Dean woke up in the middle of the night to see Liam sitting by the window. “Can’t sleep again?” Dean sat up.
“Nope,” Liam answered. “So I’m just looking at the stars.”
“Well, get back here, let me see if I can relax you,” Dean beckoned him. Liam sighed and sat on the bed beside his mate. Dean started massaging his shoulders and kissed the side of his neck. “Maybe if you talked to me about what’s on your mind.” Liam huffed, but remained silent. “I see, you can’t lie to me so you’re pleading the fifth. Bottling it up is only going to make it worse, you know.”
Liam turned to Dean. “What’s the point? There’s nothing you can do.”
Dean stroked Liam’s hair. “I can listen while you get things off your chest. You have not been sleeping well for months for one reason or another, and it hurts me to see you like this.”
“Does it?” Liam said with an accusing tone.
Dean sighed and shook his head. “Liam, what exactly do you want me to do? I try to show you love in every way I can think of. Nothing seems to be good enough, and you know, this is getting a little frustrating here.”
“Told you talking wasn’t going to do any good. Like it or not, the doubts have set up a permanent residence in my head. You’re straight and I’m a freak, so what are we doing here?”
Dean pulled Liam down so that they were lying next to each other. “You are not a freak. You’re a little different, I’ll give you that, but does different have to be bad? As for me being straight, apparently I’m not.”
“You never look at other men, only women. That doesn’t exactly make me feel secure.”
Dean rolled over on top of Liam to kiss him deeply. Then he gazed deep into his eyes. “The best way I can explain it is I fell in love with a person, and I don’t care what’s between your legs. You’re extremely smart, very sweet and caring, a kick ass hunter… I couldn’t ask for better. So please, relax and try to get some sleep.”
“Can I listen to your heart?”
“If that comforts you, sure. Personally, the sound drove me nuts, but...”
Liam shrugged. “Once you get used to it, the heartbeat of someone you love can be very comforting.”
Dean pulled Liam close and the blond put his head on Dean’s chest to listen to his heart. The next thing he knew it was daylight and he was alone. He dressed and everything and went downstairs. “There’s my sleeping beauty,” Dean smiled and came over to kiss him. “We caught a case, but it is almost lunch time, and you need to eat, so...”
“I slept that late?” Liam looked surprised.
“Babe, it was almost five in the morning when you fell asleep. You needed it. Natalie has chicken nuggets in the oven, so go get packed quick, then we’ll eat, and we’ll go.”
“Where are we going and what are we looking into?”
“Calumet City, Illinois. There have been an unusual amount of suicides.”
Liam nodded and got his bag packed up. When he was finished they sat down to eat. John sat with them in his high chair feeding himself pieces of diced up chicken nugget. When they finished Sam hugged John. “I love you, John, I’ll see you in a little bit.” He kissed John’s cheek and gave Natalie a kiss on the lips before leaving. “It’s really never easy to leave,” Sam sighed as he got in the passenger seat. “Especially when I might not see him again.”
“Don’t think like that,” Dean said as he pulled out onto the road. “I mean, yeah, we’ve gotten into tight scrapes, but we’ve always managed to pull through. What we do is dangerous, but you gotta stay positive.”
They arrived at their destination and they interviewed one woman’s sister. It took a little poking and prodding to get the truth out of her, but her last conversation with her sister had been a bad case of verbal diarrhea and she’d said some pretty nasty things.
“See anything in the house?” Sam asked as they left.
Dean shook his head. “No hex bags, no sulfur, no EMF. You?”
“A tuba and an issue of ‘Crochet Today’. So, what, already kinda suicidal?”
“Right, and then big sis's Taxicab Confession sends her over the edge. Question is, what made big sis open her big fat mouth in the first place?”
“That’s the million dollar question,” Liam agreed as they got into the car.
They caught a whiff of a dentist killing a patient. They sent Sam to talk to the guy and Dean volunteered to do research. Liam looked really tired, so he convinced the blond to lie down for a bit and he soon fell asleep.
Sam called and Dean picked up quickly so it wouldn’t wake Liam. “Anything from Marathon Man?”
“Not exactly,” Sam answered. “He hung himself in his cell before I could get to him. But he was definitely involved. Just got the scoop from his assistant.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah. Let's say the stuff that his patient was confessing to, I'd have murdered him, too.”
“So, root canal and Russian roulette, both of them, it's like they were cursed, right? I mean, people are just compelled to puke the truth all over them?”
