In front of a small office building, Vertag parks his car and steps to the curb. Jackala arrives in his own car. Several vehicles discharge uniformed policemen who gather on the sidewalk.
Jackala: Agent Vertag. What’s going on? What did you need backup for?
Vertag: Commissioner Jackala, we recently collected three Earthlings from this research facility. (Gestures to his holster) Miss Crane interviewed them, and they all state that there was at least one other Earthling being experimented upon here.
Jackala: So you need to find it, and find out why they didn’t turn it over.
Janet: Her.
Vertag: It’s a female. (Jackala shrugs) I don’t really care why. I need to go in and find out where she is, and I need your men to make sure no one sneaks her out.
Jackala: (loud) Okay, men! Surround the building. No one in, search anyone that comes out. Any humans are to be delivered to me.
Janet: To us.
Vertag: Well, if his men find her, his men get the credit. And Coastal City gets the reward. We still get the woman.
Janet: (not happily) Whatever. As long as we find her. (Vertag and Jackala enter the building)
(In a small office, a man in a lab coat cowers behind his desk.)
Supervisor: No. No, we have no other Earthlings in the building.
Janet: The ones you gave us two days ago all insist that you do.
Supervisor: But you can’t trust what an Earthling says-
Vertag: She does.
Jackala: And her superiors do. And they’re the ones in orbit with atomic weapons.
Supervisor: Well, you have to tell them. (implores Janet directly) Convince them. We have no other Earthlings that we can hand over to you. It isn’t possible anymore.
(The giant officers look at each other)
Jackala: That sounds like a qualification.
Vertag: Perhaps a useful one.
Supervisor: Oh, please…
Vertag: Supervisor, three humans have identified a human in your possession. Now, you can give us the human, or her body, or a really, really good story.
Jackala: Any one works for me.
Janet: Not her body!
Vertag: Oh! I should mention, the humans can investigate the body and tell if she died today or three days ago. And if she was murdered. So if she’s alive right now, and you kill her to prevent her talking about something, they’ll know and you’ll have to talk to the Directorate.
Jackala: They can?
Vertag: So they tell me. It sounds fascinating.
Jackala: It sounds useful.
Supervisor: Oh, oh, oh. No. I can’t. We can’t. It just isn’t possible.
Vertag: You need to convince all three of us, Supervisor.
Supervisor: Oh, very well. Come along. (leads them down the hall, through a security door, into what looks like a jail. There is one (very clean) cell, with a young woman lying on the cot. She looks up as they enter and stands.)
Shari: Supervisor? What’s going on? Who are these people?
Supervisor: These people are from… These people wanted to meet you, Shari.
Vertag: No, we wanted to meet the human.
Janet: Oh my god.
Jackala: (Looking closely at the captive) There’s something wrong with her. Her features…they’re kind of wooden. (turns to supervisor) Is she drugged? What is she doing in there, anyway?
Janet: It’s not possible.
Vertag: Janet? What’s wrong?
Supervisor: It’s not what you think.
Vertag: Since my mind is blank, I’d say that was a safe bet.
Jackala: No, really. I’ve been observing people for twenty years on the Force. There’s something wrong with her.
Supervisor: (confident tone for the first time) There’s nothing wrong with her. Quite the opposite! This, gentlemen, is Shari. The Earthling Shari.
Shari: Hello. I am pleased to meet you. (sticks her hand through the bars. The men stare at her)

-----
Janet: What have you done to her?
Jackala and Vertag: Oh, crap.
Supervisor: It’s not quite her. She’s inside a sort of robot. It’s connected to her brainwaves. She operates it the way that you operate your own body.
Janet: So…she’s okay? She’s still…
Supervisor: She’s still an Earthling. Inside there.
Janet: Well, get her out!
Supervisor: Oh, that’s quite impossible.
Vertag: What, exactly, have you done, Supervisor?
Supervisor: I have managed to permanently enhance a state-of-the-art robot with a naturally evolved brain. She’s in a life-support pod inside the chest, there.
Shari: (points to her sternum, giggles) I’m in here.
Supervisor: Her brain waves are absorbed by the lining of the pod, converted to electromechanicalized impulses that direct the movement of the outer frame.
Jackala: Vertag…
Vertag: Just a second.
Janet: Why can’t you remove her?
Supervisor: It would kill her. We meant for this to be permanent, so we sealed it. And the shock of coming out would certainly destroy her mind. If we severed the connection, it would be like unplugging your brain from the spine.
Jackala: (low but intense voice) Vertag, I do NOT want a Restriction Squad in my city.
Vertag: (matching tone) You think I do? I don’t want them on the continent!
Janet: Well, then, maybe our tech people can figure it out? Let them look the case over-
All three giants: NO!
Supervisor: They…they won’t understand what I’ve done. It’s taken me years to get to this stage.
