rangers to the vampire queen. He pulled at the chains again, this time trying to use some magic, but it felt like he was trying to dig the power out from a thick, cold puddle of mud. He couldn’t get to it fast enough, and Necrolai brought her fist down hard across Chip’s cheek, causing his head to ring. He felt a small, hot drop of blood leak from the fresh cut, moving slowly down his face. He faced her, fire in his eyes.
“Don’t bother, Yellow Ranger, you’re useless down here.” Chip pulled against the chains again and Necrolai started laughing as she walked around the kneeling teenagers. “This worked out just as I hoped, I couldn’t have done a better job myself.” She finished her circle and stood before Chip, her eyes taking on a frightening glow. “I’ve been waiting to…”
The vampire cut her words short and leaned right up to Chip’s face, running her cold tongue along the cut to clean off the blood. Chip nearly wretched from the unwanted close contact, and tried once again to get away. He watched in horror as she closed her eyes in pleasure and savored the taste, surprised when he caught a glimpse of his blood on her tongue. It was a deep, healthy shade of red, but it was shining yellow with his power. The fear really set in now.
He knew she was going to kill him, there was no way around that. He always figured he would die for his friends, but never like this. He suddenly hated himself for having the audacity to feel superior those moments ago, for he was far from. Chip now knew he was the weakest of them all, not only to have brought them down to the pit as Necrolai wanted, but to be unable to stop her. She was going to kill all of them, and Chip was the reason. He self-loathing practically radiated in waves and Necrolai breathed in deeply. “Ahh, that’s right, I can smell your failure, which makes you that much sweeter.”
Chip wanted to get away, but it felt as if he was moving in slow motion. The demon beside him moved her head to his neck with lightening speed, power she had just taken from his cut, he realized, and bared her teeth. The instants were moving by like molasses, so Chip felt every agonizing second in full detail. There was a sharp pain as her fangs pierced the tender skin of his neck, then a shock of fear and lust that raced throughout his whole body. The lust was tainted and forced upon him by Necrolai, as what she was feeling was washing through him as well.
The first draw of blood made him weak in the knees, and he tried to cry out but no sound would come. He felt her icy claws cradle his head and grip his shoulder, almost like a lover’s embrace, but holding him like a vice. As the blood flowed out, he did not get any weaker, but felt the flavor of the magic in his body change. The power of the Garuda was hard and sharp, like the shape of a lightening bolt, but he had never paid attention to it until that changed. The magic became soft and fluid, rolling through him like waves, and was blue on the edges. He couldn’t move in Necrolai’s grasp, but Chip looked down at his friends.
Madison was swaying on her knees, becoming more pale with each passing second. She moaned softly as she fell, the aura of the Mermaid swimming from her now lifeless body into his own. Chip wanted to scream, to stop the feeding, to kill himself for being the vessel for the power transfer, but was completely immobilized. He yelled inside as he felt the Mystic Mermaid move through his veins into Necrolai’s drawing mouth.
Before Chip could think, the magic inside had changed again. This time it was as calm and old as the earth. Unshakable and eternal, the green Menotaur was drawn from Xander’s limp form and into the Yellow Ranger, taking any life his friend had left with it. The tallest teenager groaned as his body settled on the ground, the last sound he would ever make. Almost before the Mystic Menotaur had made the trip though his veins, the next magic filled him.
The pink magic was fast and passionate, darting around his body. Pale and lifeless, Vida also moaned as she laid down. The Mystic Sprite flared in anger as it was moving through him, and Chip cried inside, helpless to do anything else as his friends were taken from him, through him. He could hear his own breathing becoming labored, and his body felt like it weighed a ton. He knew the end was coming, and welcomed it.
As he knew it must, a hot red magic began to flow through Chip. It flared and ebbed, searing as it went, the most powerful of all of them. The Mystic Phoenix fought the pull but could not halt it’s inevitable movement into the vampire queen. As Nick became more pale, Chip tried to channel the Red Ranger’s magic, but did not know how to control the raging fires. Their leader uttered a quiet, angry, “No,” as he fell, and died with the denial on his lips. The Phoenix’s cry echoed in his head as the vampire swallowed it, leaving Chip with only seconds to live.
