Just to Hear You
Pt. 6
Nick and Brass coordinated their efforts to get Sara and
Grissom alone together before the party. Brass dropped Grissom off at Chicago
Joe’s shortly after 6, and then went to kill some time until the party. As he
watched Grissom enter the restaurant, Brass thought his friend looked more like
a man on his way to his execution rather than to talk to a woman.Grissom saw her sitting at the bar waiting for him. The
place was practically empty and the soft lighting accented the waves in her
hair. A simple ivory camisole top and black jeans never looked so good on
anyone. Of course this wasn’t just anyone; this was Sara. He walked over to
the bar and leaned against it beside her. “Hi there. I wasn’t sure if you’d
actually come tonight.” Sara smiled at him. “Well I had Brass and Nick calling
me all afternoon making sure I was coming. Well that and I couldn’t pass up a
chance to see you actually out in public, without being at a crime scene.”
Grissom chuckled. “Yeah that hasn’t happened very often, has it?” The
bartender came over and Grissom ordered bourbon on the rocks for himself and
whatever Sara was drinking. “Club soda. I’m driving tonight.” Grissom
smiled. “Well I’m not. Apparently Brass, Nick and Warrick are conspiring to
get me drunk tonight.”They sat for a moment, and then Sara decided it was time.
“Look Grissom. I know lately I’ve been a class A bitch to you. You didn’t
deserve that, and I’m sorry.” “You weren’t a bitch, Sara. Confusing and
frustrating, sure. But not a bitch. And if it’s any comfort, now I know how
you’ve felt for the past five years. I’d tell you something and then pull
away. And I’m sorry for that.”Sara took a deep breath. “About what I told you. Just
what did you hear?” Grissom sat his drink down and looked at her.
“Everything. I had been hearing bits and pieces of things for a while. But
when you were reading articles to me I could hear you clearly for the first
time. Then you put in a CD wondering what Nick had on there. I heard
everything you said, Sara.”“That’s what I was afraid of. God this is
embarrassing.”“Embarrassing? Is that why you’ve been avoiding me?”
“Partly.”
“My aren’t you just a fountain of information this evening Miss
Sidle.”Sara chuckled. “Well I learned from the master of evasive.”
“Seriously though. I’ve been avoiding you just so we
wouldn’t have to talk. I thought that if we did, I wouldn’t be able to work
with you anymore. But it seems you found a solution to that.”“Why wouldn’t you be able to work with me, Sara?”
“Because
it’s one thing to work with you after being turned down for dinner. It’s
another to try and work with someone after you’ve made a complete fool of
yourself.”Grissom turned and took her hand. “You didn’t do anything
like that. I’m glad I heard you. I wondered just how serious your feelings for
me were, but you cleared that up for me in the hospital.”“Sara do you know why I turned you down for dinner that
day? What you didn’t know was I was losing my hearing. Those times when
someone would be talking and I was ‘thinking’? The truth is I couldn’t hear
you. The day you asked me out I was on my way to speak with my doctor about
having the corrective surgery. I was distracted and didn’t say what I meant at
the time. You know I even thought about calling you and asking you out
after I got home. But then I walked into my home office and saw this.”Grissom took a paper out of his pocket and laid it on the
bar in front of her. “Grissom this is a copy of the departmental policy
manual.” “I know. Specifically it’s the section pertaining to interoffice
personal relationships. I kept a copy of it posted in my home office and had a
few in different locations at the lab. I needed frequent reminders on what it
said. That’s why I treated you so badly. Well at least a good part of why
anyway.”Sara looked at the paper before her and then to Grissom’s
eyes. “Ok now I’m really confused.”“I’m not doing this very well. This
policy prohibits any form of interoffice relationships between supervisors and
subordinates. It’s very cut and dry. Violating it gets you fired, noted in
your record, and effectively ends your career. So even if you hadn’t asked me
out to dinner when I was preoccupied with my hearing, I still would have had to
turn you down. But I never wanted to. There was nothing I wanted more than to
have dinner with you. Not just dinner with the team, just you. Alone. But I
couldn’t have that, no matter how much I wanted it.”Sara looked surprised. “You wanted to have dinner with
me?”Grissom nodded. “Not just dinner Sara. I wanted to be with you. Dinner,
movies, curled up on the couch reading, watching the sunshine on your hair,
seeing the sparkle in your eyes. Sara I wanted it all. But I knew that would
end your career and I couldn’t do that to you.”Grissom finished his drink and took her face in his hands.
“Sara when I was in the hospital, you told me you loved me. You said you wanted
to share my life with me. Honey that’s all I’ve wanted, but I never dreamed it
could happen. I never considered that your feelings were that strong. I’m an
old man Sara. Why would a beautiful young woman who could have any man she
wanted be interested in me? But there you were holding my hand in the hospital
telling me all the things I had only dreamed about. I’m in love with you Sara.
