The sun was setting when Rick pulled up to the first gate at the prison. His heart fell when he saw that there were about one hundred walkers roaming around the outer field. He thought they got overrun and panicked.
He was taunting the walkers to come closer to him so he could jab them in the eye. That's when he noticed that these walkers were different. They didn't have arms or jaws. Abe casually strolled to the gate and pulled the chain to let their vehicles inside.
"What's going on with this?" Rick asked.
"We have new guests. They showed us how to deal with these things. When you slice off the arms and jaws they're harmless. And they hide your scent. Welcome back."
The vehicles drove up the dirt path to the inner courtyard, and Rick had everyone park facing out, just in case.
"Daryl, Jessie's waiting for you in the boiler room." Abe said with a smile. Daryl hopped out of the car and ran in to the prison to see his true love.
Allen got to his knees and extended his arms when his sons ran up to him. Carl and Judy were at the table having a snack and waved to their father. There was no ear to ear smile for the reunion, and Rick went looking for Lori…he needed to talk to her.
He walked by Andrea's empty cell and looked through the purse she still thought she needed even though the world had ended. He found the phone, and asked Carol where Lori was. "Check the guard tower." She said, barely making eye contact. He met Ty and the kids, but Michonne was asleep in her cell.
Rick introduced Hershel, Beth and Maggie to everyone before they asked to take showers and clean up. Carol showed them to the separate shower rooms and left them with towels and a change of clothes.
With his heart thundering in his chest, Rick ascended the steps to where he thought Lori was. When he opened the door he was greeted by a crisp breeze, yet the stench of rotting bodies was overwhelming.
"Hey." He said to Lori, who was sitting by herself, looking out at the field.
"Good to see you made it back." She said, without turning to look at him. "A week is a long time."
"I was hoping to talk." Rick said, as he nervously flipped Andrea's phone in his hand.
"First time for everything." She responded, as she hoped he wouldn't notice that she wiped away some tears.
"I think I fucked up."
There were a few minutes when nobody said anything. The sun had set, and they were covered in darkness. The moon was out, and it seemed as though a million stars were in the sky.
"We brought back three people…a man and his two daughters. The man is a retired vet and can take care of the animals."
"Good." Lori said, curtly.
"Shit…Lori, I need help here."
"Are you bleeding to death?" She asked, not even turning around.
"No."
"Then you don't need my help. If you need someone to help you than go to the infirmary."
"Can you give me a minute?"
"One minute out of seven long months. Fine."
"I guess I deserved that." He said, as he expelled a shaky breath. "Can you explain this to me?" His hand was shaking as he flipped through Andrea's pictures and pulled up the one of Shane and Lori kissing. His breath hitched when he looked at it closer and saw that Shane was giving her a kiss on the cheek.
She turned around just enough to take the phone from his hand. Even in the glow of the screen, he still thought she was beautiful.
"Oh my God. How'd you get this?"
"Can you tell me what you're doing?"
Lori chuffed. "This must be Andrea's phone. I remember this. We were at the quarry. I was having a really tough time. Remember when you proposed? And we'd go there after we got married? I sat in the same spot where we'd watch countless sunsets, and started crying my eyes out. Shane came over and sat with me for a few minutes, then gave me a hug and a kiss on the cheek..." Her voice tapered off, thinking of that time when everything was so fresh, especially her grief for Rick, was because she thought he was dead, not because her marriage was over.
"Wait a sec…is this why you've been so angry? You thought there was something going on between me and Shane?" The anger in her voice was rising.
"Baby, please…"
"Don't call me 'baby.' You lost that right when you called me a whore for no reason. You lost that right when you pushed your pregnant wife to the ground. That night at the CDC we had to be quiet when we made love, then twenty four hours later you push me away and you're hugging Andrea."
"Baby, please…the guy we brought back. There's something you're gonna find out. Rick looked down at his feet for several moments. "I had a girlfriend in high school." He started pacing around the platform. "We were pretty close, Lori." It was the first time she heard her name fall from his lips in weeks. "We had sex, Lori. A lot."
Thinking it was her turn to talk, Lori added, "Rick, when we met we were in college. I didn't assume you were a virgin. What does that have to do with this?" She held up the phone. "And how does that explain how you've treated me?"
"It's not that, Lori. Facing away from her, he continued. "My girlfriend back then...she got pregnant." He took a deep breath and hung his head.
"Oh." Lori said. In complete shock. "What happened?"
"Her family was deeply religious. She wanted to have the baby. My fifteen year old brain thought I could marry her and we could have a life together. But you know my parents. They wouldn't want a grandson that was part black."
The stark reality of what Rick saying clenched Lori's heart and made chills run down her spine. "You and Michonne." Lori said, as her breath got sucked out from her lungs.
"Wha…..How did you know?" Rick asked.
Lori got up and it was her chance to pace around the platform. "She's here. With her husband, Ty, and their five children. She's pregnant again. She has a nice family and a loving husband." The initial shock of finding out she had a stepson wore off, and Lori was left with white-hot rage.
