Liam bolted upright in bed, taking a steadying breath as he shielded his eyes from the sunlight streaming through the window. The sudden motion woke Dean, who rubbed his eyes and placed a hand on his husband's arm. “Another one of those dreams?” Dean asked.
“Yeah,” Liam nodded. “I keep seeing Lucifer's cage. I haven't thought about all of that in years, and now, just when the Darkness is released...”
“Don't go there again,” Dean sounded a little irritated as he sat up. “You're just having some kind of repressed memory relapse. It means nothing.”
“But what if it does? In the first dream he mentioned the Darkness.”
“Yeah, and said that only we could take care of it. Look, I'm sorry these dreams are bothering you, but you have to try to put it out of your mind. Let's go get some breakfast, okay?”
They went down to the kitchen to find Sam in a defensive position like he was holding someone. “This can’t be happening,” Sam said to the empty space in front of him.
“Dude. Who you talking to?” Dean asked.
“Him,” Sam motioned to the empty space.
“Are you having a stroke? Do you smell toast?” Dean then noticed a plate of goodies on the counter. “What is all of this crap? When did you start eating this stuff? Is that marshmallows on nachos?”
“Yeah, this wasn’t me,” Sam insisted.
“Well, Natalie isn't the kind of person who makes this junk.”
“It was me. And those are delicious,” A man wearing rainbow suspenders suddenly appeared.
“Am I having a stroke too?” Liam raised an eyebrow.
“Wait a second. Can you see him?” Sam was both surprised and relieved.
“Uh huh,” Dean nodded, looking a little freaked out.
“Dean, Liam, this is, um, I think this is Sully, my friend from when I was a kid.”
“You mean Mork from Ork here is your dumbass imaginary friend Sully?” Dean was having a hard time believing it.
“Um, I’m not dumb or ass,” Sully snapped back.
“I’m gonna get my gun,” Dean started to head back to his room.
“No, please,” Sully begged. “Someone killed my friend.”
“You mean your imaginary imaginary friend?”
“First off, imaginary friend is more of a descriptive term. How you just said it? That was a little offensive, just to be honest. Secondly, we’re zanna. Me and and the victim, we’re zanna. We help kids. We’re the good guys. Sam, tell him.”
Sam ran a hand through his hair. “Yeah, okay. Um, you know what, I’m still trying to wrap my head around this whole you being real thing.”
“Yeah, no, of course. No, that’s okay. This is all really unexpected.”
“Yeah, that’s one word for it,” Dean mumbled.
Suddenly a leprechaun about waist high with a bushy red beard appeared. “You can vouch for us, can't ya Liam?” he said to the blond in a strong Irish accent.
Liam blinked, a bit shocked. “Murphy? I haven't...”
“Seen me in a very long time?” the leprechaun finished his sentence. “I know, but when you met Jack you didn't need me anymore.”
“We need your help,” Sully turned to them. “You’re hunters, that’s what you do, right? I mean, you help people.”
Dean nodded. “Yeah. People. You are not that.”
“And vampires,” Murphy pointed out.
“That was uh...” Dean searched for what to say. Then he turned to Liam. “You had an imaginary friend that was a big leprechaun?”
Liam narrowed his eyes. “Yeah, what of it? He showed up about the time Evan became interested in girls. I don't judge you.”
“Since when?”
“Shut up.”
Dean pointed to Sam and Liam. “You two. Den. Now.” As they turned to leave the zanna started to follow. Dean whirled around and pointed a finger at them. “You two stay here.” When they were in the den Dean turned to his companions. “You’re not actually buying this crap, are you?”
Sam powered up his laptop. “Dean, when I was nine years old, you know what I wanted more than anything? Marshmallow nachos.”
Dean shrugged. “Yeah, you were a weird ass kid.”
“Yeah, well, the only person I ever told about it...”
“Sully,” Dean guessed.
“And when my brother started paying less attention to me because I was older and he wanted a girlfriend, I needed someone to talk to,” Liam added. “I mean, both Sam and I had imaginary friends as kids, and now both of them are in our kitchen.”
“Look at this. Here,” Sam brought up a page. “In Romanian lore zanna are creatures who guide and protect lost children. Zanna intentionally appear as figments of a child’s imagination, allowing the child to move on with confidence once guidance is no longer necessary.”
Dean sighed. “Okay. Say the Bozos are legit. Right? Which, you know, hello crazy town, but okay. How is this our problem?”
