Dean headed down the highway toward Memphis while being careful to obey the speed limit. Normally he didn’t, but they couldn’t risk getting pulled over now. Natalie’s house was close, and they needed her help. Sam called her to tell her they were on the way and synopsis of why. When Sam hung up the phone he had the hint of a goofy grin on his face. “You like her don’t you?” Dean smirked.
“Shut up!” Sam turned his attention out the window. “I mean, so what if I do? She’s a great girl that knows what we do and has helped us a lot. I don’t think she likes me in that way though.”
“Don’t sell yourself short, Sammy. You’re a good looking guy, and look at me and Liam. That hit me out of left field and I never saw it coming. Speaking of which, you still awake back there?”
“Yep,” Liam called out.
“Good. You keep it that way. The doctor said you got your brain scrambled being stupid, and you’re not supposed to sleep for twenty four hours after a concussion like that.”
“I wasn’t being stupid,” Liam argued. “I was trying to help.”
“The whole thing was stupid. You didn’t actually end up helping us, and you got attacked again and injured pretty badly all for nothing. When we actually needed your help once we were out you were too injured from running your mouth. I love you, but sometimes I really wanna smack some sense into you.”
“Love you too,” Liam sighed.
They were pulling into Natalie’s driveway in a little over two hours. Sam got out and grabbed their bags while Dean helped Liam to his feet. Natalie was waiting for them and opened the door before they could even knock. She flung her arms around Sam and hugged him tight. “I really missed you three,” she said before letting go of Sam and hugging Dean. Liam she just leaned up and kissed on the cheek. “I hear you’re not doing so hot.”
“Nope, got his ribs broken because he doesn’t know how to play nice with authority figures, and got a concussion jumping into a fight he should’ve stayed out of,” Dean said while he took Liam to the couch.
“What do you guys need?” Natalie asked.
“First off, once again Liam needs a doctor that won’t ask questions,” Dean answered. “I know, he really needs to go to a hospital to see how bad his brain injury really is, and to make sure his ribs didn’t puncture anything, but we can’t risk that right now. After that, we need new plates for the car. We’re gonna need new credit cards, but I can take care of that. Then we just need some place safe to stash Liam while he heals. Bones take what, several weeks?”
“You’re not leaving me somewhere that long!”
“Babe,” Dean put his hands on Liam’s shoulders. “Listen to me for once. In order to hunt and not get killed you have to be strong and healthy. You are god damn lucky getting squished by that big guy didn’t rip open a lung. I know you don’t like sitting idly by, but you’re going to have to let your body heal.”
“You know he’s welcome to stay here as long as he needs,” Natalie said. “You are a pain in the butt sometimes, but you’re lovable.”
“Yeah, well, he’s started on a whole new brand of annoying,” Dean sighed. “You’ll have to watch him like a hawk to make sure he eats. He’ll avoid it and lie about if he can. He ended up in the hospital just a few days ago from passing out because he was lying to us.”
“Well, he’ll behave for me, won’t you, sweetie?” Natalie stroked Liam’s hair.
“Do I have a choice?”
“No,” she smiled. “I’ll go make a few phone calls.”
In another two hours a doctor was at the house. He stressed the importance of a hospital, but examined Liam anyway. Luckily he didn’t ask what happened. He just asked Liam a lot of questions about what he was feeling and pressed on his chest. “Well, from everything you’ve told me, I think you have several badly cracked ribs. Since you said it happened last night and you’re only major problem is it hurts to breathe, I don’t think you damaged anything internally. I’m going to give you a prescription for Codine for pain. I know it hurts, but you need to be able to breathe deeply and cough to prevent a chest infection. Just take it easy and you should be right as rain again in about six weeks.”
Natalie thanked and paid him as he left. Then she turned to Liam. “You heard him, you’re mine for six weeks. I’ll get you your pills in the morning. Do you have anything for now?”
Liam nodded. “There should be some left over pain pills in my bag from getting shot. But those make me sleep, and I’m not supposed to sleep. I want to sleep because I didn’t last night. How could I with that thing locked up with me?”