Vertag: Supervisor, this is Blacklist research.
Supervisor: No, not really.
Vertag: This could allow an Earthling to infiltrate our society. This can’t be anything BUT Blacklist.
Supervisor: No, no, we can control it. Don’t you see? This gives us an insight into how their brains work. Direct access to it, in fact! There’s no danger.
Jackala: Then, do you want to meet with the Advocate? Explain how there’s no danger? (supervisor pales, shows fear) (to Vertag) I’ve heard enough.
Vertag: Yeah.
Jackala: I’ll brief my men. (he turns to leave)
Vertag: They can’t read anything, examine anything, or talk to anyone. (Jackala nods and departs)
Janet: What’s going on?
Shari: Supervisor…?
Supervisor: Don’t worry, dear. It will be alright.
Vertag: No, it won’t.
Janet: Vertag! What is Blacklist research?
Vertag: (looks around, finds a small table and chair outside the cage. He pushes the Supervisor into the chair, puts Janet on the table. Starts talking to Janet and to Shari, explaining the situation) Certain research efforts are considered incredibly dangerous by the government. Direct threats to the government, to society, to life in general.
Supervisor: But this isn’t…
Vertag: Shut up. This is. This is something that meets that. (some commotion is heard outside, voices raised and doors slamming)
Janet: So, we don’t tell them?
Vertag: (shakes his head) We can’t just not tell them. If the Restriction Committee hears the slightest rumor about this tech, they’ll come here to erase it.
Janet: Erase? Is that a euphemism?
Vertag: Ever hear me tell you about Canal City?
Janet: No.
Vertag: It doesn’t exist. A Restriction Squad erased something that they invented there.
Janet: And, what, sent the people packing?
Supervisor: No…
Vertag: No. They interrogated everyone involved in the research. And their families. And anyone they might have spoken to. And erased them.
Janet: Oh.
Vertag: I’m not done. They also destroyed the research facility. Then they looked into anyone that supplied equipment for the prototype. Even the guy that drove the truck that delivered basic copper wiring got rounded up. And erased.
Janet: Oh, no.
Supervisor: (moans. Outside, the noise starts to rise a little bit).
Vertag: People responsible, people marginally responsible, their families, their neighbors and the salesman down the road. Systematic destruction and death.
Janet: Okay. Okay, okay, okay. So, we get her to the shuttle, no one needs to know, right?
Shari: A shuttle? I think I’m too big for a shuttle.
Vertag: No, Janet. I really, really can’t let the humans get this technology. The Restriction Squad would destroy the Compound before letting that happen.
Janet: (Urgently) But no one’s TELLING them, right?
Vertag: We won’t. But we have to take some measures. If we destroy the research, and they hear about this sometime in the future, maybe they won’t be as insanely paranoid about trying to do a clean-up. But if they catch us, they may destroy Coastal City…
Janet: But-
Vertag: AND any humans that might even have heard of the tech.
Janet: You’re going to kill her.
Vertag: Well, I can’t let you have the tech. And she can’t be separated from the tech… So I have to.
Shari: Oh. Oh, please? No?
Janet: I thought you were different.
Vertag: Different from what?
Janet: I thought you saw us as people. You’re just killing a human because that’s convenient.
Vertag: That’s what you think I’m doing? Janet, I’m trying to SAVE lives here. People AND humans. It’s a necessary sacrifice.
Janet: It’s not like you’re killing someone you see as real. Just another Earthling, huh?
Supervisor: (Guns sound outside. Supervisor screams and runs towards the door) Noooooo!
Vertag: (shoots him dead) Yes. (Janet and Shari stare at the body.) Look, he was going to die no matter what happened. He’s the one that could recreate this. If we do this, maybe I can stop the killing short of his family.
Shari: He had two children.
Vertag: They would be dead by the end of the week if the Restrictors heard about you.
Janet: Can we have a minute?
Vertag: What for?
Janet: To say goodbye. It’s an Earthling custom if we know death is approaching.
Vertag: (stares at her for a moment) Okay. Okay, I’ll leave Shari to the last. But that is absolutely the best I can do. Okay?
Janet: No.
Vertag: Well, that’s tough. Do your parting. (he leaves. Shari holds out her hand. It doesn’t’ quite reach the table. Janet runs and jumps, Shari catches her.)
Shari: Goodbye. I wish I’d gotten to know-
Janet: Oh, shut up. I have a few questions for you.
(outside in the hall, Vertag watches as the police pile files, computer tapes and film into a hallway. Jackala speaks with another man, then turns to the agent.) We’re just about finished.
Vertag: Me, too.
Jackala: Is she going to be a problem?
Vertag: I won’t take her home until she isn’t.
Jackala: And how will you make her see reason?
