“NO!”
Jari screamed sitting up straight in bed. She was drenched with sweat and
crying. Another nightmare. The tenth, no maybe it was the eleventh night in a
row. She wasn’t all too sure. With the lack of sleep, she’d lost track of time.
She got out of bed and changed into dry clothes. Then, she sat down at the table
without a blanket, using her shivering to keep herself awake. She didn’t want
to go back to sleep.
/Damn
scavenging missions…damn despair squid…/ She focused on pushing all the
memories out of her mind.
****
“Rims,
you awake?” Lister whispered and elbowed the back he had been clawing at only
an hour earlier.
“Yes,”
Rimmer sighed and rolled over to face Lister. “I heard her.”
“It’s
been two weeks. She’s not gettin’ any rest,” Lister
sat up. “I’m going to check on her.”
“I
was going to say the same thing,” Rimmer followed after him.
****
“Jari?”
they stepped into her open doorway. Since the third or fourth night, she hadn’t
closed her door. The dream was about being trapped in a small space. It wasn’t
the same cabinet that Kryten had locked her in during the despair squid ordeal
though.
Actually,
Jari wasn’t sure where it was. It started with her in a dark tight space. She
would try to move only to find solid mass imprisoning her. She would hear
voices and try to call to them but nothing ever happened, no one ever came. She
would quickly go mad pounding at the walls confining her and screaming as loud
as she could. She would beat and kick so hard that her skin would burst open.
She would scream so loud and hard that her throat would bleed. In the end, it
didn’t matter where she was, she just wanted out; and after she was awakened by
her real screams, it was just a desire for the night terrors to stop.
“Hol, dim light please,” Rimmer whispered.
Jari
was still sitting at her table shivering in her ship issue tee and boxers.
“Jari,
you okay?” Lister knelt beside her. “God, what a stupid question. I’m sorry.”
Rimmer
grabbed a blanket from the closet, draped it around her and knelt at her other
side, “Jari, talk to us,” he stressed turning her face to his.
“The
same dream. Nothing to tell. Go back to bed. I’m fine now,” she mumbled.
“The
hell you are, Jar, you’re exhausted. That’s only making it worse,” Lister moved
to the other side of the table by Rimmer. “I say she bunks with us for the rest
of the night.”
Rimmer
lost his balance where he knelt and fell on his bum, “Listy,
are you sure you’re awake?”
Jari had been shocked by
Lister’s remark as well and by Rimmer nearly pulling her out of the chair. She
couldn’t form words to make any audible sound to decline the offer. As much as
she had ever wanted to be with the two men, this was not the way she wanted it
to come about.
“Yes,
I’m awake and ya heard me. She’s not gonna get any rest ‘til she knows and
feels she isn’t alone. Now come on, I’m freezin’,” he
said pulling Rimmer up off the floor.
****
“No, guys, really I’m okay.
I could go to Krissie and Shayne’s room if I need to.
They wouldn’t mind,” Jari had finally found her voice as she fought uselessly
against the escorting hands guiding her down the corridor.
“Nonsense,
they’re too far away and they don’t have any extra bunk space,” Lister replied.
“Like
you two have it!” Jari stressed. “I don’t recall seeing two beds
in your room.”
“Our bed is big enough for
three. We’ll make do now come on,” Lister continued as they entered the guy’s
room.
This
was all just a little bit too bizarre for Jari. She’d never be able to fall
asleep. And she knew what the next question was going to be…
“Wall
or middle,” Rimmer asked her. Although Lister’s suggestion had taken him by
surprise, he saw an opportunity here that he didn’t want to pass up.
“Outside!”
Jari exclaimed as best she could without shouting. Her throat was noticeably
sore from her calling out in her sleep.
“No
cuz you’ll just get up and leave after we go to
sleep,” Rimmer scolded.
“I
always sleep on th’ outside anyway,” Lister nudged
her towards the bed. “Put her to the wall Rims so if she does try, she’ll have
to get past us both.”
Jari
looked at the bed, then Rimmer, then Lister, then back at the bed. She was
thoroughly intimidated by the whole situation. She was in no condition to
handle this situation. She’d almost rather keep on having the nightmare.
Rimmer
was looking intently at Lister. He had been the whole time. /What has gotten
into him? What is he thinking? Maybe I should have told him about it all
first…no I can’t go about it this way. I need to tell them both separately
first./
Seeing
no way out, Jari wrapped her blanket around her and slowly eased to the wall.