“I’m sorry, sweetie,” Natalie wrapped her arms around his neck. “You really should have listened to Dean and not gone in there. The consequence is six weeks on the sidelines with me. That shouldn’t be too horrible.”
“No,” Liam sighed. “I guess I deserve it.”
“Hey, Natalie, I really don’t mean to be a pain, but if Liam gives you a list movies, can you go get them tonight?” Dean asked. “I mean, he’s gotta stay up, and I thought I’d stay up with him to make sure he doesn’t doze off. I just had a thought that we could watch movies all night.”
“That’s actually a good idea,” Natalie smiled. “And don’t worry about being a pain. I usually just take care of the house and my father. I like taking care of you guys too. But I don’t have to leave the house for you two to watch movies. Be right back.”
She disappeared into her father’s study and came back a little while later. “All done,” she smiled. “Liam, since you’re gonna be here a while, watch what I do.” She turned the TV on. “This is a smart TV. You press this button here,” she pressed the home button and a screen with icons appeared. “You wanna select Netflix with these arrow keys like so.” A screen popped up asking for username and password with a keyboard on the left. “This is the annoying part. It should stay logged in after this, but just in case I’ll write everything down for you.” She typed everything in letter by letter. Then she made him a profile and a list popped up. “There you go,” she handed Liam the remote. “They don’t have everything, but they have a lot. I’ll go make you some popcorn, and just your luck I bought some cherry Coke today.”
“This is kinda cool,” Dean commented as he watched Liam flip through the list. He pulled his mate in to lean against him. “Just let me know if I’m hurting you.”
“Love, breathing hurts me, but I kinda have to keep doing that. Oh, ‘The Princess Bride’.”
Dean kissed the side of Liam’s head. “Yes, you must keep breathing for me. I’d be extremely upset if you ever stopped doing that.”
Liam pushed the button to play the movie. After a few minutes Natalie brought out a big bowl of cheese popcorn and two big glasses of cherry Coke. “I’ll get out of your way,” she said as she left.
They sat all night snuggled on the couch watching movie after movie that looked interesting. Every time it looked like Liam was dozing off Dean shook him back awake. “Babe, I know you’re tired, but you can’t sleep just yet.”
“I don’t care if I fall into a coma anymore,” Liam mumbled and tried to go back to sleep.
Dean kept shaking him until his eyes opened again. “That’s just the exhaustion talking. And I happen to care a lot. How can you annoy me if you’re in a coma?”
Liam gave him a little halfhearted slap on the shoulder. “I don’t always annoy you!”
“No, you don’t. Just most of the time,” Dean chuckled. “And I love seeing those gorgeous gray eyes of yours, especially when they light up because you’re happy.”
“My brother told me I have my mother’s eyes, like Harry Potter.”
“I don’t know who that is, but your mother must’ve had beautiful eyes then. I kinda wish I could’ve met her and thanked her for bringing such a wonderful man into the world.”
“I wish I had met her too. All I have are stories my brother told me. But bringing me into the world cost her her life.”
Dean stroked Liam’s hair. “That kind of thing happened a lot back in those days. Your dad was wrong, it wasn’t your fault. I bet that while you were inside her and up to the moment she died she loved you very much.”
“You know my dad left Ireland for her?”
“No, you never told me that. You’re Irish then?”
“Yep. My dad was an Irish priest. Then he met my mother and the sparks flew. Of course, you know, Catholic priests can’t marry, they had to be celibate. He could’ve just flat out left the church and done something else, but he didn’t want to. He still wanted to serve God. My dad could be pretty stubborn. Guess I know where I get it. Anyway, he decided to move here to colonies so he could convert to being Protestant so he could marry. He asked my mother to come with him and she said yes.”
Dean laughed at the stubborn comment. “You are one stubborn son of a bitch, but that’s a really romantic story. Honestly, I don’t think your dad was a bad guy, he was just human. If he went through all of that to be with your mother it must’ve really hurt him to lose her. It was a giant mistake to take it out on you the way he did. Though, knowing you, I’m sure you didn’t help the situation because you probably pressed his buttons every chance you got. Still, wherever he is now, I bet he regrets it.”