Despair and failure filled him, and Necrolai moaned at the heady taste. Chip took a final look at his fallen comrades, his heart broken into one piece for each of them. His only thought as his world darkened was death was the only fate he deserved. The last thing he heard was Necrolai pulling her fangs from his dying body, laughing at the new power surging through her. The chains clanked loudly as his lifeless form hit the cave floor, leaving no one to stop evil from reigning.
Chip bolted upright in bed, a long, terrified scream torn from his throat. His friends were dead! He whimpered and tried to calm his racing heart, looking around in confusion and fear. He was not in the pit at all, but at home, and the morning sun was shining brightly through his window. His mother pushed his bedroom door open a crack and said softly, “Another one, sweetheart?”
The red head nodded weakly and swung his legs over the side of the bed, grabbing a nearby t-shirt to mop up the sweat. Every night for two weeks, he had been filled with the same terror. His mother had come storming into the room the first time, thinking someone was in the house. She had offered to take him in for counseling, and even grilled him on drug use because it was happening so often. Chip would wander through the day exhausted, then fall into an uneasy sleep each night. Something had to change soon.
The Yellow Ranger at his Cocoa Puffs in silence, unsure of where to go from here. He was getting seriously sleep deprived and looked terrible even to himself in the mirror. The Mystic Garuda knew the nightmares were more than just his brain firing randomly during sleep, and a little seed of dread had planted itself in his heart. A confrontation was coming, and Chip wasn’t sure the Rangers would win. This nightmare had been particularly strong, and he felt stressed out. He needed to get rid of some tension.
Putting away his bowl and hugging his mom before she went to work, Chip trudged into the bathroom and turned the shower on extra hot. As soon as the steam began to rise, he stepped in, allowing the hot water to wash over his tight muscles. For several days in a row, he had tried to tire himself out by hitting the gym in the wee hours, but it had no effect except to tighten his physique. As a teenager, he let his thoughts drift easily to the desires of the body.
The Yellow Ranger felt an immediate stirring in his groin and enjoyed feeling himself get hard and sensitive to the water droplets. He took his time washing his hair, his face, his arms and legs, and every part except his hardened cock. The anticipation of pleasured relief was delicious. The dark thoughts of earlier moved away easily when he placed his fingers lightly against the sensitive head. His breath caught in his throat at just how responsive he was to his own touch. It had only been a few days, and he was reacting as if he’d been saintly for weeks.
He wrapped his fingers around himself, slowly moving in the constant lubrication of the running water. He ran his thumb over the head at the top of one of the strokes and jumped with the amount of pleasure. He moaned when he began to stroke more rhythmically, letting his head fall back and leaning against the cool tiles of the shower wall. He turned his hand around so his thumb was facing his body and played with his balls in his other fingers. The pleasure was quickly mounting, so he slowed his touch.
After waiting to calm down for a few seconds, he began to touch himself again, this time involuntarily thinking about how Nick’s mouth had felt on his skin. Chip’s stroke changed to match the pace Nick had used, and he groaned aloud as a wave of pleasure filled him. Chip knew it was wrong to have enjoyed being taken against the cave wall like that, but he could not deny that Nick had done something to him.
Another wave of hardness passed through his cock and he moved the hand from his balls to rim his entrance. The pleasure was rapidly building past the point before, and he was beginning to lose fine motor control. Although he had never tried it before, Chip was carried away by the moment and decided to slide a finger inside himself. The intensity of the ecstasy took away his balance and he fell against the tiled wall. The Yellow Ranger cried out as the pulses of pleasure started deep inside and moved along his hypersensitive cock. He shot hard three or four times, mindless to the name he called out as he orgasmed.
His brain registered the sound of his own voice and reeled as it processed what he had said. In the throes of passion, Chip had called out the one name on earth he hated the most, one whom he now understood had control over him without his knowing it. Chip had called out to Necrolai. He immediately fell to his hands and knees, all sexual thoughts gone as he fought the urge to scream in disgust. What the fuck was wrong with him?! He stared at the water swirling into the drain for five whole minutes before he could muster the courage to stand and finish cleaning himself off.
