Sam and Dean were in their suits walking back to the car from a house in Massachusetts. “Said you had a good feeling about that one,” Dean was a little irritated.
“Yeah, well, it seemed like a solid lead, Dean. Only a soulless psycho would kill the family cat.”
“Yeah, unless the family cat decides to take a nap in the dryer.”
“You know, we've been here since Monday and still haven't found another legit victim. Maybe Amara moved on, or stopped feeding altogether.”
“Well, finding her victims is still the best shot we got at finding her.”
“Not actually true.”
“Oh, what? You think he's ready? He's had a pretty rough go of it lately.”
“Which one of us hasn't? Seems insane to leave our one and only angel friend on the bench.”
“Fine, I'll call him when we get to the hospital. I don't feel like getting bitched out because we left Liam there all day.” Dean got into the car.
Sam chuckled as he got into the passenger seat. “Yeah, he has been anxious to get out of there, hasn't he?”
“And you know he'll wanna jump right back into things like nothing happened. You gotta help me hold him back.”
“Dean, you and I both know that resisting the hobbit's will is futile. I think you actually met someone more stubborn than you. Besides, when have you ever let an injury slow you down?”
“We're not talking about me. He is stubborn as hell, you're right about that. But I want him to take it easy for a little while. He got shot being his usual idiot self. Just because the doctor is releasing him today, that doesn't mean he's ready for action.”
They made it to the hospital and Liam was dressed and waiting for them with his arms crossed. “Took you long enough. I called you two hours ago.”
“We were chasing down another lead,” Dean explained. “Didn't go anywhere though.”
“You could've picked me up and I could've gone with you.”
“Waiting here didn't kill you. Look, I know you, and I know you don't like being left out of things, but I want you to dial it back just a bit until you're one hundred percent again, okay?”
“I'm barely in pain, so good enough,” the blond argued.
“No, not good enough. You still got stitches in you. Now cool your jets while I make a quick phone call to Cas. We're gonna see if he can find anything out.” Dean pulled out his phone and dialed.
“Hi,” Castiel answered.
“Cas. How you doing, buddy?”
“Oh, I'm fine.”
“Find anything on Metatron?”
“Um, nothing on angel radio.”
“How long's it been since you left the bunker?”
“Oh, why would I leave? I've got everything I need right here.”
“Wait. Is that... Are you watching 'Jenny Jones'?”
“It's a rerun. She's just about to announce the paternity results. Jenny, he is not ready to be a father.”
“Okay. I thought you were going with socially acceptable binge watching. Uh, you know, 'The Wire','Game of Thrones'.”
“Yeah, well, a man can't live on caviar alone, Dean.”
“Well, you sound weird, okay? Bad weird. Now, I've been down this road before. I have heard the siren's song from the idiot box, and I'm telling you, whatever you're looking for, you won't find it in there. So do me a favor. Turn off the TV. Go outside and get some air. We're in the dark here, pal. I need you back in the game, okay?” Dean hung up, and Sam ended a conversation he was having. “What's up?” Dean asked his brother.
“That was Detective Madsen. Remember our friend Len?”
“Uh, weird as hell, soulless, took the rap for all the murders Len?”
“Yeah. He's dead.”
“In a weird way that kinda sucks,” Liam said. “Suicide?”
“Yeah, it does suck,” Sam agreed. “But it wasn't a suicide.”
“Okay, so we take Liam back to the motel and we check it out,” Dean said.
“Oh, the hell you're dumping me at a motel,” Liam wasn't pleased with the idea.
“Stitches, remember?” Dean pulled up Liam's shirt to reveal the bandage.
The blond grabbed his shirt back and let it fall. “I'm not made of glass. I can go look at a crime scene with you. We will have to go back to the motel though because my suit is in my bag.”
“No, your turn to sit in front of the idiot box and heal. You know, I'm really starting to get why Jason and Alice decided to keep you immortal.”
“Take that back! Me being human makes me much easier to travel with. And my point remains, I'm still alive.”
“Thanks to modern medicine. I will handcuff you to the bed if I have to.”
“And then I'll escape and join you at the jail anyway.”
“That's probably exactly how that would go,” Sam added his opinion.
“You're probably right,” Dean grumbled and took Liam's hand to leave the hospital. “Sometimes I hate you.”
“I love you too,” Liam smirked as he followed Dean out to the car.