Liam shrugged. “Maybe. He’s with his wife again, so that’s gotta make him happy. In fact, the whole family is together, with the exception of me. That’s the way they were happiest. I ruined everything.” He pressed his face to Dean’s chest and started to cry.
“Hey, don’t do that!” Dean started rubbing his back. “I told you, it’s not your fault. Those things just happened. I know it’s sad, but hey, your brother loved you, right?”
Liam nodded. “Like I told you, he killed our father to protect me. Another thing that’s all my fault.”
“Babe, intolerance is to blame for that. You’re gay and that’s just the way you are. You didn’t choose it because you thought it would be fun to give your dad another reason to hate you. I have no control over my sexuality. Nobody does. Women have always done it for me in the past. I didn’t wake up one day and think to myself, hey, I wanna try dudes now. Nope, not how it happened. I met you and ended up falling for the person inside the body, and then something inside my brain must’ve rewired itself because suddenly I was attracted to you. My dad hates it, but he can go fuck himself as far as I’m concerned. I love you, and I really enjoy making love to you. I’ll keep doing it as long as you keep letting me.”
Liam smiled softly and leaned up to kiss his mate. “I’d say we go for it now, but you’ll probably say no because I’m hurt and in pain.”
“You’re right,” Dean nodded and kissed him again. “My desire to not hurt you is stronger than my desire to fuck you senseless. Sorry, but the doctor told you to take it easy.”
“Yeah, but six weeks?” Liam whined. “I don’t wanna go without sex for six weeks.”
“Me either, but it is a hardship we will both have to endure. Tell you what, we’ll wait at least three weeks, and then see what kind of shape you’re in.”
“Okay, I guess that seems fair,” Liam nodded.
Natalie cleared her throat as she entered the room. “Morning, guys.”
Dean looked up at her and rubbed his face. “Is it morning already?”
“It is,” she nodded. “How are you two doing?”
“I’m tired as hell,” Dean answered. “And he keeps trying to fall asleep on me.”
“Making good use of your new Netflix account?”
“Yes, thank you,” Liam nodded. “I’m sure I’ll keep using it while I’m here.”
“Good. You boys okay with pancakes for breakfast?”
“Can you make them chocolate chip and make that blueberry sauce?” Liam asked.
“Man, you have weird taste,” Dean shook his head.
Natalie chuckled. “I’ll make a few chocolate chip for Liam, and plain for everyone else. And Dean, before you say anything, it really is no bother. Like I said last night, you’re my friends now, and I like doing things for you. Maybe I’ll ask Sam if he wants chocolate chip too.”
A little while later they were all at the table eating breakfast. Liam looked like he was about to pass out and fall face first into his chocolate chip pancakes with blueberry sauce. “I found us a case in Joliet, Illinois,” Sam said over his own chocolate chip pancakes with maple syrup and butter. “A bunch of people have disappeared.”
“Great,” Dean nodded. “Natalie, did our new plate come in yet?”
“As a matter of fact, it did,” Natalie nodded. She got up and fetched a large envelope from the counter and handed it over. “It’s a Tennessee plate, hope that’s not a problem.”
Dean took it. “If that’s all you could get I won’t complain. Sam, get everything ready to go. You’re driving while I sleep.”
“You’re really so eager to leave me?” Liam frowned.
Dean took his hand and squeezed it. “I’m eager to get back on the job. I don’t wanna leave you, but I have to. Natalie, can you make sure he stays awake until dinner time?”
“Sure, I’ll sit with him. I just have to go get his pills, so if you can hold off your departure until then.”
“But I wanna sleep!” Liam whined. “It would be kinder to kill me now.”
Dean chuckled. “I’m tired too, but nobody is killing you. You can do this, I have faith in you. Let’s go watch one of those TV shows on that program until Natalie gets back.”
“Okay,” Liam sighed and took his plate to the sink.
Dean followed him out to the sitting room and Liam picked a TV show for them to watch while Natalie ran to the pharmacy and Sam packed everything up. Natalie was back by the time the show ended. “Okay, boys, I can take over from here. Just be careful you two.”
“Always am,” Dean gave her a little smile.
