Kat had dressed and now was
packing, throwing clothes into a battered bag, a matter of minutes before she
zipped it shut. Then she stood looking at him, as if she was waiting for him to
say something.
He opened his mouth, and the words dried on his lips, he wanted to ask her to
come with him, but that was too risky, he wanted to ask her to let him take her
somewhere safe but he was hesitant, fearing that she would tell him to piss off
once more. She was still looking at him, face expressionless.
“So when are we doing this?”
“We?” he sat up, what did she mean by that.
“Nicking the painting. You are not doing it on your own; it could be a set up.
I’m coming too”
“No way” there was no hesitation; it was not going to happen. She needed to be
safe; he needed to know that she was safe.
“Too bad Peter, I am coming along, besides your plan is a bit short-sighted,
you give them what they want and they are just going to keep wanting more”
He sighed “I know” this was the part that he had not really wanted to tell her
about, no matter how he worded it, it was bound to sound cold. He went to speak
but she brushed over him..
“But if you have the painting and if you have me then we can blackmail them..”
Her eyes were glowing and she looked fierce “then we’ll see who laughs last.”
“er good plan”
She looked at him sharply “when were you going to tell me?”
“I was trying to find the right way to say it”
“I know their world Peter, it’s OK.”
He stood, coming over to pick up the bag “out the window or through the front
door?”
“I need to leave a note, you go, I will be out in a minute.”
As he clambered into the old van he wondered if the note was for Natalie or
Ryan.
*
He had taken her into the cottage through the woods, parking the van up the
road then skulking through the darkness to let her in the back door. Then it
was back to pick up the truck and to drive openly up the driveway and into the
small lane that led to the cottage. Just in case anyone was watching, they
would only see the one figure in the moonlight.
He was not really happy about her being there, well he was pleased that she
wanted to but it seemed too close, right under Beth’s nose. They had argued
most of the way, him wanting her to stay at the friend’s house where the van
was, her refusing saying that under their very noses was the best plan.
Backwards and forwards until finally she said that she did not want to be on
her own, that she was scared, scared shitless. So it was decided, but she was
not to leave the house.
The truck was parked, locked up and only then did he make his way into the
house, flicking on the light switch in the hall. She was in the kitchen,
sitting in the darkness and did not move until he came into the room and then
it was only to look at him.
“Cuppa?”
“Please”
He moved around the kitchen, putting the kettle on, taking down mugs, tea and
milk and all the while she watched him saying nothing. Finally when tea was
ready and they were both seated at the table she spoke.
“So when do we do this”
“Friday”
“And it is Thursday now” Kat looked at her watch “what time do you have to be
at work?”
“No set time, told her that I would be checking the place out so she is not
expecting me at the house” he drained his tea, putting the mug in the sink. The
situation felt strange, an abnormal relationship entering what might be
considering normal territory for most people and yet he did not know whether to
put her bag in his room or the spare room.
“I’m off to have a shower” he picked the bag up, carrying it up to the hall, leaving
both bedroom doors open before turning the light on in the bathroom, stripping
off as the shower ran and then stepping under the warm spray.

Downstairs Kat heard water running in the bathroom. She fumbled around in her
bag for her phone, fingers dancing over the keys. She had never been much for
texting but she did not want to hear Ryan demanding explanations, she would not
be going back. That was all the explaining that was needed.
