Chapter 5
FBI Headquarters - Wednesday 9:30 AM Skinner picked up the case file that he was to assign to Melinda during their meeting that morning. The case file had been on his desk from the day before and he had waited until the last possible minute to assign it to her, hoping another agent would miraculously have some time free so he didn’t have to place Melinda on that specific case. There were several leads on a serial killer making his rounds in the northeast and he needed to send her out to follow up and conduct some interviews. The entire case made him feel uneasy but he knew he had to put his personal feelings aside. Melinda was more than perfectly capable to handle the case as she had done many times before they had become an item. His feelings were conflicted and he knew this was the reason why superiors did not get involved with agents. He hated this and knew he didn’t have much of a choice but to let her go. The sound of the intercom buzzed knocking him out of his thoughts. “Yes.” “Agent Carlyle is here for her 10:00 with you, sir.” “Thank you. Send her in.” The door to his office opened and she walked in. The site of her instantly changed his mood and he couldn’t help but smile when he saw her. The two hadn’t seen the other since he had left her place Sunday night, having spent the entire weekend with her in her bed. He knew they had agreed to only see each other on the weekends but he didn’t take into consideration how badly he would miss her during their time apart. She took a seat in front of his desk and gave him a sweet smile. “Good Morning.” She said in a low voice. “Good Morning.” He stared at her for a minute taking her in. She looked beautiful as always, the only difference this time was that she was his now. “You have something for me sir?” She asked trying to get his attention back to the reason for their meeting. “Uh…, yes. Sorry.” Handing her the case file. “There are a couple of leads on the Miller serial murders that I need you to follow up on.” She began looking through the case file and nodded her head. “Yes, I’m familiar with this case. I will leave today.” His heart felt heavy when he heard her say those words. ‘Well of course she would have to leave, but how am I supposed to protect her if she does.’ His brain raced and an urge overcame him to grab the case file back from her. She looked up at him and looked at him questioningly. “Sir, is everything alright?” “Hmm?” “Walter.” She used his first name to let him know that she was referring to him. He let out a long sigh and turned his head to look at the office door then back at her. “Just…be careful…agent.” She nodded her head, looking concerned. “Yes, sir. Of course.” She stood and approached his desk both looking back at the other. Both silently acknowledging the other, knowing that any intimate words between the two of them would be entirely inappropriate in this setting. With a sad smile Melinda turned to leave the office. “Melinda.” She stopped in her tracks. Getting up from his desk he hurried over to her and placed a hand on her shoulder, standing in front of her now. The two looked at the other and he pulled her into him wrapping his arms around her in a tight hug. She let herself fall into him and wrapped her arms back around him. The hug only lasted a moment before he placed a kiss on her forehead and let her go, walking back to his desk again. She stood stuck to her spot for a moment longer and then left his office. ------ Melinda headed home straight after her meeting with Skinner that morning to pack an overnight bag. She didn’t quite know how long she would be gone so she kept her bag light. She didn’t think she would be any longer than a day or two if the interviews went well and according to schedule. She couldn’t get the hug he gave her that morning, out of her mind. He was obviously uncomfortable with her leaving but she felt like there was something he wanted to tell her. She figured they would talk about it this weekend. Melinda’s cell phone rang as she exited the cab at the airport. She noticed Agent Mulder’s number and made her way to a quiet corner. “Hello?” “Agent Carlyle, its Mulder.” “Hey Mulder, what’s up? I’m just getting to the airport on my way out of town.” “I know, that’s why I’m calling. I have some information that may be helpful with an interview you have scheduled tomorrow. I’d like to fly up tonight to meet with you.” “Sure, hold on a second let me get you the hotel I’ll be staying at.” She dug through her bag and found the information she needed relaying the address to him over the phone. They planned to meet later that night to discuss the new information on the case. She was curious what Mulder had for her. Later that day, Melinda made her way back to the hotel after an exhausting interview which turned out to be a complete waist of time. She felt grimy from the flight up and couldn’t wait to sink herself into a nice hot bath when she returned to her room. Mulder wasn’t expected to come in for another few hours so she looked forward to the down time. As soon as she entered her room, she flopped herself across the bed. It was never any fun staying in a hotel room by herself. Her mind drifted to Walter and their weekend together. By Sunday night she was literally begging for mercy, she couldn’t believe the virility of the man, he was constantly hard for her. Although she had to admit to herself that she loved it, her pussy was out of practice and needed time to recuperate. She was glad for the week breaks in between but missed him terribly while they were apart. She felt her pocket vibrate and reached into her suit jacket to grab her cell phone. The person