Chapter Seven
Two days ago had been a day of firsts for Sam Winchester. It was the
first time his brother had hit him, the first time his brother had spoken so
coldly towards him and the first time his brother had forced him into sex. He
understood why Dean had done it, and he didn’t blame Dean at all for hurting
him. Sam himself had been outta line. Had been selfish enough to want more when he already had all that
he needed. So Sam knew that no matter how much it had upset him or hurt
him physically, he had deserved everything Dean had done to him, and that he
had to, as Dean put it, “take his punishment like a good boy.” Then Dean would
forgive him. And things could go back to the way they were before. Everything
would be alright again.
So Sam really didn’t really understand what was going on as he sat
on the hospital bed, listening as the social worker (“You can call me Penny,
dear” she had said) tried to engage him in conversation. It had been a
mystifying couple of hours. After Rich had left, Dean too had left for work,
shutting Sam in the darkness he feared so much. But then the police had come.
They freed him from his tiny prison, telling him that he would be alright, that
he was safe. It was like they had been speaking an alien language. Because Sam
had been alright before they came, had been safe with his big brother, hadn’t
he?
He fought tooth and nail when they tried to take him from his home,
from Dean, breaking the nose of a police officer who had made the mistake of
touching him. But there had been nothing he could have done to prevent it, not
really. So he had been dragged kicking and screaming (“Hold the kid down but
don’t hurt him!” Penny had instructed), downright terrified to the hospital for
some “tests”. The portly doctor, Doctor Gresser, had
told Sam that the test would help them to help Sam. But when he stuck that thing inside of Sam, it had felt like
Dean’s cock inside of him all over again that he had a full blown panic attack
and passed out.
“Sam?”
Sam looked up from the interesting tile patterns on the floor to
look into Penny’s face. “I know you’re scared right now, but the Hendersons are really nice. And they’re excited that you’re going to be
staying with them.”
Sam was spared having to answer when Doctor Gresser
and a police officer appeared at the doorway. Excusing herself, Penny
approached the doctor, the three conversing in soft tones. Too far away to hear
their conversation, Sam tried reading their lips. The task had looked much
easier in the movies and he could only catch two words – Dean and escaped. But
those two little words made Sam’s heart soar. Because if Dean
had escaped, Dean would come for him. Dean would take him away from this
strange place, from these strange people, and look after him. Dean would take
away his hurt and fear. Sam just had to wait for him. And make sure he really listened to Dean from now on.
Until then, he just had to play along with these weirdos. With that resolution
in mind and armed with the knowledge of his brother coming for him soon, Sam
started to feel better. Not a whole lot. But still a little bit better all the
same.
Sam started when Penny turned to face him and beckoned him towards
her, saying “The doctor says you’re good to go. So let’s get you settled in to
your new home.”
“I already have a home. With Dean,” Sam said quietly.
Penny simply looked at him pityingly, ushering him out into the
hallway.
Sam followed her, suddenly feeling scared again. Dean had warned him
that something like this might happen. That if outsiders got close
to them, they would try to take Sam away from Dean. Sam wished
wholeheartedly that he had listened to his brother now. He didn’t want to go to
the Hendersons. He wanted Dean.
Eyes glancing all around in an effort to distract himself from his
fear, his gaze never lingered on anything in particular until an opened door
revealed a lone occupant lying on a bed. Sam stopped. He knew that person.
Wasn’t it C –
“Sam?” Penny had stopped as
well.
“Can I help you?”
Both Penny and her charge turned to face the new voice coming
towards them. Before Penny could speak, Sam butted in as he peered into the
hospital room “Is Coach Rowden going to be okay?”
The newcomer gave a strained smile. “Are you one of my husband’s
students?”
Sam nodded. “He takes me for gym.” He licked his lips nervously. “He
was nice to me.” Even though Sam had always wished the Coach would just leave
him alone, he couldn’t deny that the man had been exceptionally kind to him.
The smile became – if possible – even more strained. “My husband
collapsed a couple of hours ago… from exhaustion… and… a small case of amnesia.
He can’t seem to remember the past few weeks.”
“I-I h-hope he’s okay,” Sam stammered.
The woman gave a sigh. “Me too,” her eyes trailed curiously from
Penny to Sam, settling on the purpling bruise on Sam’s cheek. “Take care of
yourself.”
“You too. And your son.”
Confusion spread across the woman’s face. “My husband and I don’t
have a son.”

