Rory wasn’t sure what to think about the evening she had just had. Dean had left his wife. Left her, for…. her. A warm smile overcame her and she felt giddy. There was this new side of Dean that she had never seen before. She was certain that she liked it, but there were times when he didn’t even seem like her Dean anymore. Those were the times where he was a little scary. But this was Dean that she was talking about! There wasn’t anyone else that she would be safer with. With this, Jess crossed her mind, and she paused her walking. How did Jess fit into this scenario? Dean and Jess hate each other, Jess wasn’t even supposed to be in Stars Hollow! Unless he had come back, had he come back for her and Dean found out? Stopped him somehow? She shook her head, she was being crazy. But Deans words on the porch rang in her head,
“Hey,” he had said sweetly, pulling her into his arms. “Please don’t tell anyone about Jess being here. He doesn’t want people knowing he’s here.”
“How come?”
“I dunno know. He came to me and asked if I knew anyone with a spare couch that would put him up. I think he and Luke had a fight or something. Since I had this room all to myself I figured he could stay here. As a peace offering to you. After he got here he noticed my stuff, turns out he is totally into all this. Who knew! So we thought we would try it out together. Look, all I know is, he doesn’t want anyone to know anything about it yet.”
“If they had a fight Luke could be worried about him Dean! We have to tell him that he’s safe at least!”
Dean paused for a moment, hiding his head from her. Then he said softly, “Luke thinks Jess ran away to New York again. He said he left a note for him.”
“Oh …”
“Yeah, I’m just trying to do right by the guy.” he said, running his fingers through his hair, “Hey, come here” and he pulled her into a kiss. A kiss that knocked her socks off and made her want to come back in. She pushed against him, closing her eyes and explored his mouth with her tongue. Finally he pulled away and said “You need to get home. I love you.”
Rory kept her eyes closed but smiled, “I love you too.” She knew he was keeping an eye on her as she walked down the street. She saw him turn back into the house as she rounded the corner.
She smiled again thinking about what he had said. He loved her, no matter what else was going on, he loved her.
“You fucking bitch!” she heard behind her. Rory turned around and saw a blonde woman running toward her followed by an older blonde woman chasing after her.
“Oh crap, Lindsay” Rory whispered.
“How dare you!” she shouted as she got close to Rory. “How dare you steal him!”
Rory started to panic, how did she know that she was with Dean? Did he tell her? That seemed crazy to her. “Wha- what are you talking about” she finally got out.
“Oh you know exactly what I am talking about. I have been driving all over Stars Hollow trying to figure out where Dean went and then when I finally find him, YOU are all over him! You bitch!” Lindsay swung at Rory who jumped back avoiding the punch but falling over in the process shrieking in pain and fear. The ground scraped her back as she crawled on her back trying to get away from Lindsay.
“Lindsay I’m sorry, I really am. I love him, I’m so sorry.” At this Lindsay froze, giving Rory a chance to stand up and back away farther. Lindsay’s eyes were locked on her neck, boring into Rory’s collar. Shrinking into herself, Lindsay stepped back. “He...he didn’t.” She pained. Her eyes darting from side to side as if she just realized where she was and what she was doing. She backed up into the arms of her mother and walked away.
“Lindsay!” she called, but they ignored her leaving. Rory stood there and watched the women walk back to their car and drive away. Rory began walking again, shaken from the interaction. She was halfway through the town square when she saw her mom’s jeep driving down the road. She waved to her mom to get her attention. The jeep screeched to a halt, with her mom jumping out.Rory knew that she was in for another battle when she saw her mom. Lorelai’s eyes were full of fury as she stomped across the short space to Rory.
“Where the hell have you been?” she accused as she got close. “Do you know how worried I was? You’ve avoided my phone calls all day while I was at the inn, and then I get home and you are nowhere to be found? Do you realize I almost called the cops?!” Rory shrunk further at these words, she had never meant for her mom to feel this way.
“Mom I’m sorry, I lost track of time.”
“You lost track of time?! Seriously? That’s your excuse! Come on Rory, even you have to know that’s the oldest one in the book.”
Rory’s lip began to trimble “I was with Dean, we really did lose track of time. I didn’t realize how much time had passed.”
“You still went to Dean? Did you learn nothing last night? He married Rory! Married!”
“He left her.” she whispered. Lorelai stopped and her body seemed to shrink some.
“He what?”
“He left her this morning and got a new apartment. That’s where I was.” Tears were streaming down her face. “I really am sorry mom. When I saw what time it was I left right then! Then Lindsay found me and-”
“Wait what?” Lorelai interrupted. “What do you mean she found you?”
“She had been out trying to find Dean to try and reconcile or something, that’s when she saw him kissing me as I left. She chased me down the street yelling at me.” She grabbed her arm that still hurt from landing on it. “Mom” she fell into Lorelai’s open arms. “I don’t know what to do. I love him.”
“Shhh,” her mom whispered as she petted her head, “shh I know….. I know.”
When the girls got home Rory went straight to her room and shut the door. She couldn’t handle being around anyone right now. Going from such a high from Dean’s house to crashing on the ground with Lindsay screaming at her had been too much for her. She crawled into bed and cried.
Rory eventually looked at the clock, it was 11:30. “Crap!” she cried, “I was supposed to text Dean when I got home. He’s probably worried.” She pulled her phone out of her purse. 4 missed calls and 3 text messages “Shit”
You home yet? 10:14pm
Hey, did you get caught up? 10:33pm
Rory where are you? Why aren’t you answering? 11:07pm
She typed as fast as she could.
