'Papa Don't Preach' written by Brian Elliot and additional lyrics by Madonna
After what seemed like forever, a petite dark lady holding a thin manila chart walked in.
Walking over to Jennifer she bent over to hug her, then she reached over and touched Justin's surprised face gently.
Trailing a finger tip slowly down his jaw, she tapped his nose lightly as she said softly, "Ah, little sunbeam, you've grown into quite a beautiful young man my angel."
Ruefully she shook her small dark head as she looked over at the petite blonde lady sitting next to him and said, "Ah Jennifer, where does time go?"
Looking over at Daphne lying on the examination table, Jennifer Taylor felt a wave of nostalgia sweep over her as she remembered well her own excitement and curiosity about her first baby.
Smiling slightly, Jennifer shook her own head slowly as she softly replied, "I don't know Dr. Knep, I just don't know."
The little woman then grinned a smile to rival Justin's Sunshine grin as she scolded, "Julie, Jennifer! Call me Julie! You know I don't care much for the formalities dear!"
After that admission, Dr. Julie Knep noticed that the air in the small room became somewhat easier to breathe.
Walking over to the slightly trembling woman/child lying on the long slim pale pink paper covered platform table, she grinned again and said, "And Daphne J, Chanders, my little namesake, you've grown into a beautiful young woman as well."
Jennifer and Justin watched as Daphne knit her dark brows together and then smiled up at the smaller woman in wonder as she said, "The J. in my name stands for Julie, then? I was named after you? You delivered me too?"
The little woman let loose a hearty laugh and she smiled, as she lightly smoothed the soft cinnamon locks of the girls' thick curly hair away from her forehead as she said, "Jules is my first name, but I go by Julie. And yes, the 'J.' in your name, stands for mine, and yes, Daphne, I delivered you too."
Daphne smiled a large grin as she slowly relaxed.
Looking over at Justin and his mom, she realized for the first time in this whole mess that things were now looking up.
As she searched Dr. Julie Knep's expressive dark brown eyes she felt safe, not condemned.
And then it hit her.
This kind lady Dr. Not only delivered Justin, but herself as well, and now, she would be their baby's Doctor too!
'Talk about full circle!' She thought wryly.
A small knock on the door announced the arrival of the Technician who would be performing the ultra sound.
It was the young dark haired nurse that had settled Daphne in after she had seen them to the room earlier.
As she slowly lowered the black rail to position Daphne better for her examination, she looked over her shoulder and told the two Taylor’s, "Hi, I'm Cyndy. After I get Miss Chanders set up for her Ultra Sound, you may then come over here too, okay?"
Both mother and son nodded as they held hands tightly, their eagle eyes trained on the small slender girl on the table.
Noticing the slight rise in the nervous factor of the room, the Dr. walked back over to them and softly whispered,
"If you're not so tense, she won't be either, then, the examination will be better, and, you might even get to see the sex of the baby today, okay?" She said as she gently patted the arms of both mother and son.
Unclasping their sweaty hands, Jennifer opened her purse and pulled out a tissue for Justin and one for herself.
As she handed it to him, she gave him an apologetic smile as she wiped her hands saying, "Sorry honey, it's just, this is my first grandchild, and, I'm a bit, well, nervous."
Wiping away the moisture on his own hands, Justin smiled at his mother and said, "It's okay mom. Me and Daph, well, we really appreciate all that you have done for us and for our baby."
Hugging her first born close, Jennifer whispered into his ear, "I'd do anything for you, and for them sweetheart. Justin I love you so much! I love Daphne and the baby too! I just want the both of you to be happy honey. And, I'll do whatever it takes to see that you are! I may have let you down before, but this time, I swear to you Justin, I'll move heaven and earth to see that you, and Daphne and this baby get everything you need!"
Just then, they heard a funny *sploosh/splat* noise, and then they both heard Daphne giggle before she loudly complained, " HEY! Crap! That's cold!"
"Jennifer, Justin, please come over here, we're ready to begin." Called Julie.
Both Taylor’s tossed their used tissues into the small pink trash bin before making their way over to see the future that lie nestled inside of Justin's past.
As the technician moved the slender silver wand, she motioned up to the small screen above them with a slender fingertip as she expertly pointed the wand to different parts of the baby nestled inside of Daphne's slightly protruding tummy.
"From the length of the bones, I'd say this baby is in its 20th week of gestation, making it roughly five months since it's conception."
Giving them all a wide smile, she then said, "Did you know that the heart is one of the major organs that forms first? That's why frequent check ups and good pre-natal vitamins are so important."
