Dr. Huang sat across from Chris, in a more friendlier-looking conference room, in SVU Precinct. His casual demeanour and clothing was mainly a focus of relaxation among his sessions. It had been the doctor's idea to question Chris in a more comfortable setting, rather than in an ice-cold interrogation room. With his hands folded and resting on the table, between them, Dr. George Huang assessed Chris's posture and emotional state before leaning forward and speaking calmly to his patient. "How have you been feeling, since your release?"
Christopher Jakosa, his arms resting on the table, didn't make eye contact with the appointed psychiatrist. He shrugged and stared at the white bandages on either wrist. The pain medication and anti-anxiety medication the doctors had given him left him feeling numb and listless. He didn't even remember being discharged and escorted to SVU. "Why am I here?" His head ached with lethargy and fog. He wanted it to go away but it clung to his brain like a sticky molasses. His limbs felt muddy and heavy.
The doctor sat back and calmly breathed out before answering, "you are just here for a talk. That's all. Is there something wrong?"
Chris shook his head, afraid that if he said anything against it, he would end up in a far worse place than a psychiatrist's office.
"Do you mind if we talk about your time with the Judge?" Dr. Huang noticed immediately that his question, no matter how innocent it was phrased, caused an unsettled reaction in his patient.
Biting his lower lip, his breathing uneven, Chris slid back in his chair and shook his head.
"Mister Jakosa, no one will harm you here. You and I are just talking; no pressures, no scrutiny. We are simply trying to get to the facts of the case. Why don't we start with how your relationship with the Judge started?" Huang sat forward again and took deep note of the tension and conflict in Chris's eyes, brows furrowed and mouth moving, not sure of what to say or how to say an answer. "Did you have any animosity towards her decision, after your arrest?"
Chris shook his head. "I already told the detectives, I didn't see her again until a year after my time was served. I was just a kid, at that." His head had started to clear and he was beginning to feel more lucid than when he sat down. His head cleared a little at a time and he was finally able to look up and see the man who was talking to him. He blinked. His breaths were shallow and moderate but that didn't calm him down. "Look, we didn't start actually seeing each other until I turned 20. That's when it really turned physical."
The doctor tilted his head at the young man's confession. "How physical?"
"Sex every other night. Sometimes, we'd go at it until I was completely drained. Then, she'd want more." Chris blushed in embarrassment at the admission as a wave of shame washed over him.
Dr. Huang nodded. "That was when she first started with the idea of the pets?"
Chris nodded and looked away, the redness in his cheeks brightening. "I thought she was just wanting something to spice it up. She was relentless, in bed. It wasn't until she wouldn't let anyone leave or get dressed that she really went off the deep end."
"How did she change? Was it all at once or over a period of time?" Dr. Huang braced his arms on the table but casually observed Chris, as not to frighten the younger man.
Chris took a deep breath and sat back, in the chair, before letting it out slowly. "Three weeks after she and I started going at it, she brought home a 'business friend' and told me she wanted to watch him screw me. I told her I wasn't really into that, but she insisted that it would make our play more exciting if I let it happen. So, I said yes."
"Did he wear a condom?"
Chris looked away, again. "At first. But, then he wanted to take it off and try other things, harder things and I said no. Tanya, again, talked me into it. Said that if I didn't do it, she'd punish me." He could feel the weight of Huang's eyes on him, wondering what the judgement was as bits of dirtiness surfaced. His right arm flinched and crushed itself against his side.
Dr. Huang studied him. "What kind of punishment?"
Shrugging nervously and looking away, Chris took a ragged breath before answering. "Like, spanking. Hard. Or, forcing me onto the floor like a dog and--" He felt sick and couldn't continue.
Huang noted several movements in the young man that the arresting officers hadn't placed as abnormal behaviour. "Chris, you have nothing to be ashamed of. You were a young, trusting man who wanted to please his lover. You said 'no' and she forced her will onto you. You were the victim of rape. You are not the only one it's happened to." Trying his best to ease Chris's mind, he could tell that Chris was only becoming more and more nervous about the forthcoming knowledge.
Standing up and crossing the plush room, Chris stopped and looked out the second story window. "I was old enough to know better. My mother tried to tell me about the dangers of a sexual relationship and I didn't listen to her."