In his heart of hearts, Rich knew he had done the right thing. The
police, the doctor, the social worker, even his parents had all told him that
he did the right thing. His parents especially had been proud of him, raving
that he had handled himself responsibly, had noticed something outside of his
own little self-centred bubble and showed concern for others. The social worker
herself had told Rich that with Sam finally away from Dean’s influence, Sam
could get help, giving him a chance to heal and become the normal teenager he
was meant to be. But why then did he feel so ashamed that he couldn’t even go
up to Sam and wish him well when he saw him at the hospital? Why did he hide in
the shadows, watching as Sam walked him by feeling as if his heart had been
ripped out of him? Hell, why was he just sitting in his car in front of the
family house moping?
Rich sighed and summoned the strength to move, finally exiting the
Jaguar and making his way towards the house and to his waiting parents. Maybe
they would allow him some whiskey just this once. God knew he needed a drink.
It wasn’t until he was within a couple of metres to the front door –
the front door that had been left ajar
– that he realised that something was wrong. Senses tingling, his depression
and lethargy forgotten, he entered cautiously, keeping as quiet as he could. The
first thing he noticed was that the family portrait which usually hung proudly
in the front hallway had been defaced. Words written in blood now adorned the picture that had once depicted happier times
– “It takes more courage to suffer than to die.”
All thoughts of personal safety forgotten, Rich ripped through the
house, weaving and leaping over the shards of glass on the floor and the
upturned furniture, screaming at the top of his lungs. “Mum?!
Dad?!”
His heart threatening to leap out of his chest, Rich tore up the
staircase, ignoring the even greater scene of devastation around him. He turned
round the corner, about to run through the next corridor, when the scene before
him stopped him cold.
His mother and father were lying side by side on the floor in the
middle of the hallway. Or at least, what was left of them. Their eyes wide open
and faces frozen with terror, they had been cut open and their innards carelessly strewn on the crimson coated
floor around them. A single word had been carved into each of their foreheads -
“Your” on his mother, and “Fault” on his father.
Rich didn’t even scream. He fainted. [*A/N – Please, no one say Rich
is a sissy. Keep in mind, he’s already feeling emotionally drained and just
walked in on a completely macabre sight, and it was his parents!]

The Hendersons had seemed like a nice couple. They weren’t angry when Sam was too
scared to go inside when they invited him into their home, but simply told him
to come in whenever he was ready. When it looked like Sam wouldn’t be stepping
one foot in the house anytime soon, Mrs Henderson had left him a snack on the
porch, pretending she hadn’t noticed Sam hiding in the bushes. When Sam finally
did find the courage to go inside, Mr
Henderson had given him a warm smile and then sent him off to bed.
“You look like you could use some solid sleep kid,” he had said.
Yes, the Hendersons were
certainly a very nice couple. But as Dean had always told him, perceptions
could be misleading. Just because someone looked
nice, didn’t necessarily make them so. That was why it was better just to
trust Dean alone.
But as the next few days passed, Sam realised something. Living with
the Hendersons was much different from living with Dean. For one, Sam wasn’t
chained or drugged every night, so he found it very difficult to get to sleep
at times. He would spend hours on end, tossing or turning. But Mrs Henderson
had noticed the problem, buying him a CD player and several CDs she thought he
might like. She would play him a different CD each night (Apart from food or
clothes, Sam hadn’t dared touch anything else in the house) and within minutes
he would be out like a light.
Secondly, the couple treated Sam as if his opinions and feelings
actually mattered. If they were making a decision about him, they would always
consult him for his views. Admittedly, in the end, they would be forced to make
the decision without his input since Sam had been largely mute since his
arrival, but it was a far cry from Dean who would dictate and rule over every
detail of his life.
And thirdly, the couple was just unfailingly nice. On the second day over breakfast, when Sam clumbsily handled his utensils – he had never used a knife
and fork after all, since Dean was the one cutting up his food and feeding it
to him – instead of laughing at him as Sam had thoroughly expected them to do,
Mrs Henderson had simply told him to take his time while Mr Henderson told a
funny story from his youth in which his attempt to cut a particularly
rebellious piece of steak caused the entire steak to sail through the air and
hit the passing waiter.
They were also very understanding. When the
Hendersons finally noticed the protection amulet hanging around Sam’s neck,
they had sat Sam down, explaining that they were Christians, and that all
things occult deeply offended those religious beliefs. But when Sam mentioned
that his brother had given it to them, they relented, and didn’t make Sam throw
it out. So even though they had eyed the amulet apprehensively as if it would
jump out and attack them, they allowed him to keep the necklace in his room so
long as Sam didn’t wear it.
Mr Henderson spent every opportunity to bond with him – playing
games with him, watching TV with him, even playing computer games with him
(although if truth be told, Mr Henderson was a poor opponent).
And the couple were never irritated or saddened by the fact that Sam
kept flinching away if they came too close.
But even though staying with the Hendersons wasn’t exactly unpleasant, Sam wondered when he could get back to
Dean. Speaking of which, why was his brother was taking so long to get to him?
At night before he fell asleep, he would find himself pondering whether he
should leave to look for Dean. But that idea would bat itself down quickly. Sam
knew the best plan was to stay in one spot to make it easier for Dean to find
him. He just wished his brother would hurry up.

[*A/N – Did chills go down anyone’s spine to hear that the Coach
didn’t have a son? So why did he tell Sam that he did? Oh wait, I do know. But you guys will have to wait
and see. Mwhahahaha (evil laugh)]