Noticing now where their eyes were trained, she announced, "Here is the baby's heart. Look, you can see all 4 chambers!" she said, and they 'ohhhed' and 'awwed' as she carefully named off each of the tiny baby's body parts, then quickly typed some notes into the small key pad of the machine.
And, after setting down the wand onto a small pale pink paper covered tray, she flipped a switch.
Then carefully she positioned the slender belt like structure Velcro-buckled around Daphne's waist, and the entire room was bathed with very loud strong *SWISHSwoosh-SWISHSwoosh-SWISHSwoosh* sounds.
Looking at Daphne and Justin's surprised young faces she snickered then smiled brightly as she explained to them, "That's your baby's heartbeat. It sure sounds strong huh?"
Cyndy had to bite back her giggles as she flipped the switch off.
Sneaking a look or two at Dr. Julie's face, you'd of thought it was her grandchild and not the pretty blonde Mrs. Taylor’s, so in awe was the older woman.
"Now," Cyndy said, as she gently massaged the girl's small protruding mound just above the top her pelvic bone. "If the baby will cooperate, we'll get to see its sex!"
Daphne was beyond caring that the gown was pulled so high the bottom curves of her young breasts were exposed, and the sheet was now pulled down so low, a few of her brown pubic curls were peeking out as she too. Eagerly searched the small screen in hopes of finding out if she was carrying a boy, or a girl.
And, the young nurse's small expert hands on her belly felt nice too.
She just hoped that the baby would turn soon.
Judging from the tiny perfect little bubble butt, it was no question just who this babies father was, the only question now was, just what was the baby?
Although Daphne wanted a little girl, something deep inside her told her that she was looking at a little Justin Jr.
She felt the tears of joy well up, then slip slowly down her face.
Justin Taylor watched the small being on the screen and wondered, 'Was this what Brian had felt like all of those months ago, seeing an itty bitty Gus swimming inside of Lindsay's belly? Because nothing in parenting class in school, and no nothing he'd ever seen or heard of could have prepared him for this moment.
And that was when he felt his heart jerk and a small pain hit him hard when he realized that he couldn't call Brian and share this amazing fact with him.
The fact that he and Daphne were now parents too.
Just like Brian and Lindsay were.
But, unlike Brian, Justin wanted more than just being a weekend daddy.
No, he wanted it all, and, even if it meant never being with Brian again, he'd have it all.
Looking up at the innocent little life on the screen something hit him, hard.
This baby, his and Daphne's child would never know or feel the cruel words his own father had said.
No matter his or her future plans or actions, no matter if this baby became gay, bi or straight, Justin vowed right then and there to love it with all of his heart and mind and soul, and to protect his baby forever.
My God! That tinsy tiny little baby floating on that screen, inside of Daphne, that was his baby!
Their baby! They'd made this perfect little baby!'
He felt tears of awe and of joy slowly slide down his face.
He heard a tiny sniffle, and then looking down at her, he noticed the same on hers.
And, when Daphne reached her small hand up, Justin grasp it, threading their shaking fingers together.
Both teens were now mentally holding their breath, silently urging the new life they'd created to 'please turn over'.
Jennifer and Julie were now holding hands too; their eyes bright with unshed tears of joy and feeling as giddy as the two sniffling teens.
Cyndy smiled as she once again, tickled the girls brown belly skin lightly with her fingertips.
'Come on Tiger' She thought, 'Roll on over so your mommy and daddy will stop crying.'
Cyndy was certain that this baby was a little boy. She'd done enough Ultra Sounds to tell.
Slowly, the tiny baby yawned, stretched a little arm up, and then the other one.
Flexing its teensy feather-like fingers, looking over its shoulder, it seemed to grin, before it flipped, and showed them all just what it was.
Justin was red-faced but proud as Daphne, and his mother and Dr. Julie crowed, "Yep, it's a boy all right! And, you can sure tell that's Justin's son too!"
Daphne giggled as she said, "Look, he's kicking his itty bitty little feet too!"
All eyes were now on the baby boy who was now wiggling and kicking his tiny feet, making his not so little penis jump.
Justin who was now beat red as he too laughed, "Well, Daph, that right there shows he's your son too! What a little show off!" he giggled proudly.
Cyndy mentally patted herself on the back as she finished up her task.
Looking over at the proud young parents, she asked, "Would you like some pictures? I also have a copy of the examination for you to take home as well."
At the eager nods of the two teens and the older women, she snickered.
Jennifer was happy to of had Julie share this special moment with her, but, she couldn't help wishing it had of been her best friend, Daphne's mother, Judy Chanders instead.
