Tears were streaking Bonnie's face as she sat in her bathtub holding her knees together with the shower running. She spent every morning for the last week like this until she felt like she had no more tears and could start her day. The guilt and heartbreak were almost too unbearable, but she was Bonnie Bennett, and there was one thing she'd mastered—pretending everything was alright. And that's what she did.
Every day she smiled at Elena and pretended to care about whatever new arbitrary thing she had going on. She still hadn't worked up to looking at Damon for more than a glimpse, but neither had he. She sat in the back of the class doodling in her notebook just to pass the time. She always snuck out the back before Shane could get to her. When she ran into Caroline in the library and she asked why she didn't come to their weekly dinner she lied her ass off saying she was sick—it wasn't too far off, she was sick just with nothing diagnosable. They rescheduled for today and she was not looking forward to having to seem functional for more than an hour.
So today, like the day before, and the day before that, she wiped her tears, got up and finished her shower—her new routine. She wasn't that late for her first class. Luckily today she didn't have Psychology, so that was one less thing to worry. She doesn't pay that much attention to her Sociology lecture and she knew that was going to bite her in the ass with the test next week but she couldn't bring herself to care.
With everything going on she was too stressed to add worrying about her GPA. It's not like it actually matters, she thinks to herself. The real world doesn't care about your grades. She adds cynically. She tuned her professor out staring off into the void. When the other students started getting up from their seats that indicated that her class was over. As she passed her Professor heading for the door she stopped her.
"Ms.Bennett.” She stopped in her tracks and looked back at her professor. "Can you stay a moment?"
"Um…sure Professor Flemming."
Once the room cleared out Professor Flemming spoke. "Is everything alright with you?"
"Uh, yeah, why?"
"You've been a little withdrawn lately and you missed the last assignment. Not that I'm claiming to know you in any capacity but that seems very uncharacteristic for you. You're one of my best students and I just wanted to give you a chance before you fall completely behind. I was young once and understand life is more than just this classroom."
Bonnie internally sighed but kept her face as pleasant as possible. "Nothing's going Professor, it just slipped my mind. I can make up the assignment if you'll allow?"
"Of course you can make it up, but that's not what this is about. Sorry if I'm being a little intrusive but you don't seem alright. You don't have to tell me anything, but I wanted to let you know that if you need someone to talk to I'm here. You're one of my favorite students and I'd hate to see anything bad happen to you."
Bonnie swallowed thickly. "Thank you, Professor Flemming, but like I said nothing is going." She walked toward the door. Before she closed the door she said, "But if I do need someone to talk to I'll know where to go."
Lunch with Damon and Elena was awkward as usual except this time she didn't look at him at all—she was too preoccupied with her thoughts. She thought she was hiding it better—her pain, but if her professor was noticing she wondered what that meant her friends saw. Maybe they still knew nothing—she made more of an effort to at normal around them, but still, it threw her for a loop.
"Hello, Earth to Bonnie," Elena shouted breaking her train of thought.
"What?"
"I asked how your day was and you completely blanked on me."
"Oh, my day was fine, same as yesterday."
"Thank you, really informative."
"What do you want Elena? Not everyone has a new exciting internship at the newspaper. Some of us have very monotonous lives."
"Bonnie I was just making conversation something you haven't been doing lately."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"It means that you've…you just seem out of it lately. When you're here it doesn't feel like you're here you're always somewhere else. Which is fine but…you could let us go with you sometimes, you don't have to keep everything to yourself."
"So now I'm keeping things from you," she shouted.
"That's not what I said, Bonnie."
"I'm leaving." She got up in a huff and started walking out of the cafeteria. She didn't need this. First her professor, now Elena, she had low hopes for her dinner tonight but she didn't want to cause more suspicion.
After burying herself in the rest of her classes she headed straight over to Caroline and Stefan's determined to act normal. She didn't know how she was going to do it but the fact that it was Caroline and Stefan made it easier—they didn't demand much from her, plus she hadn't slept with either one's boyfriend, so she didn't have to feel the guilt.
When she knocked on the door Caroline greeted her enthusiastically. It was the first genuine smile she had seen in weeks and it genuinely cheered her up momentarily. Caroline always radiated so much happiness Bonnie felt like she could almost absorb it—almost.
