CHAPTER 6 : FACING THE TRUTH
Sydney sat across the briefing room table from Vaughn and Weiss, with Nadia
beside her,
and did not speak. Her eyes had a glassy look to them as she stared off into
space, her
thoughts consumed with what she just learned.
'It isn't possible.' That was the first thought that ran through Sydney
Bristow's head. 'No
way is it possible.' She had stood, and screamed at Jason, her anger boiling
over as she
called him a liar in every language she knew. Vaughn and Weiss had finally had
to
intervene and pull her off of Jason, or else she might have actually hurt him.
It was the
first time Sydney had ever lost her cool with a suspect. She had not spoken
sicne that
moment, and now they just sat here.
Vaughn didn't know what to say to Sydney about what they had learned. He
remembered
her lost years, when he had almost died with her. He remembered that during
that time
her eggs were extracted by the Covenant. He remembered her need, her urgent
need, to
destroy any chance of bringing this child into the world. He remembered the
flames that
consumed all the Covenant's research- or so they thought. Now it appears they
had been
unsuccessful. And seeing what that fact was doing to the love of his life broke
his heart.
Nadia sat beside her sister, also speechless. She had not been involved during
the time
when Sydney had disappeared, but knowing her sister as she had over the time
they had
been working together and living together, she knew this is the last thing
Sydney would
want. She knew how Sydney felt about the prophecies of Rambaldi. She could see
on her
sister's face- this new information was ripping her to shreds inside.
Weiss wanted to be as far from htis room as possible, but considering that
Sydney was not
only a team member but also one of his closest friends, he sat by to offer his
support- in
whatever form she might need. He could also see Vaughn's face, and knew that
this truth
was also taking it's toll on him as well. Weiss was tempted to reach out, to
squeeze his
arm or something- anything- to show his support, but instead he sat, waiting for
someone to speak.
It was Sydney who finally broke the heavy silence. "No matter who he is," she
said softly,
her tone reflecting the pain in her heart as she tried to come up with a plan.
"We have to
protect him."
Vaughn nodded. "You're right," he said softly, daring to look into Sydney's eyes
and face
the sadness he found there. "We can sort everything else out later."
Sydney took a deep breath. "So, what do we know?"
Nadia opened a file in front of her and began to run down the facts she and
Weiss had
discovered once Jason had given them the name. "Jan Robert Oramu. 21 years
old. Lives
in London. There's no history on him before the age of 17," she said, searching
through
the file."
"I don't get it," said Sydney, puzzled. "The Covenant took my eggs almost four
years ago,
how can he be 21 years old?"
Vaughn sighed. "They must have genetically engineered a teenager. My guess is
whatever
role he plays in the prophecy, they weren't willing to wait for him to grow up."
Sydney
nodded. Somehow, that made perfect sense.
"So we go to London," said Sydney, verbally working out the plan with her fellow
APO
members- and the three people she most trusted in the world. "We pull him out,
get him
here. Then what?"
She looked around the room, but nobody seemed to have an answer. Sydney sighed
again. "I guess we'll cross that bridge when we get to it," she said, unable to
come up with
an exact plan for when they had finally gotten Jan Oramu back to LA. She
assumed getting
Jan would be easy.
She was wrong.