I have been for years. But there was always something stopping me from telling
you. For the last five years it’s been department policy that stopped me.
Before that, it was just my own fear.”“Almost dying gave me a new outlook. I’m not afraid of
what I feel for you anymore, and I am so sick of wasting time. I love you Sara,
more than anything else. I want to be with you. I want to hold you. I want you
know all the little things that make you so incredible.”Sara thought this was a dream. She never expected Grissom
to open up about anything, let alone say the things she only heard in her
fantasies. She really thought it was a dream when she felt him caress her hair.
She sat there waiting for him to do something. Anything. Instead he removed
his hands and ordered another drink. “Typical Grissom. Say something so
revealing and pull away again.” Grissom grinned. “Not exactly. But everyone
is expecting me to be here tonight for this party. If I kiss you right now, I’d
be lost. I wouldn’t be able to stop with just a kiss.” Sara gave him a wicked
grin. “Oh confident are you?” “With you, never. Let’s just say I’m
optimistic.”“So Grissom. What now?” “Well I think we should head over
to the party. The rest of the team came in a while ago, and Greg keeps poking
his head around the door checking on us.” Sara laughed. “He’s probably making
sure you’re not skipping out on your own party.” “Well considering our history
he’s probably checking to make sure we haven’t killed each other.”The party was a big success. Everyone was shocked at how
relaxed Grissom was. He was laughing, joking, he was actually having fun.
Nick, Warrick, and Greg had conspired together and made a pact to make sure
Grissom got good and drunk. They had a bet going as to what kind of drunk
Grissom was, and they had an ulterior motive. Everyone in the lab knew Griss
was attracted to Sara, and now the guys were hoping that if they got him drunk
enough, that he would finally make a move.Several hours later Grissom was indeed well on his way to
being hammered, but he wasn’t nearly as drunk as he let the boys believe he
was. Catherine and Brass knew Grissom had a high tolerance to alcohol and that
he was having fun with the boys; and they were enjoying the show too much to
call him on it. Grissom knew what the guys were hoping to see, and after his
conversation with Sara he saw no reason to disappoint them. He heard the
opening strains of Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer” and took that as his cue to walk
over to Sara and ask her to dance. She stared at him for a moment and let him
lead her to the dance floor. All eyes were on them as Grissom took her in his
arms and they danced. Nick was about to give up hope that things would work out
for Sara when the song changed. Everyone noticed the shift when Sara melted
into Grissom’s chest and he held her close. The new song just seemed to
describe the two of them perfectly.
For
all those times you stood by me
For all the truth that you made me see
For all the joy you brought to my life
For all the wrong that you made right
For every dream you made come true
For all the love I found in you
I'll be forever thankful baby
You're the one who held me up
Never let me fall
You're the one who saw me through it all
You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn't speak
You were my eyes when I couldn't see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn't reach
You gave me faith 'coz you believed
I'm everything I am
Because you loved me
You gave me wings and made me fly
You touched my hand I could touch the sky
I lost my faith, you gave it back to me
You said no star was out of reach
You stood by me and I stood tall
I had your love I had it all
I'm grateful for each day you gave me
Maybe I don't know that much
But I know this much is true
I was blessed because I was loved by you
You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn't speak
You were my eyes when I couldn't see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn't reach
You gave me faith 'coz you believed
I'm everything I am
Because you loved me
You were always there for me
The tender wind that carried me
A light in the dark shining your love into my life
You've been my inspiration
Through the lies you were the truth
My world is a better place because of you
You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn't speak
You were my eyes when I couldn't see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn't reach
You gave me faith 'coz you believed
I'm everything I am
Because you loved me
You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn't speak
You were my eyes when I couldn't see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn't reach
You gave me faith 'coz you believed
I'm everything I am
Because you loved me
I'm everything I am
Because you loved me.When the song ended Sara lifted her head from his shoulder
and looked into his eyes. For the first time she saw all the love she felt for
him echoed in the azure pools. She pulled herself away before she was
completely lost in him right there on the dance floor. That was when they
noticed that, while they were dancing, everyone in their party had left. Sara
smiled, “Well I guess they figured I could make sure you got home since they got
you drunk.” Grissom laughed. “Probably. But I’m not as drunk as they think.
There is no way I could drive though, even if my car was here.”“That’s all right. I’ll take you home.”
Grissom squeezed her hand. “Good. Then we can talk some
more.”“About what?”
“Well Sara. I finally figured it out.”
“Figured what out?”
“What to do about ‘this’”