When they arrived at the jail the coroner was taking Len's body. The detective met them in the hall. “Thought maybe a relative of one of Len's victims, but it doesn't feel like a revenge killing. Too clean, like an assassination.”
The man with the gurney grabbed the detective's attention for a moment. “You smell that?” Dean asked quietly. “Either the detective needs to change his diet or, uh...”
“Sulfur,” Sam nodded. “Len was killed by a demon.”
“Yeah, but why would a demon order a hit on a guy with no soul? It's like a Cracker Jack but not a prize.”
“Somebody cleaning up after Amara,” Liam suggested.
“Hands off, Deputy Doody!” a young woman cried before being led past them in cuffs.
“Who's the girl?” Sam asked the detective.
“Goldie Schmidtlapp. Was a normal kid, snapped this morning. Tried to kill her mom with a frying pan.” The brothers exchanged a knowing look. “First the ax murders, then Len, now this?”
“We're gonna need to talk to the kid.” Dean said.
As far as they could tell, Goldie was another one of Amara's victims. And if someone was cleaning up after her, she would be a target. A brief conversation with the girl confirmed that she had met Amara the night before. It took a little convincing to get Goldie to play along with their plan, but they set a trap for the next demon assassin; a devil's trap on the ceiling of the cell.
It didn't take long for a man dressed as a guard to come into the cell while they hid around the corner. Goldie played her part and lured him in by moving to the back of the cell. As they thought, the demon mentioned a mess the boss' daughter was making before trying to go after Goldie with a knife. When he couldn't, he looked up and realized he was trapped.
“Nice work, Goldie,” Sam said as they came out from their hiding spot.
“So, Crowley and Amara?” Dean wasn't that surprised. “Looks like you were right again,” he turned to Liam. “Remember, stun, don't kill.”
Liam rolled his eyes. “I'm injured, not stupid.” He put his hand on the demon's forehead and the demon was out instantly.
They took the demon back to their motel room and tied him to a chair. Dean started slapping him awake. “Rise and shine, buttercup.” The demon started coming around. “Now about what you were saying.”
“What's Crowley doing with Amara?” Sam asked.
“Don't know, don't care,” the demon didn't seem afraid. “Wouldn't tell you if I did.”
“Well, we already know she's growing up fast.”
“Yeah, well, demon souls, they do a body good. Little Muppet tore through half my buds before Crowley put her on a diet. She didn't like that. Started sneaking out to get her fill. You know how kids are. But daddy put his foot down.”
Dean put the knife to the demon's throat. “Where's he hiding her?”
The demon just laughed. “I'm happy to keep gossiping with you boys, but you want actionable intelligence? Torture me if you want. I know you'll just kill me anyway.”
Dean just shrugged. “Well, it looks like a stalemate to me. I guess we go ahead and kill him right now.”
“Dean, wait,” Sam stopped him. “We can exorcise him.”
“What?” Dean didn't believe what he was hearing.
“Save his meat suit.”
“I know you're into this whole save everyone you can kick, but...” Liam started from where he was seated on the bed.
“It's not a kick,” Sam insisted.
“In any case, do you know what demons do to those bodies?”
“My two cents,” the demon spoke up. “You exorcise me, let me smoke on out of here, I give you my word not to tell Crowley.” Dean scoffed at that. “Hey, you heard me. He's hardly my favorite guy at the moment. I-”
“Wait a second. Shut up.” Sam stepped forward and pulled back the demon's shirt to reveal a bullet wound. “There's no way his suit survived that wound.”
“I know you don't like it, but told you,” Liam was a little smug.
“Crap,” the demon mumbled just before Dean stabbed and killed him.
“Okay, I'll take care of the body,” Dean announced. “You two figure out what to do next.”
When Dean was gone Sam looked to Liam. “Well, what do you think? Because Dean and I, we've been chasing her the last few days, and...”
The blond thought about it a moment. “Well, she's only been doing her late night binges here in this town, right?”
“Far as I can tell, yeah.”
“Then she can't be far if she's been sneaking out. Can you map out where she's been?”
“Yeah, I can do that,” Sam opened his laptop and got to work. “Maybe I can even use the demon's phone to see where he's been to clean up.” Dean returned a little while later. “Where'd you ditch the body?”
“School playground,” Dean answered.
“Come on.”
“Hospital parking lot. What do you got?”
