Regina reappears in another swirl of purple smoke, gripping a man by the arm, with her other hand clasping a girl to her chest. The man yanks his arm from her grasp, turning on her in a fit of rage but he freezes when he sees the girl. Regina slowly puts the girl down and gives her a nudge toward her Father, smiling softly as the two embrace.
"Do not blame Regina," my voice captures Jefferson's attention and he spins around. "Look up, I am in the tree, yes, hello, I am aware that I am on fire but we are just going to ignore that for now. My name is Raven, I am the woman who helped Rumplestiltskin kill Peter Pan. I know that a lot of people around here do not like me, they think that I cannot be trusted. Still, whether you believe me or not you have my word that I mean to bring no harm to you or your daughter. The reason so that you are here is so that I can tell you that you have been right all along. You are not crazy, you never have been, you feel like a part of you is missing. You thought it was your daughter but despite the depth of your love for her that feeling is still there."
"That is exactly the way that I feel," Jefferson sounds absolutely stunned as he stares up at me. "The only way that you could know that is if you have felt it too, ugh, you're too far away. I can't see into your eyes but I don't think you feel that way, not any more, at least not completely. I can't just see it, I can hear it sometimes too, that hollow sound, right in the middle. You have it but you don't it's wierd, like you managed to fix it but then it happened again, I'm sure you know how to fix it. I need you to tell me how to fix it, you have to tell me, I will make you tell me. I need to fix it, I can't control myself until I fix it and I'm scared that I'll do something. It's like I'm here but I'm somewhere else at the same time, always the same place, it smells like the sea. Everything moves like I'm on a ship, I can't keep my balance and then I'm back and I'm me again. Sometimes I'm in a completely different place and I don't know what I've done."
"She can't do anything," Killian speaks very quietly but his words attract everyone's attention. "Can you?" Killian looks up at me, our eyes meeting as I slowly shake my head, conceding that he's right. "The flames are a side effect of a poison known as Arenlily, she can't use magic until the flames are gone. The only way to speed up the process is to get hold of a dragon and the only way to get the dragon is to use magic. That thing has hidden on my ship for more than a hundred years. The only way it comes out is it can sense him, which means that someone has to open a portal. The kind of portal that only spans space and not into different worlds, Regina can't do that. The only person here who has done this before and can do it right now is me. Raven, I can't pick my finger on how many years it's been since I've used magic, I don't even know if I still have it. I'm willing to try but I don't know if I can do it, I don't know if it's still in me, I never really used it that much back then. I know what to do but doing it may be a different matter."
I catch Killian's eye and try to convey with nothing more than a look that I know he can do this. Apparently something gets through because he nods his head and lets his eyes drift slowly closed. I feel the swell of his magic, a familiar sensation that somehow makes me feel safe, even though we both know that I'm the one who's always protected him. I keep my mind at a close distance. If he loses control there's a chance that I'll be able to grab hold of his power and finish the spell. I don't want to do that, I truly believe that Killian can do this and I think that he needs to. Just as I finish the thought a portal large enough for him to put his hand through appears but the size shouldn't be an issue. If we were trying to walk through the portal we'd be stuck but all Killian needs to do is place his hand inside. The dragon will sense Jefferson and climb straight into Killian's hand. All Killian has to do now is stay focused long enough for that to happen, he has more than enough power to sustain the portal. He just needs to believe that he can do it.
Before I can say a word Killian's eyes widen and he slowly withdraws his hand from the portal. A small lump of silver is nestled in his palm and he carries it carefully to Jefferson. Jefferson holds out his hand, a look of wonder in his face as Killian slowly tips his hand. As soon as the lump touches Jefferson's skin it begins to move, uncoiling a tiny little dragon. The dragon lets out a triumphant sounding screech as Jefferson's face morphs into an expression that defies description. The word that comes closest is joy but that still doesn't come any closer to describing the way that they actually feel. The hatchling scampers over the man, nuzzling into him. Then the dragon's head snaps round and she looks up at me, her whole body coming to attention.
"Yes, little one," I speak softly but I know that the hatchling can not only hear me but she understands. "It would seem as if I require your help but you do not need to worry. I know exactly what it is that you need and I have the means to get it for you, or rather Killian will. My apologies, I know that you thought that you were done for the night but the worst is yet to come. You remember what this is?" I plunge my hand into my chest and pull out what looks like a chunk of onyx. "That means that you know what you need to do and why it has to be you. You are the only one who can handle this without being killed by it's power, even Rumplestiltskin could not do this. I am putting my trust in you, the little one needs to be fed. You can create a portal to an endless food supply with this, she cannot quench the flames at her size."
