Title: Shore Leave
Author: Ginny Powell
Chapter 7
Trip had forgotten how bright sunlight could be, how it made everything look clean and new. He was standing by the window, looking down at San Francisco, at trees and grass and air, wearing a hotel robe and drying his hair with a towel, when Charlie finally woke up.
“G’mornin’,” Trip drawled, turning at her waking sounds, a smile that threatened to outshine the sunlight growing on his face.
Charlie just squinted and threw an arm across her face. “What time is it?”
“About O-seven-hundred. I actually slept in; I’m usually up at six.”
Charlie lifted her arm enough to get a look at him. “Me, too, but I seem to be a bit sleepy this morning. Would you have any idea why?”
“None whatsoever,” Trip replied with a chuckle and a smile. Charlie echoed it and sat up.
She started to run a hand through her hair, but it snagged on a tangle. Then she looked down at her still-sticky chest. “I seem to be in dire need of a shower,” she observed. “I don’t suppose you’d like to join me?”
“Love to, but I already had one.” Before she could get out her rebuttal, he added, “Besides, I’m starvin’. Why don’t I order us up some breakfast while you get cleaned up? Get the maid to change the sheets, too? In case we decide to go back to bed later.”
“Definitely. All right, you are excused, this one time.” Charlie rose, stretched beside the bed, then gave Trip a chaste kiss as she passed. From the door of the bathroom, she called, “You will be here when I get out?”
“Wild horses couldn’t drag me away!” he answered. He was already adding his breakfast order to the standing one Charlie had entered on check-in. A few minutes later, he had an ETA on the room service and maid service. He was about to get up from the terminal when it occurred to him that Enterprise didn’t know where he was, and he’d left his communicator on board. Feeling he ought to at least check in, he placed the call.
“Hey, Cap’n,” Trip greeted Archer when the transfer had gone through.
“Trip!” Jon replied, sounding a bit relieved. “Just the man I need to see. Seems there’s a problem with the replacement hull plates. When can you get back up here?”
“Well, actually, I was thinkin’ day after tomorra,” Trip responded casually, leaning back in his chair. “That should give me time to do the final inspection and put out any last minute fires.”
“But-” Archer was caught off guard by his Chief Engineer’s complete change of attitude from the day before. “What about-”
“I’m sure Lt. Hess can han’le it; trained her myself, after all.”
Archer was speechless for a moment, his mouth working, but nothing coming out. Then Charlie walked across the background, wearing only a towel.
“I see,” Jon finally got out, his eyes following her appreciatively. He tried not to smile, but he couldn’t keep one side of his mouth from turning up.
“Good. I’ll keep in touch in case any emergencies come up. And I mean real emergencies.”
Jon nodded. “Understood. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do. Archer out.”
Trip turned the screen off and swiveled in his chair, just in time to see Charlie drop her towel onto the floor by the bed.
“When will breakfast be here?” she asked casually.
“’Bout ten minutes,” Trip answered, not looking her in the eye; his eyes had other things to occupy them. “They’re kinda busy, what with the conference an’ all.”
“Aw, and you so hungry. Perhaps an appetizer is in order?”
Trip’s robe quickly joined Charlie’s towel on the floor.
Two days later, they were standing near a landing platform outside London, awaiting Trip’s shuttle back to Enterprise. It had been a lovely two days. Neither the sex nor the conversation had grown boring. Trip figured they’d talked more warp theory in a horizontal position than any two people ever had, or would. They’d even made time for a visit to Charlie’s lab, enabling him to console himself over their parting with thoughts of all the improvements he’d soon be making to his warp engine. He’d even remembered to give her a copy of their picture.
“I’ll write ya,” he reassured Charlie as the shuttle began its descent.
“And I you.” Charlie leaned in for a quick kiss, smoothed his shirt front with slightly trembling hands. “Take care of yourself.”
“I will.”
The shuttle had landed, the open door beckoned. There seemed nothing else to say. He took a few steps, walking backwards, reluctant to turn away.
“I’ll look for that paper in Physics Today!” he called, and waved. She waved back. Impetuously, he blew her a kiss, saw her blow one back. Then he was inside, and Travis Mayweather was taking them up.
“Did you have a good shore leave, Commander?” Travis asked from the helm.
h, yh, yeah,” Trip called back, putting a lot of feeling behind the simple words, as he settled his bag on the floor at his feet.
“Better than Risa, huh?” Travis teased.
“Absolutely no comparison. How ‘bout you?”
“Well, I didn’t break my leg,” quipped the helmsman wryly.
As the two men shared a chuckle, Trip prodded his bag with his foot, making sure the gallon jug of Tennessee whiskey was still intact. Then he turned a smiling face to the rapidly approaching star field.
