Bronte gets a request by a very special someone… will she be up to the expectations?
Notes:
Setting: somewhere at the beginning of episode 4.
Special guest star: Henry Quinn Goldberg!!
The sea was waiting for something that didn’t come
There’s nothing cuter than a dad who plays with his kid.
Especially if said kid has such a pretty little face like Henry and the dad in question it’s you.
Now you two are playing the battle with rolled-up newspapers, until you let Henry win, as any good father would do.
Then you come into my direction.
“Great news, there’s a rich European books collector who has found out about Mooney’s even if it has not officially reopened yet; don’t ask me how; collectors can have more tipsters than KGB!” You make me laugh. “But the most important thing he’s that he’s interested in a big purchase, I mean a huge purchase. We’re talking about very rare books, we’re talking about very expensive ones!”
“That’s great!” I cheer with you.
This doesn’t mean we won't do the re-opening. I’m planning big things for that.
I’ll leave you speechless.
“Yeah, but the problem is that he can only pay a visit here today, before going back to Europe. He’s already on his way, he’s gonna be here in ten minutes, if not sooner.”
“It means you’re going to be busy for a while, doesn’t it?” I ask you.
“Yeah, I didn’t expect that, I got the news as I was playing with Henry. Speaking of him, I had every intention to spend a whole day here with him, but now… Kate needs her time alone, for some issues with work she doesn’t want me to help her with…”
Can I rejoice for the tone you used to talk about Kate and the disappointed face you just made?
Looks like there are troubles in Paradise and it makes me feel less guilty if I'm not the cause.
“And sure, I could find a nanny, but I don’t trust them…” you go on.
“Say no more, I can look after Henry.” I offer.
“Really?” You beam.
“Of course, it’s going to be fun. I love kids… huh, don’t get me wrong, I just mean I like having kids around and playing with them and stuff.” I rush to clarify and I make you laugh.
“I could never think ill of you.” You smirk.
Are you flirting again, even now that your son is here?
“So, what do you think, bub? Would you like to spend some time with Bronte as Daddy is busy with an important meeting?” You caress your son’s head, how cute.
“Sure, she’s cool!” Henry shrugs, coming towards me.
Oh, I am cool.
“Alright. Then I’ll go to my office, waiting for my guest. Even better, I’ll go outside, waiting for him. Have fun, you two.” You greet us and walk away.
“So, what do you want to do Henry? Do you want to resume the fight?” I suggest, grabbing the rolled newspaper left on the table. “I’m a worthy opponent!”
“No, Daddy says ladies should never be harmed, not even for a game!”
Oh, is this the kind of stuff you teach to your son?
Day after day I’m more and more doubtful about the idea my friends and I have of you.
A supposed killer would never care so much about morality… right? Right.
“Well, we can play some other games. I’m an official Champion of Hide and Seek. C’mon, test me, it’s gonna take you hours to find me!” I challenge him.
“Just tell me a story!” Henry asks me.
“Well, that’s something I can easily do!” I chuckle, pointing at all the books that are surrounding us.
“No, you tell me the story!” Henry points out.
“Let me see if I got it straight: there’s like hundreds of books here, and you want me to invent a story?”
“Yes, because it’s more fun!” He giggles. “Sometimes Daddy invents very funny stories!”
Well, I’m not surprised at all.
“But I’m not your dad!”
“But Daddy says you write stories!”
Wait a minute. Do you talk with your son about me?
Why do my legs suddenly feel so weak?
“C’mon, Bronteeehh, tell me a new story!” He pleads.
How can I say no to those puppy eyes?
Of course, I can’t tell him about the oh so erotic adventures of the Huntress and the other still nameless character.
“Okay, Henry, if you want a story, you’ll get one. How about playing a little game first?”
“Which game?” He asks me, curious.
“You get to choose what the story will be about.” I reveal as I sit on a sofa.
“Oh, yeess! I like it!”
He’s practically jigging around the room.
I’m already thinking about a fantasy scenario, maybe with some elves, or something set in space, maybe a war among planets, or…
“The sea was waiting for something that didn’t come.” He interrupts all my pondering.
Huh! It does sound like a deep topic for such a young kid.
Confess, Joe. Did you use to read Dostoevsky to him when he was a baby, to get him to sleep?
“Uhm.. okay, here’s the story. The sea was waiting for something that didn’t come, so it was really bored and kept yawning…”
“How can the sea yawn?” Henry asks me, pretty amused.
“So, didn’t you ever see the sea yawning? It goes like this, it creates big waves and you can clearly see a hole in the middle, like we do with our mouth!” I pretend to explain, as he giggles madly.
“Liar!” He accuses me, laughing. “The sea doesn’t yawn!”
“Oh, so you don’t believe me, do you?” I act insulted, making him giggle even more. “Then ask your Daddy to bring you to the beach more often!”
Maybe.. with me?
But it’s not time for daydreaming, I’m in the middle of storytelling.
“Soon the sea figured out that it was not missing something, but rather someone.”
“Someone who had already swum in its water but then chose to swim away in other seas, for many reasons.”
“And whom the sea missed?”
“It was the Librarian-Fish, who did many things while he was away, but he also missed his sea and now that he had the chance, he had decided to go back, sometimes wearing a baseball fish hat, not to be seen. And he wasn’t alone, he had a pretty son he loved with all his fishy heart, Bub-Fish, he had it with his first beautiful wife, Baker-Fish.”