Chip emerged from his front door shaken and disturbed. As he turned the key in the deadbolt, he took a deep breath to steady himself. The spell the vampire queen had cast on him through Nick was finally taking effect. He would not be free of her influence until he took her down, and now knew what he had to do. The next phase of the spell had a firm hold of him, and he knew he had to follow through. A cheery “Hi!” jolted him from his reverie.
Nick was standing on the front stoop, smiling up at Chip. He tapped knuckles with the Yellow Ranger and asked, “Ready to go?”
Chip searched his memory quickly for some kind of engagement they were supposed to attend, but nothing came up. They even had the day off work. “Go where?” he asked, trying to keep the disgust from earlier out of his voice.
“Anywhere you want,” the Phoenix Ranger replied quickly. It was then that Chip realized that Nick was as much under his spell as he was under Necroali’s. It was time to take care of this, right now.
“I need your help with something, man. Can you get the other Rangers and meet me in that grove that’s just to the east of Rootcore?” Chip’s face became a mask of determination.
Before Nick could answer, Vida’s voice rang out, “Sure. But what’s in the clearing?”
The Red Ranger turned to the rest of the team coming up the walk and said, “He’s decided, it’s time to finish it.” Maddie, Xander, and Vida all nodded knowingly. Chip began to wonder just how far his influence went, since they already knew what was going on. As a group they headed through the magic tree into the other realm.
It was a scant half hour later that the Rangers stood in a circle in the clearing, their capes moving in the slight breeze. Their power had increased so much that they didn’t even have to Ranger up before starting. Chip turned to Xander and said, “I need you to do something for me, but it might hurt a little bit.”
The Menotaur Ranger didn’t hesitate to answer in his New Zealand accent, “Anything.”
Chip cringed inwardly at how easily he could take advantage of his team right now, but stepped into the middle of the circle anyway. Xander followed curiously while the other Rangers watched. “I need to let Necrolai know that were ready for her, but I can only think of one way to contact her. Can you send her my message?”
Xander stared for only a moment before he understood what Chip was saying. He got down on his knees and placed both hands on the ground, fingers spread wide. Chip stood behind him and placed his hands gently on the tall teen’s shoulders. “You ready?” the Garuda Ranger asked, not even sure if he had the power to do what he had to. When Xander nodded, they both took a deep breath and Chip instructed, “On the count of three…one, two, three.”
Chip began to glow yellow, and Xander green. A huge lightening bolt cracked from out from the middle of nowhere and struck Chip dead center of the back. The other Rangers yelped as they were knocked down from the impact and both Chip and Xander screamed as the immense power raced through them. Chip took less than a second to form the electricity into a wave, then sent it into the Green Ranger. The Green Ranger forced the yellow energy into the ground, dispersing it as far as he could.
As soon as the last of it was out of his hands, both Chip and Xander dropped, auras gone and out cold. The other Rangers watched with wide eyes as a rumbling began to echo. It was now clear what the two boys had done; they had sent a summoning message to the hidden pit where Necrolai lived underground. The rumbling was loud, but did not shake anything, and soon even the sound faded away as it moved deeper into the ground.
Miles down, Necrolai was jolted up from her seated position beside Imperious. “Do you hear that?” she asked just before small stones began to rain down from the cave ceiling. Imperious didn’t even have time to get up before a bright yellow wave of power roared through the cave, temporarily blinding every evil inhabitant. Koragg came running in from his side cave and watched the remainder of the energy dissipate. Imperious looked toward him and the purple warrior nodded.
On the surface, Xander and Chip groaned at the same time, coming to in no small amount of pain. They were all still deaf from the massive thunderclap but gathered around. Chip coughed a couple of times then stood, shaking the soot of the strike from his magical cloak. “I don’t think it will take very long for…”
His sentence was stopped by a purple spell seal that appeared directly in the middle of the Rangers’ circle. They all backed away and began to muster their powers. Whomever was coming up through that seal was going to be given no chance to act. Koragg appeared, with sword wisely drawn, but it made no difference. The instant the seal faded, the Rangers sprang into action.
Nick lighted an intense circle of flame around them that not even Udonna would be able to pass through, so the Rangers would not be disturbed. Xander sent vines whipping out to bind the wolf warrior, suspending him off the ground and holding fast around his wrists, ankles, waist and neck. Madison kept the vines coated with water so they would not be consumed by the raging fire, and darkened the sky with rain clouds to dim Koragg’s vision. Vida took Nick’s flames and whipped them into a towering frenzy, holding a high wind circling outside the ring of flame, so no one could hear what was going on inside either.