Julie, sensing that something was wrong, asked, "Jennifer, is everything okay? Is Judy coming next time?"
Looking over at Daphne and Justin happily chatting with the tech, Jennifer motioned Julie to follow her to the door.
As both older women slipped outside, once the door snicked shut, Jennifer deeply sighed as she said, "No, Judy has no idea that Daphne is even pregnant! Jules, Daphne's terrified of what her parents would of done, or still would do, so, next to you, Justin, and 'Cyndy the Tech', I'm the only one who knows."
Looking down sheepishly at her Gucci pumps, Jennifer then looked into the warm eyes of her second best friend in the world as she quietly admitted, "Well, yesterday, when Justin had asked me to go with him today to help Daphne pick out her prom dress, I almost told Judy then. You know, about the fact that Daphne was pregnant. Instead, I gave her some song and dance about how I know how busy she was with her work and all, and that it would be an honor to shop with and to buy our girl her Prom dress! Jules, I have only ever lied to her one other time, but that was concerning a family matter, one of Craig's teen-situations, and, I was also very upset at that time, and I know, well, as much as I love you Jules, you and I both know, it should of been Judy here, seeing her first grandchild, and not just us and Justin! I just feel so guilty, Jules, so damn guilty."
Julie hugged her babbling younger long-time friend, patting her slim back as she trembled, before breaking down.
"Shh, It's okay Jen, you'll see, Judy will be so thrilled! I know she won't do anything rash."
Nodding, Jennifer smiled through her tears, as she dug into her purse for a tissue.
After wiping her face and daintily blowing her nose, she said, "I know Julie, I know, its not so much Judy I'm worried about. It's Ben."
Julie grimaced, remembering well the past harsh and bigoted attitude of Benjamin Chanders.
She didn't envy Jennifer or Judy one bit. And, she worried for little Daphne as well.
Justin soon joined his mother and Dr. Julie, explaining that Cyndy had kicked him out of the room so that Daphne could get dressed.
Inside the room, Cyndy was telling Daphne, "Now, that you are in the latter part of your second trimester, I'll need to see you in two weeks. Then every week after until the birth of your baby."
At the young girl's hesitant nod, Cyndy stressed, "I'm happy that you are now going to be getting the care you should have gotten earlier. Please Daphne, for a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby, do not miss your prenatal appointments from now on. Promise me?"
"Um, okay, sure."
This said, the young nurse handed the girl a small pale pink card.
"Now, here are a few numbers that will come in handy, and I even put my private cell number on it too. I know I'm not supposed to but Daphne, you remind me so much of someone."
"Who?"
With tear filled eyes, the young nurse softly replied, "Me
As soon as Daphne walked out the door, they all then went over to the receptionist desk.
Jennifer gave the young woman her medical insurance card, and her visa.
After one had been copied, and the other swiped through a slim black credit card machine, along with the receipts from the visit, the smiling receptionist handed Daphne a small pale pink folder.
Inside were several copies of the DVD of the baby and his print out pictures of the Ultra Sound safely placed inside a clear zippered pocket.
Tucked along with several pale pink sheets with black typed instructions for the new mother, and a general facts sheet about the changes she'd soon experience, and another sheet explaining some of the things she'd already had.
Jennifer and Justin were amazed at all of the questions and answers, but Daphne, she was just thankful.
She'd had to be careful at school, acting like her limited questions to her Personal Growth teacher, Mrs. Simms, were just some of the average teen-curious questions about growing up and someday, raising a family.
A pale blue medium sized thick plastic bag announcing, 'Welcome to Parenthood' decorated with white, brown, yellow, red, and black small blue jeans jumper covered playing teddy bears, tumbling, laughing and running and chasing colorful butterflies that's filled to the brim with different small samples and coupons for various baby items and for Daphne too, was next handed to her.
At her questioning glance, the receptionist winks and says, "Blue, for boy! Congratulations!"
Stapled to the top of the surprisingly heavy bag by the white silk drawstring is a pale pink card with black raised lettering naming the clinic, written on it with the date of Daphne's next appointment, two weeks from today, and the day of the prom.
After hugging Dr. Julie good bye, Jennifer, Daphne and Justin made their way outside to the car.
Once they were all inside and buckled in, Jennifer had to giggle at the happy noises coming from the back seat, as Daphne and Justin pored through the bags contents.
Looking at her watch, Jennifer swore silently. 'Damn, it was already 5:30.' She needed to get Daphne back to her car.
Happy that she had let Molly spend the weekend with a school friend Jennifer squared her shoulders as she let drop her bomb.
