Dean wanted to go to the Men of Letters bunker to see if they had anything on the Mark of Cain. Sam and Liam didn’t like it being on his arm any more than he did, so they didn’t argue. Sam came into the library one morning with his laptop and a cup of coffee. Dean and Liam were already at the table surrounded by books and papers. “Hey, we good?” Sam asked his brother.
“Aces,” Dean answered. “Yeah, I love the smell of parchment in the morning.”
Sam took a seat. “I mean, how much lore is even left? We've got nothing on the mark?”
Dean grumbled under his breath. “You'd think these eggheads, with all the crap they amassed over the years, would have actually collected something important.” He picked up a stack of papers. “Uh, here. He-wolf/She-Wolf: A Study in Werewolf Transgenderism. Six hundred pages, volume one. But, uh, not something important, like, I don't know, maybe the oldest symbol known to man. That's not worth our time. It's not weird enough.”
“Calm down,” Liam said as he grabbed another book. “Maybe they didn’t have any place to look for information either. And, I mean, it’s not like I’m helping you or anything, getting a headache from all this reading.”
Dean shook his head with a little smile. “At least I can count on you. And you can take a break if your eyes are bothering you.”
“What am I, chopped liver?” Sam pretended to look hurt.
Dean shot him a quick glare. “You’re here too. But uh, we were up before you were.”
They were interrupted by Sam’s phone ringing. He looked to see who it was before answering. “Jody! How's it going?”
“Oh, you know. Having the time of my life at a sheriff’s retreat in Hibbing.”
“Wow. Sounds like a blast. Uh, Dean says hi.”
“You found him? Thanks for telling me!”
“Yeah. Uh, right. Sorry about that.”
“How’s he doing?”
“Good. Yeah, you know. Uh, you know, hold on a sec, I'm gonna put you on speaker.” He pressed the speaker button and set the phone on the table.
“Hey, Jody. How's Alex holding up?” Dean asked.
“Awesome. Already head of the cheerleading squad.”
“Wow, really?” Sam was surprised and impressed.
“No. Sam, she smokes grass under the bleachers. But at least she's not luring men to their deaths. Listen, this may not be your kind of thing, but a body was found here this morning, and something had gone to chow town on it.”
“Uh, was the throat ripped out?” Sam asked.
“Worse. I'm hearing that all the flesh had been eaten down to the bones. Any ideas?”
Sam shook his head. “Yeah, I don't know, Jody. I got nothing.”
“Jody, um...We could head that way. Wouldn't be any trouble at all,” Dean offered.
“Nah, it's okay. I can handle it. I promise I'll call if it gets to be something I can't.”
“Alright. Well, uh, enjoy the retreat,” Sam teased a little.
“Screw you, Winchester.”
“Talk soon,” Sam hung up the phone.
“I’m gonna swallow a bag of knives if I got to keep looking at this stuff,” Dean tossed a paper aside. “Let's-”
“Jody said she was on top of it, Dean,” Sam cut him off.
“But she doesn’t even know what it is,” Liam pointed out. “And four heads are so much better than one.”
Sam shot Liam a look. “Not you too.”
Dean gave his brother puppy eyes. “We haven’t gotten anywhere with this in days.”
“Did Liam teach you how to do that?” Sam was starting to crumble.
“I pick things up quick.”
“We really need a break from research,” Liam added a second pair of sad eyes.
Sam let out a deep sigh. “This isn’t fair. Fine. Let’s go for a ride.”
They gathered everything up and drove to Hibbing, their first stop the morgue to look at the victims. “Isn’t this where we first met?” Liam said as they parked.
“Yeah, I think so,” Dean nodded. “Well, not here, outside of town, but...”
“You didn’t like me very much.”
“Hey, I’m a hunter, I’m not supposed to like vampires. How was I to know you’re a freak?”
Once they had a look at the bodies they drove to where the convention was being held to see Jody. “I said I could handle it,” was the first thing she said when she saw them.
