That night, I stayed with Sam until dawn came. I would have to head back to Bill’s house to sleep during the day. Sam didn’t care. The main thing was we could be together. Sam and I were just snuggled on the bed. I rested my head on his chest. I could still hear his heart beating, but now I could hear the blood pulsing through his veins and the heart. I shut my eyes. “Liz,” Sam said quietly. “You can bite me. I don’t care.” “No,” I said shaking my head. “I will not use you like a blood bag.” Sam sat up, as did I. He gently took my chin. His blue eyes caught the light. If my heart had still been beating, it would’ve stopped. He looked so damn adorable. “You wouldn’t be using me for that,” he said staring into my eyes. He kissed me softly and let his kisses trail down my throat. I let my head fall back. I felt my fangs slide down. Apparently, when you get turned on, they come out. My eyes snapped open. I lowered my mouth to his neck. He was still, expectant. The tips of my fangs just barely pierced Sam’s neck. A small trickle of blood ran down. Suddenly, flashes went off before my eyes. I saw Sam when he was young and how he’d slept with the maenad for the first time. How he’d met Sookie…their friendship…then Daphne. I could feel his emotions through the whole thing. Love, betrayal, hurt. I saw him the first time he met me. I felt his emotions then. They were raw and so strong. I saw our friendship speeding by as though on fast forward. I saw Sam cradling my body when the werewolf had attacked me. I felt his pure anguish and it felt as though his soul had shattered into a million pieces. I gasped and drew away, my fangs retracting automatically. I raised a hand to my mouth. “Liz? What is it? What happened?” Sam asked me searching my face. He wiped the small droplets of blood off his neck. My hand shook as I lowered it. “I—I saw visions of your childhood, then it flashes forward. I felt everything you had experienced,” I said. “I felt your emotion when I died. Everything leading up to this point.” I felt the tears swelling in my eyes. Sam wrapped his arms around me pulling me close against him. “Don’t cry. It’s kinda gross,” he teased lightly. I managed a chuckle and sniffled against his chest. He pressed his face into my neck. “My soul felt like it shattered when you died,” he admitted quietly against my shoulder. I nuzzled his neck and just shut my eyes. “I almost couldn’t bear not having you in my life anymore,” He continued pulling back from the embrace. He cupped my face in his hands. “You’re even more beautiful now.” “Hey,” I said pretending to be affronted. “Not that you weren’t beautiful before,” Sam said quickly looking upset that his words hadn’t come out right. “Relax, I was just teasing,” I grinned. He just smiled and kissed me. I kissed him back. “I think it’s pretty awesome that you can kick my ass now though,” He joked. I laughed and playfully but lightly cuffed him. That resulted in a wrestling match. Of course I never used my full strength on him. When we were tired out, I just remained with him enjoying the feel of his body against mine. His body was warm as mine was cold, but he never complained or said anything. When it was time to go, Sam had dozed off. I smoothed some hair away from his forehead and kissed him on the bridge of his nose. I headed off to Bill’s house to sleep during the day. That evening, I was working as usual. Sam was behind the bar. He handed Sookie three beers. She placed them on the tray and headed off to one of the booths. I wrote down an order from table 1 and dropped it off to Lafayette. “You know girlfriend,” he said coyly. “Sex with vampires is addicting. I heard it’s unbelievable. You might give your boy toy there a heart attack.” “It’s true,” Sookie said coming up beside me. “When Bill and I…” “Oh good God Sookie,” I whined clamping a hand over my ears. “Even with my new hearing I don’t want to hear you finish the rest of that sentence please.” Lafayette and Sookie burst out laughing. Shaking my head I picked up table 3’s order and passed by the bar. Sam gave me a private wink. I returned it and placed the order on the right table. Chatter was going on as usual. As I went to pass the bar again, I suddenly stopped. I gripped the edge of the bar. Merlotte’s vanished around me. I was standing on a road. There was a car that had crashed into a pole. A man and woman were slumped forward. The horn was going off and there was blood on the windshield. The scene shifted to the backseat. A little girl was sobbing, apparently unharmed. She was adorable and absolutely terrified. The vision vanished and I was back at Merlotte’s. “Liz?” Sookie’s voice came from my left. I blinked and looked. Sam and Sookie were standing, watching me anxiously. “There’s a car accident on Garrett’s road. There’s a little girl crying in the back seat,” I relayed to them. Sam threw the dish rag