"Daphne honey, I know you don't want to, but, I really think you should tell them, sweetie, your parents, they have a right to know."
Silence filled the car.
Then, Jennifer heard small sniffling.
She watched in the rear-view mirror as Justin hugged Daphne close, whispering to her as they now had their heads so close together, it looked as if they were kissing.
But, she knew better.
It was a position she'd seen them in time and time before, since they were once but little toddler babies themselves.
When they had something to talk over, something serious only to them, they'd put their heads very close together to shut everyone else out.
The serious fierce dark stormy blue look flashing in Justin's normally happy eyes when they met hers in the mirror made Jennifer catch her breath as she heard him quietly, yet firmly say, "Fine mom. She'll tell them, today. But, she won't be alone when she does. I'll be there right by her side. He's my baby too. And, your grandchild. Will you be there with us when they find out then?"
Putting the key into the ignition and turning the car on, Jennifer slid the car into reverse, then into drive as she left the parking lot of the clinic, to merge into the early evening traffic.
Taking a deep breath, she said, "Yes, honey, I'll be there right by your and Daphne's side, no matter what the outcome is."
Twisting the stereo knob on, she tapped out stations with her fingertip, as she searched for something they could all agree on.
After two snickered, "You've GOT to be kidding" and one loud snort, she happened upon a station playing oldies from the eighties and nineties.
And, when the car soon became filled with the catchy beat and sultry yet firm tones of Madonna as she told her sad tale in a song, even the music critics in the backseat listened carefully to every word as she sang,
'Papa, I know you're going to be upset
Cause I was always your little girl
But you should know by now,
I'm not a baby...
You always taught me right from wrong
I need your help, daddy please be strong
I may be young at heart
But I know what I'm saying...
The one you warned me all about
The one you said I could do without
We're in an awful mess, and I don't mean maybe-please
Papa don't preach, I'm in trouble deep
Papa don't preach, I've been losing sleep
But I made up my mind, I'm keeping my baby, oh
I'm gonna keep my baby, mmm...
He says that he's going to marry me
We can raise a little family
Maybe we'll be all right
It's a sacrifice
But my friends keep telling me to give it up
Saying I'm too young, I ought to live it up
What I need right now is some good advice, please
Papa don't preach, I'm in trouble deep
Papa don't preach, I've been losing sleep
But I made up my mind, I'm keeping my baby, oh
I'm gonna keep my baby, mmm...
Daddy, daddy if you could only see
Just how good he's been treating me
You'd give us your blessing right now
'Cause we are in love, we are in love, so please
Papa don't preach, I'm in trouble deep,
Papa don't preach, I've been losing sleep
But I made up my mind, I'm keeping my baby, oh
I'm gonna keep my baby, mmm...
Papa don't preach, I'm in trouble deep,
Papa don't preach, I've been losing sleep
Papa don't preach, I'm in trouble deep,
Papa don't preach, I've been losing sleep
Oh, I'm gonna keep my baby ooh
Don't you stop loving me daddy
I know, I'm keeping my baby
As Jennifer shut off the haunting, yet prophetic song, soon the car was filled with soft sounds of sniffles, a couple of tummy growls, and then some muffled giggles.
As she drove toward the golden arches, Jennifer asked, "I know it's close to suppertime, but, why don't we go inside this time and get a little something to tide you both over with, okay?"
Watching the two heads bob, she smiled as she wheeled the car into the restaurants parking place.
Once they had ordered, and then had set down, she dropped her hopefully last bomb.
Justin's blue eyes were as wide as Daphne's honey-hazel ones and they both were in shock as she repeated,
"If Daphne's father reacts the way I'm pretty sure he will, I just wanted you both to know, that I have a back up plan. And, it's on a need to know basis, okay?"
Once they had finished their small snacks of hot apple pies and mixed ice cream sundaes in a dish, they all got up to throw their trash away, then to use the facilities before climbing back into the car.
As the familiar parking lot of St. James came to view, Jennifer felt her gut tighten.
Daphne and Justin had decided that he should drive her car to her home.
Jennifer and Daphne would follow him in Jennifer's car.
Madonna's haunting song was looping through all three of their minds, but with different meanings, as the Chanders home came to view.
Justin parked Daphne's car, locked it then stood beside it as he waited while his mother parked hers along side Mr. Chanders dark hunter green Jaguar.
Judy Chanders burst out of the front door, as she babbled, "Daphne, sweetie! Let me see it!"
Noticing her daughter's nervous smile and her lack of several packages, she asked with a puzzled frown on her pretty brown face, "Honey, I thought you told me you were going prom dress shopping with Jennifer and Justin? Daphne, where is your prom dress?"
