Shannon stormed into the precinct and up to the squadroom, the morning paper in her hand. "Detective Jeffries! Where is my son?!" She stood in the middle of the room and called to him, loud and clear, for everyone to hear as he sat at his desk and bit into his bagel with cream cheese, his lunch for the day.
Will finished his bite and stood up, wiping his mouth and hands on a napkin. "What do you mean?"
Stepping between them and holding her hands up in a non-threatening way, Lilly's brow furrowed. "I'm sorry, ma'am. I'm Detective Lilly Rush. Can I help you?" She kept her voice calm, to deter any hostilities. The woman looked familliar but it hadn't registered to Lilly as to who the woman was.
"I am Shannon Livingston.... where is my son, Detective?" Shannon fumed and shook from worry. "He left for here, after he saw this." She tossed the paper at her and glared at the female detective as the woman stared at the headline. "His boss called me and told me Cory never showed up at work. On what grounds have you arrested him, now?" Her icy stare bore holes into Lilly as she stared at the headline. She had hoped that her fears were wrong and that Cory was somewhere in lockup but, her fears hadn't been that nice.
Lilly looked up from the paper in her hands. "We haven't arrested him for anything. He was here, this morning, but he left for work at--"
"About a quarter to 10." Scotty finished and stood up from his seat, concealing his concern for the woman and her son. His concern for Shannon and Cory grew with the knew development. He had finished watching the videos of the trial, that morning, and came away with a new perspective on the case. After having just getting off the phone with Cory's attourney, he had started to fit the pieces of the case together and he wasn't liking the expected outcome.
"He did seem upset at the news. Maybe he took a personal day...?" Lilly offered.
Stillman came out of his office and walked over to stand beside Lilly. "Shannon, I'm Lieutenant John Stillman, head of this department. Please come in." He waved a hand back to his office, which she reluctantly accepted.
Shannon sat down in a chair, across from him and took a deep breath as she recounted the last moments she saw Cory. "I got up early. I couldn't sleep, last night. I came out for a smoke and just as I sat down, in my chair and lit my cig, out comes this girl from his house."
"Did you know who she was?" Lilly asked, sitting on the edge of the desk.
Shannon shook her head and took another deep breath to clear her mind. "She's his girlfriend. They've been seeing each other for about a year, I guess. He was nervous, yesterday, about having her over for dinner. Cory hasn't had very many dates, let alone ones that stay the night. Because of Vincent and that damn trial, girls have been very cruel to him. But, this one was different. She seemed interested in him. They were always out doing something."
"You didn't trust her?" Will asked as he sat beside her.
Shannon shook her head. "As a mother, you try and look out for your child. I've watched his heart get broke too many times to believe someone could look past what happened."
Lilly offered a small smile. "Maybe, she saw the good in him and wanted to try."
"Maybe."
Stillman nodded. "Let's start at the beginning. What's this young lady's name?" Taking a pen from the holder on his desk and grabbing a piece of paper, he got ready to write.
A sigh and a shrug, Shannon thought. "Carolyn um,... Carolyn Lambert. I only met her once or twice. She has blonde hair, like beach girl blonde, about 5'9", kinda slendre. Cory said she works down by a job site he's at, Mantle Restoration, on Allegheny and B St. She was a nice girl. I really thought he had met someone." She stared at the pen as it moved across the paper in short, fluid strokes before stopping. She seemed unsure of her statement, considering she and Shannon were the last non-police people to see Cory before he vanished.
Handing the paper to Lilly, Stillman nodded for the detective to pick the woman up.
"On it, boss." Lilly smiled warmly and tried to reassure Shannon they'd get to the bottom of it. She left the office and grabbed Scotty for the drive, leaving Will and Stillman to comfort and question Shannon.
Will leant on the chair's arm. "Cory's never had a lady-friend spend the night before?"
Shannon shook her head, staring down at her trembling hands. "No. The last girlfriend he had, found out about Vince. Told him never to speak to or come near her again, then she threatened him with a restraining order. The one before that worked in the office, at his work, and stood him up at some fancy restaurant. Quit her job and moved to Jersey. He was heartbroken." She paused to gather her thoughts. "This one, she's a nice girl. He was happy." Shannon sniffled and accepted the kleenex from the box that Will offered her.
"Did you hear anything last night? Loud voices? More voices?" Stillman inquired.
Again, Shannon shook her head. "No. She got there about 7 and left about 5.30, this morning. She had on a flimsy little party dress and his dress shirt." She fidgeted with the kleenex in her hand. "I knew this would happen. I should have listened to Tony and taken Cory far away from here."
