Episode 07: Escape
Skyler looked up from her computer monitor to see a large group of mostly unfamiliar people standing a few feet away. She scanned their faces, recognizing Honor and Kat. After a few moments, she scowled, her eyes narrowing.
“Long time, no see, Mulwray. What brings you here?” She took her glasses off and cleaned them on the bottom of her tank top.
“Trust me, this wasn’t my idea,” he told her.
“It was mine, Sky,” Honor said, stepping forward.
“You’re here looking for Ashlocke,” she stated, leaning back in her chair and putting her glasses back on. “Don’t bother asking how I knew. I’m too busy to go into details.” She handed her a slip of paper. “You’ll find him here. There. You have what you came for, now get lost. I have things to do.”
“Like what? Hacking into some computer or another?” Brennan mocked.
“Hardly.” She snorted. “I’m trying to get mine to interface properly with a network. There are still a few glitches in the system.” Again, she took her glasses off and turned to stare at her monitor.
Noticing that there was no keyboard, Adam looked at her. “I’ve never really understood how telecybers operate. What, exactly, do you do?”
She looked up and met his gaze. He had to look closer to make sure he was seeing things correctly. Where perfectly normal eyes had been mere seconds before were black eye shapes with what appeared to be streams of data and binary code. She blinked and turned back to the monitor.
“Right,” Kat said. “Let’s go before she gets annoyed.”
Honor handed the piece of paper to Adam and headed out the door, followed closely by Jesse. “Not a very nice person, is she?” he asked her.
She turned and gave him a questioning look. “You’re very quick to judge her. Skyler is really nice, but when she gets involved in a computer project, she has little patience for anything else. Kat took a big risk in leaving the safe house. If Serenity is missing as well, then it’s up to Kat to make sure that she eats and gets some rest.”
Jesse shook his head. “I’m sorry. I don’t mean to be like this. I’m just…edgy. I didn’t get a chance to earlier, but I feel horrible for what’s happened to you.”
She turned her whole body around. “And what could you have done?” she challenged him. “The last time I checked, you were a molecular and not a psionic.”
Remembering what she did to Brennan, he resisted his impulse to take a step towards her. “I couldn’t have seen it coming, no, but I could have come by sooner to see how you were doing.”
“You would have had no plausible reason to do so,” she told him shortly.
“Be that as it may, it’s a common courtesy. My failure to do so is unforgivable.”
She rolled her eyes. “Jesse,” she began.
“Don’t, please,” he interrupted. “Don’t say anything. I’m just here to help. I’m here as a friend, nothing more.” Mentally, he crossed his fingers, hoping that Adam was right.
Apparently he was as she relaxed a little and nodded. “Ok then. Let’s just find Claudia and get this over with.”
“That’s good enough for me,” he said smiling. Inside, he hoped it really was.
The room around her was all blurry. She blinked her eyes, trying to make the place out. She winced. Her head felt like it was going to split open at any moment. Her stomach lurched unpleasantly when she tried to sit up and the room titled. Moaning, she lay back down. Only then did it register in her mind that what she was lying down on something very soft. There was a sound that made the pain worse. Footsteps came towards her and a blurry face looked down at her. She put an arm over her eyes and mumbled for them to go away.
There was a pinch in her left arm and her vision cleared up. Gradually, the pain in her head went away. She looked at the tall man standing above her.
“What do you want?” she mumbled.
“Now what makes you think that I want anything from you?” the man asked mockingly.
“Perhaps the fact that you kidnapped me out of my own house is some indication.”
He gestured dismissively. “A minor technicality.” Sitting down beside her, he traced a finger along her jaw line. “I can certainly see why he likes you.”
She tried to move her head away from him, but failed. “What are you talking about?”
He smiled. It was a cold smile, going no further than his lips. “You will tell us what we need to know eventually, but first,” he told her as he ran his finger lower. “I want to know the exact nature of your mutation.”
She winced as his finger popped open the buttons on her shirt one by one and ran over the skin of her belly. Knowing full well what was going on, she closed her eyes and took several deep breaths. It wouldn’t be the first time she’d been tortured.
She looked over to the far end of the room and flinched when she saw the contraption they were wheeling her way. She refused to give him the satisfaction of her screams as they charged it up and touched the ends to her skin. They had it set on a very high voltage. She’d thought it was standard practice to start at a lower setting. The electrodes connected again and again in rapid succession. Shortly before she lost control, they stopped. She thought they’d finished, but the pinch of a needle told her otherwise.