And, then her gaze fell to what her daughter was carrying.
The fat little familiar tote with its multi-racial dancing teddy bears.
Well, of course it was familiar, as she had designed it as a favor to a friend.
An older friend who had just opened up her new OB/GYN Clinic.
It had been Judy's first big account in her new graphic design business.
All three girls had it all planned out.
Their futures.
She was going to become a very successful design artist, with her ad prints all over the world!
Jennifer was going to become the most successful Real Estate agent ever! She'd even vowed to move to Hollywood one day, and sell homes to the stars!
And, Jules, who was two years older than the two starry eyed College Sophomores, had just smiled, and said she,
"Was going to have her own OB/GYN Clinic one day, and make the world a better place by offering good pre-natal care, and being the best damn baby Dr. she could be!"
Jules and Jennifer, had been delighted in Judy's genius to make it a pink back ground, for girls and a blue back ground for boys...
They had gone through several bottles of wine, the night she'd announced that seven more hospitals had adored her new design and were replacing their current boring design with her new adorable teddy bear one!
She and Jennifer had been momentarily jealous of each other, when at the hospital Judy had been given pink, and then a few months later, Jennifer blue, eighteen years ago...
As she noted the color of the bag her daughter was holding, Judy Chanders felt her reality tip, and the words,
'Be careful what you wish for.' Looped in her mind.
Her small hands flew to her trembling mouth, as she cried, “No Oh god, no!"
.
"Daffy-girl!" Boomed a loud voice from the front of the house, "Get on in here and show daddy just what that pretty prom dress looks like girl!"
Daphne looked first to Justin, then to Jennifer, then to her mother as they all mouthed, "OH SHIT!"
"Momma, I'm sorry you had to find out like this," She whispered loudly, moving to hug her mother's slender frame.
Judy glared at Jennifer over Daphne's slim shoulder as she spat, "I'm sure YOU knew all about this huh?"
Jennifer was taken aback by the anger in her best friend's normally sweet voice.
But, before she could open her mouth to retort, Justin said, "Mrs. Chanders, I asked her, no, I begged her NOT to tell you, or anyone else, so please, if you need to be angry, be so at me, not my mother."
Judy let out a small wail as she embraced her best friend.
"Oh, god, Jen," She whispered into the woman's soft blonde hair, "What are we gonna tell Ben? He is gonna lose his fool mind girl!"
The minutes stretched, and the ticking of the old-timed Cuckoo clock were the only sounds as Daphne, Justin, Jennifer and Judy sat on the large white leather couch, barely breathing as they were looking at Ben Chanders, and waiting for, something?
Some sign, anything to show he was still mentally in the room with them.
But, Ben Chanders mind was elsewhere.
Inside his memories, he saw the pretty nurse showing him how to cut the umbilical cord, then with tears falling down his face, after she was cleaned up, weighed, and pronounced a perfect 9 apgar score, Ben handed the bright eyed, wriggling soft pink bundle to his wife, Judy.
The new proud parents named her Daphne J. Chanders.
Daphne after Judy's favorite flower the daffodil, and J. after her first client and older college chum and now her OB/GYN Dr. Jules Knep.
Moments, minutes, and days fly by, and then Ben hears his name.
Justin, Justin Craig Taylor.
A name his little girl says clearer and more happily than, mommy or daddy.
And, Ben knows he shouldn't be jealous of a toddler! It's silly really to be jealous of a little baby the same age as his Daphne, but, he is, and he grows to hate that name.
Justin. JUSTINJUSTINJUSTIN...
Just as he soon hates the fact that even with his limited time he has to spend with her, all she seems to want to talk about is, him...Justin.
How smart he is, how pretty, how much fun they have, all of the neat secrets that they share.
And, Ben is even more ashamed to admit it, but he is SO damn jealous! And, she is right.
Justin Taylor is a very intelligent little boy.
The kid is like a walking Encyclopedia! A pint sized walking, talking Thesaurus for craps sake!
He is always so damn polite. Nothing at all like other little boys his age, no, Justin is much more mature.
Hell he's light years ahead of the other little boys his age.
And as much as Ben wants to hate him, he finds, through the years, he just can't.
With his sweet disposition, his sparkling bright blue eyes, and his sunny little grin, Ben soon finds himself just as enamored with the beautiful little blonde boy as does his daughter, and his wife.
And, Justin Taylor's challenging attitude, brings out the best in his little girl, making her want more, and to become the best, even better at whatever she does!
