Two days later, T'Pol woke to a shrill alarm. She found herself squeezed between a shoulder and the pillow. Over her head, a great arm waved menacingly, slapping the shelf beside the bed.
"What are you doing, Hoshi?"
"Hitting snooze," the human mumbled.
"That's the communicator," T'Pol explained. "I don't believe it has a snooze function."
"Communic… They're back!" She scooped up her little lover and ran to the command deck. Standing by the pilot station she lowered T'Pol to the seat, then activated the transponder and the radio.
"Enterprise! This is Sato! I'm in orbit. In the ship currently transmitting a transponder ID of Aleph Five Niner Blue Tango."
"We're receiving you, Hoshi," Archer's voice came from the speaker.
"And sir! You'll never, ever guess what I found!"
"Uh…" There was a humorous tone in the captain's voice. "Well, I'd guess that you found a life form, real or artificial, that resembles a teeny, tiny version of our former science officer."
"One that apparently eats clothing," Reed's voice added. Hoshi covered her breasts and sank down behind the pilot's chair. T'Pol covered herself and looked around the cockpit.
"We never did locate that camera, did we?" she asked.
-----
They were dressed by the time Mayweather docked the second shuttle. All the department heads boarded for the reunion. They were hesitant to accept the micro-T'Pol as accurate until Phlox finished a few scans.
"She appears to match the mass that went missing four years ago."
"And she knows things only the original T'Pol knew," Hoshi added. "I tested her quite extensively."
"Okay. Okay," Archer finally said. "Welcome back, T'Pol. We missed you." He started gesturing people back to the shuttles. "I guess we'll put an orange crate in front of the science station…"
"Captain! If I can be reunited with my original body, I may be able to transfer my katra back to its rightful place."
"Really?" He lifted the little officer over the lip of the airlock door. "That'd be handy. " He watched her walk to the shuttle's hatch where Hoshi swept her up and inside. "Not as cute," he muttered, "but handy."
Phlox sent messages to Chippugh's wives and they arranged collection of his ship and remains. T'Pol helped Hoshi send messages to her parents, to the The Vulcan Therapeutic Facility and to Ambassador Soval on Earth.
The Ambassador requested and received Starfleet's concurrence for the Enterprise to depart from their PATORD and travel directly to Vulcan.
He was waiting at the entrance to the Facility as Archer landed the shuttle. Two of the senior doctors of the staff waited with him. Soval spoke as the group of officers approached.
"Captain Archer! I've been discussing your request with Doctor Tessel and High Doctor Srumal. They feel that your story is long on drama and short on credibility. Or, as your late Admiral Forrest might have put it, we're not drunk enough to buy it."
Archer smiled at the memory of Forrest. "He might, sir, he might. But then…" He stepped aside and gestured at Hoshi. She bent to lower T'Pol to the baked dirt of the path. "I brought visual aids."
"What is this farce?" one of the other Vulcans sneered. Soval ignored him and stepped closer.
"If you are indeed my former aide, you will remember the combination to the safe in my desk at the Embassy in San Francisco." He also made a recognition gesture with his hand.
"Your safe was in the wall behind your desk," T'Pol said. "And the lock was keyed to your left thumb, not a combination." She returned the gesture with the countergesture.
"Interesting," he said quietly. "Captain, this situation rivals our oldest and least credible myths. But I must admit, it does offer me some hope."
"Surely you are not accepting this…this wild tale at face value!" a doctor protested.
"It at least warrants further investigation," Soval replied.
"And stop calling him Shirley," Archer added. The doctor's scowl of disapproval melted into one of confusion.
The other doctor stepped forward. "I look forward to plumbing the depths of the possibilities here, Soval. T'Pol. If you can come with me? The humans can wait in the lobby, or return to their vessel. This may take some time."
"Actually," T'Pol said, "I was hoping that Ensign Sato might accompany me? We've…been growing rather close of late. She is… She is my friend."
"What!?!" The protesting doctor turned and stomped off. "Obviously, even if she is who she claims, she is no longer sufficiently Vulcan. I depart else the madness might be contagious."
After a brief glance at his departing colleague, Srumal offered a nod to Sato. "I welcome a little madness from time to time. The centuries get boring without it."
Soval shook his head. "I don't know if I would go that far. But at least, after what T'Pol has allegedly been through, I'd certainly let her choose her company for the difficulties ahead. One….'friend' will not disrupt the tests or the ceremony."
"I'd let her take a marching band if she asked," Archer noted. Soval stared at him for a second.
"I have a kazoo," Travis said.
"I can make a whistle out of an ammo cartridge," Reed added. "Or at least a whistling sound."
"I never go anywhere without my harmonica," Tucker said.
"I," Phlox said, "know the words to over four hundred human melodies."
Soval glanced from face to face. The officers gazed back as if offering a challenge. Finally, the ambassador nodded and gestured towards the facility. "I believe the acoustics will be better within," he said.
------
T'Pol was still a little shaky after the ceremony but she wouldn't wait. Sato steadied her as they walked into the lobby. The humans clearly showed their delight on seeing her, but kept their distance for a moment.
"I am having difficulty walking, but it will pass," she assured them. "I am not fragile. And I know that emotionally stressed humans need to express themselves with physical demonstrations." She pushed off of Sato's shoulders and stood. "If I must suffer from something as distasteful as a hug, then let us get it over with."
The visitors surged forward. She raised a hand, palm out. "Not a group hug, though. That would be vulgar." The Earthlings and the Denobulan sorted themselves out in some unfathomable pecking order. Each gathered her into a gentle embrace. She made sure her face indicated that she was putting up with the emotional display as a duty to them, despite her real feelings.
"Glad to have you back," Archer said.
"What did you do with the replica?" Phlox asked.
"I left it a bit of my intellect," T'Pol said. Not enough to cripple me or my abilities, I assure you, Captain."
"I wasn't worried," Archer said.
"But I left her smarter than she was when she was Chippugh's….guest."
"But what will they do with her?" Travis asked.
"Study her, of course. Find out the limitations of her tiny brain, see if she can develop a greater-"
There was a shriek in one of the hallways of the facility. Someone shouted in Vulcan. Then the tiny replica of T'Pol ran into the room. She looked around briefly and ran straight to Hoshi. Ducking behind the surprised Ensign, she grabbed her around the leg and held on tight.
"I stay with Hoshi!" she shrieked. "With Hoshi! Hoshi friends little T'Pol. Hoshi want little dolly!"
Two medical technicians came into the room, saw the tiny figure and moved forward. "HOSHI!" she screamed. T'Pol raised a hand and the two technicians stopped moving.
"She followed me home, Captain," Hoshi said quietly. She reached down to stroke the frightened creature's back. "Can I keep her?"
"That would be up to T'Pol, I think," Archer said.
"She has not followed you home, Ensign Sato," T'Pol said. Hoshi's face crumpled. "At least, not until you get her home, that is."
Everyone but the Vulcans smiled.
The endedness….