down onto the counter. “Arlene? You’re in charge till I come back,” He called. The red haired waitress nodded and waved, showing that she understood. “Show us,” Sam said to me. I led Sam and Sookie to Garrett’s road. We climbed out of my rental car, a Nissan Altima. Sure enough, right where I saw the car in my vision was right here. Smoke billowed out from underneath the hood. There was blood splattered on the windshield and windows, except the back ones. I approached the back door and quickly opened it. The little girl saw me. Tears streamed down her cheeks. Sam carefully opened the front driver’s door. The man’s body tumbled out. “Shit,” Sam breathed. “He was completely drained of blood.” I reached in and unbuckled the little girl’s seat belt. I carefully helped her out. “We should get away from here. It could explode and I smell gas,” Sam said warily. We headed back over to where the Altima was parked. Then, I crouched down in front of the little girl. She seemed unharmed, just terrified. Sam crouched down next to me. “Hey there,” he said softly gently putting a hand on her shoulder. “What’s your name?” “Emma,” she said sniffling. “What a pretty name,” Sookie said crouching down next. “I’m Sookie. This is Sam and Liz. Do you know what happened to your mommy and daddy?” Her tone was gentle and soft. Emma nodded. Her big green eyes moved onto me. “Big men with fangs attacked them,” Sam raised his eyes to mine and mouthed ‘vampires’. “I need to talk to Liz for a moment. Stay with Sookie ok? She’s gonna tell you a funny story,” Sam said. Sookie gently took the little girls hand and gently placed her in the back of the car. She climbed in next beside her. I heard her talking to Emma as Sam gently grabbed my elbow and led me away from the rental car, out of ear shot. Sam exhaled loudly. “Why would vampires attack an innocent family?” he asked me musingly. I shrugged. “I don’t know. But we can’t leave her alone,” I said glancing back at the car. “She’s scared.” A knowing expression fell over Sam’s face. “You want to take her in for now don’t you?” he said quietly. “Oh Sam. She’s so cute. We could have Sheriff Dearborne locate any family members but until then we can’t leave her,” I pleaded. Sam grinned. “Alright. I agree with you,” he said and turned to head back to the car when someone leapt from the bushes and tackled Sam to the ground. It was a man. His fangs were already bared and prepared to sink into Sam’s neck. I felt my fangs slide down and I hissed at the man. “Back off. He’s mine,” I growled at the man angrily. The man looked up at me and smirked. “This isn’t about him being yours babe. I’m going to kill him,” I snarled. “Over my undead body you are,” I snapped. The man yanked Sam’s head to the left, exposing his throat. He lowered his head to sink his fangs into Sam’s flesh. I leapt at the man with inhuman speed, knocking him off of Sam. Sam shakily got to his feet. “Go back to the car. I will finish this bastard off,” I rounded on Sam. “I can’t leave you Liz!” Sam cried. “GO!” I yelled and with a rough shove, pushed Sam. Sam sailed through the air and his back hit the driver’s side door. He landed in a heap, and then he scrambled to his feet and quickly climbed in the car. SAM. My back was killing me. “Where’s Liz?” Sookie demanded nervously from the back seat. I glanced in the rearview mirror. Emma had curled up against Sookie and was fast asleep. “Some vampire guy attacked me. He wanted to kill me. Liz is fighting him off,” I said nervously wincing in pain as I turned my head to look out the window. It was about 10 minutes or so when the passenger side door was pulled open. We all jumped nervously, but Liz slid into the seat. I put the car in drive and we peeled away. “Are you ok?” I asked her anxiously as we turned left onto the main road. Liz nodded. “Yeah. He is dead…well, no longer going to be harming anyone,” She said. “Oh God did I hurt you?” Concern clouded her face as she looked at me. “My back is killing me though,” I admitted wincing. “Drink this,” Liz said as she let her fangs slide down and bit into her own wrist. She held her wrist out to me. Reluctantly, I pulled over and pressed my lips to her wound. I drank a bit. When she was sure I was ok, she pulled her wrist back. It was already healed. I began feeling better already. When we pulled into town again, I pulled into the bar’s parking lot. We climbed out. Sookie gently maneuvered so that Emma wouldn’t get disturbed. I gently picked her up in my arms. I had one arm under her backside. Her head was resting on my shoulder; one arm hung down while the other one was wrapped around my neck. She was out cold. Sookie gave us a hug and explained that she needed to get home. She would see us tomorrow. Liz and I entered the bar. Eric was waiting in one of the booths. “My my looking lovely Liz,” he said smoothly. His eyes roamed onto Sam, and