Koragg was so stunned by his violent welcome that he didn’t even say anything. The other Rangers were glowing to hold the manifestations of their powers, and it appeared that it wasn’t tiring them at all. He was shocked at how much their power had increased, and at how tightly the wooden vines were holding him. He couldn’t even move his drawn sword. Chip approached the trapped warrior confidently, knowing that Koragg could do nothing.
Even though Chip loathed the thought, he had prepared himself for this moment. He had to let a cruel streak out to get what they needed, but hoped Koragg would give in sooner rather than later. “Take us to Necrolai,” he demanded.
“I will never aid you,” came the predictable response.
Chip stepped close and placed a hand on Koragg’s breast plate. “Yes you will.” Lightening shot from his hand and spread out over the warrior’s body, causing him to arch in the restraints. Chip paused to let Koragg get his bearings and asked again, “Take us to Necrolai.”
“I said I would never aid you.” Chip sent a more powerful bolt into the purple warrior, this time pulling a grunt from him. When he could breathe again, he said defiantly, “You can do that all day, I will not help you.”
The Yellow Ranger looked at his compatriots and saw varying levels of emotion. Xander’s face was set in grim determination as he watched, Madison was actually feeling pity for the monster, Vida was enjoying every second of his torture, and Nick was watching Chip with shock. He never would have guessed the geeky Yellow Ranger had it in him to torment another being like this. After seeing each one of them, Chip felt ashamed he could sink as low as one of the pit dwellers, but knew he had to continue. Without Koragg’s cooperation, they would never be free of Necrolai’s influence.
Chip also knew what Koragg had said was true. Chip could not inflict enough pain to make the wolf warrior help them. Instead, he looked over at the Green Ranger, knowing Xander would pick up on what he was thinking. And the tall teen did; he tightened the vines around Koragg’s midsection until ribs cracked. In response, Koragg merely held his sword more tightly, waiting for the right opportunity to strike. Vida stepped forward, not letting her control of the windstorm flag, and reached for Chip’s shoulder.
“Let me try, I know a…” Her words were cut short when Chip spun to face her.
“No! I mean, no, my friend. I will not let you become like him,” Chip turned back to their enemy and finished quietly under his breath, “or me.” The Yellow Ranger closed his eyes for a moment, contemplating his next actions. Even though it had to be done, there was no way he was going to let any of his friends become the monster they needed right now. He took a quick breath, expelling the last hope to be as good as any of them and stepped behind the Menotaur Ranger. He put his hands on Xander’s shoulders as he had during the communication spell, and whispered something only Xander could hear.
The New Zealander shivered like someone had hit him in the back of the neck with a snowball, then dropped his head as if sleeping. Chip blinked, and they both looked up. A bright, yellow light emanated from their eyes, and it was clear Chip was controlling Xander. As Nick watched, he understood from a leadership standpoint why Chip had done that. He did not want to lay the burden of the required actions on Xander. But from the angle of a friend, Nick was horrified Chip had taken away Xander’s free will with barely any effort. Something had changed in the gentle Yellow Ranger.
Chip spoke, never taking his hands off Xander’s shoulders. “Take us to Necrolai, Koragg.” The purple warrior stayed silent, forcing Chip to manipulate Xander’s powers. The root-like vines around Koragg’s neck tightened slightly, sending a clear message.
Now a bit worried, the minion of the evil Master stiffened in the vines’ grasp and tried to look at his lead captor. “You have changed, Yellow wizard. You have cruelty. You…hungh.”
Chip cut him off by tightening the vines a bit more. “I don’t want to hear about me or anyone else. All I want is for you to take us to Necrolai. Do it.” The wolf wizard was quiet, and Chip cinched them down a little more.
Behind him, the other Rangers were battling with their own emotions. Never would they have thought to do such a thing as torture another being, no matter how evil, but it seemed to be working. Koragg was so off guard that he might actually do as he was told. Madison was trying to hold back tears, both for the enemy and for her friend. How had he come to this? Where was his innocence?