“But it’s Daddy, me and Mommy Love!” Henry grins and I nod.
“Bub-Fish was such a firecracker and was risking to be cast out from Fish-School,”
“Just like me!” Henry points out, amused.
“Yep, but just like you he had a good dad, listening to his troubles and helping him out, also by reading many books to him, to teach him friendship, respect and good manners, that’s why he became the most brilliant student in his class.”
“Oh, okay, I’m not so sure yet if Bub-Fish is just like me!” Henry grumbles. “
“I’m sure it will be so.” I smile at him.
“But if it’s the sea, how can the fish read books underwater?”
Such a smart little boy.
"Because they’re magic books, their pages never get wet, that’s why fishes can read them!” I make him chuckle. “However, all this book reading made the Librarian-Fish want to open his Fish-Bookstore, Fisheey’s, again, like he had done many years ago and all the fishes in the sea crowded the store happily, they had missed his oh so rare books a lot.”
“Sure, Daddy’s books are super cool!” He grins and then he sits next to me, to hear the story better.
“That’s why Bub-Fish popped into the bookstore very often and helped his Daddy choose the best books for fish-children. And then he met so many new friends and everyone lived happily ever after.”
“Wait, the story can’t be already over. Where’s Mommy Kate in it?” He frowns.
“Uh well, she’s Toss-Fish, so not only she owns the whole sea, she owns even the ocean! And she travels a lot for her job, so maybe one day she’ll get rich enough to buy another ocean!”
“Working a lot. That’s soooo Mommy Kate!” Henry chuckles. “But poor Librarian-Fish must be so alone in the bookstore if Toss-Fish is always so far…” Henry points out, sounding worried.
“Well, you must know that one night Librarian-Fish found out that someone had snuck into his bookstore.”
“Who was? A thief?” He wonders, standing all alert.
“Nope, he thought so, but then figured out it was just a young female fish, a little weird, with colourful hair, lively talkativeness and a great enthusiasm, especially for books. That’s why Librarian-Fish decided to hire her, Pixie-Fish, as his assistant in the library. And now we can really say that everyone lived happily ever after.” I conclude and Henry cheers.
Maybe it’s because of all the previous running, the games he played with you, or the story he just heard, but he yawns, crouching on the sofa, with his head on my lap.
“I’m so happy that Daddy is not alone anymore here at Mooney’s, Pixie-Fish.” My dear little smart detective murmurs to me, his eyes already closed.
Awwww. Can someone die from so much cuteness?
I stay like this for a while, then I remind myself that I’m an assistant and, even if there are fews, there are still costumes around.
That’s why, as delicate as possible, I let Henry’s head slip on the sofa, without waking him up, and I resume my job, but I keep on coming to check on him every time I can.
And after a couple of hours, as I allow myself a little break, I sit on the sofa, close to your still sleeping kid, caressing his head softly.
I hear a clicking sound behind me and when I turn I see you who just took a photo with your mobile.
“It’s such a sweet moment I just had to frame it.” You murmur, sitting close to me. “Thank you for what you did.”
“I did nothing special. He’s so lovely that maybe I have to thank you for letting me look after him.”
“I’ll tell you what, he’s not so easygoing with everyone.”
“Naaah, I don’t believe you. He’s such a sweetheart!”
“The sweetheart in question once threw a knife at his step-aunt.” You shock me with your revelation.
“Oh!” I gasp.
“Long story. Don’t ask. And she didn’t get hurt in any way… sadly.” You sigh.
Probably Henry is not the only one who wanted to throw a knife at her, whatever she did.
I’d better not ask.
“So… how did the meeting go?”
“Well, since it ended with a big purchase ending with four zeros, I’d say very good!”
“Yayy! That’s wonderful!” I congratulate you, without resisting the urge to hug you.
It feels so good to be in your arms, even if it’s just for a short time.
When we part, maybe for the movements, or for the volume of our voices, we see that Henry stirred and then he pops his lively eyes open.
“Daddy!” He immediately focalizes you, running towards you.
“Hey, Bub! Bronte was just telling me how good you’ve been.” You smile, hugging him for a longer time, but, of course, I can’t be jealous.
“Daddy, you should take me to the beach, I wanna see the waves yawning!”
From behind his nape you question me with your face, but I gesture to you I’ll explain everything to you later.
“Sure, honey, whatever you want.” You promise to him.
And as I look at this oh so tender family picture I just wonder how it would feel like to belong to it.
About Kate, it’s not that I’m picturing any violent scenario, I mean, peaceful divorces and shared custodies are something that exist.
A girl can dream, right?

THE END
Tbh, I expected that Netflix showed more scenes about Bronte interacting with Henry… and since they didn’t, I wrote a missing moment on my own.
And I enjoyed writing about Henry so much that probably I’ll do it again in some other one-shots ;)
Hope you liked the fairy tale fishy story (I just have to thank the prompt for that!) and that I did a decent job, but if no one gives me some feedback I’ll never know :/All I know for sure is that I loved working on this project, with every single one-shot.
p.s. If someone is interested, I’ll update ‘Ezra and Ella’ tomorrow