then spied Emma. “And who is this?” he asked, his tone light and charming. “Emma,” Sam replied watching Eric warily. “Her parents were killed on Garrett’s road. A vampire attacked them and drained them of blood. One tried to kill me.” I knew Sam had deliberately left out the fact that I in turn had killed the vampire. That was punishable by the higher vampire. I would’ve had to go to court. I knew Sam didn’t tell Eric deliberately. But, if they found the body, someone would eventually realize what had happened. “I had to stop that vampire from harming Sam,” I said slowly keeping my eyes on Eric. “Liz,” I heard Sam breathe. Eric kept his eyes locked on me. “What did he look like?” Eric asked tilting his head. I relayed the vampires appearance to Eric. He looked thoughtful. “Well, I would say you did our kind a justice,” Eric said finally. “The vampire’s name was James Hampton. He was going around creating new vampires without authorization.” Sam and I glanced at one another before turning back to Eric. “I will not tell the maître’d,” Eric said. I heard Sam exhale in relief. “Um, why are you here?” Sam asked clearing his throat. Eric stood up. “I was hoping Sookie was here. I’m guessing she went back to Bills? I’ll go contact her there,” Eric gave a little bow and smiled. “I shall see you later Miss Elizabeth,” he said and then headed out of the bar. I turned to Sam. “Come on she needs sleep,” Sam said gently. We headed into his trailer. Sam placed Emma down on the bed. Emma adjusted and curled up. Sam and I sat down in the little booth section that was in the kitchen. Sam sat across from me. He glanced back at Emma. “I’ll call Sheriff Dearborne in the morning for her,” He said. “Right now she just needs to sleep. She witnessed something horrible.” I smiled lovingly at him. He was so good with kids. I nodded. Something began gnawing at my stomach. I stared down at my hands. “Sam? Do you realize that I will outlive you?” I asked him quietly keeping my eyes on the table top, pretending that I found the edge of it interesting. Sam slowly reached out and grasped my hand. His fingers intertwined with mine. I still avoided looking at him. “Liz, shifters age slowly…very slowly,” Sam explained. “I’m not worried about that right now. I’m just happy to be with you. Even if you’re a vampire.” He added the last part softly and he reached over with his other hand and lightly pushed some of my blond hair behind my ear. I smiled. Sam yawned. I could see he was exhausted. “Sleep Sam. I’ll stay with you till dawn,” I said softly. He leaned up and gave me a soft kiss on the forehead. Sam crossed his arms over the table and gently laid his head down on top of them. I gently ran a hand through his blond hair. I heard him let out a content sigh and within minutes, he had fallen asleep. I could hear his breathing. It was soft and rhythmic. I still had about 3 hours till dawn. I matched Sam’s position, letting the top of my head lightly touch his. I just relaxed. It was about 45 minutes later when a scream tore through the trailer. Sam and I jumped upright. We ran to the bedroom to find Emma sitting bolt upright crying hysterical. “Oh honey,” I said softly going to her. I sat down. Emma curled up in my lap with her head resting on my thigh. I gently smoothed back her hair, talking to her softly and soothingly. Sam crouched down and put his face close to Emma’s. “Did you have a bad dream?” he asked her warmly. She nodded as tears streamed down her cheeks. “Well,” Sam said crossing his arms on the edge of the bed and letting his chin rest on them. “I just so happen to know a certain dog that is a bad dream chaser. And Liz here, is my second in command. Would you like the dog to stay with you tonight?” I couldn’t help but grin. Emma nodded. Sam winked at Emma. “OK. Lemme go get him,” Sam said and looked at me. I gave him a warm expression as he headed out of the trailer. A few moments later, Sam the border collie came trotting in. Emma broke into a huge grin when she saw him. The dog jumped up on the bed and let his two paws drape over Emma’s legs. She gently stroked his head. Sam licked her face, which resulted in her giggling. A few moments later, Emma was curled up again, fast asleep with Sam guarding her. I checked my watch. It was nearing dawn. I leaned down and kissed the dog on the head. “I’ll see you tomorrow love,” I whispered to him. The dog let out a low whine but stayed where he was. I left the trailer. Dawn was starting to approach fast. I could see the sunlight starting to streak over the horizon. Panicked, I ran toward Bills’. The sun beams stretched on the ground and was getting closer to me. As I ran, my foot caught a uprooted tree root causing me to fall flat on the ground. I propped myself up as the first ray reached my ankle. Then extended up my calf…thigh, rear-end….back. I shut my eyes, knowing the end was coming.