on the other line claimed he was a representative of the man she had interviewed earlier that day and stated that there were some details left out of the initial interview. Would they be able to meet at a restaurant down the street from where she was staying? After agreeing on the time and place, Melinda’s thoughts raced trying to remember if she had mentioned where she was staying during the interview earlier that afternoon. Shrugging it off she forced herself to get up, at least to try and freshen up a little before she headed back out. Before heading out the door again she called Mulder and left him a message to let him know that in case she wasn’t around when he arrived that she had been called back out to do a follow up interview. She gave him the name and address of the restaurant she would be at. On her way out of the hotel she left a note at the reception desk for him with the same information. ------ Agent Mulder looked curiously at the message that was handed to him by the reception desk. He had headed straight to the restaurant after checking in almost an hour ago. Both the seating hostess and the manager told him that they had not seen anyone fitting the description of Melinda and told him that very few customers had come in prior to that time. Confused he headed back to the hotel to see if their paths had somehow crossed and thought it odd that she would have gone to a different location without reporting in first. He looked at his watch, after 8:00 pm, he wondered if she had called into Skinner’s office. Dialing Skinner’s direct line, he knew the man never went home and would probably still be in the office. “Skinner.” “Sir, this is Agent Mulder.” “What can I do for you Agent Mulder?” “Sir, have you heard from Agent Carlyle at all today? I was hoping she might have checked in with your office.” There was silence on the other end. “Sir?” “She reported to my office this morning.” “What about in the afternoon, say around 5:00 pm?” “No…I haven’t heard from her. Do you have reason to believe that something may be wrong Agent Mulder? If you do I need to know now.” “No sir. I just found it odd that she wasn’t in either of the locations she left for me in her messages. I’ll ask around, she may just have run out for dinner or something.” “Agent Mulder…call me as soon as you hear from her.” “Uh, yes sir. No problem.” He hung up the phone and headed out to retrace her possible steps in the past couple of hours. ------ Skinner sat staring at the phone on his desk mortified by the conversation he had just had with Mulder. Picking up the phone again he dialed Melinda’s cell phone number which went straight to voicemail. “Melinda...its Skinner. Call me when you get this.” Hanging up the phone again his heart raced, the pulsing of his blood pounding in his ears. He was not prepared to receive the call that came in an hour later notifying him that Melinda had been shot and was being transfer to a county hospital for emergency surgery. He had never bolted out of his office faster than he had that day. ----- Melinda woke with a sharp pain in her side and the sound of voices from overhead somewhere. Forcing her eyes open the first thing she saw was an IV pole and then a machine of some sort beeping in intervals. She tried to remember what happened before she blacked out but her first thought was Walter. In attempt to turn her head she could feel the pain shoot through her side again and she let out a low groan. “Yeah, getting shot will do that to you. Here let me help.” Agent Mulder’s face came into focus as he stood over her and helped prop her pillows up so she could turn her head forward. “Agent Mulder, where am I?” “Hospital, hon.” “I was shot?” “Oh yeah. Thought we were going to lose you there for a minute. You’re ok now.” Her first thought was to ask where Walter was but was afraid that question would only raise more questions. “Was my sister called?” “Jane? Yes, I talked to her personally. She’s quite upset Melinda. When you’re up to it you can use my phone to call her.” Their eyes both moved to the doorway leading to the hallway when they heard a loud voice coming from outside. Before long the voice got closer and her heart stopped when she saw Walter enter the room followed by a flustered nurse. “Nurse, it’s ok.” Her voice strained to come out, wincing at the pain in her side. “Melinda, Jesus, are you ok?” He practically ran to her bedside looking at her and then over to Agent Mulder. “Agent Mulder, would you mind stepping out for a moment. I just need to talk to Agent Carlyle for a minute in private.” “Of course, excuse me.” Agent Mulder caught Melinda’s eye as he stood to leave. “Can I get you anything?” “No, I’m fine. Thank you Agent Mulder.” They watched as Agent Mulder escorted the frustrated nurse out, Walter followed closing the curtain around her bed for privacy. Turning to look at her, he could only stare at her. Shutting his eyes he whispered. “I thought I had lost you. I don’t know what I would have done.” “Walter, come here.” She reached her hand out to him. He walked over and sat at the edge of her bed leaning over to place a kiss on her forehead, holding it there for a long moment. “I love you Melinda. I don’t want another minute to go by without you knowing that.” She felt a tear hit her cheek as he kissed her head again before backing away to see the tears that had built up in his eyes. “I love you too Walter. I’m so sorry about this. I don’t know what happened…” He cut her off by hushing her and took her hand in his lifting it to his lips. “I only care that you’re ok. That’s all I care about. ” ......While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