Liam got up to dig for an envelope in his bag. He pulled six hundred dollars out and handed it to Dean. “Now, give your sugar daddy a kiss,” he smirked.
Dean shook his head but leaned in to give Liam a very passionate kiss before taking the money. “I love you. Behave for Natalie, would you?”
“I’ll do my best,” Liam chuckled. “And like Natalie said, you be careful.”
Dean gave Liam one last kiss and a gentle hug before turning to leave. “I’m sure he’ll call you tomorrow or something,” Natalie placed a hand on his shoulder. “Come on, let’s watch some more TV shows. You’ll see, time will fly by and you’ll be back with them before you know it.”
Liam let himself get led back to the couch. “Time is going by really slow now.”
Natalie sat beside him. “That’s just because you’re overly tired right now. So, what are we watching?”
“While I was in prison the warden let me watch TV for a while. I found this show NCIS and it seemed kinda cool. Netflix has it, so I marked it to watch.”
“Cool. Never seen it, but might as well now.”
Liam pressed the button to start the show. “Do you like Sam?” he asked.
Natalie laughed. “Of course I like Sam. He’s a nice guy, why wouldn’t I?”
“No, I mean really like him. He admitted to liking you a lot.”
“Oh, well, I mean,” she was a bit flustered. “Sam is a very good looking guy with a lot of wonderful qualities, but I couldn’t.”
“Why? Because they hunt?”
“No,” she shook her head. “That doesn’t bother me. Thing is, I consider all three of you my friends, and I don’t have many friends. If Sam and I got serious and it ended badly… People always say they won’t choose sides, but they always do, and you and Dean would naturally choose Sam. I’d lose the three best friends I ever had.”
“I wouldn’t call us good friends. You’re always doing stuff for us, and we never do anything for you.”
Natalie kissed the side of his head. “Sweetie, your company is enough for me. Now shush and watch the show, but don’t fall asleep on me.”
Natalie watched Liam closely, shaking him awake like Dean did every time he started to doze. She made him sit in the kitchen with her while she made them turkey sandwiches for lunch. Liam ate without a fuss. He was too tired to fuss, or do much of anything for that matter.
“Okay,” Natalie said after lunch was cleaned up. “It hasn’t been twenty four hours, but close enough, so I’m going to let you sleep now.”
“Bless you,” Liam said as he put his head down on the table and closed his eyes.
“Not there, silly,” she laughed. “Go up to bed.”
Liam groaned but forced his body to get up and climb the stairs. He went into the bedroom he and Dean had shared and collapsed on the bed, not even bothering to take his clothes off. The next thing he knew he was standing in a brightly lit field. A woman approached him, and his eyes widened when he realized it was Alice. She looked just as she did when she was young and beautiful. He ran to her and embraced her tightly. “Oh, sweet girl! How is this possible?”
She smiled at him. “Uncle Liam, almost anything is possible.” She pulled back to look at him. “I really wanted to see you, but that’s not why I made the trip.”
“Oh?” he raised an eyebrow. “Is something wrong?”
“Not exactly wrong. Things are happening, Uncle Liam. I’m here to tell you that you need Daddy’s sword.”
“Why didn’t he come tell me?”
“He wanted to, but I won the coin toss,” she smirked. “He really does love and miss you. I told him about Dean, and he’s happy as long as you’re happy.”
“We’re going through a bit of a rough patch, but I am happy I think. I don’t know. I have to to get used to the hunting life again, and he’s so damn protective.”
“You’re still not listening,” she pointed out. “You’ve been lucky enough so far to not end up with Daddy and I. As much as we’d like to see you again, we want you to live a full human life. Daddy said you don’t remember, but he did get to hold you again when you died the first time.”
“No, I don’t remember anything that happened.”
“That’s because souls on earth aren’t supposed to remember. Your memory of that place was wiped, and I’d tell you all about it, but I’m afraid I can’t. All I can tell you is it’s nothing to be afraid of. Anyway, I think you’re going to have to be yourself at least one more time to get that sword from its hiding place.”
“I will,” Liam nodded. “I still love you. Tell your daddy I still love him too, and I miss him.”