“Nice to see you, too,” Dean flashed her a little disarming smile.
“Okay, I'm headed to the morgue. You want in?”
“Uh, we just came from there,” Sam told her.
“And?”
“And flesh was eaten off the second victim too.”
“Anything missing?”
“His wallet. Why?” Dean asked curiously.
“Because I think a belt was missing off the first kid.”
Sam looked a little puzzled by that. “A belt? So what? We have monsters eating and then robbing people?”
Liam shrugged. “It’s practical. What?” he got a little defensive when they gave him a strange look. “It may also be a little crass, but dead people don’t need stuff anymore.”
Dean raised an eyebrow. “You’ve stolen stuff off corpses?”
“Well, yeah… And unconscious people. Hey, the stuff you did before Natalie, don’t judge.”
Just then Sheriff Donna of all people came up to Jody. “Jodio, you take sugar?”
“No. No sugar,” she shook her head.
“Okeydokes,” Donna wandered off again.
“Jodio?” Dean was a little amused by that.
“It’s ah… Don’t ask.”
“Wait a second. Isn't that, uh, Donna?” Sam recognized her.
Dean gave a little nod. “Fat spa Donna! Right.”
“You guys know my stalker?” Jody asked.
“She nearly blew a case for us last time,” Dean explained.
Jody nodded in understanding. “Yeah, I haven't been able to shake that ray of sunshine since I got here. She's actually been pretty helpful, but, you know, it's just tough keeping her out of this nightmare stuff, you know?”
“Right. You mind distracting her while we poke around?” Sam asked.
“You show up, and now I'm a babysitter?”
“Look, she hasn't gotten mixed up with this crap yet. Let's just try to keep it that way,” Dean said.
Jody sighed. “Fine. But if she tries to show me her sticker collection, I'm out.”
Donna came back over. “Agents?” she looked like she recognized them.
“Hey. Sheriff Hanscum,” Sam gave her a small smile.
“I thought that was you! Well, ain't this a kick in the pants? What dragged you in?”
“Well, uh...” Dean tried to think of what to say. “We can't talk about it.”
“Oh. Yeah. I hear ya. Anything I can help with?”
“No,” Sam shook his head.
Jody turned to Donna. “Actually, Sheriff, I was thinking you and I could go check out the gear expo.”
Donna seemed a little confused. “What about the morgue?”
“Well, you know, like you said, animal control will handle that.”
Donna was quiet a minute. “Well, if it's cool with you, it's cool with me. Did hear they're packing some pretty serious heat in there.”
Once Donna walked off with Jody, the three men went looking for the person in charge. Dean walked up to a group of guys by the coffee. “Hey, there. Agents Criss, Frehley, and O’Malley. Looking for the sheriff of Hibbing.”
“That'd be me,” one of them answered.
“Well, we're here investigating the attacks over the last couple nights. Just wondering where you're at on that,” Sam said.
“On the, uh, animal attacks?” he seemed surprised.
“Yeah,” Sam nodded.
“You're telling me the FBI's got nothing better to do?” one of the other guys was amused.
“Well, we go where the boss tells us to,” Dean tried to remain professional sounding.
“To what, arrest a bobcat from Hibbing?” the guy joked.
“Is there a problem?” Dean was getting annoyed.
“No, there's no problem. You ain't the first feds to roll through here and come up with nothing. Sure is cute to watch you try, though.”
Dean shot him a little glare. “Oh, pal, the FBI doesn't do cute.”
“Uh, Sheriff Cuse, we are just hoping there might be some surveillance footage of the attacks. Maybe a traffic camera caught something,” Sam interrupted.
“Right. No. Sorry, I don't have a record of it. Speaking of, uh...Can you keep an eye on the expo for me, uh, deputy? I got to check in with the guys at animal control. Agents, good to meet you. Uh, help yourself to a bear claw.” The deputy gave the sheriff an odd look, but followed him out.