“Oh, getting hit with the ugly truth, you go postal? I'd call that a curse. Do me a favor. I'm going to the morgue to check out the body. Why don't you take the dentist's office, see what you see?”
“Yeah. No problem.” Dean hung up and kissed Liam’s temple before heading out.
Dean checked out the office, but didn’t really find anything. He stopped at a bar for a drink when Sam called. “Hey, what's up?”
“All the bodies are gone,” Sam told him.
“What do you mean, they just vanished?”
“That's what the coroner said. But I got a lead. One of the missing bodies, she died a whole week before everybody else.”
“Suicide?”
“Reported as a car accident, but no reason it couldn't have been.”
“So then that would make her our patient zero, right?”
“I'm thinking maybe. Whatever got this whole curse thing rolling started with her. I'm at her place now, corner of Burnham and 159th.”
“Yeah, give me ten.”
Dean drove out to the place and met Sam. “I found something,” Sam said. Sam showed him the box and they took it back to the motel.
Liam was on the bed watching TV. “Dean, where’d you go?” Liam looked a little upset.
“Sorry, just went to check some things out. You were sleeping and you needed it so I just didn’t want to wake you.”
“Find anything?”
“Yeah,” Dean showed him the box and pulled out the cat skull. “Obsessed chick offed her own pet.”
Sam took the box and opened the laptop. “All right, so cat skull, uh, grains of paradise seed, devil's shoestring. Mix 'em well, you got yourself a summoning spell.”
“Demon?” Dean asked.
Sam showed them a web page about Veritas, the goddess of truth. “God. Corey was so desperate for the truth about her boyfriend's cheating heart, she went digging around. Nothing panned out, so she went looking for a different kind of help.”
Dean studied the page. “Opened a door she couldn't close.”
Sam nodded. “Yeah. Now anyone in town who asks aloud for the truth invokes Veritas. And she doesn't just give it to you. She slams you with it until you kill yourself and she gets her tribute.”
“So, all that tribute vanishing from the morgue. What do you think, uh, Soylent Green situation?”
“Gods got to eat too.”
“Alright, well, what do we know, besides crazy cat lady?”
“Well, dogs are her Achilles heel. And she was a pretty hands on goddess back in the day. Her thing was coming down from the mountain to speak truth to the masses. She wanted more than tribute. She wanted to be worshiped.”
“And what is the twenty first century version of speaking truth to the masses?”
“Television news anchor,” Liam pointed to a woman on the television.
Dean thought about it. “You might have something there.”
They stole some footage of her and settled down to watch it. They took turns all night until sometime the next day they got to footage of the woman reporting with a dog barking at her in the background. “Hold on, pause and magnify that,” Liam said as he stared at the image.
Sam paused and magnified it, focusing on her eyes. “Check this out,” he looked to Dean. Her eyes had a very slight glow.
That night they followed the reporter home. Dean handed out knives and Sam opened a jar of dog blood. “Do I even want to know where you got that?” Dean asked.
“Probably not,” Sam answered.
They each dipped the blade in the blood. “Alright, let's do this,” Dean got out of the car and the other two followed.
They entered the house and everything looked normal. They followed a cat into the basement and found bloody dismembered corpses. “You came for dinner,” Veritas came in behind them. They all three went flying into the wall and were knocked unconscious.
They woke tied to posts. Veritas walked over to the dentist’s body and ripped out his tongue and started eating it. “The tongue is the tastiest part. It's where the lies roll off. I cannot wait to eat yours. I mean, I've seen liars before, but you three? Gold standard.”
“Point of professional pride,” Dean smirked.
“I wouldn't be so cocky if I were you, Dean. You know what happens when you base your life on lies, right? The truth comes along and... So, while you've still got your tongue, I think it's your turn to spill some. How about we play a little truth or truth? What should we ask Dean first, hmm?” She looked to Liam. “Oh, I know, this should be fun. Dean, how do you really feel about your boy toy over there?”
Dean closed his eyes and clenched his jaw as if he were trying to fight her. “He’s a pain in the ass psycho freak.”
Liam put his head back and looked up at the ceiling, clearly very wounded. “Ouch,” Veritas smirked. “I’ll bet that hurts.”
“But despite his flaws, and because of his good points, I love him more than I ever thought I could love anybody.”
“What about that dream you had about Lisa?” Liam asked. “Since you have to tell the truth, you would prefer a woman, wouldn’t you?”
