Gessy stood at the toaster, looking at her reflection in the shiny metal. She twisted her hair back and forth, around and down. "What would I look like with an Earther haircut?" she pondered.
Now that she was safely at home she'd mostly forgotten the fear of being kidnapped by the Little People and was thinking more about the fun right up until then.
She smiled in memory. Her owner referred to the Earthers as Little People, so Gessy did too. Valerie had always rolled her eyes at the comment and pointed out that she was taller than Gessy.
So, visiting the OTHER Little People had some fun points. It'd been years since she'd spent any time around humans, other than nursing Valerie back to health and visiting the Spindrift.
Deckett liked her current hairstyle, she knew, but she was thinking of trying something like Betty's look. She was wondering how her giant would respond. He had chosen her current look and enjoyed tying the ribbons in place.
She could ask him, but the Earther Fitzhugh had taught her that being forgiven was more important than having permission. Or something like that... Whatever, it meant that she might be better to just do it than to ask-
Then the door opened. Deckett walked into the apartment to find Gessy at the edge of the counter attempting to look innocent.
"What did you do?" he asked, tossing his satchel onto the sofa.
"Nothing," she said, twisting one hair ribbon around and around. He decided not to press it. She fell back into his hand as he offered it and he swept her up to his face for their usual hug. "Didja have a nice day?" she asked.
"Yep. Hired a new camera operator. A good one. He can get right down in a tree root and find a nest of spiders without having to tear up the undergrowth." He turned to the fridge to start warming up one of Mrs. Aggrat's casseroles.
"But..." Gessy stared up at her owner. "I find you the little bugs and flowers, for you to sketch and paint. And take reference pics for. Me. It's what I do."
"Oh, that's right," he said as if just remembering the fact. "Well, this cameraman can find the insects, plants and so on without disturbing them. So I guess I won't need you to come along, too."
She stared up at him with her mouth open. He was just going to leave her behind. After years of training, of tramping around in brush, of wrestling grabber plants...and he found some new guy with a camera to take her place?! She wiggled and kicked in his grip and he automatically placed her down on the counter.
Gessy stamped a few steps away from him and crossed her arms, back towards the giant. He seemed oblivious to her tantrum.
"After dinner, we'll go meet this guy. You'll love him. Wait'll you see what he can do." She gave him the silent treatment during dinner but he just kept talking about either the cameraman or plans for their next trip out into the wild.
"Meany..." she muttered. She also sulked on the car drive to the building Deckett's office was in. When he reached for the after-hours log he placed her on the counter. She stood there, back to her giant, arms crossed, a perfect picture of scorned woman. The guards at reception knew her on sight and teased her a bit.
"What are you doing dragging this old guy out past his bedtime?" Tannded asked. "Don't you know he should be tucked in at sundown?" His partner Puddit laughed.
"It's not MY idea," she said frostily. It was such an un-Gessy tone that they both looked from her to Deckett in concern.
"Haven't the foggiest," he shrugged. "Maybe it's her time of the month?" All three men made the 'ward off evilness' gesture and returned to business. Deckett signed the log and swept Gessy off the counter. She sank down in his pocket and tried not to cry.
Were the Earthers right? Had she never been more than a pet to Deckett? They'd said he was exploiting her, demeaning her, a dozen other things she didn't quite recall.
But Valerie had defended their relationship, she did remember that. And Valerie had actually seen them together. Who to believe? Especially when the meany-faced Earthers were turning out to be right?
Thick fingers dipped into her pocket and she mechanically rolled into his grip. He set her down gently on his desk, beside her sofa. "I'll go find the cameraman," he said, already turned around and two steps away.
Gessy stuck her tongue out at the retreating giant. Then she flopped onto the sofa and tried to remember which finger Fitzhugh had said was the bad one.
"He's not in," Deckett announced as he swept back into view. "But while we wait, someone wanted a chance to talk to you, if you don't mind?"
"Why would I mind?" she muttered. He picked her up and walked to the elevator. Instead of putting her in his pocket, he just held her about chest-high.
She was familiar with the various freelancer offices on his floor. The one he got out on tonight was new to her. Shiny lab equipment was visible through thick glass windows. At first she sat up straight, trying to figure out what sort of experiments might be going on.
Then she felt a chill go down her spine. Valerie had told her about some of the experiments scientists had performed on the Earthers. Was Deckett turning her over to a scientist? How could he?
"Hey, Cellste!" he called, interrupting her growing panic. Inside one of the labs was a giant lady watering some plants. She turned and smiled at Deckett. Her smile grew once she recognized Gessy.
"Is that her?" Cellste asked.
"In the flesh," Deckett said. He set her down on the workbench. Planters extended to Gessy's left and right, branches and leaves draping down. She almost felt like she was in the forest.
