"Oh my god! I'm so freakin' bored!"
"Dean, we've only been here for a day," Dean glared across the motel room at his brother silently yelling back 'no one asked you!' He was always almost never happy unless he was doing something. He didn't like to sit or do nothing. He didn't have the patience.
"What are you doing anyway?" Dean grumbled. Sam looked up from his computer screen and over to his brother briefly before looking back down.
"Oh, just doin' some research,"
"On the demon?" Dean asked, sitting up so he was on the edge of the bed.
"Um, no, I'm trying to figure out what this is." Sam answered, holding up the small rock that had fallen out of his pocket the day before.
"You're lookin' up rocks?" Dean questioned curiously.
"I don't think that it's really just a rock. Look at it, it's polished and cut. She didn't just find this in her yard or something. When I was in the house I think I saw bunch of similar different colored one to this on a mantle scattered around some other stuff, but I can't be sure."
"You think those stone might be for a ritual or something?" Dean asked, now interested in what his brother was doing.
"If it is a Death Dealer demon they don't have anything to do with magical artifacts or ritual. They just kind of come when they are called. So, it doesn't have anything to do with that, but it could mean that the victim's mother was right about them being witches. And if they are witches they could have a better chance of summoning it and are using it for themselves." Sam answered. "I think I found it."
Dean got up and walked around behind his brother to read the screen. "Malachite, a stone that has light and dark green banded areas. In some folklore and myths, malachite is said to have powers that include protection, power, peace, and love. It is worn to detect impending danger, and is thought to break into pieces when danger is near. It is the guardian stone of travelers. Promotes inner peace and hope, provides protection and security. Nifty, what's it mean?"Dean asked suspiciously.
"I think maybe she knows something, something that's going on. She could know about the demon or about what he family maybe involved in."
"And you think she gave you this rock for protection?" Sam shrugged.
"I've read somewhere that children often disassociate things because they don't understand them. Maybe she saw something or knows something that's going on, knows that something bad is going to happen, and is subconsciously trying to help."
"I wanna talk to this kid." Dean said going to get his coat.
"Dean, you can't." Sam told him as he leaned back in his chair.
"Watch me Sam," Dean added walking out the door.
"Dean, wait, what do you think she's gonna say! You can't just go up to a six year old and ask her if she knows what demon killed her family member! She may not know anything at all." Sam asked running after his brother out the door.
"I don't know Sam, but if some kid thinks I'm in danger and gave you a rock 'cause a stuffed rabbit told her, I wanna know why!" Dean answered, getting into the Impala.
Sam sighed and looked up at the sky in exasperation. He knew that talking to Dean when he was set on something was pointless, so he hopped in the Impala before he could drive off without him.
The Impala never made it to its destination. As the black Chevy roared down the street, it came to a creeping stop on the side of the street. "What do you think happened?" Sam asked as he and his brother looked at the crowd of people semi-circled around a line of police tape.
"I don't know, but let's go find out." Dean cut off the car and got out with Sam as they went to join the crowd.
As they got closer, they could hear whispers of 'dead,' 'tragic,' and 'what could have done this?'
"Excuse me ma'm, could you tell us what's going on?" An elderly woman turned around to look up at the Winchesters.
"They found that Sands boy this morning, dead as a door nail. Police say that he was attacked by some animal on his way home and got drag off into the woods. It's just so tragic."
"An animal? Like a dog or something?" Dean asked, and the woman just shrugged. Dean tapped his brother and they moved around the crowd and ducked under the police tape.
"Hey, you can be here! This is a crime scene!" A balding, over weight officer in a worn police uniform yelled at them. Khaki was definitely not his color, and men like him really needed a material that breathed.
"We know. We're with the Wild Life Service. I'm agent Bruce, this is my partner agent Lee. We heard you all had an animal attack hear last night."
"And how would you know that? We just found him this morning." The aging officer asked in a questioning, jack-assery, tone.
"Well you do know that it is state and national law that any animal attacks on the public need to be brought to the attention of the WLS bureau immediately in order to prevent any other unwanted incidents, right?" Dean said in a similar, but not so jack ass, tone.
"Y-Yes, yes, of course I knew that," The bumbling officer replied.
"Well then, if you wouldn't mind stepping out of the way, we'd like to go inspect the body. See what we're dealing with." And with that they walked around the stammering officer and into the crime scene.
The duo walked over to the large group within the crime and saw a body lying sprawled on the ground. "Hi, were from US Wild Life Service, we were told there was an animal attack here last night." Dean pitched again.
"Sorry to waste your time, but this wasn't an animal attack." The coroner said, taking off his gloves and standing.
"Looks pretty animalistic to me," Dean said, looking over the beat up corpse.
"Oh, there no doubt that an animal did this, but all of these wounds were post-mortem. Those drag marks from the street and abrasions on his back and arms indicate that he was dragged over here. There isn't a scratch on his that isn't pre-mortem, except for this weird burn on his neck. I'll have more definitive cause of death when I get him on the slab."
"Alright, well thank you for your time."
"Did you seem that mark? It's the same one." Sam said once they were a fair distance away from the crowd and the crime scene.
"Yep, looks like we got ourselves a serial killer demon. Come on let's get goin'."
"Wait, wait, Dean stop." The older Winchester stopped trying to get back in the Impala.
"What, what is it Sam?"
"It's her." Dean closed the door and looked over to where his brother was staring across the street.
"Her who Sam?"
"Audrey, the one I told you about." Dean hummed and closed the car door.
"Yeah, I've seen her before. She was at the first guy's funeral, I met her real quick before they got yelled at," Dean said, finally seeing the girl through the front glass window of a store, "Well don't be shy little brother, let's go say hello."