As the drug ran its course in her system, she lost feeling in her legs. In a daze, she watched the man walk away. The door opened and closed. A few minutes later, it opened and closed again. Footsteps came towards her and someone sat down on the edge of the bed. She opened her eyes and looked up at the man’s face, the same one that had just left.
“What exactly did that have to do with my mutation?” she asked. His only reply was a secretive smile. She rolled her eyes and glared up at him. ”Now what?”
“Now we find out just why he likes you so very much,” he told her, running a hand roughly over one of the spots that had been touched by an electrode.
She hissed in pain and arched her back. “Now, now. There’s no need for that.” His voice took on a mocking tone as he moved her body around to make it easier to remove the remainder of her clothing. He stepped back and looked down at her. “Magnificent. Even with those marks, you have a great body.”
Try as she might, Claudia could not move. “Who are you? Who are you talking about?”
“Oh, you’ll find out soon enough,” he murmured as he ran his hand down the length of her body. “For now, I think I’d like a little bit of revenge.”
Before she had a chance to ask why he meant by that, most of his clothes were off and he was on top of her parting her legs with one knee. He caught her gaze for a moment before he went in. He was rough and unemotional, deliberately causing pain as he took his revenge on some unknown person out on her.
When he’d finished, it had been several hours since she’d woken up. A woman came in after he left and cleaned her wounds, explaining that it was no good if they got infected. She gave Claudia some clothes to put on. Once she was dressed, she gave her another shot of the paralyzing drug. She left when she was finished, leaving Claudia to lie all alone in the dark with her thoughts. She wished that she were capable of projecting her emotions over a long range. On the down side, her captors had someone who could read it, but on the plus, someone on the outside might be able to pick it up and find her.
Claudia curled up in a ball, trying to ignore the hurt in places where she’d never hurt before. She winced as one of her hands touched a large bruise on her shoulder. Her captor still hadn’t told her what he wanted or what he’d done with Honor, only that if she didn’t cooperate, they’d hurt her.
“Just when I thought my life couldn’t get any worse,” she said to herself.
Adam looked at the address hastily scrawled on the sheet of paper. It was in the most unlikely part of town. It was near the edge of the warehouse district on a street with mostly vacant townhouses. The house itself was at the far end of the street surrounded by empty units. Kat and Honor seemed to know how Skyler had come up with Ashlocke’s name and address, but weren’t telling. So far, the other members of Mutant X hadn’t pressed Brennan for more information on her, but they looked like they wanted to. Jesse looked a little more relaxed than he had earlier, but only marginally. He looked very tense, but stable.
They landed the Helix a fair distance from the house and walked towards it. Brennan and Emma distracted the guards while Kat and Shalimar snuck up from behind and took them out. Honor then lifted Brennan and Shalimar up onto the roof to look for another way in while Jesse phased the rest of them through the front door. Finding a cleverly hidden hatch, they went in, surprising a small group of mutants. They went down without much of a struggle, allowing Brennan and Shalimar to meet the others on the main level. They looked around. The place was curiously empty. Kat and Shalimar couldn’t hear any movement, so they decided to check out the basement. The padlock on the door was no trouble for Jesse to phase off. There was a light switch just inside and it was already switched on. Shalimar went down first to see if the stairs squeaked. Finding nothing unusual, she signaled for them to follow, but indicated that she heard a voice.
Downstairs, they saw three figures standing over another who was tied to a chair. Its head was bent over, obscuring the face. One of the three was demanding that she answer their question. The figure’s head lifted, showing it to be a woman. Her left cheek was bruised and there was a slowly bleeding cut on her forehead. Her lips moved as she replied, but her answer was inaudible. Whatever it was, it enraged the figures in front of her. One slapped her quite hard across the face, knocking it to one side, giving Mutant X, Kat, and Honor a good view of her face.
“Claudia,” Adam whispered hoarsely, his fists clenched with rage.
One of the figures turned and looked right at them. “It would appear that we won’t be needing her information after all, as it seems that our quarry has found us,” he said to one of the others.
The other two turned around. The one who had hit Claudia turned out to be none other than Gabriel Ashlocke himself. He took a step away from the others and crouched down beside Claudia. “You see? Like it our not, you helped us find Adam. Not in the way I’d wanted, admittedly, but he came for you.”