"Do you know anything about plants, Gessy?" the woman asked. Despite her worries about the new cameraman, Gessy was quite confident about her wilderness skills. She began walking down the bench, pointing out each plant by name. She could also describe the animals that like to eat them, and the creatures that nested within or under them.
"Impressive," Cellste said. She smiled down at the little domestic. Gessy appreciated being appreciated, not ignored like SOME people, and smiled back up at the giant woman. The large woman was pulling some sort of tube out of her pocket. "So, Gessy, if I were to ask you to take this to a drop-bug plant...?"
The tube was about half as long as Gessy was, and about as big around as her thigh. A strap was connected to either end and she slung it over her shoulder. An arrow was painted on the side, pointing to one end. Gessy aimed that forward and strode quickly to the drop-bug.
She ducked under the fronds and worked her way deep into the plant, finally pushing the tube through the last strands and setting the pointed end of the tube against the core.
"Oh, excellent, Gessy," Cellste cooed.
"Told you," Deckett said. Gessy turned up at her owner's voice, but could see only green fronds. No matter where she looked, the thick canopy prevented her from seeing either giant.
So how did they know she'd done what was asked? In a burst of understanding, she withdrew the tube, tipped it on end, and put her face over the glass lens. Then she stuck her tongue out the way she'd copied from the Earthers.
Deckett laughed somewhere above her, while Cellste asked what that meant. Gessy skipped back to where she could see Deckett.
"You big goof!" she shouted. "A new cameraman, huh?" She was trying to act outraged but her relief was making her giddy. She started to shrug off the strap and Cellste reached for the camera.
Gessy lowered it gently to the waiting palm, then ran towards Deckett's hand. He lifted her to his cheek for a hug. Where she slugged him right on the cheekbone.
-----
"I guess I deserved that," Deckett repeated in the car. Gessy watched him rub his face for a second then went back to playing with the camera.
She ducked under the front seat bench and aimed at some of the trash rolling around the car floor. She'd forgotten most of the buttons Cellste had described so she hit them at random.
An aiming light speared a candy bar wrapper, the range finder pinged a seat spring and a highlighter outlined a wad of bubble gum. The camera flash startled Deckett as much as it caught her by surprise.
The giant hit the brakes just as the human girl's world turned into a fuzzy red after-image. She rolled to a stop at the front end of the floor mat.
"Gessy? Are you okay?"
"Tan Belden Bar?" Gessy called to the darkness. "Is that you?" She stood shakily and waved her hands out in front of her. Gentle fingers closed around her and lifted her into the air.
Once they were both familiar with the camera's capabilities, they went to the forest to practice using it.
Gessy stood on the folding camp table as Deckett adjusted the remote monitor.
"Is this Earthling technology?" she asked.
Even as absorbed as he was in the task he heard the discomfort in her voice. "Uh, yeah, probably," he said. "I mean, it's leaps and bounds ahead of anything we had last year. But it's just technology, you know? An idea. Once someone's thought of it, anyone can use it." He glanced up from the console to see her face. She didn't look any happier with his answer.
"What is it, Gessy?" he asked. The giant stopped his work and scooped up his domestic. He held her in front of his face but she wouldn't look him in the eye. "Gessy?"
"It's just... I wonder... Do you think that they hurt any Earthlings to get this technology?"
"Oh. Of course not," he assured her. "They wouldn't have to." He pet the top of her head gently with a finger. "It's not weapon technology. Just pictures." He gestured to the monitor and its current view of a rivet on the top of the table. "The Earthlings that were smart enough to know how to do this, they'd be smart enough to know it wasn't worth being hurt over."
"You think so?" she asked, finally looking up at him.
"I'm sure so," he said. "They probably offered the tech on their own, to get better food or maybe some ice cream." She smiled at that idea.
The finger on her hair ran down to her shoulders and back. She leaned forward to lay across his palm for the back rub. Nothing calmed Gessy down like a happy ending and a back rub.
When she was comforted enough to be limp, he lowered her to the table and resumed his adjustments. The rivet grew and shrank on the monitor, changed from shiny to flat and finally shifted to a heat outline of the metal.
"Deckett?"
"Yes, Gessy?" This time he looked at her as soon as she spoke.
"Do you think OUR Earthlings gave them the camera?"
He thought about that one for a second. "I doubt it, Gessy. They don't trust normal people any more than they absolutely have to. They wouldn't trade anything they...." His voice trailed off as he considered her real question. "You're just wondering if they're okay," he said.
"Yes," she replied softly.
He shrugged. "I can't really think of a safe way to find out," he said. "They don't trust me any farther than they can throw their spaceship, I don't trust them a whibbit, and you can't trust them not to kidnap you again."
"I could go see them?" she asked/suggested.
"With a camera on your back, showing them, their position, their camp, their-"
"Okay, okay," she said with a frown.