"What do you mean? Your mother wanted something else for you to do with your life?" Dr. Huang's brow furrowed as he stared at Chris's slender back.
Folding his arms and glancing down at his gray sweatshirt, Chris nodded again. As he looked back up, he focused on a far building with the lights of the top floor turned on. "She wanted me to become a Priest. Tanya was my first--" his voice trailed off as the thought of finishing his statement made him sick to his stomach.
Huang stood up and made his way, slowly, over to the window to stand beside Chris, slipping his hands into his gray pants pockets. "You were a virgin, prior to your encounter with the judge." When Chris nodded his answer, Dr. Huang thought back to what Fin had told him, prior to going in. "Your wife told Det. Tutola that you 'owed your mother' for something. What was it?"
Feeling his heartbeat quicken and a chill run down his spine, Christopher Jakosa shivered. "When my dad died, I was angry. She tried to help by pushing me to be more active in our church, like after school programs for the CYO. I was too old for the altar boy so, she enrolled me into helping out in the church kitchen, and stuff like that." The lump in his throat was hard to swallow but he managed to choke it down as he continued, reluctantly. "My mom just wanted to help get me over my dad's death and get me to talk to someone about my anger issues. When I got busted, she left me in jail to teach me a lesson of how not to act."
"Don't you think that might have been a little extreme, in your case?"
Chris raised his right hand and placed his palm flat on his chest, over his heart, feeling the beat and controlling his breathing to calm himself down before answering. "Before we moved to Manhattan, we lived in Brooklyn. Mom worked in a rundown clinic, on the bad side of town. I had to walk to and from school with cops arresting drug dealers, prostitutes and pimps, on a daily basis. Mom used to tell me, 'as long as I stayed on the path, I was in God's graces."
Huang sighed quietly, thinking about what Chris had said. "The night you spent in jail and then your arraignment, how did you feel, knowing that was how your mother felt?"
"Alone. Afraid of how she would look at me, or how I could look at myself, after disappointing her. When my dad died, he told me I had to look out for her, and that it all rested on me to be 'the man of the house.' Just the typical stuff, I know. My dad meant everything to me, and I just wanted to make him proud that I could take care of her, like he did. After my time was up, I found a job, earned a little money and gained some respect back. The day that Tanya came into the store, she asked me how I was doing and said that if I wanted to talk about anything, I could call her. The next thing I know, we're having dinner at expensive places, going places, and just having fun." Chris stared down, at the street below, and followed a car as it travelled down the street and turned left, out of view, in the intersection.
Studying Chris's expression, Dr. Huang gave a small smile at the younger man's recollection of a slightly happier time. "Did your mother approve of you spending time with the Judge?"
Chris's expression went sullen as he shook his head. "When Tanya picked me up for my birthday, mom started screaming at me of how I shouldn't be hanging around her and it was inappropriate for me to carry on like a child, before I went to the monastary."
"And then, what happened?"
Shrugging and wetting his lips with the tip of his tongue, Chris recalled what came next, "Tanya asked me what I wanted to do. I said, I didn't want to be a Priest. So, she told me she had a surprise for me, we drove to a hotel, had dinner in the restaurant and then went upstairs."
Huang nodded decided to probe a little deeper, carefully, with his questions. "When you two first made love, who made the first move? Was it you or the judge?"
"Tanya." Chris swallowed and readied himself for the more in depth questions.
"Was it pleasurable?" Huang's eyes never moved from Chris's expression but he reminded himself to be unbiased and not to lead the young man into anything that might upset him.
Chris nodded, again, "yes. She taught me alot. We made love for hours."
"Chris, when did the sex turn into slavery?"
Silence for a long moment while Chris gathered enough strength to admit, not only to himself but, to another person what should have been a private memory. "Just after my 21st birthday. She started acting like she was my mother. Even wanted me to call her, 'mommy.' If I raised my voice to her, she'd have me bend over the back of the couch and count spankings. For awhile it was fun but, when she'd have guests over...." Swallowing the humiliation, Chris couldn't bring himself to glance over at the doctor's face, afraid of what level of disgust he'd find.
Huang averted his eyes, giving Chris a moment to gather himself. When he looked back, he tried innocently to continue the discussion, "take your time. How did she act towards you, with her guests? Did you know them? Were they friends of yours or hers?" He could tell the questions, even though they seemed pretty tame, were taking a larger toll on Chris than he had expected.