Vida was also dismayed, but at more than just the fact that Chip had suddenly become darker than them all. She was shocked to feel a heat between her legs spring into life at watching Koragg strangle. Each time Chip constricted the vines, she became more and more aroused. She couldn’t control her response, even though it was in a terrible situation. She wanted to watch more of the minion’s torture, then experiment later when she was alone. Vida had just uncovered a powerful part of herself she didn’t know how to handle, and was uncomfortably unsure.
Nick felt numb. He knew Chip had taken the right steps as a leader, and he hadn’t done anything to share the burden. The Yellow Ranger had been so quiet and strong lately while he screwed around, trying to ignore the blood curdling screams coming from Chip’s bedroom each morning. Yes, Nick had been there each morning. The Red Ranger had no idea why he was so drawn to his freckled friend, but he had been stalking him, almost against his will. He had watched Chip put on the heavy mantle of leadership, and become a different person because of the responsibility of keeping the Mystic Rangers safe. Every emotion from self-disappointment to envy filled the Phoenix Ranger, so he felt none of them.
Inside his own head, Xander was screaming for Chip to stop. The violation of having his free will removed was nothing compared to what the Green Ranger saw Chip doing. He didn’t even mind the fact that he was using his powers, it was what the red head was using them for. A darkness was filling the most innocent of them, a darkness born of necessity. Chip had taken the entire burden of hard tasks upon himself, instead of splitting them up among the team. Xander would gladly have taken the burden of forcing Koragg to comply, but selfless Chip had not allowed him to sully his soul.
Through Xander, the Garuda Ranger constricted the vines a little further, purposefully keeping Koragg conscious as he was brought closer to death. “Do it Koragg, and this is all over.” The wolf warrior simply shook his head, fighting the blood rushing in his ears and the stars behind his eyes. Chip tightened the vines again, hoping the wizard would give up before something dire happened.
His breath was rasping now, coming in short pants. Vida was so wet she was practically dripping, but didn’t let it show at all. Without any warning, Koragg’s grip on his eternally present sword failed, and it dropped from his grasp, sticking into the ground. “Al…alright,” he managed, before falling limp in the grasp of the vines. Chip immediately lifted his hands from Xander’s shoulders and the yellow light went out in both their eyes. Koragg crashed to the ground and the forest fell back to normal as all the Rangers abruptly let go of their powers. Only Nick was awed by the fact that, even though they had each used complicated spells, they had not Rangered up yet.
Koragg groaned and rolled over onto his stomach, weakly reaching for his sword. Chip stood over him and plucked the weapon from the ground, holding the point at Koragg’s abused throat. “Now,” was all the pale teen said before turning to face the rest of the team. Koragg stood up behind him.
Without speaking, they each withdrew their cell phone morphers and moved in unison, casting the words, “Magical Source, Mystic Force!” As it had scores of times before, each of the spell seals blessed by a Mystic creature descended upon the chosen teenagers. Their clothing was changed into armor, their heads protected by helmets, and their bodies imbued with more intense magic than any normal person could imagine.
Emboldened by their patron creature, they each called out their name, “Mystic Menotaur! Mystic Sprite! Mystic Phoenix! Mystic Mermaid! Mystic Garuda!” and came to rest, surrounding Koragg in the clearing. Each of their colored armor shined brightly, a testament to their bodily health and strength of will.
The wolf warrior wanted to kill them all for how they had humiliated him, but felt a tiny sense of respect for how thoroughly he had been beaten. Had he no honor, he would fight them, knowing it would be a mercifully short battle to the finish with them in Ranger state. But he had said he would take them, and he never, ever broke his word. Bowing his head in defeat, he spoke the magic words that would take them to the hidden pit. A purple spell seal bloomed under their feet, holding them all in its circle, and they sank through the ground.
Once on the cave floor, the seal released its riders and vanished. Koragg collapsed, exhausted not only from coming so near death, but also from transporting so many to the pit. Imperious was on his feet in an instant, demanding to know what was going on in his dominion. Necrolai merely stood and stepped forward, waiting to see what happened.
The Chip faced Necrolai first, fist clenching over the ax-shaped Magic Staff hanging at his hip. The others lined up behind him and as one, the Mystic Force Power Rangers knelt before the vampire queen.