Hey I’m home, sorry 11:31pm
You’re just now getting home? What the hell happened? 11:31pm
“Oh great, he instantly responded. That means he was probably sitting by the phone.”
I’ve been home for a few minutes, I’m sorry I forgot to text. 11:32pm
Time passed as singular grains of sand. Why wasn’t he responding?? She flipped it open before it had finished the first vibrate.
You will be sorry. When you are given a command, I expect it to be followed through. 11:35pm
Her heart sank even further. She had let him down. She felt another text come in.
Now, tell me why it took you an hour to walk 4 blocks. 11:36pm
Rory hesitated, she wasn’t sure if she wanted to tell him about Lindsay or not. It seemed pretty obvious that he was trying to shut the door on her and everything about her. But he needed her honesty. Mistrust was one of the things that had torn them apart originally. Trembling she typed,
Lindsay 11:37pm
Her phone was ringing, she didn’t even look at the caller id before answering “H-hey” she stammered.
“What the hell did she do?” He snarled, fury dripping from each word.
Rory wheezed as she began to cry again reliving it all “Apparently she has been driving all over town trying to find you.” Silence “She saw me leaving your place and… and our kiss..” she trailed off allowing Dean to fill in the blanks. She could hear him roaring a yell over the phone.
“What. Did. She. Do.” he spat.
“Dean please calm down, she was upset! She saw her husband who had just left her kissing another woman! She-”
“WHAT DID SHE DO?!”
“She chased me down okay! She chased me down and screamed at me and I fell down and hurt my arm.”
Dean’s tone instantly lessened to concern, “You’re hurt?”
“It’s not bad really-”
“You are hurt? Yes or no.”
“It’s a scratch. And it’s not even her fault, she didn’t touch me, I just tripped over my feet.”
“I’m coming over.” and he hung up the phone. Rory was in shock. She didn’t know what to do. It was almost midnight! And a boy wanted to come over. She threw her eyes untoward her mom's room, she knew she and her mom had a close relationship but she didn’t see that one flying well. But she also knew that Dean would not be turned away. So she texted:
Let me know when you are here. You need to come in the window. 11:55pm
She paced the room waiting for his arrival. She noticed her finger was caught on her nightgown that she had changed into. She had been twirling her finger in the fabric creating a knot of fabric and let it go. Buzz buzz
I’m here 12:03am
Rory lifted her blind and saw him standing there, he looked massive compared to the window. She unlatched it and stepped back. Dean easily slipped into the room and shut the window behind him.
“Let me see,” he uttered. Rory held out her arm.
“See, it’s really nothing”
Dean took her into a loving embrace “When will you learn that there isn’t anything you do that is nothing to me?” Rory smiled and he pulled back to look at her arm better. “It looks okay, should heal up in a day or two.”
Rory rolled her eyes “Yeah I know, that’s what I tried to tell you.” Dean glanced up to her with a deathly glare. “I’m sorry Sir.”
“You are my world now Rory, don’t you understand that? I lost you once and it killed me. I hated seeing you with him. I turned to Lindsay as an escape. I fooled myself into saying I loved her.” He paused contemplating “Do you know what was going through my mind at my bachelor party?”
Taken back Rory said, “What?”
“You” he smiled “You were the only thing I could think about. I missed you, I tried to drink you away but it only made you more prevalent in my mind. Luke saw it and let me crash in his apartment so I wouldn’t do anything stupid. I know he was trying to protect me but I wish he hadn’t. Maybe if I had come to you then things would have been different.”
Rory looked away remembering that weekend “Luke, Luke came to me that morning.”
“What?”
“He came to me and told me not to go to the wedding.” She turned back to him. “He must have thought you would have left her at the altar if I was there.”
“I would have”
“What?”
“If you had wanted me I would have.”
Rory pulled him into her arms and caressed his body. Lifting her head he met her lips firmly, again claiming what was his; time stood still. When he pulled back she smiled.
“I love you” she murmured.
“I love you too.” They sat in a loving silence, soaking each other in for some time. Rory felt Dean brush against her new collar causing a shiver to run through her.
“Um, Sir. There was something else that happened. That happened with Lindsay.” Dean’s body shifted at the news, and looked at her concerned. “She only stopped when she saw this,” she rested her fingers on the metal necklace. “Why did it upset her so much?”
Dean ran his fingers through his hair. This was obviously not a conversation he wanted to have. “She, ugh! I can’t believe she ruined this. I’m sorry my sweet, come here.” Rory was pulled into a tight hug. Rory instantly felt better as he ran his hands through her hair. “I couldn’t do it. She begged me to give her a collar, but I knew what it meant. I couldn’t bring myself to make that sort of commitment with her.” Rory chuckled, unable to hide her smile, “What? I pour out my heart like this and you laugh at me?”
“I’m sorry” she giggled “I just find it crazy that you were willing to marry her but not collar her.”
He shook his head, “Yeah, I guess it is crazy when you put it that way. I just didn’t see it that way. It was too special.” He paused and looked at his watch. “Damn, I need to get home. I have work in the morning.” Rory helped him out the window stealing one last kiss before shutting it and pulling the curtains back down. Falling into bed she glanced at the clock, the time read 1:45am. She smiled holding onto her collar and was asleep in seconds.