“Because someone’s dead,” Sam pointed out.
“No, some thing is dead. A fairy godmother getting capped? That ain’t our beat.”
“Yes, I know that, Dean, but...”
“But what?”
“But as messed up and insane as this sounds, Sully helped me.”
“And Murphy helped me,” Liam said. “Personally, I think it's a sad commentary on your childhood that you didn't have an imaginary friend.”
“And there you go with the judging,” Dean crossed his arms. “Yeah, I wasn't like the two of you. I had to grow up quick for my family. It was what it was. Your brother probably didn't have one either.”
“Actually, he did. He told me about Donny once when he caught me talking to mine. Showed up before I was born because Evan was lonely as an only child. Stayed for a little while after I was born to help with raising a baby at the ripe old age of ten.”
“Okay, so maybe I'm the only one. That still doesn't mean we have to do anything.”
“Yeah, it does,” Liam argued. “Sam just read the lore to you. Zanna help kids. They're good. And now apparently something is after them. We protect good.”
Dean looked back and forth between his companions. “I guess it's two against one. Fine.” He marched back to the kitchen with his companions following him. “Okay, we're in,” he said to the two zanna patiently waiting.
“Bless ya,” Murphy grinned. “I wasn't worried since Liam always was a persuasive one.”
“Yeah, he gets his way more often than not,” Dean admitted.
“I'm gonna get back to my duties,” Murphy said. “I was only here to help, and I couldn't pass up the chance to see my Liam after all this time. Some kids, they stick with you.”
“That's very true,” Sully agreed.
“But before I go, you're getting sick, lad. You're cheeks are a bit flushed,” Murphy looked to Liam. “Take care of yourself.” With a little nod he disappeared.
“Are you getting sick?” Dean asked.
“What? No!” Liam denied it. “My throat is a little sore, but if anything it's just a cold.”
“There's nothing just about a cold with you, we all know that,” Dean was concerned.
“Yeah, well, other than a scratchy throat I feel fine, so drop it. You're not leaving me here over the sniffles.”
Rather than argue they packed to leave. Sully told Dean where they needed to go, and hours later they pulled up to a house. Sully was frowning as he looked at it through the window from the backseat. “That’s the place. It’s a horror show in there.”
“You mean you’ve been inside?” Sam asked.
“Last night. I’m in management now, so I don’t get out in the field much. I just came to see Sparkle.”
“Sparkle?” Dean raised an eyebrow at the name.
“Yeah. I show up and, I mean the place was bananas. Kid had called the cops, mom’s freaking out, and Sparkle... Sam, it was horrible.”
“Okay, so according to zanna rules, the kid is the only witness, right?” Dean asked.
“Yeah. Poor thing. I’ll meet you inside.” Sully vanished.
Dean turned to his brother. “All right, what are you thinking?”
“I doubt any rational adult would believe that the FBI was called over the murder of an imaginary friend,” Liam pointed out.
“Yeah, this one is gonna be tricky,” Sam agreed. “But I might have an idea.”
An hour later they came back wearing knit sweaters over their dress shirts and ties. “Good. The Bert and Ernie pretext. Awesome,” Dean did not look thrilled.
“Dude, you didn’t have to come,” Sam shot back at him.
“You know, this whole imaginary friend thing was dumb then and it’s dumb now.”
“Yeah, you’ve made that pretty clear.”
“You didn’t think to tell me he was real?”
“Well, Dean, I didn’t think he was. You saw the lore book too, I mean, maybe when I was nine years old I thought he was real, but I grew up. Or grew out of it. Whatever. I left it.”
“And what did you need Drop Dead Fred for in the first place?”
“I was kind of a lonely kid, Dean.”
“You weren’t lonely. You had me!”
“Weren't you always hunting or trying to get girls?” Liam asked.
“Whose side are you on?” Dean got a little defensive.
“I'm not on any side. Just cut us lonely little brothers some slack. I'm not saying you were a bad brother. Mine wasn't either. You and Evan were teenagers.”
They knocked on the door and Ms. Berman answered. “Ms. Berman, I’m Dr. Strummer. These are my associates,” Sam introduced them. “We are trauma counselors with child services. We’re here to follow up on a police report filed yesterday?”
“Oh, that was... Come in. My daughter Maddie, she’s the one who called. Uh, she has an active imagination. She made up this unicorn man, Sparkle. But, um, she thinks he’s dead. In her room.”
“So, Sparkle is a unicorn and also a man?” Dean tried to wrap his head around that.