Caroline quickly let her into the apartment. Stefan was on the couch watching TV with a beer. He immediately turned it off when he noticed Bonnie come in. He walked to her and hugged her. "It's been a while. I missed you," he said genuinely.
Bonnie laughed it off. "It hasn't been that long."
"It's been a couple weeks at least," Caroline chimes in.
"Okay, maybe it's been a while but it's not like I dropped off the face of the earth."
"You might as well have. No call or text. You could have at least told us you were sick."
"Sorry, it just slipped my mind, but I'm here now and that's all that matters."
They both concurred and moved on to dinner. Stefan made spaghetti. Neither he, nor Caroline was much of a cook, but he could make some damn good spaghetti.
Bonnie was the first to ask what they've been up to. The more they talked the less she had to lie about how tumultuous her life had become lately. As usual, Caroline was the first to talk.
"You remember that guy Jesse?" Bonnie nodded. "Well, we finally went on a real date!"
"I thought he was just something casual?"
"He was, but now he's not, I think he might even be boyfriend material"
"That's great Caroline," Bonnie said trying to sound genuine.
"It really is, and maybe this time it'll last more than a week."
Caroline glares at Stefan. "How's Valerie? Still stringing her along?"
"She's great. And I'm not even going to dignify that last question with a response."
"Well, you guys seem as functional as ever."
"Sorry, Bon, living in close quarters has kinda started to wear on us."
"I understand, well kinda, I've essentially lived alone most of my life."
"Lucky, even when my parents were gone there was still always Damon and even in that huge house he made it hard to feel alone."
Bonnie smiled slightly. "Yeah, whether good or bad he does make himself hard to ignore. Must be an eldest child thing."
"More like a Giuseppe Salvatore thing."
"Alright, that's enough Damon talk. He doesn't deserve our time or energy after what he did," Caroline said quick to remind them why they no longer speak to Damon. "So Bonnie, you haven't told us what's up with you yet."
"There isn't much to tell. The most that's happened is I got sick, but you already knew that. My life has been pretty monotonous with school."
"Really, no new guys, friends or anything?"
"Nope."
"I still don't understand how someone as gorgeous as you has been single for long. I mean Stefan you agree with me, right?"
"In my experience, if a pretty girl is single it's usually by her own choice."
"Well, that has to be the only explanation."
"Hi, I'm right here. Can hear everything you're saying."
"Sorry sweetie, I mean no offense by it. It's just, you seem lonely sometimes and I think maybe a boyfriend might help."
"I'm not lonely, and even if I was I'd just get a dog, not some random guy to fill the hole. I'm not desperate."
"No one said you were."
"Can we stop talking about tense topics? This is supposed to be a nice dinner that I made and I want everyone to enjoy it and their time."
And with that, they switched to safer topics. Caroline did most of the talking, but Bonnie still did have a good time. Some time away from all the drama in her life did her some good, but then it was time to go back home and everything she had been trying to avoid that night came flooding back. She shut off everything once again to cope, she wasn't ready to deal with the shit storm she had created.
She was at her door when she heard the all too familiar sound of the door behind her opening.
"I've said it once and I'll say it again: I am not in the mood," she said almost in a monotone. This had become a part of her nightly routine.
"I'm hurt. You don't have time for little ol' me."
"I never have time for you." She turned to him showing him just how unamused she was by him.
"That's not true. For someone who clearly lacks a social life you have nothing but time."
"What makes you think I lack a social life?"
"Easy, you spent the last few weekends in your apartment the entire time. I think I even heard you crying. Were you sad about your lack of a personal life?" he said in a mocking tone.
She sighed exhaustedly and laughed patronizingly. "Do you know how pathetic you are? You wait for me to get home every day just to antagonize me. Do you even have friends? A family? Something else? Or am I it because from where I'm standing it sounds like the pot is calling the kettle black."
"You're wrong. You don't know the first thing about me."
"But you're an expert on me right?"
"You know what? If I had feelings you might have actually hurt them. But you were right, you're not in the mood, so I'll leave until you get your shit together." With that, he went back into his apartment.
That's not happening anytime soon. She thinks sadly to herself before turning in for the night. As she lay in bed for another sleepless night she thought about how many people did actually see her pain, and for the first time ever she wished they didn't.
