Part Six
“Thank
you all for staying late. I know you are
all eager to hear about the incident this morning. But first President Bartlett would like to
say a few words.” CJ moved to the side
as the president took the podium.
“This
morning, my Deputy Chief of Staff, Joshua Lyman, was the victim of a hate crime
in his office. Joshua Lyman, as is all
my senior staff, is considered part of my family. Being this heinous crime was done in my
house, I take great offence to it. When
the creature that did this is found he will be prosecuted to the fullest extent
of the federal law.” With that the
president left and CJ took his place as the cameras flashed.
“As
was started earlier, Joshua Lyman was found around 6am seriously wounded in his office. He is currently listed in critical but stable
condition at Georgetown Hospital. I
will now take some questions.”
“How
can you be so sure it was a hate crime?”
“Beside
the note stapled to his skin, which professed a great love of Hitler. There was
a swastika carved into his shaved head, along with two burnt into his body.”
“What
is the extent of his injuries?”
“Besides
the burns and the cuts, there are six knife wounds. One in each hand and one in
each thigh and calf. His back was
all cut up with what we assume is a whip cord of some sort. It took 1000 stitches to close those up by
the way.”
“How
did the perpetrator get in?” Danny
asked.
Leave
it to Danny to ask the important questions, CJ thought. “From what the FBI is saying he entered the
bathroom and never left. We have a
picture of the perp we believe. The FBI
is going through their tapes. They have
seen him on three different tapes. It
seems like this was well planned. One last question.”
“You
were with the president when he visited Josh.
How is Josh doing?”
Another
good question, CJ thought. “He was
asleep most of the time. They have him
on morphine to block the pain. He was
awake for a few minutes and spoke to us.
He is doing as well as we can expect.
Tomorrow is a new day with new information. We will chat more later.” And CJ stood down.
“Marry
Me.” Sam said when he saw CJ the next
morning with a cup of coffee and a bagel.
“If
I knew it was that easy.” CJ smirked as
she handed the goods to Sam.
“Shouldn’t
we be quiet?” Danny asked.
“He
just got drugged. He’ll be out for at
least 40 minutes.” Sam explained after a
gulp of coffee.
“Bad night?” CJ
Asked.
“It
seems the antibiotics they have him on make him sick. It took him dry heaving most of the night and
popping stitches to realize that. When
he woke up he wasn’t coherent. So it was
a very long night. The doctor said they
are keephim him heavily sedated today.
They want him to rest and all these times being sick last night didn’t
help.”
“Sam,
I can sit here with him if you want to go home, shower and sleep for a
bit.” Danny said.
“I
might take you up on that. Well not
sleep, but the shower and maybe pick some things up from the office.”
“I’ll
give you a ride back.” CJ offered.
Danny
turned as he heard the door open and close.
He was surprised to see who walked in.
He quickly got up. “Donna? How are you?
Have a seat.”
“Thank you Danny. I’m okay.
How is he?”
“Sleeping. Sam said he had a bad night and they are
keeping him sedated so that he can heal properly.”
an>“an>“That’s good.”
“You sure you’re okay Donna?”
“I’m fine.”
After a few moments of uncomfortable
silence Danny spoke again. “Well, if you
don’t need anything I better get back to the White House. Sam said he’ll come by after a shower and a
stop in the office. Should I tell him
anything for you?”
“No.
I’m good. Thank you for sitting
with him for a bit. I really appreciated
it.” Donna settled in the chair and took
a good look at her boss. She instantly
felt better as she laid her hand on his arm.
This is where she needed to be right now. Everything would be better now.