Dean closed his eyes. “I don’t want to hurt you, but yes, it would make me feel more comfortable. I envy my brother. A woman and a kid is what I want.”
Liam was close to tears. Since Sam was being ignored he was able to slice through the rope with a knife that was up his sleeve. He grabbed one of the blood covered knives from where they had been left and he attacked her. She managed to pin him and stared choking him.
Dean fought to get free, and when he managed to he also grabbed a knife and stabbed her in the back. Dean then turned to Liam who had tears streaming down his cheeks. Sam moved to untie him, but Dean held up a hand. “Let me talk to him while he’s still restrained.”
He knelt down by Liam and stoked his wet cheek. Liam pulled away. Dean frowned. “Look, I’m sorry.”
Liam sniffed. “At least now I know what I suspected is true. Just go. Leave me here.”
“Can’t do that,” Dean stroked Liam’s hair. “Did you miss the part where I said I love you more than anything? I couldn’t lie when I said it, so you’ve got to believe it. So please, when I untie you don’t run off on me. It would kill me.”
“You can lie now,” Liam mumbled.
“But I’m not. I have never outright lied to you. When you bring up the woman thing I just tell you how much I love you, and that’s true. I may in fact prefer a woman, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want you. You have your flaws, and hell, so do I.” He untied Liam and helped him up. “Come on. Let’s get some sleep and go home.”
Liam cried the whole way back to the motel and insisted on getting his own room for the night. In the morning Sam went to Dean’s room and found him lying in bed staring at the wall. “You okay, man?” Sam asked his brother.
“He’s gone,” Dean whimpered. “He never went to get his own room here, the guy at the front desk said he left.”
“Oh, man,” Sam sighed and sat on the edge of the bed and put a hand on his brother’s shoulder. “I’m sorry. We’ll look for him before we leave, okay?”
“Okay,” Dean nodded and sat up. “I really didn’t want to hurt him.”
“I know you didn’t, but there’s a reason why they say the truth hurts.”
They searched everywhere, even checking the bus station. Sam had to hold Dean steady when the woman at the counter told them a man matching Liam’s description had bought a ticket to Jamaica, Vermont. “We gotta go get him!” Dean insisted.
“I don’t know, I think that might make things worse. He’s injured and running.”
“You don’t understand, we gotta go get him!”
“Okay,” Sam nodded. “I think I’ll drive though. You’re way too upset.”
They called Bobby to ask where Jason’s house was, then made the fourteen hour drive. The car drove up a dirt road to a very run down looking cabin that looked dark and uninhabited. Dean approached the door and paused before opening it.
Liam was lying on a very dusty looking moth eaten couch. There was a fire in the fireplace, but the room was still pretty cold. The blond looked up at Dean kind of surprised. “You came.”
“Yeah,” Dean nodded. “You’re very important to me. What, you were just going to live here now?”
Liam shrugged. “It’s technically my house. Why not?”
Dean looked around. “There’s no… anything. It’s freezing in here because the place is so drafty. This place isn’t livable anymore.”
“Doesn’t matter. So I freeze to death, who gives a fuck...”
“I do!” Dean shouted. “Veritas, she was screwing with us, trying to create trouble. Liam, yes, I would be more comfortable with a woman, but that doesn’t change the fact that I love you. Would I take the time to hunt your ass down if I didn’t care?”
“Doesn’t change how you really feel. I’m a freak that doesn’t deserve to be loved, but I already knew that.”
Dean moved to sit on the couch. “Yeah, you weird me out a little at times, but you deserve love as much as anybody else. God, you’re cold and not even shivering. Please, come with me to a nice warm motel. We can talk all night, or whatever you want. You can be mad at me, just as long as I know you’re okay.”
Liam sighed. “Okay.”
Dean took him out to the car where Sam was waiting. “Crank the heat up, he’s freezing. Let’s find some place for the night.”
Sam pulled into a motel and Dean got them a room. “Come on, clothes off, let’s cuddle and share some body heat. Please. You were well on your way to freezing to death. That, and I really want to love on you.”
Liam did as asked and Dean crawled into bed with him. “Holy crap, you’re cold. Babe, I’m really sorry I hurt you. Can we just forget about it?”
“Not likely,” Liam answered. “You confirmed my worst fears. How am I supposed to forget that?”
“By focusing on the good,” Dean kissed Liam’s neck. “I couldn’t lie, and I told you I loved you. I really and truly do, very much. Let’s just get some sleep and go home in the morning, okay?”
“Okay,” Liam nodded and snuggled close.
