Finding Themselves
Chapter Six
Inside, Chip was screaming. As his body knelt, his mind beat against the cage Necrolai’s control had suddenly become, completely uselessly. It was progressing exactly as each of his nightmares had, and he knew precisely what was going to happen next. The vampire queen would walk over, say something witty, then touch him and take away the motor functions of his body. She would take her time playing with him, then finally bite him, and use him as the vessel for each of their magics. When she was finished, they would all be lifeless on the floor. Chip’s body shuddered a bit as he settled on his knees.
As the Yellow Ranger fought with Necrolai, he could tell that his will was controlling the others as hers was controlling his, and consequently theirs. Since he was the first to have the spell cast on him, he was apparently at the head of a sick game of follow the leader. Necrolai smiled languidly at Imperious and took her time walking to Chip. Koragg was panting on the floor, but watched intently from his sitting position. Never had he seen such a feat of power from the wretched hag, and could not help but be slightly impressed. She stopped and touched the Lightening Ranger on the shoulder, who immediately stood obediently.
Chip was beginning to panic. He was literally seconds away from killing them all, yet he could not force his hand to withdraw the Ax Magic Staff it was clenched around. The undead queen circled him slowly, smirking slightly that the other Rangers were still on their knees, only half aware of what was going on. She was going to savor every moment of her victory, as she had fought long and hard for it. By his smell, the Garuda Ranger was not only afraid, but hating himself for not finding some way out of the trap. She almost felt bad for him, except that taking over his will was so sweet.
Chip was exhausted and his entire body was showing the strain. He trembled as he stood, his muscles fighting against each other as two minds fought for control. It was like the surf beating up against a rocky shore; eventually the water would win, but not nearly soon enough to matter. Necrolai hissed, “Lovely,” and turned his head, removing his helmet and exposing his pale throat. Things were way past the desperate point, and at the last second, inspiration struck Chip.
He sent the command out as strongly as he could, saving just enough mental strength to keep Necrolai from taking over his entire mind. As one, the other Rangers shouted, “No!” and Nick whipped his red Magic Staff from his belt. In a flash of movement, the Red Ranger threw it to Chip, who transformed it mid-flight into the sword of the phoenix. The hilt landed perfectly in his yellow glove, point toward the ground. Like a flash, Necrolai’s hand was over Chip’s, keeping the weapon from moving toward her.
“Nice try, I’ll give you that,” she said, the very sound of her voice causing them all the flinch from their kneeling positions. “This little toy cannot kill me. You should know that, having already wasted a dawn crystal on that same purpose.” She stepped closer to the immobilized Ranger and continued, “It’s too late for you to do anything.” The minion of darkness brought her cold lips to the skin on his neck and laid an icy kiss directly over the artery. Both his body and his mind shuddered in revulsion, and it caused her to laugh in triumph.
The one moment of inattention gave him the break in control he needed. In a swift movement, Chip jerked the sword exactly on target, forcing it deep into flesh. A moment of shock held both of them as realization set in, and Necrolai stepped back uncertainly. “No!” she shrieked, echoing the Rangers’ earlier words, and looked down to see blood on her hands. Chip staggered back a step with a small smile on his lips, letting his eyes drift down to the bright red sword protruding from his chest. Both he and the vampire knew her plans for them were destroyed the moment the magical metal passed through his heart.
With the Yellow Ranger’s mind no longer capable of supporting Necrolai’s control over the rest of the team, they leaped up in unison, surging forward. Chip smiled at them triumphantly, his eyes sparkling for the first time since the whole thing started at Rootcore. Everything was going to be okay now that he had removed himself as a method of destruction, and he had no doubt they would be fine. After what he had done to Koragg, he knew he would never be good enough to stand with the Power Rangers again, so he hoped he could at least fall before them with some grace.
The world started to move in slow motion and he felt the strength begin to leave his body, like sap running from a tree. He saw the others screaming and running toward him, but couldn’t hear what they were saying. The redhead’s body began to weigh more and more, and soon, his legs simply couldn’t support him any longer. Because so much magic was in him, he was acutely aware of Necrolai trying to make his heart beat around the metal blade. It was a small victory against her that his autonomic system was unable to function, even with the magical push, and began to shut down.