She looked up to see the large group in the doorway. Her eyes were void of any expression as she said, “What makes you think that I care? You claim to have done your homework, but you seem to have missed a key point. If you think that I even care about him, you’re very sadly mistaken.”
His eyes narrowed to slits. “What are you saying?”
She rolled her eyes. “And you claim to be telempathic. Alright then. I’ll spell it out for you. I hate him. Have for quite some years now.”
Surprise flickered across his face before he stood up. “Well, regardless of your feelings, I have Adam right where I want him. Him, and his precious Mutant X, too.”
“You’re missing something else, Ashlocke.” Claudia smiled, a cold, cruel smile.
“Now what?”
“Them,” she said simply, nodding off to one side. He turned, seeing Honor and Kat. “You see, I have friends, friends that don’t take too kindly to your actions.”
At that unspoken signal, Honor squinted and Ashlocke found himself floating several feet off the ground. He flailed about in a manner that would be funny under any other circumstances. While he was busy with that, Emma knocked him out with a psionic blast. The other members of Mutant X engaged the remaining two mutants. Adam went around behind the chair and untied the ropes holding Claudia.
“If you think this is going to change my opinion of you, you’re very sorely mistaken,” she informed him curtly.
“That’s not the point,” he said as he untied the last knot. “I can’t bear the thought of anyone in Ashlocke’s clutches. It doesn’t matter who they are.” With the ropes undone, he stood up and went around to the front and looked down at her. “Are you going to be ok?”
She glared up at him. “What do you think?” she snapped, trying to stand up.
Her legs had been tied for so long that she had no strength left in them. They collapsed under her. She would have fallen if it hadn’t been for Adam’s sure arms wrapped around her just under her armpits.
“I’ll always be there to catch you,” he said softly. “Physically and metaphorically.”
“It’s too late for that, Adam,” she whispered. “I’ve fallen and won’t be able to get back up again. You can’t help me. No one can.”
The other mutants lay unconscious on the floor next to Ashlocke having lost the fight. Honor and Kat walked over and wordlessly took Claudia away from Adam, helping her get upstairs. Kat eased her down onto a couch while Honor went to get a glass of water. The others joined them.
“If I know Ashlocke, there are other guards around here, possibly in the adjacent units,” Adam was saying. “We’d better get out of here before they figure out that something’s wrong.”
Claudia nodded, sipping at the water. “There are seven in the unit beside this one and another ten or so in some across the street. I’m not sure what the distribution is.”
“That helps us out a lot,” Jesse said, putting the padlock back on the door.
“Are you going to come back to Sanctuary with us or go back home?” Emma asked Claudia, Kat and Honor.
“Before you say anything, Dee, I think it might be a good idea to go with them. No, hear me out. From what I’ve heard about them, they have some top notch facilities. If not, I’d pay good money to see you try and explain this to a doctor,” Kat said with a grin.
“I can take care of myself.”
“Your right wrist is still injured,” Shalimar reminded her. “You won’t be much help to yourself. You might be able to explain that by saying you hit a wall, but those others?”
“If it’ll make you feel better, you can leave once your injuries are seen to,” Adam offered.
“We don’t have a lot of time to waste here,” Brennan said, peeking between the blinds. “It looks like the guys across the street are starting to figure out that something’s up.”
Reluctantly, Claudia nodded. “I’ll come, but I’m not staying long. Honor?”
“You know I’ll stay with you,” she told her bluntly. “You’re all I have.”
“Right. Now that that’s settled, let’s get out of here,” Kat said, opening the door. She closed it again just as quickly. “Shit. They’re coming out.”
Shalimar looked around for another way out. “Jesse, can you make us a door?”
He nodded and went to the back wall, exhaling as he phased it to allow the others to pass through before going himself. They headed for the Helix as fast as they could go. Unfortunately, they were slowed by Claudia’s injuries.
“This isn’t good,” Emma said, looking behind them.
“Adam, take Claudia and get to the Helix while we hold them off,” Honor said suddenly. “Don’t argue with me Claudia. Adam doesn’t have any powers, so wouldn’t be a lot of help if he stayed here. You can’t make it on your own. It’s best if he helps you.”
Wordlessly, Adam relieved Honor and Kat of their burden and headed off in the direction of the Helix while the others turned to fight.