So, he finds himself buying art supplies because, "Justin loves drawing the butterflies in the garden daddy!"
And, he finds himself signing checks to a fancy private school just because, "BUT daddy! Justin is going there, so I want to go there too!"
And, through the years, he sees the pretty little blonde boy more than he cares to at his home, splashing in his pool with his daughter, at his dinner table, and fuck all the boy even back then ate like a lumberjack! Hell, Ben had even allowed Justin into his daughter's bedroom!
Who'd ever heard of a boy and girl slumber party?
But, no matter how many times he did a surprise check, there they were, giggling, and playing.
Hell sometimes they even were playing dress up!
But, at night, or god forbid when they had finally fallen asleep, he'd peek in, and all's he'd see were two best friends curled up like kittens in the same sleeping bag.
As their elementary years slipped away, and they arrived a little into their early teens, he starts to worry.
He'd caught them playing house as toddlers, and damn, but that was cute! Daphne was as bossy as her mother!
He'd caught them 'kiss-exploring' as Justin had so honestly explained to him, when he'd caught them in the garden, several times.
But, his biggest fear was soon haunting him.
'Will they do it? Will they actually have sex?'
He'd hoped that Daphne knew by now, his views on tainted blood.
Justin Taylor was white, not black.
And that would never change.
No matter how damn smart the boy was, he couldn't become black.
But, had he been black, Ben would have been SO proud to have the boy as a future son-in-law.
And, so, he'd let his young teen daughter know that with no holds barred, he wouldn't tolerate a mixed baby.
And, when the kids hit their mid-teens, he's not ashamed to admit that he had to restrain himself from doing cartwheels on his front lawn when an embarrassed Daphne and red-faced Justin told him, "Daddy, Mr. Chanders sir, I'm, Justin's gay." At the same time, and in stereo no less.
And, earlier this year, he'd even helped to keep the boy's latest secret, the fact that he'd become lovers with a gay man.
A man 12 years older than the boy, a wealthy Ad executive named Brian Kinney.
Yeah, Ben had helped to keep that bomb from Justin's homophobe father, Craig Taylor.
He'd stumbled on this little tidbit quite by accident when Daphne and Justin had been out after her curfew, sitting in the car, smoking with the windows down and arguing loudly.
Taylor was known throughout their Country Club sect as a violent hot head, and Ben didn't want to see the little boy used as a punching bag, should his father ever find out his son's true sexual orientation.
So, he'd calmed them both down, grounded his daughter, and gleefully had sent Justin home.
Ecstatic in the knowledge that the boy could NOW never take her completely away.
Because in Ben's book, a gay boy didn't have sex with a girl, no matter her color. Just as a straight girl, would never, ever have sex with a gay boy.
Or, so he'd thought.
Because, after what Justin Taylor had just said to him, Ben felt like a guest in the Twilight Zone, and he'd expected to see Rod Sterling step out from behind any door, at any second, announcing just that fact!
Damn, even now at his age, the stupid spooky song still gave him the chills!
And the fuckin' thing just would NOT stop looping through his sore brain.
'Do, Do, Do, Do, Do, Do, Do, Do...'
Ben closed his eyes tightly against the tears that wanted to fall. Later, in the privacy of his den, they would.
Hoping upon hope that when he opened his eyes, he'd be alone. That this was just a bad dream.
But, when he opened his eyes, his blurry vision saw them still sitting there.
Worried looks on their faces.
Well, he was still the man of his household, and as the man, a few ground rules needed to be laid in light of this oh, so interesting turn of things.
But, first, he really needed some clarification on a few facts.
Did Justin really just say, what he thought he said?
Clearing his throat suddenly, and feeling a bit of get-back when they all jumped, Ben trained his dark eyes on the blonde, blue-eyed bane of his existence as he silkily said, "Now, Justin, son, would you kindly run that by me one more time? Because, I may be getting old, but I could of sworn, that you just said to me, that my Daffy-girl here is 5 months pregnant, and that you're the father, and that I'm soon going to be the grandfather of a baby boy? Oh, and that you'd already asked her to marry you, and she told you she'd give you an answer on Prom night? Did I get all of that, or did I miss something here?"
And, then, the look in Justin Taylor's eyes gave him chills.
Now, he'd seen the boy's eyes alight with mischievousness, when he or Daphne had been up to no good.
And he'd seen them sparkle in glee, when Daphne or Justin had gotten an award, or had made an above average grade in School, hell, Ben had even seen those baby ocean blue eyes sad and solemn when he'd caught the two burying Daphne's pet hamster, Mr. Snuffles.