“Well, uh, good news. I was able to hack his phone. Got the coordinates of his call history.” Liam was marking a map on the wall. “I guess Crowley must've had him tailing Amara or something, because he was at all three spots. He was at the Lizzie Borden house, where Len got his soul taken, he was at the bar where Sydney got her soul taken, and he was there, where Goldie said Amara approached her.”
“So it stands to reason that she's being kept somewhere around here,” Liam motioned to the triangle the three sites made.
“Yeah, maybe,” Sam nodded. “But what I don't get is why would Crowley have Amara on earth in the first place? Wouldn't it be smarter to keep her in hell?”
“Yeah, but then he'd have to spend more time there, and he hates that place,” Dean pointed out.
“Oh, right. I keep forgetting about you and Crowley's summer of love.”
Dean ignored the comment from his brother and scanned the map. “I'm not seeing much inside this radius that he'd like better. I mean, you got farms, you got swamps. This POI, what's that?”
“Point of interest.”
Dean rolled his eyes. “I know what it... What is it?”
“Oh. Let's find out.” Sam did some typing on his laptop. “The Needham Asylum. Decommissioned in '63. Sound like Crowley's kind of place to you?”
“Yeah,” Dean nodded and started gathering up some stuff. “Liam, this isn't a crime scene, so please, do something not normal for you and stay here.”
“Uh, no,” the blond got to his feet. “Three going in gives us better odds than two. Besides, we're probably going up against demons, and I have gifts that you don't.”
“I know, and we've talked about that. I don't mind the small stuff so much, but...”
“Bigger stuff tires me out, yes, I know. Nobody knows what's going on with my body better than I do seeing as how I'm in it. Killing a few demons isn't anything I can't come back from with a nice nap.”
“I still don't want to take the chance, especially with you not one hundred percent back from getting shot. God damn it, you're stubborn. I only want what's best for you.”
“What's best for me is to go with you, not to sit on my ass and worry.”
“Guys, this arguing is getting old,” Sam interrupted. “Dean, when have you ever known him to give in? And maybe we could use his gifts, as long as you don't push yourself too far, okay?”
“Fine,” Liam gave in to the request. “I will try to hold back and take it easy, but I'm going.”
Sam started grabbing a few things as well. “So, we're really gonna do this. Now?”
“Hell yeah,” Dean nodded. “I've been looking for a chance to get back at Crowley ever since that crap he pulled in Cedar Rapids, especially now that I know he tricked me and made off with the Darkness.”
“No, that's not what I meant. We're going in to kill Amara. Are you ready for that?”
“Why wouldn't I be?”
“Because we don't know the first thing about her, Dean. We don't know her powers. We don't know how to take her down. Hell, you know what? We don't even know if she can be killed.”
“I know. But she's too big of a threat to wait. I say we go in there and we hit her with everything we got.”
They drove out to the abandoned asylum. When they got there they walked right through the gate and only saw an old creepy building. “No guards at the perimeter?” Dean found that a little odd.
“Looks like there are no guards at the door, either,” Sam noticed. “You think this is the right place still?”
“This isn't in the middle of a big city,” Liam pointed out while he kept looking for anything out of place. “A bunch of people walking around outside would draw attention.”
They reached the door and Dean looked everything over. “Well, warding sigils. And for the humans, look at this. A padlock you'd find on a middle school locker. Cocky son of a bitch.”
“Dean, external security may be lax, but we still don't know how many demons we're gonna face inside,” Sam was a little worried.
“Well, let's find out.” Dean started picking the lock.
“If the demon we caught was telling the truth, their numbers are a little thin,” Liam tried to be reassuring. “And you have me.”
“And you promised not to push it,” Dean reminded his partner as he tossed the lock aside.
“I know, but I still think I can be a force to be reckoned with.”
The halls were pretty well empty, except for a demon standing outside a door. They all agreed that was probably where Amra was being kept. Dean came up with the idea to lure the guard away from the door with an old voicemail Crowley had left him when he was a demon. It worked, and as the demon marched toward Dean, Sam came out of nowhere and tackled the demon. “Sam?” Dean was a little surprised to see Sam handcuffing the demon.
“You know what? Go,” Sam didn't want to explain himself. “Take her out. I got them.”
“I'll stay with him,” Liam motioned for Dean to go by himself. “She didn't hurt you when she was released. She'll let you get close.”