"Their sanitary facilities," he went on, "their spice rack, their laundry hamper, the place the dog buries bones. They'd go crazy at the thought that you were revealing their underwear and the holes they probably have by now. They would-"
"Okay, OKAY!" Gessy shouted, with a half smile.
"They'd have to hide their shoes, or pictures of the wear pattern would help SIB figure out if they were left handed or, I guess, right footed. You couldn't show-"
Gessy ran across the table and threw herself at her giant's wrist. He stopped talking and grabbed her around the waist. She giggled, but not as much as when he started to tickle her. He rolled her around on his palm for a minute or two, rubbing her ribcage until she threatened to pee on him.
She stood on the table where he set her down, hands on her knees and breathing deeply. He played with the controls of the monitor until she could speak again.
"We, hm, we've known where they are for months and haven't come to capture them," she pointed out. "Maybe they'll trust us now."
"Doubt it," he said. "If you show up, they'll think that we're finally setting our trap." She nodded at his words but still wondered if they were okay.
"We're pretty far from the general area of their camp," he went on, reaching towards her. She slung the camera and waited for his hand. "I think you'll be safe just wandering around this part of the forest for a while. A couple of hours now, a couple of hours after sunset, then come home."
She nodded at his statement. He habitually repeated the plans they'd spent days making. She couldn't get him to stop so she'd stopped trying.
Gessy stopped at the edge of the underbrush to wave, then stepped out of Deckett's sight. She was thinking about his comment. According to the stories Valerie had told her, there wasn't any part of the forest that the Little People might not turn up in.
She brushed her ear for luck and set off looking for a false-oak to photograph.
-----
After a couple of hours transmitting pics in daylight, Gessy swung back to Deckett for dinner. She nibbled on a noodle from his pasta pocket while he paged through the pics and films they'd taken.
"This is great stuff, Gessy," he said with a pat on her head. She giggled and leaned into his hand.
"Now we do the darkness stuff?"
"Yeah," he agreed. "Let's start easy. Walk someplace safe during sundown, then just sit and wait for darkness. Film the stuff around you without walking."
"I can walk and aim the camera at the same time," she protested.
"Practice one thing at a time," he insisted.
"Oh, please," she started to argue. He tapped the table next to her feet once with his finger. She looked scandalized for a second but dropped to her knees.
"Who owns you?" he asked.
"You do," she said. Her head hung down a bit. She stared at his wrist before her.
"Who tells you what to do?"
"You do," she said. The head drooped a bit more.
"Who's been doing this for longer?"
"You, by years and years," she replied.
He looked down at the human for a second or two. Instead of the last line, though, he changed the ritual. "Who loves you?"
"You never have-" she started, then caught herself and looked up in his eyes. "You Do!" she shouted. He picked her up for a hug. She squealed and gave back as good as she got.
"I'll do it your way," she promised.
Just about sunset he walked some distance from where she'd already practiced and set her down by a fern.
She wandered around for a bit, setting her orientation and looking for a hide she could use. The hole in the bole of the tree was just too perfect to let go.
Climbing with the camera strapped to her back was more difficult than she'd expected, but she was still able to master the tree. The bark was smooth but the whole tree canted at a slight angle.
With a little work and her climbing hooks she made it to the hole, verified that nothing lived inside, and settled in place.
After full darkness, the camera was the greatest of toys. She alternated between light amplification, infra-red, and the visible and invisible ranging lasers.
She tried Cellste's trick, too. To preserve her night vision, she closed one eye as she pressed the button to activate the flash. Then while one eye was effectively blinded, the other still worked.
"Wicked coolness," she muttered. Then she sat quietly and waited for the wildlife to recover from the flash.
A few hours later she heard some footsteps in the brush. She aimed the camera towards the noise and played with the settings. Finally, the light amplifying setting and the distance lens showed her a face. At first, she thought it was a monster.
Then she realized it was just a giant with something over his face. He was walking slowly through the forest, looking down at the ground. After a second or two, she saw another giant, with a similar device, walking behind the first.
Their views swept back and forth across the ground. Gessy lifted her head from the viewfinder to see what they were looking at. Near-total darkness was all she saw.
After another glance at the giants, she realized they must have been wearing some sort of night-seeing equipment of their own. They walked almost normally through the pitch black night without tripping over roots or hitting trees.
She idly wondered what they were looking for. A bigger concern was whether they would notice her, but she'd just tell them who she belonged to. Then she took a picture so Deckett would know who had found her, if they didn't obey the rules.
Another sound came to her then. From down at the bottom of the tree, voices drifted up. Human voices. Voices she knew!
"What the hell?" Betty was asking. "How do they keep finding us?"
"I don't know," Valerie said. "Duck down under the roots, maybe we can hide."
"If it's a tracking system," Betty hissed, "hiding won't help!"
"You have a better idea? C'mon!" There was a rustling, as of dead leaves, then silence.
Gessy turned back to the approaching giants.