Vertag: Once we’re past it, once it’s done, she’ll come around.
Jackala: I hope you’re right. (nods at a man’s signal) Okay. We have to get out of here, now.
Vertag: I’ll - (There’s a crashing sound. The giants run into the room with the cage. The back wall has a hole in it. The hole is about half as big as Shari’s robot-suit. By strange coincidence, Shari and Janet are nowhere to be seen)
Jackala: The robot’s super-strong? No one could have mentioned that?
Vertag: Finish here. I’ll take care of this.
Jackala: You’d better! If they make it back to the Earthlings…
Vertag: Oh, come on. She doesn’t even know what part of town she’s IN! Much less how to get home. (He wiggles through the hole, drops out of sight)
(Down in the alley, he swings off of a fire escape and looks around. Choosing a direction, he takes off running, gun in his hand)
----
The scene is a control room aboard the Excelsior. Men and women in Spacefleet uniforms monitor computer displays and speak softly into mikes. A woman officer stands behind two technicians, a hand on each shoulder. A senior officer steps up behind her)
Captain: Report, Commander.
Commander: Got the call about five minutes ago, sir. Verified her ident, linked her through to the 63rd. They’re deploying a technical unit. We’re guiding her to a rendezvous with them. (the captain nods).
(Cut to Vertag running through an intersection, disrupting traffic. He pauses on the far curb.)
Vertag: (Muttering) Where are you? Where the crap are you? (takes off running again)
(Back in the control room, one technician speaks softly as we look over his shoulder and see a graphic of the city, with red dots scattered, one green one in the center.)
Tech1: Now, turn right, and run to the end of that alley. (the green dot turns right and moves)
Commander: She hasn’t completely explained the situation, but she’s been very clear about what she needs.
Captain: Which is?
Commander: Meeting with some medical and electronic technicians, and avoiding her giant.
Captain: You mean, avoiding all giants.
Commander: No, sir. She’s running straight through a crowd of giants right now. They don’t seem to be reacting. The only giant she seems to be worried about right now is the SID agent.
Captain: Where is he? (She taps Tech2 on the shoulder, the woman points to another map of the city. A blue dot is in the center, running quickly down a street marked with red dots) Tactical? (Both techs alter their screens. We see that Vertag is a couple of blocks away from Janet’s position. The green dot is moving directly away from the blue dot) Good, good. Anything you need from me?
Commander: She was asking earlier about a missile strike, but she seems to have calmed down since then.
Captain: Hmm. Keep me informed. Especially if she starts explaining. But no strikes.
Commander: Yes, sir.
Tech2: Commander, he’s turned around.
Commander: Inform her.
(Shari runs through a warehouse, tall stacks of boxes on either side. No workers are visible. She clutches Janet in her cupped hands before her)
Janet: LEFT! (Shari spins around a pile of pallets and runs…to a dead end)
Shari: Aaah! No. NO!
Janet: It’s okay, Shari. Look down.
(The grate over the building drain moves. Marines issue forth. The first ones through spread out for a perimeter, the next ones help others up. Major Perez, Captain Brown and Major Roth both climb into view. Perez takes a few Marines and runs towards the end of the aisle.)
Brown: Something you need a hand with, Crane?
Janet: Oh, I am SO glad to meet you guys. Guys? This is Shari Olsen.
Roth: Yeah? That’s a hell of a trick.
(Vertag walks along a dark alley, scanning back and forth. He kneels to examine a footprint in the mud, then rises and walks more swiftly. At the end of the alley, a car stops on the cross street. Jackala is driving)
Jackala: Any good news?
Vertag: I’m getting closer. She’s fast, but not terribly bright. They’re headed for the docks. I’m not sure why.
Jackala: Look, I can’t be involved in this stuff outside of the lab. Too much attention. My squad’s solid, but if I’m seen out here…
Vertag: I understand. I’m in the same sling you’re in. I’ll find them. I’ll take care of her. (Jackala nods, drives off)
(In the warehouse, Shari is laying down on the ground. Her ear has opened up like a gull-wing door. Brown steps out and walks to Crane.)
Brown: Well, there’s good news and good news. The scientist was lying.
Janet: What?
Brown: Yeah, the whole thing’s modular. No seals. We can pull her out any time we want.
Janet: And her brain?
Brown: Doc says she’d be in no more trouble than yanking EEG leads out of her hair.
Janet: But why did he…?
Brown: Maybe he was trying to play for time? Keep the experiment going? Or, maybe giants are like people. (she looks questioningly at him) They’ll say just about anything to not get killed.
Janet: Well, it didn’t work. (he shrugs, obviously not bothered by a dead giant, or a whole lab of dead giants) But that’s only one problem. Vertag’s not going to let us take her out, even if it’s safe.