“He knows,” she smiled. “But I’ll tell him. We love you too.”
Everything around him dissolved and his eyes opened. The digital clock on the nightstand said it was a little after three in the morning. He’d slept for twelve hours, but after being awake three days straight he needed it. He didn’t know if Natalie was still up, but he hoped she wasn’t.
As quietly as he could he went downstairs. All the lights were off, and human eyesight was practically useless in the dark. With what he was planning though, he didn’t dare turn on any lights. He grabbed his bag and was out the door.
Natalie’s phone rang at about eight in the morning. “Hello?” she picked up, her voice a little groggy.
“Why is Liam’s phone going straight to voicemail?” Dean asked very worried.
“What? I don’t know. Hold on.” Natalie got out of bed and slipped a robe on. She headed into Liam’s room, and he wasn’t there. She checked the bathroom before going downstairs to search for him. He was nowhere to be found.
“Just please tell me he’s all right,” Dean begged.
“Umm… I don’t know.”
“You don’t know? What do you mean you don’t know?” Dean shouted. “What’s wrong?”
“That’s just it,” she frowned. “I think I lost him.”
“You what!”
“I can’t find him anywhere. He’s gone, and his stuff is gone.”
“Son of a bitch! Okay, I really didn’t need this right now, but I’ll see if I can use his cell phone GPS to track him.”
“Good idea,” Natalie nodded. “I’m really sorry, Dean, if I would have known he’d do this I would’ve handcuffed him to the bed last night. All that was on his mind when he went to bed finally was sleep.”
“He’s just full of delightful surprises,” Dean sighed. “It’s not your fault. Alright, Sam’s got the website up, I just have to call the phone company and tell them I lost track of my pain in the ass son.”
“Okay, good luck. Bye,” Natalie hung up and lowered herself to sit at the table, now very worried herself.
Liam got out of the cab at the old cemetery in Jamaica, Vermont. He paid the driver and headed toward the back corner. From there he started towards the woods, counting each step. He made a few turns until he came to a ring of protective charms hidden in the trees. There was a pink rose bush in the center of the ring that looked kind of out of place in the middle of the woods. He knelt down on the south side of it, placing his hand on the ground. “I really hope you are happy for me. I loved you so very much, but you can’t be with me right now. One day.”
With a soft sigh he got up and moved to the north side, grabbing the shovel he’d brought with him and he started digging. The exertion hurt like hell, but Alice had thought this important enough to come to him in a dream. A few feet down the tip of the shovel found the delicate bottles of holy water. The mud made the work harder and messier, but he kept digging. Just when he thought he was about to pass out from pain the shovel struck something metal. With a little effort he managed to pull the case up. The metal box was rusted beyond recognition, but he popped it open and inside was the sword unharmed. The twelve inch silver blade with runes etched into it shined like the day he’d buried it. The bronze handle adorned with sapphires was also flawless.
He closed the case and headed back to civilization. He had to walk back to the bus station. From there he took a bus to the nearest airport so he could fly back to Memphis. It was a few hours before the next flight so after he made it through security he found himself a bite to eat.
It was almost bedtime when the cab pulled up to Natalie’s place. She was waiting for him at the door. “Liam… God, I wish I knew your middle and last names right now,” she looked furious.
“My middle name is Johnathon, and the last name I was born with is Spencer.”
“Liam Johnathon Spencer, where the hell have you been?”
Liam sighed as he entered the house and dropped his bag. “I was in Vermont.”
“We know that much,” she put her hands on her hips. “Dean tracked you through your phone. What we don’t know is what the hell possessed you to take off on me in the middle of the night without a word. We were worried sick! Sam and Dean are probably still worried sick because they don’t know you’re back. You’d better call him.”
“Right,” Liam sighed and grabbed his phone, turning it back on. He had seventy two missed calls, all from Dean. He dialed Dean’s number, and it was picked up right away. “Why the fucking hell were you in Vermont without telling anyone?” Dean came on the line.
Liam sighed. “I had to get something from Jason’s house,” he answered.
“What the hell could’ve been so important that rather than ask Natalie to take you there you had to up and disappear and scare us all half to death?”
