Rose could
scarcely breathe. The entrance hall, as
Rini had described it in whispered tones, seemed to her more like a massive,
empty city. The walls soared skyward,
blue and green stone with carvings so life-like that Rose was hard put not to
touch them. The stone was thinner the
higher the walls reached, allowing natural light to filter through and dapple
them in sea-colors, splashing across a floor made of sparkling purple material
that Rose thought looked like amethyst. “Where
are we?” she asked quietly. Next to
her, a dark-skinned female with startling green eyes shifted and turned a
baleful glare her direction.
“We do not
speak until ordered!” she whispered harshly.
“SHHHH!”
Rose
frowned, twitching her gown at her hips. It hung too loosely, making her feel
oddly exposed despite the volume of material swathing her form. The entire walk had been silent, the others
in the group seeming to understand just what was going on. A few were crying but not outright sobbing
and none of them seemed to be confused or overtly panicked. With a subtle sigh, she turned her attention
to the female on her other side. “What
are we doing in here anyway? When can we
leave?”
“SILENCE!”
Rose
cringed as the voice rolled across the assembly, seemingly shaking the fine
stone walls. No one else flinched but her. Damn it…
“Sorry,” she muttered, ducking her head and looking down at her
skirts. A soft, whispering sound drew
her gaze upwards after a moment, though, and she found herself staring into
Nova’s hard glare. “Sorry,” she
repeated. “I just… no one is telling me
anything and I want to leave! I
have to leave!”
“You are
first.” Nova’s strong fingers wrapped
around her elbows and pulled Rose from the group. The females around them parted like the Red
Sea, allowing the tall, shaven-headed woman to bring Rose forward
and into the wide, empty expanse of the room before them. “Your insolence in the face of The Lady has
amused her,” Nova said with the barest hint of humor in her voice. “You are to be the first.”
“The first
what?” Rose demanded, wrenching free of Nova’s grasp. “Look, I don’t know how you do things on
Babylon Five or whatever, but where I’m from, this is kidnapping! I’m hit over
me head, I wake up all sick and lost, and now you tell me I’m first and some
lady wants to look at me! This is
insane!” She raked her fingers through
her tousled hair and vented a brief, aggravated growl. “Screw this,” she said after the briefest
pause, “I’m leaving!” She turned on her heel and started for the massive silver
door through which they had entered, only she found
her path blocked by the other females in the cadre. They were standing close together, forming a
wall of living flesh, their eyes all focused on her. “Oh, now this is just too much,” she
groaned.
“The Lady
chooses you to go first. This is an
honor,” Rini’s quiet voice came from somewhere in the
crowd. “Women from all over the Universe
wait their entire lives just to be seen.
To be chosen first, especially after so short a time in the Dome, is not
only rare but an amazing honor that others would kill for.”
Rose had
the sinking, sick feeling that several of the other women facing her would be
glad to demonstrate Rini’s dire words. “Fine,” she said after a moment. “I’m first.
Fantastic.
First what?”
“The first
to give of your life force for The Lady,” Nova said calmly, pushing Rose ahead
of her, back into the cavernous space of the entry hall. “Choose.”
“Choose
what?” Rose cried, her voice bearing every trace of the nervous exasperation
and outright fear that was bubbling up inside her. Even as she spoke, a small platform rose from
the floor before her. On it were three
items: a bright silver knife with delicate carvings on the handle and blade; a
golden sickle, small enough to hold in one hand, with a handle of deepest ebony
color, and a plain wooden bowl, polished with age and use. No one spoke, not even in answer to her
question. Nova simply turned a pointed
gaze onto the platform, indicating that Rose must hurry. With a resigned, pained sigh, the English
woman stepped forward. Nothing is at it seems… if I’ve learned anything from that
daft man, it’s that. Give my life force…right. If I choose one of the pointy things, I might
bleed for it… Okay. Fine. Bowl it is. The collective gasp that went up when
her fingers plucked the bowl, no larger than the palm of herh
and, from the platform, was nearly deafening.
For a moment, she thought that the noise had come from the others around
her but she realized, as she spun to face her fellow captives, that they had
not done it. The sound seemed to come from the hall itself, the gasp echoing
from the high walls. “Okay, this is bad,
isn’t it?”
“Bring her
to me,” a voice so soft that it was almost a whisper said, apparently rising
from the stone around them.
Nova did
not manhandle her this time but bowed, a sweeping
motion that brought her head almost to her knees. Rose could not help the mirthless laugh that
bubbled from her lips as she stepped forward, slowly walking towards the front
of the chamber. The floor stretched on
endlessly—Rose thought the room must be bigger than any she had ever seen
before, bigger than a football field, she imagined. Her bare feet slapped on the purple stone
floor, the sound echoing off the walls around her. “Where am I going?” she asked quietly, not
sure if she were asking herself or some unseen captor.
“Stop,” the
hidden speaker ordered. “Kneel.”
Rose
automatically dropped to her knees, the tone so commanding that she did not
think to question it for a moment. “What’s
going on?” she said, a bit more boldness in her tone
than before. “Tell me what’s happening!”
“The Lady
is measuring you,” Rini’s voice came from a distance
behind her. “You are the first
combatant. You have chosen the bowl, the
sign of the consort. You have chosen the
most auspicious of the items.”
“What?” Rose felt a migraine coming on. “Oh, please let me wake up,” she
muttered. “I’ll take the Doctor’s dodgy
beans on toast over this…” A low rumble
sent tremors through her body, cutting off the progress of that train of
thought. Before she could stand, Rose
was plunged into darkness, seemingly surrounded by thousands of pin points of
light. “Oh, Hell…”
“Silence,
Rose Tyler of Earth,” a soft female voice commanded. “You are the first. You are chosen. Your task shall be easier than most but
harder than some…” The darkness split,
opening like a curtain before Rose’s face.
“This is my champion. Best her.”