Brown: That’s his problem. (behind him, two grunts heft their heavy weapons high for a second) Unless he makes it ours.
Janet: Hey, how modular IS that thing? (Brown looks thoughtful)
----
(Vertag opens the door to the warehouse, enters gun-first. He glances around, scans the floor, and walks directly to one aisle. He pauses at the pallet stack, then sweeps around to point his pistol at the robot. She’s sitting calmly against the wall, holding Janet in her cupped hands. Janet’s calm as well.)
Janet: You are good. I’d have bet anything that it would have taken you another hour to find us.
Shari: We doubled-back a couple of times.
Vertag: Not well.
Janet: So. You reconsidered your position?
Vertag: (stepping closer slowly) No.
Janet: Haven’t you killed enough people today?
Vertag: Nope. Fifteen so far. Needs to be sixteen. Or, you know, about three or four thousand.
Janet: Seventeen. (Shari moves her hands so that Janet is place right before her sternum.) If you’re going to kill her, you have to kill me.
Vertag: I knew you were going to say that. (pulls back the hammer on his gun) Please don’t make me do this, Janet.
Janet: CAN you do this, Vertag?
Shari: No. NO! (She places Janet on the ground)
Janet: What? (she jumps up at Shari’s side) Pick me up! Pick me up!
Shari: (looking at Vertag) You killed those people because they broke your laws, right?
Vertag: Look, I didn’t want to-
Shari: I know. But if I die, it’s still because they broke the law.
Vertag: Yeah…
Janet: No! (Shari delicately slides Janet to arm’s length)
Shari: But if you kill Miss Crane, it’s because of me. I don’t want anyone to die because of me.
Vertag: That’s…a good point. And other humans would die, because of you, if we tried to get you off planet.
Shari: Then I want you to kill me. And destroy this shell. And save lives.
Janet: NO! (she starts to run around the hand. Shari picks her up and holds her out to the side.) Don’t do it! Please!
Vertag: Close your eyes. Think of a happy place. (She does. He shoots. The body relaxes a tiny bit, then freezes. Vertag holsters the gun, then kneels and pries Janet loose. She sobs, reaching out to the body as he slides her into the Earthling holster. Then he stands and looks around. He steps to the side. The camera pans down across Shari’s ‘body.’ Around the back, we see a set of wires running out from her shirt and down the drain)
(Down in the drain, Brown helps a tiny little Shari out of a large, bullet shaped device. Roth helps her stand, then carries her over to a waiting Hummer. Three other Hummers are in line in front of it in the drain, revved and ready to go. Perez signals to the last Marines to mount up. They drive off, dragging the device behind them.)
(Vertag piles some pieces of wood from a smashed pallet on the body, pours a can of gasoline over that. He sets the fire and walks out)
----
(Lessala pokes her head into Vertag’s office. He’s sitting at his desk, just staring at the wall. Janet is on the corner of his desk, staring in the opposite direction)
Lessala: Guys? No one else is in the waiting room. It’s closing time. I’m, uh, leaving now. Unless you need anything?
Vertag: Mmm.
Janet: No, Lessala. Thank you. (Lessala looks worried but leaves) (A long moment of silence)
Vertag: You want to get some dinner?
Janet: No. I’m, I’m eating with the Colonel tonight.
Vertag: Ah. (Janet walks to the end of the desk. It’s been moved to be against the wall. An elevator door has been installed in the wall. A small area of the desk around the elevator wall is fenced off. A Marine in dress uniform stands at a podium with SOG (Sergeant of the Guard) marked on it.)
Janet: You can secure, Sergeant.
Marine: Yes, ma’am. (The two humans enter the elevator. It closes. Vertag sits and stares)
(The elevator’s other doors open to the outside. A number of Marines are constructing a covered walkway to the next building. Major Perez returns the SOG’s salute as he passes. Janet stays in the elevator for a second.)
Perez: Miss Crane? Are you coming out?
Janet: Oh. Sorry. (she walks along the walkway. Perez follows)
Perez: Brown won’t stop giggling about the mind control device. And Roth says that Miss Olsen is going to be fine.
Janet: That’s nice.
Perez: Are you going to be okay?
Janet: I suppose. Eventually. (they walk for a moment)
Perez: Are you going to forgive him? I mean, he didn’t actually kill her.
Janet: He didn’t know that. He was going to kill me, Damerae.
Perez: I really doubt he’d have followed through with that.
Janet: You didn’t see the look in his eyes. (sighs)
Perez: (stops walking and takes Janet by the shoulder) Begging your pardon, Janet, but everyone’s seen the look in his eyes. I’m not a big fan of any of the giants, especially a spook like that one, but I have to admit that he has a soft spot in his heart for you. He would not have shot you.
Janet: But he still shot Shari. I can not forget that. (She walks away. Perez shakes her head and follows)
