They sat, holding hands and staring out at the ocean. They didn't speak or move for a long time. Each lost in their own thoughts.
"What about you?" Hotch said suddenly, breaking the silence. "What about me what?" Jazzy asked. "I've practically told you my whole life story. What about you?" Jazzy shifted her position and let go of Hotch's hand. "Me? Nothing to tell really. Two older sisters, younger brother, Hippy parents." "Have you always been in a band?" "Pretty much. Off and on my whole life. I took time off for school and stuff." "What did you go to school for?" he prodded. She laughed, "I have an Undergraduate in Music Education, Master's in English Lit and a Doctorate in Jazz Studies." Hotch stared at her wide eyed, "So you're Doctor Danger?" She narrowed her eyes at him, "Don't even go there, G-man." "Okay, I won't." he laughed. "What else?" "Well I taught English Lit for a while, then I decided I was happier rockin' my bass, so I said Fuck it. Quit. Started a band and here I am." "You live here full time?" he asked looking out at the ocean. "No. We're only here one month a year. I don't really live anywhere at the moment. We just travel from gig to gig. And speaking of gigs. I need to start thinking about getting ready for mine. Hotch glanced at his watch, he hadn't realized how late it had gotten. Reluctantly he stood, he wanted to stay but he didn't know how to ask. "Well," he turned to Jazzy and held out his hand, "I guess I should be going. Thanks for taking care of me." Jazzy shook his hand, flushing a little, "It was no problem. Let me unlock your firearms for you." He followed her into the house and she silently handed over his two Glocks. She sighed as she watched him climb into the Yukon and drive away. Hotch had been driving for about two hours. He couldn't get Jazzy out of his mind. How she had looked and smelled, how much better he had felt after he told her about Foyet and Haley. How peaceful it had felt just holding her hand. He longed to press his lips against hers. He wanted to touch her and he didn't feel guilty. Hotch pulled the Yukon off to the side of the road. Wait a minute, he thought to himself, I want to have sex with her and I don't feel guilty. Hotch was a man. He had lusted after women since Haley's death, but those thought and feelings had always come hand in hand with overwhelming feelings of guilt. 'I'm an idiot' he thought as he wheeled the Yukon around, heading back to Navarre Beach. The band was into the second set when Jazzy saw him walk into the bar. She smiled to herself. She hadn't wanted to admit it, but she was hoping he'd come back. She watched as he leaned against the bar and ordered a drink. The song ended and she turned and spoke quietly to the guys in the band. Hotch ordered a soda from Crystal and looked at Jazzy up on the stage. He didn't think she's noticed him yet. He smiled when she moved to the center of the stage and began singing; There's a man who leads a life of danger To everyone he meets he stays a stranger With every move he makes another chance he takes Odds are he won't live to see tomorrow 'Guess she did see me.' he thought chuckling. He smiled at her as she walked towards him singing. Secret agent man, secret agent man They've given you a number and taken away your name ** Hotch moved to sit at an empty table. He watched and listened as Jazzy sang, danced and tore up the bass. He was relieved when he heard her call for a set break. "You came back." she said as she approached his table. Hotch nodded his head and looked around, "Yeah, I had a good time last night. This place has a great band." Jazzy laughed as she sat down next to him, "So I've heard. What are you drinking there?" she asked, indicating to his drink." "Soda." he said seriously, "I'd like to remember the last few sets this time." "Humpty Dance! Humpty Dance! Humpty Dance!" Hotch glanced around and saw five very drunk girls chanting loudly. "Humpty Dance! Humpty Dance!" "Oh God," Jazzy moaned, "Why did we ever learn that stupid assed song?" She looked at Hotch seriously, "After this, you may wish you were drunk." Hotch watched as she stood up and climbed up on her chair, she switched her head set microphone on and pulled it in front of her mouth. "Do y'all really want to hear that stupid song?" The crowd roared. "Seriously?" They roared again. "Well okay." she shouted. She glanced down at Hotch and rolled her eyes dramatically. I drink up all the Hennessey ya got on ya shelf so just let me introduce myself My name is Humpty, pronounced with an umpty.* Hotch laughed at her obvious discomfort and distaste at the song. He found it amusing that this amazing woman with a Doctorate in Jazz Studies was singing the "Humpty Dance." Hotch sat and watched her the rest of the evening. He couldn't believe how good he felt inside. They danced again to the Beatles songs, laughing and talking. At the end of the night he asked if he could drive her to the beach house. They pulled up in front of the beach house and he shut off the engine. "Do you have a place to stay?" Jazzy asked, turning to look at him. "No." he said, shaking his head. "I figured I'd just start heading back and stop somewhere along the way." "Well that's stupid." Jazzy said, reaching to open the Yukon's door. "It's two o'clock in the morning. Come on in. You can take the bed. I'll sleep on the couch again." "Are you sure?" he asked. "Of course I'm sure." she said. "Here, carry my bass for me." * "The Humpty Dance" is a 1990 hip hop song by Digital Underground ** "Secret Agent Man" is a song written by Steve Barri and P. F. Sloan.