Stillman's brow furrowed. "Tony?"
"My brother. He's a few years older than me. He moved to Florida, after his divorce was final and our parents passed."
Nodding, Stillman continued. "Why do you think Vince wants Cory?"
"Cory," she repeated, "me, Justin, and Nick, if he wasn't still locked up. Vincent Parker won't let anything go. And, Cory's at the top of his list for turning on his daddy." Shannon met Stillman's eyes and pleaded with him, silently, for any signs that everything would alright.
Will saw her hands tremble and gingerly reached over to place his hand over hers, in attempt to calm her. "Can we get you anything?" He asked, softly.
Shannon took a ragged breath and looked over at him. "I just want my boy back." As she said the words, she broke down in tears.
~~~~~~
Lilly parked along B Street and looked around as they both got out of the car. She followed Scotty as they made their way into the one-level blue buiding, on the corner. It was an office with a receptionist at the front and a long countre dividing the front are from the rest of the office. "Carolyn Lambert?" She walked up to the desk and held up badge to introduce them. "Detective Rush and Valens. Mind if we ask you a few questions?" She asked the girl at the desk, busy with paperwork and phone calls.
"Okay." Carolyn held up a finger and rang her fall back and told them she was taking a break and not to be disturbed. Glancing over her shoulder at the busy chatter and rustling of papers by her coworkers as they rushed to complete several important projects, she opted for them to move outside. "What's this about?" She asked as she walked them back out to the mildly busy street. She had showered and changed from her purple mini dress and heels to a long black skirt with a tucked in blue shirt with large black buttons.
Lilly opened her notepad and reached for her pen in her inside jacket pocket. "Mind if we ask you who you were with, last night?"
Carolyn eyed the two detectives warily but answered without hesitation. "My boyfriend. We had dinner at his place."
"Mind giving us his name and how long you were there?" Scotty asked as he stood just behind and to the right of Lilly.
Carolyn's mouth went dry as she had a bad feeling about where the conversation was leading to. "Cory... Livingston.... and I was there all night. What is this about?" She had hoped nothing had happened to him but she hadn't expected to stay all night, when she had to get up early and ready for work by 7 that morning.
Still writing in her notes, Lilly let Scotty ask the other questions about their evening. "Did you two have a fight? Sex? Fall asleep watching a movie? Anything out of the ordinary happen, last night?"
Scoffing at the questions, Carolyn wrinkled her nose at him and sighed, annoyed. "Other than mind-blowing, passionate sex, nothing was out of the ordinary. No alien visits or Sasquatch came to the door. What does my sex life have to do with anything? Did something happen to Cory? Oh god! He's not dead, is he?"
Shaking her head, Lilly looked up. "No. His mother claims she saw you come out of his house, this morning at about 5.30. He never made it to work. Did you see him any other time, this morning?"
Trying to think whilst her mind boggled at the fact of her boyfriend missing, Carolyn shook her head and "hmmed." Glancing back to the door of the shop, as they stood fifteen feet from it, she looked back at Lilly. "No. I left him, he was still asleep.
"How long have you two been intimate?" Lilly asked.
Carolyn blushed. She eyed Scotty, embarrassedly. "Uh, last night was our first time. Normally, the guys I date, can't wait to get me into bed, ya know? But, he said he didn't want to rush anything. I thought it was sweet." She glanced back at the door and then at her thin wristwatch on her left wrist. "Look, I don't know where he is or how I can help. But, I'll keep my eyes and ears out for him." She glanced back at the door again, expecting to see her boss standing there, waiting for her to return. "I have to get back to work."
Nodding, Lilly handed Carolyn her card and told her to call if she had any questions, or if Cory had shown up or gotten in touch with her.
"Thanks!" A nervous smile as Carolyn gave a short wave goodbye and hurried back inside.
Scotty turned and put his hands on his hip, annoyed that something wasn't feeling right about her statements. "What do you want to do, now? It's a quarter to five. Wanna talk to his boss? See if maybe someone at his job knows about them?"
Lilly nodded. The woman's answers seemed a little off, to her as well. "Yeah, maybe someone who sees him every day can tell us a little bit more about Cory. Maybe, they knew about the date, too."
~~~~~~
"Cory's a good guy. A bit awkward at times but, a good guy. Knows what the Hell he's doing, without having to redo everything." Marty Goldsmith, a 60-year-old foreman and someone who helped guide Cory, since he first started at the company, replied as the two detectives sat down in his office. "Never really had any trouble with him, though. Always on time, always working over hours; comes in early, leaves late, weekends, nights, anything we need. I don't think the kid owns a TV or a bed."