And it had broken his heart, but he'd patiently explained to the then 4-year-old, that it had been Mr. Snuffle’s time.
And, in an understanding way beyond his young years, Justin had been the one to comfort both him and Daphne, with his little blue eyes so sad. Damn! Ben had loved that little fur-ball too!
But, in all the different ways Ben had ever seen Justin's sapphire blue eyes, not even when he'd recently been dumped by that asshole Brian Kinney, had Ben seen the boy's beautiful eyes so, damn serious.
"Yes sir, Mr. Chanders, you heard me just fine, sir. Daphne is indeed pregnant with MY baby."
"But, but," Sputtered the older man, "You BOTH told me, not too long ago I might add, that you were GAY! Hell, you even had a gay boyfriend! How in the HELL did a gay boy get my STRAIGHT daughter knocked up?"
Looking at the children's mothers, he ran a hand through his thick dark hair, as he awaited some sort of an explanation.
But, Justin and Daphne felt that their mothers had enough on their plates, so they decided to answer him, in their normal fashion.
And, while it was cute when they were little, it was a bit over whelming right now when they chorused, "Well, she'd wanted, I'd wanted, to know. To see, what it was like, what it felt like, to have sex, to um, do it, so, well, and, I was scared it would hurt, so she wanted me to be her first, cause she said,"
Ben felt his head get dizzy as he held up his hands, "Please kids, one at a time." he begged.
Daphne looked at Justin, who looked back at her.
Then, they put their heads together.
Soon, Justin, with his hands clutched into Daphne's, and his sapphire blue eyes darker and very serious said, "Mr. Chander's sir, with all due respect, the reason why really is no ones business but Daphne's and mine. The condom, we think, broke. But, regardless, the facts will still remain the same, no matter how many times we hash this out. Sir, Daphne is now 5 months pregnant, and due in September. The baby boy is mine. I have asked for your daughter's hand in marriage. She has told me and even my mother too, that on Prom night, she would give me her answer.
I feel this is fair. But, and mark my words sir, no matter what her answer is, I shall have a full-time and active role in MY son's life and in his welfare. I will do anything for him, and I do mean, anything!"
Ben carefully watched the boy, no young man, sitting before him.
Everyone in this room, including Justin knew he was gay.
And, Ben couldn't help but admire the gutsy way the little shit had just stood up for Daphne, and for their unborn son.
'Holy crap! He was going to soon be a granddad!' The idea made him happy and sad.
But, he had to know for a fact, and without a shadow of a doubt, that Justin would do right by his baby girl.
So, he decided to slam home some hard facts, and truths to the four sitting oh so smugly on his couch.
"I see that you're very passionate about this whole situation Justin, and, I must say, I even admire you in your desire to do what's best for my daughter, and your son. As both of you will soon find out, parenting isn't for the weak minded, nor chicken-hearted. And, while I do want what's best for my daughter, I can't help but wonder Justin,"
Ben said as he leaned back in his white leather chair, hands behind his head, "Just how do you plan on supporting not only Daphne, and in the custom she's become used to, but a tiny newborn baby as well? Babies are very expensive. They cost you money from the moment you bring them home! Now, from what I understand son and I'm not trying to be cruel here, but, your own father has disowned you has he not, for your openly gay lifestyle? And, I know Daphne and you are both working too, but Justin, can you honestly tell me, that you could take care of them on a waiter’s tips and wages, alone? Because, in a few months, I'm sure her Dr. won’t want our girl on her feet too much."
Going in for the kill, saying the one thing he was sure would change the young man's stubborn mind, Ben then leaned foreword, ignoring the gasps around him as he slowly said, "Besides, since you were an itty bitty boy, you'd always wanted to be an artist. A famous artist. Tell me Justin, how can you possibly now afford to go to 4 years of College for your dream, and take care of a wife and raise a baby too? Have you even thought about that? Oh, and speaking of dreams, what about Daphne's dreams, huh? Since she was 3 years old she's wanted to be a Doctor, Justin, and you know this! How can you sit there and tell me, that you can make her dream come true now?"
'Ah HA!' Ben thought smugly as he now sat back in his comfortable leather chair, and waited for the boy's answer.
Looking around him, he was proud of all that he and Judy had so far accomplished in their young lives.
Seeing both of their College degree's hanging on the wall, along with their many awards, he was content with what they had.
And, when Daphne had come along, they had both been in the prime of their careers, and more than ready for their new addition.
Both he and Judy had taken much pleasure in spoiling her rotten too.
And, why not?
They could afford it.