Madison slid beside him and dropped, catching him as he fell. The Mystic Mermaid’s power already blazing blue around her, the healer’s touch was a soft, tingling warmth as she wrapped her arms around his heavy form. She bowed her head in concentration, completely still so as not to waste any energy on anything other than keeping him from death. Xander came to a halt on the ground on Chip’s other side, supporting his entire weight so the Blue Ranger could work unfettered. Although Chip couldn’t see their faces through their helmets, he knew they were set in grim determination.
Above him, there were two identical streaks, one red and the other pink. Vida screamed in rage and charged Necrolai, the full fury of the wind at her command. Two equally powerful tornadoes lifted the vampire queen into the air, pinning every other evil thing in the cave up against the walls. Necrolai flapped her wings uselessly and wailed as the winds blew opposite directions, immobilizing her by trying to tear her apart. One of her shoulders popped wetly as the arm was pulled out of the socket.
Immediately behind her was Nick, who stopped just long enough to wrap his hand around the hilt of his sword and pull it quickly from his friend. Chip screamed in agony, but the Red Ranger could not stop. Not only was red energy radiating from him, but actual flames were burning on his armor. He ran his sword into the suspended demon’s stomach, burying it to the hilt and ripping it upwards until it came out of her dislocated shoulder. Necrolai didn’t even have time to react.
A wave of black, dead blood poured from her halved torso, thrown against the walls by the furious wind. Necrolai’s gurgling scream of pain prompted Vida to cause the wind to tear at her now open insides. “T-that won’t kill me!” she rasped, clawing impotently at the air, “Nothing can kill me, I’m immort…“
Nick drew his sword through the air so fast it was like a streak of red lightening. The vampire’s severed head leaped from her shoulders and swirled away in a grisly dance on the wind. Immediately, all parts of her turned to ash and were dispersed through the cave by the dissipating breeze. The Red Ranger flicked the dark blood off his blade and turned to face the two enemies left standing, Imperious and Koragg. Vida stood beside him glowing pink, her Magic Staff held menacingly.
On the uneven stone of the cave floor, Chip’s breathing was becoming ragged and short. Madison was chanting quietly as she tried to keep him from slipping into the darkness, but the gentlest Ranger knew she was failing. It was as if he didn’t want to stay, felt as if he deserved to die. The milder Rocca sister suddenly flared with anger, whipping off her helmet so she could look at her friend. His green eyes were fading fast and she spoke to him forcefully, “What the hell do you think you’re doing?”
At the harsh question, the Green Ranger’s head snapped up in surprise. Chip struggled to answer but Madison talked over him. “Who do you think you are to leave us here like this? When the battle’s just starting?” She jerked her head toward the two Rangers standing guard while Imperious advanced and Koragg struggled to stand. Chip tried to respond, but the burning in his chest was overwhelming him. Madison addressed him again, “You got us into this, you get us out!”
She slapped her hand down hard on the hole in his chest and Chip arched in pain, crying out, “Udonna!” The plea echoed unnaturally loudly and Madison nodded slightly as she put her helmet back on. Snow began to fall inside the cave, bringing a strange calm with it. Madison stood and Xander followed suit, with no idea what just happened. As they joined the other Rangers, Madison understood that she had been right to draw out Chip’s incredible power. Summoning the White Ranger was just an added bonus, but in that moment of pain, she felt him take the reins of healing himself.
The falling powder coalesced into their guardian sorceress, clad in white armor and bearing the Snow Staff. She immediately knelt over the Yellow Ranger and placed her hands on his armored chest. Chip didn’t believe Udonna had responded to him at first, but then she let her magic flow. Because of centuries of practice, her healing powers were far more developed than Madison’s, and Chip cried out with the force of the spell. White intertwined with Yellow and forced his damaged heart to not only continue beating, but start to mend. Chip writhed under the searing touch, gritting his teeth as the white magic cleansed his wound.
Only a few seconds later, Chip was sitting up slowly in the whipping wind, slipping his helmet back on and stretching the newly closed puncture wound slightly. It was time to finish this. Xander and Madison had joined Nick and Vida, so Chip stepped up to complete the line with Udonna. Before them stood Imperius and Koragg, only one of whom was in any condition to fight. The mummy flicked his fan at the Rangers, cancelling out Vida’s wind. “Koragg!” he shouted, not even having to voice the command.