“Sheriff’s lying,” Liam observed. “That can’t be a good sign. The last time a law enforcement official lied I got shot.”
“Yeah, he knows more than he’s letting on,” Dean agreed.
“Alright, I'll go try and crack the police server,” Sam said. “Maybe something showed up on surveillance.”
“Yeah, maybe I'll go crack the deputy with my lovely assistant,” Dean looked to where he went.
Sam nodded. “Right, but this time, try to be a little less defensive of your pretend job.”
“You know, this badge means something.”
“I made it at Kinko's”
“Yes, you did. Be proud of that.”
Dean and Liam followed the deputy into the gear expo. “I like this room,” Liam mumbled as he looked around at all the guns.
The deputy saw them approach. “Agents. Are you looking for some teeny weeny handcuffs to slap on some paws?”
Dean tensed up a little, but in spite of that he gave the deputy a little smile. “I think we got off on the wrong foot.”
“Right. How's that, exactly?”
“Well, this investigation that my partners and I are here on, it's big. And, uh, we're looking for some local help, you know, someone who's not afraid to talk shop with the big boys back in DC. Think that might be something you'd be interested in?”
“Might be. What can I do?” the deputy perked up a little.
“Well, first of all, I'm gonna need you to be totally straight with me. Is there any footage of the attack?”
The deputy hesitated for a moment. “Sheriff Cuse changed the password on the server yesterday. It's got the live feed from the traffic camera across the street from where that first victim got attacked. When I went to go check the footage, sheriff said he'd do it himself.”
“Did he say why?”
“No. But, you know, sheriff's a straight shooter. I'm sure he had his reasons.”
“I'm sure he did. Alright, well, I appreciate the cooperation, Deputy, and, uh, when I need you, I'll come find you, okay?”
“Nice work with the cracking,” Liam mumbled to his husband as they were walking away.
“Thanks. I’ve been at this a long time, I know an attention and power hungry douche when I see one.”
“Yeah, he’s a douche all right. And don’t forget I’ve been scamming people for a lot longer than you have.”
They ran into Jody by herself at the reception desk. “Animal attack, my ass. You seen Sheriff Cuse around?” Dean asked her.
“Not since the expo,” Jody answered.
“We haven’t seen him either.”
“How you doing, kiddo?”
“Me? Fantastic. Why?”
“Word around the campfire is you went off the rez a couple months back.”
“That right? You and Sam been passing notes during class? It's nothing I can't handle.”
Liam raised an eyebrow. “So you keep saying.”
“What, you don’t believe me?”
“I don’t want to get into a fight with you right now, so let’s leave it at you have people you can talk to.”
“I make a mean bowl of chowder if you ever need to talk,” Jody added. “I know that you two have a thing, but sometimes the person you’re the closest to is the hardest one to talk to.”
“I’ll keep that in mind.” Dean turned to Sam when he came over. “You got something?”
“Uh, well, there was something. I hacked into the surveillance server, but the files had been deleted.”
Jody’s eyes narrowed at that piece of information. “I thought you said that sheriff Cuse was the only one who had access to those files.”
Just then Donna came over looking freaked. “Hi. Jody, can we talk a sec? Alone?”
“Yeah, we'll go look around,” Dean motioned for his companions to follow him.
“Can we get something to eat?” Liam asked while they were looking around. “I think I forgot breakfast.”
“You did,” Dean confirmed. “I don’t get you sometimes. How the hell do you forget to eat?”
Liam shrugged. “You know me and food. I don’t always get hungry when I should. But if you noticed, why didn’t you say something?”
“I figured one meal wouldn’t kill you. Now if you didn’t eat all day I was gonna say something. No more crap like the first year.”
Liam rolled his eyes. “I haven’t done that since.”
“Liar,” Sam called him out. “Both times we lost Dean you lost your appetite for nearly a month.”
“Grieving doesn’t count,” Liam argued.
“Yes it does,” Dean argued back. “Me going to hell was for your benefit, and to be honest, I’m still kinda pissed you nearly drank yourself to death that night.”