Lilly smiled. "A hard worker, huh?"
Goldsmith nodded. "Very. Just don't understand why he didn't show up or call or anything, today."
Scotty looked up from his writing. "How much do you know about his personal life? Hobbies, friends, enemies, dating circle?"
Cupping a hand over his mouth in thought, Goldsmith then pulled on his well-trimmed salt and pepper beard. "Hobbies, I think he makes train sets for the kids at some place he goes to, a few times a week. I don't think he has any friends, outside of work. He has a cell phone but he keeps it in his locker, sometimes forgets it. Dates and enemies? I don't know. Who'd hate the guy?"
"Has Cory ever had any altercations with cowarkers? Disagreements?" Scotty askied.
Goldsmith shook his head. "No. Cory really doesn't talk much, to anyone. He can hold his own. That I know. A few years ago, we had a company picnic. A few guys on the clean up crew got outta hand, drunk, started wrasslin'. Anyway, they got carried away, started an argument with one of their wives or girlfriends, Cory stepped in and talked the guy out of hitting the woman."
Lilly nodded as she listened. "How'd the guy feel about it?"
"He was fine. Once he sobred up, he and Cory had a laugh." Goldsmith laughed at the memory. "I think Greg's been in the AA thing about two years, now." He sighed as he had a feeling where their questions were leading to. "I do know this, about Cory. I know he has a troubled past with a lot of hurdles he had to overcome. Talking about his family was... is... taboo to him. I just pray he's alright and he still has a job, when he returns from working whatever it, out. "
Scotty asked one last question before they stood and left. "Who does he hang around with, here?"
Again, Goldsmith thought, leaning back in his plush swivel chair. "Trevor Greene. He and Cory have been working on a project together, for about 8 months. He should be rolling in here, momentarilly."
"Thank you. Let us know if you can think of anything else that might help." Scotty handed him his card and followed Lilly out of the cramped trailer office.
They were stopped by the pretty, young secretary, at the front, next to the door. "Are you asking about where Cory is?" Southwestern girl of 29, stood up and asked as Lilly smiled a goodbye to her. She had come to have personal feelings for Cory and was hurt and worried that he hadn't shown up for work that day.
Lilly paused and cocked her head at the smaller woman. "Yes. How well do you know him?"
Tracy, the receptionist of two years, nodded to the door and motioned that they step outside to talk. She waited until they stepped down that stairs and walked a ways from the building before answering. "I don't really know him, that well. I've only talked to him a few times. He's a sweet guy. Always wanted to help." She sighed nervously and looked around for anyone coming towards them. "I had a rough time with a guy, a month ago. Very abusive. Anyway, we kinda ran into each other, outside the Rite Aid. My ex was ragging on me, in the parking lot. He got real loud. Cory was the only one who stood between us and made him regret raising a hand to me. Joey ran off, got arrested a few days later for B&E. Cory and I got to taking, about what happened, ya know? We sat in his truck for hours and just talked. Never made a move toward me or anything. He wouldn't let me go until I stopped crying and shaking. He insisted on driving me home, to my parents's house. He told me that he had an abusive childhood and that his dad still scared him. A few days later, he was like jumpy. You know? Like he'd seen a ghost."
"Did he ever tell you what was troubling him? Or what he saw?" Scotty watched her expression for signs of falsehood.
Tracy shook her head. "But he kept looking over his shoulder for about a week." She raised a hand up to pull a few strands of chocolate-coloured hair from her pink lip gloss.
Lilly squinted as the sun had dipped low enough on the horizon to catch her eye. "Did you ever hear of him dating anyone or hanging out with friends?"
Feeling guilty for not speaking up about it sooner, Tracy fidgeted before she answered. "I went to get some lunch, today. About 11, I think. They were sitting in a booth, at the diner, The Blue Dollar, down the street. Cory and this blonde flitty thing. They were sitting across from each other and talking kind of low. I was at the countre, waiting, so it wasn't like I was trying to listen in. A few minutes later, she got up and gave him this epic movie kiss goodbye and leaves. After she left the diner, this scraggily guy walks up, sits down next to Cory and the look on Cory's face was like... he was terrified. I mean, I know we've all got monsters in our pasts to contend with... I think his are daemons are real."
Lilly listened to her, interested in what the scraggily guy looked like. "Can you tell us anything else about the guy Cory was with? Did you see his face?"