“Yeah.”
“So, a manicorn.”
“I guess?”
“May we...?” Sam motioned to the room where the little girl was sitting.
“Yes, please. Thank you.”
They walked over to her. She was sitting at a table looking very sad. Sam knelt down beside her. “Hey, Maddie. My partners and I would like to ask you about last night. About Sparkle? Your mom says you don’t want to go back into your room? How come?”
“All the blood,” she answered.
They asked Ms. Berman to show them Maddie's room. She walked them upstairs. “This has been her room since she was a baby. She’s loved this room. And then, last night...”
“Do you mind if we take a look around?” Sam asked.
She nodded. “I'll be right back.”
Dean looked around at the perfectly fine room. “Alright, what’s the problem?”
Sully suddenly appeared again. “I told you it was horrible.”
“You mind enlightening us?”
“If I show you all we can see, you can’t tell a soul.”
“Yeah, because grown men talking about imaginary friends seems so normal and sane,” Dean grumbled.
Sully touched their foreheads and then they could see a man with a unicorn horn lying dead on the bean bag chair. He'd been stabbed and blood was everywhere. Dean blinked a few times. “Oh yeah. That kid is gonna need all the shrinks.”
“I wouldn't wanna sleep in here either,” Liam commented.
“Wait a second. So his blood is glittery?” Sam found that strange.
Sully nodded. “Even when he’s dead, Sparkle can’t stop shining. Who would do this?”
“Sully, can zanna see other zanna?”
“Of course. But it’s not what you’re thinking. A zanna could never do this.”
Ms Berman came back in. “Nothing to see, right? I was always under the impression that it was a parent’s job to let a child be a child as long as possible. Maybe we let her get too carried away. I don’t know. I mean...” She picked up a blood soaked teddy bear. “An imaginary friend named Sparkle. What’s cuter than that?” She put her bloody hand on her face and sighed. “I’m sorry. I’m being as dramatic as my daughter now.”
“Um, it’s on her face. Sam, it’s on her face!” Sully cried at the blood now smeared all over the woman's face.
“Just tell me, how do we get our girl back?”
“You know what, is there a spare bedroom?” Sam tried to think of something. “Maybe Maddie can sleep there, that should help.”
Liam nodded. “Yeah, I'm sure after a little while she'll get over Sparkle if she isn't confronted by memories of him every night.”
“And a hot shower. That does wonders,” Dean added.
“Real deep scrub. Purify,” Sam nodded.
“For Maddie?”
“The whole family. Yeah, just get the whole gang in there. You know, the family that showers together...” Dean didn't know how to finish that sentence.
“Uh, what my associate is trying to say is...” Liam tried to think of something. “Since uh, Maddie believes that there is blood all over the room, maybe it would even help to clean it, and then yourselves.”
Sam handed her a card. “You know what, why don’t you start there? You can contact our office for more guidance if you like.”
“Okay, so what do we got?” Dean asked as they left the house and headed for the car.
“We know that someone stabbed a creature that only little kids can see,” Liam said as he got into the backseat. “Maybe we have an angry little kid that's gonna grow up to be a serial killer? That is gonna get taken care of, right?” the blond turned to Sully. “Sparkle isn't just gonna lie there?”
“I'll make arrangements,” Sully assured him.
In the morning after breakfast Sully appeared again. He was worried about another zanna. Dean looked over to Liam, who, as predicted, wasn't feeling well. “Okay, you grab yourself a cup of tea and get some rest. No sense in taking any chances.”
“Dean,” Liam sighed. “All I need is a quick trip to the drugstore for a decongestant. Quit worrying so much.”
“You and colds. Not a good combination.”
“I'm not going to lie around and breathe through one nostril.”
In the end Dean gave in and with Sully they drove to another house. Sully got out when they pulled up, looking rather worried. “Nicky didn’t check in with the home office last night. This can’t be happening.”
“You gazoos can talk to each other?” Dean asked.
“Us zanna share a telepathic link.” The guys started heading for the front door. “She wouldn’t be in there.”
They followed Sully to the back yard where they found Nicky dead in the pool. “A freaking mermaid?” Dean couldn't believe it.
“It's a bloodbath,” Sully was near tears.
“Alright, just let it out,” Dean tried to be supportive.
“No. I gotta stay strong for Sam.”
“Looks like more stabbing,” Sam examined the body.
“Okay, Sully, is there anybody that would want to hurt, uh, Nicky?” Dean asked.