But, Justin and Daphne, if they continued in this folly, would soon learn the hard way; they would barely be able to afford diapers.
Shuddering at the mere thought of his intelligent, talented and beautiful spoiled daughter living in some small, run-down crap apartment. Standing in a worn dress and pleading with a drunken sleazy landlord that they'd make rent soon. As her pretty little snot-nosed white-skinned skinny blonde haired, blue-eyed replica of Justin Taylor was running around the bare filthy floor in a half-assed dirty diaper, crying because he was hungry, just quickly made up Ben's mind for him.
"Now, all ya’ll, listen up, and listen up but good!" Ben's loud voice boomed.
"Yes, Daphne J. Chanders, you're going to have this baby. He will be put up for adoption right after his birth, and that's the end of it! Period! You know girl how I feel about mixing the races! So, adoption is the right thing to do, no matter how you both feel about it! Think girl, think about how that baby's gonna feel a few years from now, when he starts school? Kids are cruel honey. Can you honestly sit there, and tell me, that you had it so easy too? Girl, I can't help that my own momma was white and my daddy black. But Daffy girl, you are beautiful honey, and I wouldn't lie to you. I'm sure yours and Justin's baby will be too, but damn girl! It was so hard for me, having to always prove myself to BOTH sides, that I was good enough! Can you both tell me, you don't want better for your own child? So, I repeat, yes, you are having this baby, but you're not keeping it!"
And then Ben Chanders got up, and made his way downstairs to his den on shaky legs.
As he closed the door, his harsh sobs broke the silence.
Back upstairs Jennifer Taylor said, "Well, that went better than I thought it would."
At everyone's confused and horrified stare she smiled, looking first at Daphne, then at Justin and said, "Now, remember what I'd told you when we had our snack earlier? Oh, and speaking of snacks," She said as she pulled out 3 twenty's and handed them to a shocked Judy Chander's, Order us something please, I'm starved!"
Looking at the hungry faces of her two resident caterpillars she giggled, "Kids, any ideas what we should order?"
"PIZZA!" They crowed.
"Judy?"
"Uh, sure Jen, pizza will be just fine, I'll go order it, but, I'm not all that hungry though after Ben's tirade but, what style would you and the kids like? I might eat a slice or two later, and I'll save some for Ben."
"Extra-large Garbage pail with extra cheese and cheese bread and hot wings!" They chorused.
"We could split a small Hawaiian, Judy?"
"Okay then, I'll go order it, I'll be right back. Would anyone care for something to drink now?"
"Lemonade!" Daphne and Justin sang.
"I'd love some of your sweet tea, hun." Gushed Jennifer.
Judy Chander's smiled and then slowly walked away into the comfort of her stylish kitchen on someone else’s legs, because she was not quite sure she was really present, due to the surreality of the last hour, as broken thoughts swirled in her head.
'Her eighteen year old daughter was 5 months pregnant!'
'Her best friend had known this before her.'
'The boy responsible for getting her daughter in the family way is not only her best friend's son, but he has been her daughter's best friend since toddlerhood.
'THE BOY IN QUESTION IS GAY!'
'She and Ben were going to be grandparents!'
'Ben has just demanded the baby be put up for adoption!'
'Oh god!'
Judy's legs buckled and her slim shoulders shook as she quickly sat down in a chair at her pristine white kitchen table, and laid her head down on her slender arms, and cried.
What felt like hours, was in reality only minutes, when she noticed Jennifer had sat down next to her.
She was holding in her hand a pale pink folder.
"Here," she said, handing Judy a tissue and the folder.
"Why don't you and Ben meet your grandson. I'll bet you didn't order the food yet huh?"
At Judy's sheepish nod, Jennifer smiled, got up and placed the order.
Then, Judy smiled a watery smile back, and got up and began getting their drinks.
And when the old antique Cuckoo clock made the time known, they burst out in giggles.
"Cuckoo!"
"Cuckoo!"
"Cuckoo!"
"Cuckoo!"
"Cuckoo!"
"Cuckoo!"
"Cuckoo!"
Jennifer looked over at Judy with an arched eyebrow as she said, "I still say, she bought you that damn thing to slowly drive you crazy."
Flippantly Judy grinned and said over her shoulder, "And, I still say, my mother-in-law loves me, and she would never do such a thing!"
"Uh, huh, riiight. Denial is a fun place Judes." Jennifer teased right back, happy to see her friend smile.
Tucking the pink folder carefully up under her arm, she grabbed two drinks off of the tray sitting on the counter.
Winking at Jennifer, she said, "You let me handle gramps, I left your money for the pizza on the counter."