The purple warrior forced himself to his feet, having regained most of his strength and posted himself behind his shield. It split in half and more dark wolves than any of them had seen before started to pour out. Koragg had learned his lesson about holding back with the Mystic warriors and was taking no chances. Sparks flew as each of the Rangers fought off the nightmare beasts, and soon, all of them were on the ground, overwhelmed by the sheer numbers. “There will be no more mercy.”
Under the onslaught, Chip knew he had to do something to turn the tide, or they would be beaten. Koragg had never fought with them seriously before, so it was possible he could defeat them by himself. Chip looked around in desperation and took hold of the nearest Ranger, grabbing Maddie by the arm. “Sorry about this,” he said and drew on both of their powers. She whimpered as her blue magic flowed into him, this time unwillingly, and collapsed beside the Yellow Ranger. Chip stood up, glowing with twice the energy and immediately sent it right into the dark crystal at the center of Koragg’s shield.
The crystal shuddered as the good magic entered, then a bright yellow crack formed. Korrag shrieked as if he’d been burned and threw the shield away. The crystal shattered, tearing a horrible scream from Koragg’s throat. Chip had no idea he would be that effective, but stood up in triumph. Maddie moaned softly on the ground, but did not get up. Nick saw the Blue Ranger was down and went to her side, looking up at Chip angrily. “What did you do?”
Not taking his eyes off the enemy, the still glowing Garuda Ranger responded simply, “What I had to.” Koragg was writhing, and something was happening to his armor. It was changing, away from an evil minion, and more toward one of the great warriors of legend. Chip snorted, amused by the change in appearance. Many times he had seen his enemies try to beg for mercy by claiming they had been changed, Imperius even trying that trick on Daggeron recently. The Garuda warrior knew what he had to do.
The White Ranger nearly dropped her snow staff when she recognized who it was. “Leanbow? Chip! NO!”
The Yellow Ranger wasn’t going to give Koragg the chance to attack again, and leaped at him. In the back of his mind, he could hear Udonna screaming something about stopping, but did not allow her to distract him. His ax magic staff was glowing with power, and as he sailed through the air blade first, he was struck with the realization that he would finally kill Koragg. They made contact, and Chip’s powered up weapon easily cut through the Ancient Mystic’s sword and armor, into his body. Leanbow gurgled as the blade bit into him, and something changed inside Chip.
Up to then, the Yellow Ranger had been a pure soul. He had never killed anything that was not evil, had never created evil, and had never perpetrated an evil act on another. Even when he’d had chances to get back at the bullies who picked on him at school, the redhead had taken the higher ground and left them alone. In all his time as a Power Ranger, he had never done anything to abuse that power, and had constantly helped others at his own peril. He knew right from wrong, and had been a shining example of good.
Now, he had become something else. He had cast a forbidden spell on his best friend, tortured another living being using Xander, and taken Madison’s power without her consent. He had tried to take on the dark tasks for the rest of the team, so none of their souls would be sullied by such horrible acts, and Chip thought it was all worth it. But as his ax sank through the Mystic’s flesh, he suddenly understood that he had just made a terrible mistake. His blade was cutting through a pure soul.
Leanbow’s scream died out as he fell, his life blood draining to pool around his fallen form. Udonna wailed in a combination of rage and pain, and tried to get to Chip. But something was happening that made her heart sink. Vida, Nick, and Xander all stared at the transformation, shielding the still Madison with their bodies. A lightning bolt made of darkness, rather than light, erupted from the Yellow Ranger’s heart, throwing everyone down. A scream like nothing they had ever heard was ripped from Chip’s throat, and the lightning bolt began dance around his armor, causing their friend to writhe in its grip.
His shining yellow armor began to darken, and the Garuda spirit shrieked as its human warrior changed. The white light that had been Chip’s soul changed to a sickening black hole, drawing in power and feeding off the life force of Leanbow. His armor began to gleam in the darkness, blacker than any night, and accented by the yellow of the Garuda. Chip’s scream came to a sudden, choked end and he landed on his hands and knees, panting hard. When he finally stood, a cold radiated off him that only meant he had become a dark soul, evil himself.
To be continued…