“No. Uh...”
“What?”
“Oh well, I mean, her boyfriend’s a little clingy. But he’s one of my best friends. Guys, Weems would never hurt Nicky. I mean, he loved her too much.”
“Well, too much ain’t good. So let’s go talk to the mermaid’s boyfriend. Because apparently, imaginary friends have boyfriends now.”
“Don't we need to do something with the body?” Liam asked. “I mean, we don't want another traumatized kid, do we?”
“Alright, what do you wanna do? Find a giant toilet and flush it?” That earned him a nasty look from all of his companions. “You’re right. I was... What would you like us to do?”
“I think I saw some shovels back there,” Sully said.
“Okay...” Dean sighed. “Well, Totoro really cares for you, huh?” Dean said to his brother who looked lost in thought. When they got the shovels Dean and Liam started digging a hole. Sam just sat in the grass. “Hey, slacker. Are we burying Ariel by ourselves here or what?” Dean snapped at him after a while.
“No, yeah, of course,” Sam got up and grabbed a shovel. “How you holding up, Sully?”
“I’m fine. How are you, Sam?”
“Aces.”
As soon as the mermaid was buried Sully took them to see Weems. It was dark when they pulled up to the house, and they found bloody and torn bed sheets hanging on a clothesline. They followed the blood trail to a shed. A guy in a skull t-shirt was in the corner, bleeding from his lower abdomen. “Weems, are you okay?” Sully rushed over to him.
“Yeah. It went right through my love handle. My fat saved me. Can you believe that?”
“Fat is the best.”
“Yeah, well, the mermaid wasn’t so lucky,” Dean said.
Weems blinked at the hunters. “Is he talking to me? Who are these guys?”
“They're friends,” Sully told him.
“Hey Weems, when was the last time you saw Nicky the mermaid?” Dean asked. “God, I can’t believe I just said that.”
“Yesterday. Why? What happened to Nicky?”
“She was murdered,” Sam gave him the bad news.
“What?”
“Weems, I am so sorry,” Sully frowned.
“No! She was my girl!”
“Sparkle's gone too.”
“Not Sparkle! Dude, that’s like our whole posse!”
“I know, right? But hey, you’re okay. You’re okay.”
Liam took out a tissue and blew his nose very loudly. “That's kinda why we're here. To figure out what the deal is before you're all goners.”
“So you’re all pals. Is there anybody who would have beef with the bunch of you?” Dean asked.
“I’ve never seen her before in my life,” Weems answered.
“Wait a second, you saw somebody?” Sam asked.
“Some chick. After she shivved me, she took off in an old VW Bug.”
“So this is a good thing, right?” Sam turned to his companions.
“Uh, no, this is a great thing,” Dean seemed pleased. “I mean, a manicorn, a freaking mermaid? What am I supposed to do with that? But a chick in a car? That’s terra firma. I’m home.”
Sam nodded. “Alright, you guys go. I’ll cover these two.”
Before Dean left he turned to Weems. “I gotta ask. Hey, uh, acid wash. What’s so special about you?”
“Mermaids dig me?”
“No, I mean, why do kids like you?”
“Oh. I play air guitar.”
Dean raised an eyebrow at that. “You play air guitar? Sam plays air guitar. I can play air guitar.”
Weems got up and showed them what he could do. The sound of a guitar could be heard as he enthusiastically strummed the imaginary instrument until he grabbed his wounded side and fell back down. “It's okay. Good solo,” Sully smiled at him.
“Well, he’s no Clapton,” Dean mumbled as he turned to leave. “Uh, maybe you should stay here too,” he said when Liam started to follow him.
“I'm stuffed up, I wasn't stabbed,” the blond argued.
Dean rolled his eyes. “You are so fucking stubborn. Come on. I'm not playing nursemaid when it moves into your lungs.”
They found the car Weems described parked a few miles down the road. They got out and were looking around when Dean was suddenly knocked out from behind. Liam whirled around to see a woman in a hoodie with an interesting looking knife. “Just sit down by your friend and nobody gets hurt,” she threatened.
Liam snorted. “They always underestimate the short one.” He lunged at her and they struggled for the blade. Then Liam drove the tip into her thigh and she fell. The blond stood over her holding the knife. “Now, why the hell are you going after zanna?”
She glared up at him. “I think we have a mutual imaginary friend. You know Sully?”
“I met him yesterday.”
“What's going on?” Dean came to and was a little confused for a moment.
