The first thing we did the next day was set about sorting out the camp, moving the bodies and preparing for burying them. Me and Anna were just taking a breather from moving a zombie body into the fire when we over heard Glenn yelling “we don’t burn our own we bury them, understand? People go in that row over there.” When I heard this I turned to Anna and hissed “if I die don’t you dare bury me.... I’d rather be burned.” Anna nodded as she said “yep me too.” We carried on sorting out the bodies and then we heard Jacque calling out “a walker got Jim, a walker bit Jim.” “Are you fucking kidding me?” I said to Anna hovering my hand over my bowie knife. This day just keeps getting better and better I thought.
We all ended up in a debate about Jim’s fate. “I say we put a pick axe in his head and the dead girl and be done with it.” Daryl was saying, me and Anna nodded in agreement. Shane turned on us. “That what you’d want if it where you?” Daryl was the one to reply “yer and I’d thank you while you did it.” I nodded and added “or a bullet, it would be better just to get it over with... there’s no happy ending to this.” Dale spoke up next “I hate to say it, I never thought I would but maybe Daryl and the girls are right.” “Jim’s not a monster Dale or some rabid dog.... he’s sick...” Rick snapped. “I’m not suggesting...” Dale started but Rick cut him off “a sick man! We start down that road, where do we draw the line?” “The line’s pretty clear! Zero tolerance for walkers or the debate.” Daryl barked. Rick spoke again “what if we can get him help? I heard the CDC was working on a cure.” “Talk about blind optimism” I said under my breath. I was surprised that it was Shane who voiced this by saying “I heard that too. I heard a lot of things before the world went to hell.” “What if the CDC is still up and running?” Rick asked. “Man, that is a stretch right there.” Shane said echoing my thoughts again. Rick pushed his point “why? If there’s any government, any... any structure at all they’d protect the CDC at all costs, wouldn’t they? I think it’s our best shot, shelter, protection...” Shane butted in “ok Rick you want those things. I do too, now if they existed there at the army base, Fort Benning.” “This debate is a total waste of time, they’re just going to pussy out and end up chasing a pipe dream.” I said low enough for just Anna and Daryl to hear as Laurie was saying “that’s a hundred miles in the opposite direction.” Shane pressed his idea saying “that’s right but it’s away from the hot zone. Now listen if that place is operational it will be heavily armed, we’ll be safe there.” Rick countered with “The military where on the front lines of this thing, they got over run, we’ve all seen that. The CDC’s our best choice and Jim’s only chance.” Daryl finally lost his temper at this point. “You go looking for aspirin, do what you need to do. Somebody needs to have some balls and take care of the damm problem.” He said swinging his pick axe up and heading for Jim. Rick pointed a gun at Daryl’s head and I yelled out to Daryl. “We don’t kill the living.” Rick stated calmly. “That’s funny coming from a man who just put a gun to my head.” Daryl said with sass. I couldn’t help but share a small smile with Anna. Shane nodded agreeing with Rick by saying “we may disagree on some things, not this, you put it down... go on.” Daryl dropped the axe and stormed away. “So, it looks like we’re going to follow this fairy tale.” I said to Anna before we left to carry on sorting out the bodies.
We spotted Carol sitting to one side wiping away tears. I nudged Anna and nodded in the direction of Carol asking “you think we should talk to her?” Anna nodded “I have an idea.” Anna said giving a small smile. We walked over and Anna touched her softly on the shoulder asking “any chance we could talk to you?” Carol looked a little nervous but smiled and nodded. Once we got a little way from everyone else Anna started “right... Carol, I know you feel like crap... kind of sad and angry but you needed to know that it’s ok to feel that way you’re in mourning and we wanted to tell you we’ve been where you are now and it gets better.” “How could you?” Carol mumbled. I took a deep breath and stated “because we’ve been though abusive relationships and come out on the other side Hun...my stepmum told me that it only happens to strong woman... and I know you don’t feel like it right now but I promise you will.” “But you need to let the anger out before you can start to heal Hun...”Anna began “you need to be the one to sort out Ed it’s a good way to get rid of the resentment, heartache and anger you feel towards him.” Anna said resting her hand on Carol’s shoulder “we’ll even come with you if you want?” she added. Carol nodded her head saying “I’d like that.” We walked with her to where Daryl was sorting out the bodies and gave her a friendly push towards him. “I’ll do it. He’s my husband.” Carol said softly, Daryl handed her the pick axe and gave her space. She looked at Ed sadly for a few moments before bringing the axe up and swinging it down in to the head of Ed’s corpse. After about 3 or four swings Daryl started to look like he wanted to do something and looked at me and Anna for direction, I gave a small shake of my head with a sad smile and took hold of Anna’s hand, thinking sometimes all people need is a little push to start the healing process and we were lucky enough to be there when Carol needed one. After Carol was finished Anna walked over to her and draped her arm around her shoulders. “You did great.” Anna said walking with Carol back to camp. Once out of ear shot Daryl said “what was that about?” “Don’t worry about it. It was just something she needed to do.”I replied kindly with a small smile and walked away.
That afternoon was the funeral, we stood on the top of a hill with the rest of the group in silence. The saddest part was seeing Andrea struggling to put Amy in the grave all by herself. Anna and I stuck to the back of the group feeling kind of in the way, we didn’t really know any of the people that had died only Amy and even still not that well. When everyone else started to head back to the camp we stayed behind to give a hand burying the bodies. Later that evening when everyone was settled after the funeral Shane spoke “I’ve a... I’ve been thinking about Rick’s plan, now look there are no... No guaranties, ether way. I’ll be the first one to admit that. I’ve known this man a long time... I trust his instincts. I say the most important thing here is that we to stay together. Those of you who agree, we leave first thing in the morning, okay?” after we’d eaten I approached Daryl “hey... erm... you coming to the CDC tomorrow?” I asked hesitantly. He grunted and nodded his head already preparing his stuff. “Good coz I have a favour to ask you.” “Go on.” He said. “Well me and Anna are running low on fuel and I was wondering if I’d be able to put my bike on the back of your truck with Merles so I can give Anna my share of fuel..... And ride with you.” I finished quickly looking at my feet, hoping to hide the blush. “Sure.” He said carrying on with his packing. “Thanks!” I said heading back to my and Anna’s tent to sort out our own stuff. “Come on. We’d better get some kip it’s gonna be a long day tomorrow.” I said to Anna after we had finished.