“But I didn’t,” Liam pointed out as he got into the backseat.
Dean got into the driver’s seat. “Yeah, lucky for all of us that passer by didn’t just leave you in that parking lot.”
They found a diner, and before they got out Sam glanced at his phone. “Hold on, I have a missed call from Jody and a voicemail.” He listened to it. “Okay, we’re gonna have to grab something to go. Sheriff Cuse is our guy, and Jody and Donna are checking out his hotel room.”
“Okay, yeah, they probably need backup,” Dean nodded and got out of the car.
They grabbed something fast and went straight to the sheriff’s hotel room. Sam jimmied open the lock, and when the door opened Jody had a machete out and Donna had her gun pointed at them. “Whoa. Got your voicemail.” Sam stepped into the room.
“Sheriff Cuse is a vampire,” Jody filled them in. “Donna saw his teeth.”
“What the cuss? A vampire?” Donna couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
Dean turned to Jody and pointed to Donna. “You want to give her the talk?”
Jody sighed, but she sat Donna down and told her everything, including who the guys really were. “Heck. Just...Heck.” Donna shook her head as they made their way to the parking lot. “Wait. So, when we were at the weight loss spa…?”
“Monsters,” Dean confirmed. “Sucking on your fat. We took care of them.”
“Ah, jeez. I knew losing ten pounds that fast was too good to be true.” She pulled out a note she had found in the hotel room. “Here. Maybe this is where sheriff...vampire went.”
It looked like an address, so Sam plugged it into his phone. “Looks like it's an old farm outside of town.”
“Could be something,” Dean took a look.
“And it's the only lead we got,” Donna pointed out.
“We?” Sam gave her a disbelieving look. “All due respect, Sheriff, but vampires are far more dangerous than the johns you throw in jail.”
“You're gonna sit this one out,” Dean told her.
“Stuff you, Dean! Or whatever your real name is,” Donna shouted at him.
“Vampires are strong and fast and they kill people,” Liam pointed out. “Even experienced people end up on the wrong side of things.”
“Hanscum's good,” Jody stuck up for her.
Dean sighed. “Alright. But you're staying back. We're taking the lead, okay?” He got into the Impala, and everyone else piled in.
They drove out to the farm, and Dean got into the trunk and started handing out machetes. “If you're gonna swing, swing hard. With vamps, head's gotta roll,” Dean told Donna when he handed her a weapon.
“Got it,” she nodded. “Wow,” she mumbled when she saw Liam pick up his large silver knife.
“Nice isn’t it?” he smiled a little. “It was a gift from an old boyfriend. He almost killed me with it the day we met. Almost.” He chuckled when he saw the look on her face. “Sweetheart, my whole life has been nothing but fucked up.”
“Thanks,” Dean looked a little hurt.
“Shut up. A sane person would’ve left you years ago.”
“That makes me feel loads better.”
Sam motioned for them to be quiet as he made his way to a window with light coming from it. Sheriff Cuse was sitting at a desk one minute, then was gone a moment later. He popped up suddenly, shouting, “Run!”
Before anyone could react several vampires came up from behind and started knocking them out. Liam managed to bury his knife into the chest of one of them, causing an unearthly scream, but he was soon outnumbered and dragged into the barn and tied up.
Dean was the last to wake up, and a young looking hippie girl smiled at him. “It's all love, pretty boy. All of you will become all of us. We won't waste one bit.”
Dean blinked to regain his senses. “Okay, Mufasa, enough with the ‘Circle of Life’ crap. You're a vampire. You're scum. End of story.” She started taking off his belt. “Yeah, I'm not in the mood.”
Jody shook her head. “Wait, it's not enough that you kill people. You've got to rob them, too?”
“We scavenge. We don't sip and go. We use every part of the buffalo. But you came in time for dinner.”
“Starr, please, let them go. I helped you out. I ditched that video of Catfish killing that man,” Sheriff Cuse pleaded with her.