“I was just about to tell you why it's a good thing you didn't come alone,” Liam was a little smug. “Get Sam and Sully over here. We're gonna find out why she has a beef with him.”
It didn't take long for Sam to show up with Sully. “Reese?” Sully recognized her.
“Hey, stranger,” she replied from the ground where she was tied up.
“What do you want with Sully?” Sam asked her.
“Ask him. He’s the one who killed my sister.”
“It was an accident!” Sully cried.
“What?” Sam looked to Sully for an explanation.
“Reese and her twin sister, they were my first kids after I thought I screwed things up with you.”
“So this is his fault?” Reese glared at Sam.
“No, Reese, I’m the one that bungled it. It was me. I should never have let her chase me into the street. We were just playing tag. I don’t know why I didn’t see the car coming. That’s why I never went back in the field, that’s why I never found another kid. I was too scared I’d hurt them.”
“Do you know how bad you messed me up? Audrey’s dead because of the invisible man. Try telling that to about ten different kiddie shrinks! I always wondered if Sully was real, so I got obsessed with folklore. I studied abroad in Romania, and then I found out he’s a zanna.”
“Yes, and zanna are good,” Sam said.
“That’s what the witch tried to tell me too.”
“The witch?”
“She sold me a spell so that I’d be able to see these freaks. She gave me the dagger too. Finally, I could save other kids from these monsters.”
“So you killed my friends just to get to me?” that made Sully sad.
“And I would have done it sooner if these guys hadn’t shown up.”
“Why didn’t you call? I would’ve come.”
“Honestly, I kinda liked watching you suffer. You weren’t just Audrey’s best friend, you were mine too. And after she died, Sully, I never needed you more.”
“I panicked when Audrey died. And I left you to deal with the pain, because I couldn’t handle being the one that caused it.”
“I’m still mad. I can’t stop it. I’m just still so mad!”
“Trust me. Revenge? Ain’t gonna make you feel better,” Dean spoke up. “Listen, I’ve seen more than my share of monsters. And I mean real monsters, bad. These guys? These are Sesame Street Mother Teresas. But when I wasn’t there for my little brother, Sully was. Now, look, I’m not saying that he didn’t make a mistake, but you know that there is not a monstrous bone in his body.”
“Listen to Dean,” Liam agreed. “I'm sorry you lost your sister. I was a wreck when my brother died, so I know how bad that hurts. I mean, I wasn't a little kid when it happened, but... Point being, crap happens. What I went through as a child, that makes your tragedy look like picnic. You can't even imagine. And apparently I had a zanna that helped me a lot. What happened to your sister was an accident. I've only known Sully like a day, but I seriously doubt he'd hurt anyone on purpose.”
Reese started crying and Sully knelt down by her. “Oh Reesy, I’m so sorry.” He untied her and she hugged him.
They saw Reese off and Sully looked to Sam kinda sad. “Well, it is that time again.”
“You, um, you’ll look in on Reese?” Dean asked him.
“Don’t worry, I will be checking in. And Dean, thank you for looking out for Sam. You are not a germ at all.”
“Thanks? You know, you’re not gonna get me to admit that you’re not the weirdest thing out there, but you’re a good weird. And uh, if you see Murphy again, tell him I said thanks for looking over Liam when he needed it. The stubborn little ass came into my life when I needed him.”
“I'll tell him,” Sully smiled and turned to Sam. “Good luck, buddy.” Sully disappeared.
“That was kind of a weird case,” Liam said before he started having a coughing fit.
Dean frowned. “Now see, it's going to your lungs like it always does. The case is over, so will you do me the favor of resting?”
“Okay, I'll take some cough syrup and sleep on the ride home, mother,”
“Don't get smart with me. I wouldn't have to be on your ass if you took better care of yourself.”
Liam kissed Dean on the cheek and moved to get in the car. “You worry a little too much. I'll be fine.”
“You do kind of worry more than you have to,” Sam agreed.
Dean sighed as he got into the car. “Liam, the times you've gotten really sick, it scared the crap out of me. Have you forgotten that a mere day after you turned human you got sick and died?”
“And then you did something stupid,” Liam said from his spot curled up in the backseat. “I remember.”
“I did something stupid because that nearly destroyed me. And I've grown a lot more attached to you over the years. I love having you in my life, but there's a downside. If something ever happened to you...”
“I know,” Liam reached up to touch his arm for a moment. “But you gotta loosen up a little.”
