Justin and Voight trailed behind Will and Rhodes as they made their way to Erin's room, with the rest of the group lingering in the waiting area. The doctors had advised limiting the crowd in Erin’s hospital haven, particularly steering clear of an all-male entourage at this time.
Will believed it was best for only Voight and Justin to join her, considering their bond with the family and Erin's comfort with Justin—after all, he'd been her companion in the ambulance.
As Will and Rhodes halted at a door, Justin came to a standstill too. “Let’s not keep her too long; Erin needs her quiet, and the last thing we want is to add to her stress,” Rhodes cautioned, rapping gently on the door to announce their approach.
“Come in,” came April’s voice from beyond the threshold.
As Rhodes swung the door open, Justin stepped into the room, his eyes immediately drawn to Erin, nestled in bed, tightly clutching April, who gently rocked her back and forth.
“How long has this been going on?” Voight inquired, concerned gnawing at him, fearing that April might be trapped here for the entire night.
“Since Will and Rhodes took their leave,” April replied softly, glancing down at the slumbering Erin, whose breathing was beginning to find its rhythm again. “She cried herself to sleep,” she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper.
Justin nodded, an offer forming on his lips, “Would you like me to take the reins so you can tend to other things?” He approached the bed, halting as Erin stirred, yet remained lost in her sleep.
“We can give it a shot,” April said, carefully maneuvering herself, aiming to rise without disturbing Erin's fragile tranquility or the IV line delicately connected to the brunette's wrist.
A shiver of fear escaped Erin's lips as she sensed April leaving. Slowly, she cracked open an eye, finding April rising to her feet—a sight that soothed her frayed nerves as the woman tenderly tucked her in. “It’s alright, Erin,” April murmured softly.
“Voight and Justin are here,” April continued, as Erin's eyes scoured the room while her heart drummed a frantic beat. A subtle nod from Erin spoke volumes; she trusted neither Justin nor Voight to bring her harm.
Justin stepped closer until he stood by Erin's bedside, whispering, “Hey, Er,” as he opened his arms in invitation. He waited, patient as a summer breeze, until she felt at ease enough to embrace him.
With a casual lean, Erin nestled into Justin's warm sanctuary, her head resting against the steady rhythm of his heart, encircling his waist with her arms. Each beat wrapped around her like a comforting blanket, enveloping her in a cocoon of safety.
Voight lingered a few paces away, hesitant to inundate Erin with his presence, a tempest of guilt clouding his gaze, as he wrestled with the weight of not arriving sooner to fulfill his promise of rescue.
“ Hank.” Erin’s gentle voice sliced through his turbulent thoughts, her hand reaching out from behind Justin's back. Voight slowly accepted her grip, a flicker of a smile lightening his expression. “Hey there, kiddo,” he murmured.
Erin tightened her hold on Voight’s hand, a swell of guilt rising in her chest as she met the sorrow in the sergeant's eyes.
“Hank, don’t carry that burden,” she whispered, aware of how fragile he was as he neared the edge of despair, especially with no teammates around to witness his struggle.
“Erin, if only the team and I had pieced it together earlier and arrived sooner, then you wouldn’t have—” Voight began, but Erin interjected softly, “Don’t shoulder that blame, Hank.”
( Jay, and Antonio)
Jay lingered in the waiting room, time stretching endlessly since Voight and Justin had disappeared behind the door to see Erin. Memories of the shocking scene he stumbled upon at Tawny's house spiraled through his mind, his fingers weaving through his hair in frustration.
With eyes squeezed shut, the image of Henley atop his partner flashed repeatedly in his thoughts. He gritted his teeth, attempting to erase the haunting memory; he believed that had he arrived sooner, none of this would have unfolded, and Erin would have been spared her from being raped.
A gentle tap on his shoulder pulled Jay from his reverie. He looked up to find Antonio standing there, a steaming cup of coffee in hand. "We should probably think about heading home," Antonio suggested, his voice a calm anchor amidst the storm of Jay's thoughts.
“It will be a while before we get to see Erin,” he continued, Rhodes' words echoing in Jay's mind like a distant warning: “It’s going to take time for her to mend mentally.” With a slight shake of his head, Antonio added softly, “Erin will be alright; she’s safe now.”
Jay acknowledged with a nod as he accepted the steaming cup of coffee handed to him by his boyfriend. “Let’s swing by Molly’s; we could indulge in a round or two,” Antonio suggested, assisting Jay to rise from his chair.
“Sounds good, let's head out,” Jay replied, glancing around and realizing they were the last two standing. A flicker of concern crossed his face. “Al, Ruzek, and the rest have already ventured to Molly’s, waiting for us,” Antonio noted.
With a determined nod, Jay shifted his gaze toward the double doors. “Erin will be fine, Jay,” Antonio assured him softly. “It’s Erin,” he reiterated as they stepped out of the hospital, fingers intertwined—two souls ready to embrace the evening ahead.
