As I come awake the first thing I notice is that I'm still on fire, the second is that I can hear singing, a deep bass that I can feel vibrating through me. The song is an old lullaby and I would know that voice anywhere. Ignoring the flames I hurry over to the window and look down at the base of the tree where the singer is seated.
"It has been a very long time since I have heard that song," I say once the music has ended. "You used to sing it to your sister whenever she had a nightmare, over and over until she fell back asleep. What are you doing here?" Killian stumbles to his feet, looking up at me in surprise. "I asked Mary Margaret to tell you not to come here tonight, she does not seem like the type to let such a thing slip her mind. I told her that I needed to be alone and I meant it, I have my reasons. I know that she told you I did not want company, what I cannot fathom is why you chose to ignore her. You really should go, I am planning to return to the church tomorrow at noon, I will come to see you before I go. We can talk about anything that you want to talk about for then, I am not in the mood for company. Not to mention the fact that you cannot even come in here. I may be fireproof and I may have spelled this tree house so that it is foreproof but you are not. I will tell you that he really is here, your youngest brother, I felt his mind, I just was not able to identify him. You have my apologies, I have to do them one at a time, it is just too much."
"I know," Killian sighs, his voice laden with regret but what that regret could be is beyond my comprehension. "I never should have asked you to go there, lass, I didn't think beyond needing to know if my suspicions were true. I should have known what that place would be like for you, love. Who am I kidding?" He chuckles ruefully, running his hand through his hair before reaching for a flask. "I knew what that place would be like, it's the same reason that I haven't gone there myself. I think a part of me wanted to punish you for not being there, for just disappearing, for never coming back. Then I read the book and everything changed, Henry was right about that. I never looked for you, even before the first curse hit, I just acted like you had never existed. If I had known even what I read on the first page I never would have stopped searching. I owe you more than I can ever say, more than I ever thought it was possible to owe another person. You were never even going to tell me, where you?" I shake my head mutely, unsure of what to say. "I didn't deserve you then and I definitely don't deserve you now but I have a feeling that I know where to start."
"Raven?" Mary Margaret's voice calls out, laced with a panic that immediately sets me on edge. "I know that you didn't want to be disturbed tonight but we need your help. Ahh, Killian what on earth are you doing?" Three people skid into view as she rounds on a shocked Killian. "Can't you see that the woman is on fire?" She punches him in the arm. "Why aren't you helping her?" She shoves Killian aside, trying to figure out how to get up here. "Stop standing around, all of you, come on, we have to help her, she's on fire."
"And you haven't noticed that you're the only one freaking out about it?" Killian asks dryly enough that I have to stop myself laughing. "She's fine, believe it or not this is not the first time that I've seen it happen. It won't hurt her and everything up there is protected but we aren't, it'll go out on its own. You would be best served telling us why you came running out here in the first place. I would say that we have bigger problems than a fire that isn't hurting anyone and can't spread. You came out here for a reason and you weren't looking for me which means that whatever problem you think we have is a large one. Someone at the church woke up, didn't they?" Without thinking about it Killian grabe Mary Margaret by her lapels and shakes her, trying to wring some kind of answer out of her. "You have to tell me who it is, they are my family too. Even the ones that I have never met, you have to tell me who it is, damn it Snow, I need to know. I have a right to know, you know that, don't even bother, I'll just go and get them myself, I'll bring them back."
I grab a cup from the table and throw it so that it smashes on the ground at his feet. Killian jumps back before he can go running off and before I can throw the second cup. I can tell by Mary Margaret's face that Killian is wrong, no one has woken up, that isn't what this is about. Killian's shoulders slump and the fight goes out of him so I set down the cup still in my hand. Now that I think about it I felt a power surge earlier, just before I fell asleep and like Killian I had assumed that someone had woken. It would appear that I was mistaken which could mean that a lot of people are in serious danger. That magic was raw, untrained and whoever it belongs to is clearly losing control. I drop the barriers of my mind and let my consciousness quest out in search of the power. I find the source quickly, whoever is losing control is out here somewhere. They are still in control and they will be for a while, provided they are left alone so I throw up a spell that will warn me if anyone gets too close.
"I felt the power surge," I move on from Killian's little panic attack. "I am unfamiliar with the feel of this magic so I do not know who it is coming from. I can tell you that the person is not far from here and that they are alone, as long as they remain that way everyone will be safe. Unfortunately all I can do is tell you that this person must remain isolated. There is not much else I can do while I am still on fire and unless any of you can get your hands on a dragon that is not going to change. I am talking about real dragons, not those pathetic shapeshifters you had in The Enchanted Forest. I highly doubt that you even know what I am talking about."