"So, let me get this straight, Rick. You shove me to the ground when I'm seven months pregnant because you saw a picture of Shane giving me a kiss. I was crying for you, I was six months pregnant with our daughter, and he was my shoulder to cry on. That was it. He kissed me on the forehead and on the cheek. Take a look." She angrily forced the phone in his face. "Are we making out or is he giving me a kiss? It was a fucking kiss, Rick. I wouldn't have run away if you told me about your kid. I would have welcomed the child because you are his father. That's how much I loved you. But you treat me like shit, physically push me over and refuse to hold my hand when our daughter was born because of a kiss, yet you've been holding onto this secret since day one?"
"I messed up, Lori." Rick said, with his head down.
"Fuck you, Rick. Andrea can have you. You'd probably want her in your bed than me."
"Wait a minute," Rick said as he stood up and faced his very angry wife. "Why'd you say 'Andrea can have me? I never touched her."
"That's bullshit, Rick. The night you pushed me over she looked very comfy in your arms. You told us about Shane and walked away. I was busy with Judy and Carl…our children…so it took me a few moments to follow you. By the time I got there, Andrea was already hugging you. Is that when she showed you the picture? We've been together for a dozen years. The past few years have been rough. The past year pure shit. Do you really think I would cheat on you? I know you hate me, and I wish you would just punch me and get it over with. Your girlfriend, she's the one who said you're useless and you are responsible for everyone dying. From Amy and Jim to Jacqui...she was the one who blamed you. I told her to fuck off. She would laugh when Shane thought they would be together. She said many times that she was a rich lawyer, living in an expensive condo and that everyone in our group is beneath her. If the world didn't end, a small town cop getting together with a big city millionaire lawyer? What do you think she said about you?"
Rick rubbed his fingers through his hair as he nodded yes.
"Shit. Lori…"
"Fuck you, Rick. You put me through hell for the past seven, eight months? All because your girlfriend is a little troublemaker. I like Michonne. She's held me when I cried over you. She knew I was married to you but told me it was "a friend" of hers who got pregnant. I trusted her. Is this just all a big joke the two of you are playing? Do you want a divorce that badly? That woman, a stranger to me, comforted me more in the past week then you have in the past eight months. "
"Divorce? Lori, no, please!" Rick begged.
"What do you expect? She wants you, she can have you. Everyone has seem how you treat me. Jessie and Daryl told me I should just walk away. If we were back in the normal world I would have papers drawn up months ago. I wold have had the papers drawn up the night you called me a whore and pushed me to the ground. I'll ask Abe and Allen to help me clear out another wing, and I'll live there with the kids. You and I are through."
She started to walk towards the door that led to the cellblock's stairs, but she took five steps before Rick grabbed her arm and turned her around. As she turned her right hand came up and a loud smack echoed throughout the prison yard.
As Rick was rubbing his cheek, she said, "God damn you Rick. You had me wondering for months what I did wrong, but you never said one word. And it was all over one kiss. One harmless kiss from a man who I leaned on for emotional comfort because I thought YOU were dead. But you had a child with another woman and never told me? Do you not see the difference here?"
Rick lowered his head in shame and started crying. "I'm sorry."
"You were in the same building when our daughter was born. You we forty, maybe fifty feet away. I cried for you because I needed you. It hurt, and I needed you. Jessie was the one to hold my hand while Carol delivered our daughter. I was crying for you and you were too God damned stubborn to swallow your pride and help. You missed the birth of our daughter. And all for nothing. Andrea is a trouble maker. Have a good life with her. There has to be life outside these walls. You and blondie can have your life together and I'll be just fine on my own." She reached for her wedding and engagement rings, the ones she wore so proudly over the past dozen years and ripped them off. He watched as she bent her arm back and threw the rings into the dark, pet-walker filled field.
"No, Lori, please stay…" Rick begged.
"Fuck you, Rick. You called me a whore over a kiss. Shane mourned for you too. You ignored me over a fucking kiss."
She turned around and opened the door so hard it slammed against the railing with such force that the vibration made a window in the guard tower shatter.
Lori walked back to the cell block and saw Michonne holding Julia. She thought about all the talks they had over the past week. Her grip on Julia grew tighter as she saw Lori approach. The brunette looked at the ground when she was talking to Michonne.
"Please answer me this. You knew Rick was my husband when you told me about the baby you had to give up."
Michonne didn't verbally answer, but just nodded her head as tears were streaming down her face.
"You've held me when I cried over him."
Michonne whispered "yes."
"And you told me the story of your friend because you didn't want to just blurt out to me that you had a child with my husband. You wanted to see how I'd react."
"Yes."
To Michonne's surprise, Lori suddenly wrapped her arms around the black beauty and hugged her tightly. "We're both moms. I can't imagine having to be forced to give my child away. Rick's parents were tough as nails. I'm sorry you went through that. I can forgive you, but I can't forgive Rick. Not for keeping it a secret all this time and then how he treated me. I'm sorry that happened to you."
Julia started to fuss, until Carol came by and took her from his Michonne's arms. The two women held each other and cried. "Ty doesn't know." Michonne whispered. "I'm so sorry, Lori. We were teenagers."
"It's okay. It's okay. Rick's in the guard tower if you want to talk to him."