"You can't be serious?" Killian breathes and in reply I drop the hunk of stone, forcing him to lunge so that he can catch it. "Don't pretend like this is nothing, lass, like I don't understand what this means. Not only are you giving me one of the most powerful things in the world but this can control you. It works the same way that the dagger does, like a heart does when taken with magic. Not to mention the fact that by giving this to me you are breaking laws that you were instrumental in implementing. If your Mother's home she will see this as an act of war. I can do what you're asking me to, love, I've used your Grace to summon angels I can use your Corruption to summon demons. I'm questioning whether or not I should be doing this at all, this town has been lucky so far. It has escaped the notice of the more powerful worlds but it won't be that way forever. How big is that hatchling going to have to be?" I shrug and when Killian meets my eye he knows that he has to do this whether he wants to or not. "Bloody hell, woman. Fine, I'll do it but that doesn't mean that I have to like it, you got anything up there I can use on anything that gets past her?"
I disappear from my spot on the windowsill before retrieving a rope and a sword. The rope is anchored to the bed frame which grows directly from the wall of the tree so when I launch myself out of the window I don't fall far. I let the sword drop to the ground. I trigger the spell that hides the stairs, revealing them and shooting a meaningful look at Jefferson's daughter. She is ushered into the treehouse, safe now that I'm no longer in it. Killian looks at the sword as if it's about to bite him, the shifting shadows that cross the honey coloured metal only reinforcing his fears. He looks from the stone in his hand to the sword and back again. After a few seconds he places the stone inside of his shirt and draws the sword from the earth, his shoulders straightening. I feel dark magic begin to rise and suddenly a dark vortex opens with all manner of twisted creatures coming tumbling through.
"That is enough," I call once the dragon has eaten her fill. "She is large enough to take the flames now and she is large enough to fly up here. Close the portal before I have to spend the next week hunting demons through the woods."
"I'm trying," Killian growls through gritted teeth as he beheads a small demon that slipped past the dragon. "Closing them is always harder than opening them, lass, especially now that they know the portal's open. You know how much demons love the mortal world. They're pushing back but I think I have them, love, the portal should close any time now, at least I'm hoping it will. I've only done this once before and that was a very different situation. What are you waiting around for?" Killian gasps as the portal snaps shut and he dispatches with the last demon on this side. "If the dragon is ready then you shouldn't be waiting around for me. Get on with putting that fire out so we can go looking for our damsel in distress and save the day."
"She'll help you," Jefferson says softly as the dragon launches into the air. "I can hear her voice in my head, I know it's hers and not one of the others, they're gone now. She has a message for you, it doesn't make any sense to me and she said that if she tells you herself she'll be breaking the rules. She said that she finally understands what they mean and she'll never break them again. She wants you to know that she had a voice in her head too. That she told him where you are and that he would come for you but he can't leave his home. The barriers have been locked, it was the spell that he was supposed to cast, only he wasn't the one who did. Someone else cast the spell and he was caught on the wrong side of it but he wants you to know that he loves you."
"That's all really sweet," Regina grunts as the dragon takes a deep breath, sucking the flames away from me. "But we should all remember that we're out here for a reason that has nothing to do with dragons, demons or magical flames. We're out here because Miss Swan needs our help. The longer she stays out here the bigger chance there is that someone stumbles onto her. We should just be thankful no one has found her yet, she won't be able to control herself. I know that I can't control her, light magic doesn't mix well with what I am. Blue was knocked out by your spell and Rumplestiltskin does even worse when it comes to light magic than I do."
I'm about to cut the rope that keeps me suspended when I feel a disturbance in the spell that I placed around Emma. Someone has found her, we've run out of time for these games. I open a portal beneath me, cutting the rope at the same time so that I fall through it. I almost crash into Henry on the other side just as Emma's panic at the boy's appearance pushes her over the edge. There's no time for me to cast a barrier or protection spell and the power that she's unleashed is more than enough to destroy us. I do the only thing I can think of. I meet her wave of magic with one of equal strength, allowing the two forces to cancel each other out. A wave of exhaustion washes over me when I unleash the magic and the portal shimmers behind me. Killian steps through, jamming my Corruption back into my chest and pushing Henry though the portal in one fluid motion. The exhaustion disappears and so does the pirate, leaving me and Emma alone.
"You do not need to be afraid," I tell the woman, sobbing now, though I'm unsure as to the reason. "You cannot harm me and I will not allow you to harm anyone else, you do not need to be concerned about that. There is something bothering you, something going on inside your head. You had control of your power and now you do not, there is only one way that something like this can happen. Something has changed you so that you no longer understand yourself. Until you can accept what has changed you and the person that you have become you will be unable to control your magic. I am not going anywhere, you do not need to tell me anything. That does not change the fact that I am going to be right here and if you decide that you do want to talk then I will listen. I may even be able to help if you would accept that from me, I am familiar with most scenarios that could tip someone into the kind of chaos that you are experiencing. You are the only person that can save yourself, I am just here, to do whatever you need me to do to help with that."