Tracy sighed. "He had like a beany cap on. Thin face, scruffy beard. About Cory's height. Kinda slendre. He looked kind of young, too. Like around Cory's age. They looked like brothers, almost." She was mostly sure about what the other guy looked like but knew that her memory was not picture perfect. Still, she felt better to tell the police than to brush it off and have something seriously happen to her friend. "I know I've only been here almost two years and don't exactly know him that well but, I don't think this is the kinda guy Cory hangs out with, normally."
"Anything else happen?" Lilly and Scotty glanced at each other as they both knew who it was.
"They left together. Cory saw me and only shook his head at me. The look he had really scared me. I really hope he's okay."
Scotty nodded. "Did you see which way they were headed? A vehicle they took?"
Tracy shook her head. "My order was up so, they hit the door, I had to pay. Sorry. Cory has a white Ford F250. They must have taken that 'cause it wasn't there when I left."
Lilly finished writing and looked up at her. "Thank you. We'll look into it. If you think of anything else, our cards have both home and office numbers."
"Thank you." Tracy offered a small, concered smile as they left. She stared at the card and prayed Cory would be found alive and well as the look he had given her as they passed each other had haunted her all day.

Prison busstop, 2003
A squeal of glee as the young woman ran with open arms, from her late model convertable Mustang, into the arms of the 68-year-old man that stepped out of the bus and looked around. She had been sitting there, on the passenger side door, for over an hour, waiting for the bus to pull up and her pen pal of two years, to get off. Their lips locked as she pressed her body against his. "Hey, baby! Wanna get something to eat, or do you have something else in mind?" A wry grin and a wink as they separated. She twisted her body back and forth, hoping Vince would get the idea.
Vince eyed the young tart and pulled her close again. "I got something better in mind." He smiled at her and gave another kiss before following her back to her car, staring at her backside with lust-filled, crystal gray eyes. Tossing his bag into the backseat and sitting down, beside her, in the front, Vince shut the door and tossed her a disarming smile. "Let's go."
She drove across town, to a motel and parked, putting the top up and getting out of the car. "Here we are. It's upstairs. Is that okay?" She smiled, giddily. She had hardly been able to contain her excitement, when she heard he was getting out. She had learnt about him in her Pre-Law class at University and had spent countless hours watching and rewatching the school's recorded version of the trials. She had also gotten in touch with Vince's lawyer and asked him to be the courier for their correspondance, to which, he happily agreed, once certain indiscretions were out of the way.
Vince followed her up the stairs and into the room, down the hall. He stood in the doorway as she plopped down on the bed, jumping in excitement. He smiled, wickedly.
"Anything else you want?" She smiled.
Closing the door behind him and dropping his bag on the floor, Vince came closer to her and nudged her shoulder, telling her to lie down. He loomed over her as she lie across the end of the bed. Undoing his jeans and shoving up her skirt, he smirked at the sight of her tiny pink bikini panties with a little red bow on the front, around the wasitband. He made quick work of divesting them both of clothing and starting in on the action as quickly and abruptly as possible. He reveled in her moans and scratches on his back. The sounds filled his ears and urged him on, several times until they finally broke for something to eat and rest.
Carolyn smiled and snuggled close to his side, resting her head on his abdomen as he lie propped up, against the headboard, a pillow behind him. "Mm, you can do that to me, whenever you like."
Vince smirked. "Soon as my boy gets out, we're gonna make a lot of changes, baby." He had been looking over an electric razor, as opposed to his favoured straight razor, he carried. He jumped slightly as he clicked it on and then ran the blades over a small patch of bear on his right cheek. Feeling the smoothness the razor had made, he smiled and took to using it on the rest of his beard.
Shifting and sitting up to turn and face him, Carolyn blinked wide-eyed at him. "What's the first step?" She had eyed him as if he were the Prince Charming she had been looking for. His correspondence had been precise in what he felt and seemed he knew exactly what to say to entice her. She had believed he was an innocent party and that his youngest son had fabricated it all because he didn't want to live in the remote wilderness of the mountains.
"Need to you find someone for me." Vince's voice flattened.
Carolyn shifted again, presenting her bare chest to him. "Okay, who?"
Vince licked his lips and reached up to play with a pert nipple on her perfect C-cup breast. "Cory Parker. We got some things we need settling." Laying the electric razor down on the bedside table, he turned back to move and suck at her right breast, flicking his tongue over the nipple. He reveled in the taste and loved it even more as his nibblings were met with more moans of pleasure. He ended his teasings as she shifted again to get his attention.
"Okay." She moaned in pleasure at his ministrations. "Then, what?"
"Then, we're gonna have some fun."
She gasped and giggled as Vince grabbed her and pulled her close for a kiss and to roll them over for another romp before closing his eyes to sleep.