"The first few people she brought home were her 'business friends'. Not people from work but,--" Taking a ragged breath, Chris paused to stop himself from being ill with the memory.
Huang finished, "potential owners?"
Feeling the bile rise in his throat, Chris placed a hand over his mouth. He could feel the tears welling up in his eyes and the nagging feeling of wanting to run but not being allowed to do so.
"Why don't we take a break, get some water, calm down before we continue....?" Dr. Huang slipped his hands out of his pockets and turned to step back over to the table, where two glasses and a pitcher of water had been placed for them. He could tell Chris wanted to be anywhere else but stuck in a room with the doctor.
Chris wiped a tear from his cheek and shook his head. "I'm fine. She can't hurt me, anymore." It took a few more minutes for him to gain full composure before turning to face the doctor, now standing at the table and offering a glass of water.

"There's definitely some animosity towards the judge that he isn't letting on to. It's all just speculation but all the evidence points to Chris." Olivia had been focused on the young man in the plush room. She had waited for the door to be completely shut, on Huang's exit, before she said anything.
Huang turned to look back at Chris, who paced nervously. "In cases like these, there is expected agitation and animosity towards the captor. In Chris's case, he sees this opportunity to finally be free of the judge and her sexual addiction yet, he also sees this as the biggest threat to his freedom and is willing to do anything to stay apart from this life. He was dehumanised and raped repeatedly and forced to be okay with that. There's bound to be some animosity to it but I don't think he could have been driven to murder, in his state. He loved her and respected her."
Olivia shook her head. "She raped and solicited him and countless others. That's clearly not an act of love."
"No, it's not. But, in his mind, being as he was the first one she chose to start this game with, he felt that he would rather have made his lover happy than disappoint her and face her anger. Now that he's free of her and that lifestyle, he has carried on, with another victim of the judge's, on the outside but on the inside, he's at a loss for how to maintain his freedom. As he pointed out, the judge entertained several very high-ranking officials, from all over. That would certainly deter anyone from seeking help from law enforcement." Huang watched as Chris stopped pacing and stood, again, at the window and looked out at the night's city.
Making his way over to where Olivia and Dr. Huang stood, at the glass, Fin to a sullen breath. "That was the hospital. Two more of the judge's 'pets' just tried to commit suicide. They were caught in time but, a third came in DOA."
"Who was the third?" Olivia turned to look at Fin and glanced down at the small notepad he held in his hands.
"Karen Jakosa." He paused a moment to glance at Chris, through the glass. "His mom was called to pick up the son and take care of him."
Olivia's brow furrowed as she turned to look back at Chris. "What happened?"
"Self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Neighbours called it in. The other two were still in hospital custody so, one tried to overdose on morphine while the other slashed her wrists with a piece of mirror she broke, from the bathroom." Fin took a breath and stared at Chris, in the other room.
Doctor Huang stared at Chris closely. "Four people tried killing themselves, after learning of the judge's death, one succeeded. I'm thinking this is 'Survivour's Guilt' they are feeling."
"What do you mean?" Olivia asked.
"A pet that survives it's master doesn't understand how to deal with the loss. So, that pet feels left behind and subsequently, stops eating until eventually, they die and are reunited with their masters." Huang elaborated, not taking his eyes off of Chris. "The pets in the cages, Chris, Karen, possibly the few that did make it out of there alive and free, will probably try something similar with whatever they can get their hands on."
Olivia shook her head. "But, these aren't animals. They're people."
"Right. People forced to become and act as pets. Their right to wear clothing, taken away. Their right to decide for themselves, also taken away and placed in the hands of their 'owners,' instead of them. Their right for control over their lives placed solely into the hands of others. They are brainwashed to believe they are nothing without their masters, so why go on?" Huang finally turned back to Olivia and Fin as Chris stood up from sitting down in the chair, and started pacing the room, nervously.
Fin looked at the pad, in his hands. "Is he stable enough to hear the news about his wife?"
Huang sighed and bit his lip. He thought for a long moment and shook his head. "I don't think so. It might trigger another episode of distructive behaviour. I want to keep him for observation. Give him a chance to rest, first. His condition is too unstable, right now."