Not long after Dean went into the room two more demons charged them. Liam grabbed one by the throat and he screamed as he died. Sam fought with the other, trying to handcuff him as well. The demon hit him suddenly, and Sam fell back against the wall. “You of all people should know pacifism doesn't pay,” the demon smirked as he started choking Sam.
Liam moved to help, but another demon showed up and threw him into the wall. The blond got up and punched back before killing that one as well. When he turned to see how Sam was doing, he saw that Sam had just stabbed the demon on him with an angel blade. “Glad to see you got some sense in your head.” Then his head turned toward the closed door, and he moved a bit closer.
“What is it?” Sam asked.
“I don't know,” the blond had an odd look on his face. “I feel... It's almost like a siren song. My side doesn't even hurt right now.” He headed right for the door and tried to open it. When it wouldn't he raised his hand and blasted it open. His eyes narrowed angrily at the sight of Amara stroking Dean's jaw, and those eyes turned red. “You shouldn't touch what isn't yours.”
Amara turned toward him. “But he is mine, in a way.”
“He was mine first. And you...”
“You're angry about what happened while I was trapped. I'm angry as well. But I'm also curious. Are there others as powerful as you?”
“Would it scare you if there were?”
“It would confuse me. I've been studying my brother's creation. I saw you when I was freed, I felt your power trying to protect your friends. I think you are the queen on this chess board. The question is, what are you going to do?”
“That depends on you. You've been devouring souls, and I can't sit back and allow that to continue.”
“Don't!” Dean cried when Astiratu raised a hand.
Amara went flying back against the wall, but she got up and moved to strike back. A spark of electricity appeared between them, and it moved back and forth a little. Sam had come in, and both he and Dean watched as the two struggled against each other. The spark then slowly moved toward Amara and struck her. She cried out as she fell, but she didn't stay down long. Before anyone could react a brick from the ceiling fell and struck the half angel. He went down stunned. “I'm sure we'll see each other again,” Amara said as she walked out the door.
Dean rushed to his partner to see if he was okay. “Babe, you alive?”
Liam was himself again. “My head hurts, but yeah. I...”
“You what?” Dean was worried.
“I don't remember what happened after I came in here, but I get the feeling I did good.”
“You did,” Dean nodded as he helped his husband up. “You had me a little worried there, but as long as you're okay. Amara got away, but...” He noticed Liam's side was bleeding. “Damn it.”
“Nothing a bath and a nap won't fix,” Liam tried to keep Dean from worrying.
They headed back to the bunker to check on Castiel, and to see if he found out anything useful. It turned out he had found Metatron, and Amara was indeed God's sister. They sat in the library after Castiel had healed Liam, and they listened to his tale. Dean leaned with a hand on the table when the angel finished. “Look, guys, I'm as glad as anyone that Stella got her groove back, okay? But you let Metatron go?”
Castiel was a little annoyed by the question. “Dean, how many times are you gonna repeat that question?”
“I'm gonna say it again. You let Metatron go!”
“He's not going anywhere. If he makes a move, if he draws the slightest attention, the full force of angel kind will snuff him out. Look, neither of you saw him. He is a human, and a pitiable one at that. He's not a threat to us. I mean, I put him in traction.”
“Guys, bigger fish to fry here,” Sam changed the subject. “Amara is in the wind.”
“Yeah, God's freaking sister,” Dean shook his head in disbelief.
“You said you were close. Dean, how'd she get away?” Castiel asked.
“I'm sorry, what part of God's freaking sister did you not understand?” Dean snapped. Then he looked around to make sure Liam wasn't within hearing distance. “It was something though. Usually when he uses his power it takes a toll, but then... He got her, and then she used a cheap trick to stun him. Is he really the queen of the chess board?”
“It wouldn't surprise me,” Castiel answered. “Metatron said God feared she might get loose one day. Maybe he wasn't experimenting. Maybe he created a being who could fight back if he wasn't around. That could be why the body didn't give out. He was meant to fight her.”
Dean lowered himself into a seat. “This is all just nuts. Why couldn't I love a normal person?”
“Because normal is not what you needed,” Sam answered the question. “He's saved our necks a bunch of times. But most importantly of all, Dean, when you're with him, you're happy.”
“I am,” Dean couldn't argue. “And I'm afraid of him losing this fight.”
“He wasn't built to lose,” Castiel tried to be reassuring.
Dean took a calming breath. “I really hope you're right because I can't lose him.”