Starr’s eyes narrowed at him. “We didn't want favors, Len. We wanted you.”
“What use am I now? I don't even kill people. I'm on bagged blood.”
“Uh, I beg your pardon?” Donna spoke up. “I saw you with your vampire face standing over Sheriff Goodhill.”
“No, I found her. I smelled her blood. I couldn't help my fangs. But I didn't bite.”
Dean rolled his eyes. “Well, aren't you a hero.”
Starr turned to Len. “It's your nature to eat people. A vampire who doesn't feed is like a...”
“Tiger eating salad,” a male vampire chimed in.
“We're not gonna stop, Len. We'll take down every person in your sweet little Hibbing till you come back to the nest.”
“So, what'd you do, Len? You, uh, break up Burning Man?” Sam asked.
“More like Woodstock,” Starr answered for him. “Len found me crying on the curb after my daddy kicked me out. I got in Len's van, and the rest is wavy gravy.”
“So, what, Len's like your Charlie Manson?” Jody made the comparrison.
“Charlie couldn't hold a candle to Len. He taught us everything.”
“Yeah, I'm sure it was all Kombucha and Kumbaya,” Dean said as he started working on getting free.
“Liberating is what it was. And then, one day, poof! Len's gone.”
“Till he landed his photo in the paper. Stupid,” the male vampire added.
“For running a police retreat of all things. You didn't just go straight. You became a damn cop. Now that is wild, man. Are you feeling dirty, Len? Because we're about to have ourselves a bloodbath.”
“Don't you want to know why I left?” Len asked.
“I already know why. You got boring.”
“I got a conscience. Prey that begged for their lives, it was like even if I used every part, like I taught you, I mean, it's still wrong.”
“Getting a conscious late is better than not at all I guess,” Liam commented. “Now me, I never lost my conscience. I really hated my sire. Hell, I hated the whole damn nest.”
“You’re human,” Starr snarled at him. “I can hear your heart beating.”
“I know. It’s amazing the spells you can find if you look hard enough. I bet I know things that you don’t.”
“What was that weapon you used? Whatever it was, it caused a lot of damage. I’m saving you till last so your blood can heal my brother.”
“Won’t work. If he survives the night, he’ll just have to suffer for a while. Silver and dead man’s blood, a wicked combination.”
“I'll join your bloody caravan... If it means you won't kill these people,” Len interrupted the conversation.
Starr turned back to him. “We aren't killing anyone. You are.” She pushed him toward Jody.
“Kiss my ass,” Len refused.
“We love you, brother. But we don't know who you are anymore.” Starr beheaded Len from behind. “Can't say we didn't try.”
Dean and Liam broke free at the same time, and each took out one of the vampires. Starr hissed and moved to bite Jody, but Donna beheaded her from behind. “Hakuna matata, lady.”
“Now, that's what I'm talking about,” Dean looked impressed.
They headed back out to the car. “You good?” Sam asked his brother.
“Yeah, you know, for the first time I've been back, I didn't feel like the mark was pushing me.”
Liam raised an eyebrow. “So you really haven’t been telling us everything?”
“There wasn’t that much to tell,” Dean got a little defensive. “All I know is, back there, killing those vamps... I felt like me again.”
“Alright. So, that's good, right?” Sam tried to remain positive.
“Yeah, it is,” Dean nodded.
Liam shook his head. “All I know is I don’t want to go through all of that for a second time. I barely made it through the first.”
“I know,” Dean stroked his cheek softly. “I don’t blame you for worrying. But this is a good turn of events, okay?”
“Okay,” Liam sighed softly and turned his attention to Jody and Donna. “So, your first vamp kill, how’s it feel?”
“I don’t...” Donna seemed a little unsure. “I’m still getting used to the fact that monsters exist, but Jody is gonna give me pointers.”
“That’s good,” Dean gave her a little nod of approval. “Why don’t we take you ladies back to the hotel, and then we’ll split for home.”