“It’s a weapon. Look, Alice came to me in a dream and told me I would need it soon. I’m sorry I scared all of you, but I came back and I’m fine. I don’t want to tell you any more over the phone. Please, let’s not argue. I really missed you today. Why don’t you tell me about your case?”
“Okay,” Dean sighed. “We could’ve really used you on this one. It was a djinn. I guess they trap people in a dream world that they wish for and slowly drain the life out of them. It was in an old abandoned factory, and I went in alone and got caught by it. Man, I tell ya, it was a trippy dream.”
“Oh, yeah?” Liam smiled. “What did you wish for?”
“Well, first of all, you and I had an apartment together. You were a nurse, and knew nothing about vampires. We were in Lawrence, Kansas, and none of the crap that got us into hunting had ever happened. Mom was still alive, though Dad wasn’t. I don’t really know what to make of that. The biggest downside was that Sam and I, we weren’t close, like at all. I spent the first day of it just really enjoying that life. I got to spend time with my mom, had wild sex with you...”
“Hey! I thought we were both abstaining from sex for three weeks.”
“Sorry, Babe, I thought that was my new reality. Oh, and it felt so real.”
“Don’t rub it in,” Liam grumbled. “Continue with your story.”
“Okay, well, after the fantastic sex you had to go to work so I sat down and watched some TV. Then I saw the news and it was the one year anniversary of a plane crash that Sam and I stopped. That kinda jolted me back. I started doing research, and everyone I ever remember saving, they died. I knew I had to do something. I thought I was in an alternate reality so I went to hunt the djinn. It wasn’t until I reached the factory again that I realized it was a dream. Suddenly I was surrounded by everyone. Sam, you, Mom, and Sam’s girlfriend Jessica. They were begging me to stay, told me I deserved to be happy. God, it was so fucking tempting to say screw the world and stay there, but I didn’t. I killed myself in the dream to wake me up. I woke up just as Sam had come to rescue me. We killed the djinn and saved a girl. I swear, I am such a masochist.”
“No, you’re a realist. If you would’ve stayed those of us in the real world would’ve had to deal with the loss of you. That, and people would die. What you do is important. Is life really so miserable with me in it now?”
“No, the little moments with you make life tolerable. It’s just when you’re running your mouth and getting yourself brutalized, or when you completely disappear for a day I wonder why I put up with you. But then you wrap your arms around me and kiss me and I remember. You’re a giant pain in the ass, but God help me, I love you. By the way, did you eat today?”
“I had a big cinnamon roll at the air port on the way back.”
“That’s seriously all you’ve had all day?”
“At least I’m being honest.”
“True, but you’ve really gotta stop that shit. I bet you didn’t take anything for pain either today.”
“No, I didn’t.”
“Damn it, Liam! If you’re in too much pain to breathe normally you can get a chest infection. Do you really want to go back to the hospital?”
“No, I don’t want a see another hospital again for a while.”
“Then take care of yourself. Now that I know you’re okay I’m going to bed. Having some of the life drained out of me was exhausting. I love you.”
“I love you too, very much. Bye.”
Liam turned to see Natalie watching him with her arms crossed. “Am I going to have to handcuff you to the bed tonight to make sure you’re still here in the morning?”
“No,” Liam shook his head. “Look, I’m sorry, an urgent errand came up. Now I’m here for good as long as you don’t throw my ass into the street.”
“No, I wouldn’t do that,” she said as she moved to give him a gentle hug. “I care too much about you, but you know, you make it very hard on those who care about you when you pull these stunts. From now on if you need to go somewhere, even if it’s all the way to Hawaii, tell me and I’ll take you, okay?”
“Okay,” Liam nodded. “I just have one more favor to ask before I pop a pain pill and go to bed. I want to practice shooting. My aim is terrible.”
“I can arrange that. Now go to bed and get some much needed rest.”
Liam kissed her cheek before taking a pain pill and going to bed. He really hadn’t meant to scare anyone. It was that if Alice had come all the way from the other side, whatever was happening was big and very important. If Alice said he needed that sword, then he really needed that sword.
