Rick was planning a supply run, along with Daryl, Allen, and T. As usual, Lori was the last to hear about it.
She slowly walked up the stairs and along the catwalk to his cell, five month old Julia balanced on her hip, and stood in the doorway. She hesitated to approach him, in the fear that she would just to get shot down again. He could not have picked a cell further away from where she was with Judith and Julia.
"So, where are you going?" She asked.
No response. He turned his back to her and continued to get things together in his knapsack in the cell he shares with Carl.
"Look, Rick, I know you don't love me anymore. For whatever reason, I don't know. Seven months…almost a year you haven't said a word to me, but considering the fact that nobody knows if anyone will be alive at the end of the day, can you at least acknowledge my existence? Whatever it was I did wrong, I'm sorry. Again. Just please talk to me and tell me why everything changed so suddenly."
He put the strap over his shoulder and walked forward, not making eye contact with his wife. He gave Julia a kiss on the forehead and said, "See you soon, my baby girl."
He walked passed Lori and towards the men who were getting ready to go.
"Goodnight, love." Lori said loudly. His stride slowed for just a moment before he continued walking away.
Lori gave up counting the days. It was getting cool, she knew that, but the thought of living by a calendar was absurd. Two nights had passed since Rick left. She had no idea if he was alive or dead. It was a pleasant sunny day, so she was sitting in the courtyard with Carol, Sophia, Billy, AJ, Becca, Ben, Carl, Judith and Julia.
In the six months that passed since they settled into the prison, everything seemed to settle into place. They had rows of crops, several animals, and Abraham and Allen, both engineers, hooked up the water, and had some electricity thanks to a solar panel grid, but had to be mindful of using it.
The ladies were enjoying the cool, crisp air when Carol saw something out of the corner of her eye; more people. Regular people, not those things. It looked like a family. Merle ran out with a shotgun, and Lori snapped at him to lower it. The people clearly weren't a threat.
Carol took the kids as Lori and Merle walked to the gate. Abe opened the first fence, then the three went to the lower gate to meet the new arrivals.
"What the fuck are those?" Merle asked, as he pointed to the pets.
"They're harmless. Remove the arms and jaws, and they mask your scent. Sir, ma'am, please, this is my family. My wife is pregnant, please, help." The man asked.
"Is anyone bitten or scratched?" Lori asked.
The man and his wife shook their heads no.
Lori nodded to Merle, who opened the gate. The large family of nine walked through, with one of the women holding onto the ends of a rope with the other end tied around the necks of the armless walkers.
"Ma'am. Thank you, so much. You saved my family." The man said, almost in tears of gratitude. "This is my wife, Michonne, our girls, Collette and Elodie, our sons, Michael and Terry, and our little boy, Andre, and she's got a bun in the oven. This is my sister, Sasha, and her husband, Bob. Bob's a doctor, and we can help."
Lori put out her hand and said "I'm Lori. You guys must be hungry."
Ty and his family were welcomed into the fold, were able to take showers, albeit cold ones, and ate real food for the first time in months.
Glenn showed Ty around, showed Bob to the infirmary, and introduced them to everyone else. Just like every other time she met a nineteen year old man, Michonne got her hopes up, thinking, maybe…
That gave Carol and Lori a chance to speak with Sasha and Michonne.
Three year old Andre made fast friends with Billy, Ben, AJ, Becca and Judith. Ten year old Terry was sitting with Carl, and eighteen year old Collette and seventeen year old Elodie were sitting with Michonne.
Carol explained who is who, and introduced Andrea, who was begging for someone to watch three month old Amy so she could get some sleep. She didn't even bother to thank Carol when the woman came in to take the baby.
"Well, she's a handful." Sasha said, referring to the blonde.
Lori and Carol looked at each other and chuckled. "You have no idea!" Carol laughed.
The six strangers soon became friends, and once Andre, Judy, Carol and Sophia went to sleep the ladies went to the kitchen and talked through most of the night. Carol mentioned Ed, and that she's never been happier since he's been gone.
Lori grimaced, and tried to keep her emotions in check, when she started talking about Rick. How seven months ago he completely changed, and didn't give her the time of day.
"What I can't figure out is how one night he's hugging me, and rubbing my belly, and twenty four hours later he won't talk to me."
"You said he refused to stand by you at the baby's birth?" Michonne asked.
Lori had tears in her eyes and she shook her head no. "And what bugs me is I know Carl has picked up on it, but Judy is now doing so. And I have no idea why." The taste of salt on her lips caused her to realize that she was crying. She cursed herself, wanting to be strong for the long journey ahead of her, but she couldn't control the broken bridge her emotions were riding on.