"What if I were to tell you that not only do I know exactly what you are talking about but that I think I can help?" Killian sounds shocked by his own words. "Over the years I've collected many treasures. There was a collection of stones that I found scattered throughout all of the worlds. I never knew what they were, lass, I just knew that I had to keep hold of them. I knew they were important but I didn't know why, love, now I do, they're dragon eggs. You told me the legends of the Riders, their traditions and honestly, it's the only thing that makes sense. Especially since one of them went missing when we hadn't put into port for a month. None of my crew would have stolen from me, I think that egg hatched and it gets better because I think I know who it hatched for. You told me the stories of the madness that comes from a Rider being seperated from their dragon."
My breath hitches in my throat and in this moment it takes everything I have to stop myself from going to him. I can tell without a shadow of a doubt that he's right. Now that I'm focusing I can feel a mind with the kind of shields that could only belong to a dragon. Tears of joy evaporate before they ever leave my eyes, not that I would be ashamed if anyone were to see. The bond between a dragon and Rider is stronger than anything else that you could even imagine. It transcends even the bond of True Love, nothing is more powerful. There were hundreds of bonded pairs once, now there is just me and my dragon Nightstar.
"Kai?" my voice cracks under the weight of my emotion, so strong that I can't stop my next words from slipping out. "I love you, with everything that I have, with everything that I am. You have no idea what this means, not really, you may have been married to a Rider but that does not mean that you have ever seen a dragon. The fact that you were able to do this is extraordinary. There were thirteen dragon eggs scattered across the mortal worlds and you found them. Someone completely untouched by draconic magic was able to do something that not even a bonded dragon and Rider could do. Do you have any idea how many years we spent searching for those eggs before you were even born?" I laugh, a sound that is strange to me because I can't remember the last time I heard genuine joy. "You beautiful, fabulous man, this should have been impossible. Now, I need you to tell me everything that you know about the man that you believe to be the Rider."
"I've actually never met him," Killian says awkwardly, rubbing at the back of his neck. "But I've heard about him and these three have all met him, he took Mary Margaret and Emma hostage once. His name is Jefferson here but he's always remembered both of the worlds. He spent some time in Wonderland, where he earned the name The Mad Hatter. It might not be easy convincing him to come out here and help us with something he doesn't understand. Especially if he knows that Regina is out here, I don't know if this is going to help anything move any faster."
"Don't worry about that," the raven haired beauty drawls. "I know where he is, I'll go and get him and I won't give him a choice in the matter, I just need to know one thing. Is this going to be dangerous?" I don't know why she's asking but I shake my head. "Then it won't take me long, I'll be back before you know it but I warn you, Jefferson won't be happy about this. You should prepare yourselves for his anger, I really hope you know what you're doing. I learned a while ago that this is not a man that you want as an enemy."
"Regina's right," Mary Margaret assures me as Regina disappears in a swirl of purple smoke. "Jefferson kidnapped Emma and I before the curse broke to fix his magic hat, we might understand now but that doesn't make him any less crazy. He might be crazy but he's smart. That's a really dangerous combination, especially if you try to make him do anything that means he'll have to leave his daughter. She hasn't even gone to school since they found each other. They spend all their time together, it's a complicated story and it's not really mine to tell. You should just be ready for him to put up a fight, he won't be happy and that's when he gets unpredictable. You should be ready for him to climb up there to get to you, this is all your plan, I'm not even sure that I understand it."
"I don't think we're supposed to understand it," David tells her. "This is what Rumplestiltskin meant when he sent us out here. He said that she could do things beyond what we could ever imagine, it sure seems like that's what she's doing right now. She's doing all of this to help Emma, we just need to trust that she can and if Killian says she can then she can. Don't look at me like that, I don't like him but he's proven that he can be trusted."
"I knew you were starting to warm up to me," Killian beams widely at the man. "If you'd started with the fact that Rumplestiltskin sent you out here we'd probably have a dragon by now. Raven may act like she hates him but she's just angry with him, they're probably two of the closest siblings you will ever meet. They should be, they're twins, why else would he have let her walk away with the dagger?" I clear my throat before he reveals my entire life story. "Right, that's not really relevant, what is relevant is that if you'd brought him with you he could have told us what to do. He could easily have handled this himself, he's just being difficult. That man just loves making everything as awkward as possible for everyone else and it's not just because he's evil. He's always been like that, even when he wasn't evil, he used to just be annoying. Hold on, I know why he isn't here, I'm pretty sure Raven fed him to a dragon once, turns out he's not a fan."
"I think you might be revealing more about people's personal lives than they might not want everyone to know," Mary Margaret points out. "The memories that you are gaining do not just belong to you. They belong to everyone that they pertain to, talking about them without permission is kind of mean. You keep saying that you want to be a better man, maybe you should stop poking fun at the secrets in other people's pasts. Raven wants people to trust her. Unfortunately for her she only has two people to vouch for her and both of you were villians, even if you have both made an effort to be better men. A lot of people in the town don't trust either of you. That makes it a whole lot harder for them to trust you, especially seeing as in their eyes she has put a whole lot of their friends into coma's. You saying everything that pops into your head really isn't going to help. You've never had much of a filter since I've known you."