When the boys opened the door to the shop, a bell above the door signaled their arrival. "I'll be with you in a minute!" They heard looking around the small shop filled with oils, perfumes, soaps, and holistic wears as they headed around the corner were the voice had come from. "Can I help you with something?" The boys looked up as the long, auburn haired woman called down from her ladder, stocking inventory on the very tall book cases that lined the wall she was propped against.
"Hi, do you remember me? We spoke yesterday." Audrey looked down at them. A little confused look flickering across her face for a moment that they were there.
"Yeah, I remember you."
"We just had a couple more questions for you, but take your time if you're busy. You don't have to rush down." Sam called back up.
"Seriously…" Dean mumbled quietly, not too discretely staring at the brunette's dark denim clad ass, and getting a sharp elbow from his brother. "Ow!" He muttered in return.
"How'd you find me? Did my Aunts send you here?"Audrey asked, tossing the now empty box to the ground.
"Uh, no, we saw you in the window, thought we'd stop in." Sam offered as an explanation, still smiling up at her.
"Well, that's not weird at all." Audrey said sarcastically as she came down. Sam looked away with a bit of nervousness,
"Yeah, I guess a little when you think about it." Dean rolled his eyes a little and sighed at the brunettes before coughing to remind him that he was still there. "Oh! Um, this is my brother Dean. The one I told you about was helping with your cousin's case"
"Hi Audrey, I'm Dean" Dean said with an out stretched hand and a smile. Dean straining not to laugh at his brother stammering like a twelve year old or scold him for giving their real names.
"You know my name?" Audrey asked, arching a brow and crossing her arms when they were done.
"Oh yeah, Sammy just went on and on about you, hasn't shut up about 'ca."
"He's joking." Sam corrected, blushing a little and tempted to punch Dean in the arm to wipe the smirk off his face. Audrey let out a tiny bubble of laughter at them.
The trio was broken out of their moment when the bell above the door jingled through the store loudly again. "So, I swear I'm getting' gyped like two or three chicken nuggets in my twenty piece every time. I swear, nothing is sacred anymore if people are messin' with a woman's chicken nug-Hello…" The blonde stopped ranting when she rounded the corner and saw other people were standing there and looking confused.
"Did you get my sandwich?" Audrey asked as the blonde walked past the brothers and her sister to the back counter, seeming oblivious to the rant about sacrilege and chicken nuggets.
"Out of chicken, got you tuna," The blonde answered.
"I hate tuna." Audrey replied like it should be common knowledge.
"What's the difference?"
"The difference is I hate tuna."
"It a salad thingy! It's a bunch of mayo and some sort of meat product on bread!"
"Yeah, a meat product that's not chicken!"
"Then don't eat it!"
Sam and Dean glanced at each other with smiles of amusement. Leave it to siblings turn to grown up into children over practically trivial things.
Audrey seemed to remember that other people in the room, and ran her fingers through her long hair with a forced smile. "Sam, Dean, this is my sister Nicki. Nicki, this is Sam and Dean Winchester." She said, but knew that they had probably known that already.
"Hi," Dean said with a whole new smirk, and a wave.
"Dean, hn? You look more like a Jack to me." Nicki said with an obvious sarcasm as she titled her head and sucked on the straw of her drink. Dean smirked and laughed nervously.
"All right, you caught me. We're working undercover on your cousin's case. Strictly hush hush. Didn't want unnecessary civilians to be involved in the investigation then need be, you know?" Dean answered off the cuff. Sam, for all of his brother fault, really did admire how quick he was on his feet with things like this.
"Hm…nope, but I also don't care. If you want to crash a funeral that's your business, creepy but your business" Nicki replied with a bored shrug.
"Ignore her. She's a little bitchy cause they problem forgot her toy in her kid's meal too." Audrey said over her shoulder, giving her sister a look. Nicki mouthed an 'ow' but continued to drink her soda quietly. "So what did you want to ask about?'" She asked, moving her hands into her back pockets.
"Do you know a Brian Sands by any chance?" Audrey made a face of being taken aback at Sam's question.
"Brian Sands? Why do you want know about him?"
"We think that he may be connected to what happened to your cousin. He had a similar mark on his neck that your cousin had on his hand." Sam answered.
"I knew him," The grouped looked over to the blonde in the corner.
"You knew Brian Sands?" Sam questioned and she made a face.
"Well, not really on a real deep personal, spiritual level. I knew him more in the...biblical sense. I guess you can say we dated for a while, but it was nothing really serious."
"You said you broke up because he asked you to move in with him." Audrey retorted.
"Did I? Hm, wow that makes me sounds really bitchy, did I really do that?" Nicki pondered this thought as she sucked on her soda some more.
"Alright, Sam, we should probably get going, let these ladies get back to their lunch. It was nice meeting you two." Dean said with a smile. Sam waved and followed his brother out the door.
"Oh, wait, could you maybe tell me what this is? The little girl at your house gave it to me. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't anything important" Sam asked, turning back, and holding out the green stone.
Audrey gave him a scrupulous look, but took the stone in her hand and examined it. "It's a piece of malachite. It's used for protection. We have a bunch of them in the house, you can keep it."
"Oh, thank you," Sam said with a smile, taking the stone back and putting it in his pocket. "It was nice meeting you." The blonde her addressed raised her eyebrows to signal she heard him and flickered her fingers as he and his brother left the store.
"What do you think Dean?" Sam asked as they walked back to the car for a second time.
"Two victims, both with connections to those them, working knowledge of possible occult, possibly creepy little child, I'd say we got our first good lead." He answered getting back into the Impala.
