Lucky stepped off the hospital elevator onto the fourth floor and looked around for which direction led to room 402.
Glancing at the nurse’s station he saw Emily, engrossed in a chart.
“Hey,” he said as he walked up to the desk.
“Hi, Lucky. Are you here to see Elizabeth?” Emily asked her oldest friend, a worried frown creasing her brow.
“I’m here to be sure my baby is okay,” he said, a defiant tone in his voice that did not cover the fear she could clearly see in his eyes.
“Elizabeth hadn’t regained consciousness the last time I checked on her. Patrick is monitoring her and thinks that they may need to do a C-section if she doesn’t wake up soon. It’s impossible to gauge her neurological condition manually when she is unconscious and we can’t do an MRI or CT scan for fear of harming the baby. We may have some serious decisions to make in the next couple of hours.”
*************
Ric Lansing walked up behind Lucky just as Emily finished describing Elizabeth’s condition. The D.A.’s heart clenched as he thought of his ex-wife lying helplessly in her hospital bed, unaware that her child could be in grave danger. If there was one thing Ric knew about Elizabeth, it was the fact that she would sacrifice everything up to and including her own life to save either of her children.
Ric didn’t interrupt Lucky and Emily’s conversation, instead moving to the corridor and following the signs that led him to Elizabeth’s room.
As Ric rounded the corner he stopped just short of opening the hospital room door, noticing Morgan sitting at her bedside. Her hand was clasped in his own, his cheek resting on it. The enforcer looked as though he hadn’t slept in days and if that were true, then Ric was all the happier for it. A man like Morgan didn’t deserve a moment’s peace, let alone a decent night’s sleep.
What is he doing here? Ric thought to himself.
He watched with morbid fascination as Jason raised his head and looked into Elizabeth’s face. With Morgan’s back to the door, Ric couldn’t be certain but he got the impression that Jason was talking softly to the unconscious woman. It raised the attorney’s hackles to remember just how deeply the pair in that scene cared for one another. Elizabeth had the kind of devotion to the criminal that Ric had always hoped she would one day hold for him. That day had not come during their marriage, but Ric Lansing did not give up on anything once he set his mind to it.
He had been slowed down by Morgan in the past, but the mob enforcer had never been able to defeat him completely. If he had, Ric would be dead.
Now Ric had an idea that would eliminate Morgan from all their lives forever. If all went according to plan, Jason would be dead within the week.
A chilling smile curled the corners of Lansing’s mouth. That smile never reached his eyes.

Lucky came down the corridor just in time to see Ric turn from Elizabeth’s door and walk away in the opposite direction. Approaching the door slowly, Lucky looked in to see Jason sitting in vigil at Elizabeth’s bedside. No wonder Ric left without going in. Lucky was overcome with a sense of jealous possessiveness that he knew was not appropriate, given the fact that he and Elizabeth were not together anymore but he could not help feeling that he should be the one in there with her. After all, she was carrying his child.
As Lucky looked on, Jason tenderly released Elizabeth’s hand and placed his palm on her swollen belly. That was all Lucky could stand. He pushed the door open and stepped into the room, relishing the fact that Morgan pulled his hand away quickly, as though he’d been caught doing something wrong.
“Has there been any change?” Lucky asked. He hated having to ask a criminal about his wife’s condition. It tore his ego apart.
“She hasn’t woken up or anything. No doctors have been in since I got here, but she’s breathing regularly and all the monitors seem to be okay,” Jason said, shrugging slightly.
Lucky noticed how worn out Jason looked and almost felt sorry for the man who was once one of his closest friends. Almost.
“Emily says they may have to operate to deliver the baby if she doesn’t wake up soon. She says Dr. Lee thinks the baby is developed enough to do okay at this point,” Lucky reported, wondering why he felt inclined to tell Jason anything. It was none of the man’s business, but in all fairness this was not the first time that Morgan had saved Elizabeth’s life.
Something told Lucky it wouldn’t be the last either.

Ric sat in his office waiting for the phone to ring. He had made the last of the arrangements that would seal the fate of Jason Morgan for good. If there was anything that Sonny and Jason couldn’t resist, it was running to the rescue of Carly. For once in her life the woman was going to be useful, even if it killed her.
*************
Carly stood in the elevator of the Metro Court waiting for the car to reach the parking garage. Henry had the limo waiting for her down there, ready to take her home to her boys.
The car came to a stop at the garage level and the doors slid open, revealing the long black car she was expecting.
Not one for formality, Carly never made Henry open her door for her, so she opened the rear door and climbed into the car. She didn’t notice that she was not alone until it was too late. The automatic locks clicked and the car sped away before Carly could even reach for the door handle.
**************
“What the hell is going on here?” Carly said to the strange man sitting across from her. “Do you have any idea who I am?” she demanded haughtily.
The stone faced thug sat there silently, his dark glasses hiding any hint of emotion or recognition.
“Where are you taking me?”
Again her question was met with silence.
Suddenly not so sure of herself, Carly’s eyes fill with tears. She was acutely aware that the last conversation she had with Michael was an argument over his unfinished homework. She hoped that it would not turn out to be their final words to each other.
“Please don’t hurt me. I have two little boys at home who need me,” she pleaded.
She felt the car slow and realized that they were pulling into a driveway. They had not been driving long enough to have gotten out of town, so they had to still be in Port Charles. She would just take a cautious look around when they got her out of the car and that should help her decide how she was going to escape.
Suddenly Mr. Steely Silence reached out and took her firmly by the upper arm. A hood was forced on over Carly’s head and she could not see a thing. She heard the car door open and felt hands take hold of her to help her get out of the limo. She tried to listen for any sounds that might give her a clue to where they had taken her, but nothing sounded any different here than in any other part of town.
She was led up what she assumed to be a driveway or sidewalk, up two steps and through a doorway. Once inside the building, she was taken down a hallway and put in a room. Once she heard the door close, she removed the hood and looked around. She was in a nondescript room with one door, nothing on the walls and a single chair beside a folding table. There were no windows so that idea was moot.
Dammit! There has got to be a way out of here, she thought to herself.
No sooner did that thought enter her mind than the door opened.
Carly’s jaw dropped.
“You!” she screamed in outrage.