She lay as close to it as she comfortably could.
Rimmer
lay down beside her, “We don’t bite Jar.”
“You
don’t want my comment to that Rimmer,” Jari rolled over to face the wall.
“Busted,”
Lister giggled from the other side of Rimmer.
“You
two are doing any explaining that comes out from this, kapesh?”
Jari tried to hide the fact she was smiling slightly.
“Just
get some sleep,” Rimmer instructed.
Jari
sighed and closed her eyes. She really was exhausted and having the guys right
there was helping. She dozed off rather quickly to the guy’s amazement and
gratification. They curled up together and fell asleep as well.
During
her slumber, Jari got hot with two men beside her. She unconsciously shed her
blanket, kicking it to the foot of the bed. Before long, Rimmer woke to her
shifting. She was cold and searching for her blanket. He cautiously covered her
with what was in his reach: the bed sheet. He got more than he bargained for.
He disturbed her enough to make her completely alter position. She rolled over
and curled up close to the warmth she discovered next to her. Rimmer wasn’t
sure what to do. He poked Lister in the side.
“What
is it?” Lister spoke groggily.
“I
swear I didn’t do anything but cover her back up and she rolls over and
practically lays on me,” Rimmer whispered.
Lister
curled up to Rimmer’s other side, “She’s sleeping
man, don’t move her,” he smiled. “She’s quite cute when she’s asleep. Can we
keep her?”
“Listy! Would you listen to yourself? Are you feeling okay?”
Rimmer exclaimed in a whispered tone.
Despite
the soft timbre to their voices, Jari was disturbed again. She moved closer
running a leg up his thigh, and her arm reached across his chest. Her face soon
came to rest peacefully on his shoulder after Rimmer was forced to move his arm
so she wouldn’t be lying on top of it. He put it behind her lightly and
carefully not wanting to disturb her again. He felt Lister tense up and looked
over at him. Jari’s hand had come to rest on Lister’s
back and Jari’s face was quite close to his, which
was lying on Rimmer’s chest as well.
Lister
gasped. “Shit!”
“Listy this is all your fault. She’s gonna wake up and hate
us forever for this!” Rimmer whimpered.
“Would
you shut up, you’ll make things worse,” Lister scolded quietly.
They
both fell silent, but not for long.
“Rims?
You asleep?” Lister whispered.
“Hell
no,” Rimmer replied.
“Do
you think she’s pretty Rim?” Lister asked.
“What?”
Rimmer choked as his voice cracked.
“You
heard me. Answer me question.”
“I,
I guess so. Why? Do you?” Rimmer had become really aroused by this situation
and he knew Lister had either noticed or soon would.
“I’m
not blind Rimme’,” Lister took his hand and brushed Jari’s cheek.
“Stop
that, you’ll make her move again,” Rimmer scolded. /She might move away. I
don’t want her to move./
“You
know more about her than you told us Rimme’, why
won’t you tell me?” Lister moved his hand to Rimmer’s
cheek.
“I,
I promised her Listy. I can’t tell anyone. And that
most certainly includes you.”
“If
I were to guess, would you tell me if I were right?” Lister asked with a
devious grin propping up slightly to look Rimmer in the eye.
“You’d
never guess Listy, not in a million years,” Rimmer
sighed.
He
knew that look Lister had on his face. Lister had been thinking about this
already. He may in fact have actually figured out parts of Jari’s
story. Rimmer had known Jari wouldn’t be able to keep her secrets forever. But
he’d never planned that he, the one person that knew exactly why she had been
in stasis, would be the one to let it slip. Rimmer needed to confess his
ulterior motive for bringing Jari back with him, but this was definitely not
the time or place.
“Was
she in love with the Rimmer of her universe?” Lister took his first guess
anyway.
“Not
exactly, remember he was gay and with her Lister to boot.” Rimmer sighed
again.
Lister
thought a moment, “you said not exactly, so I was close.”
“Just
go back to sleep Dave,” Rimmer insisted.
“We
know she’s not a lesbian. It had to be a guy, but not Cat, that wouldn’t
explain her in stasis…”
“David!”
Rimmer stressed. /I can’t even hint to him that I want to tell him something
tomorrow because he really won’t drop it until I tell him./
“Someone
on the Dwarf?” Lister continued his thoughts aloud. “She never really talks
about any guys other than her Rimmer or Lister. Was it her Dave?”
“Give
it up David,” Rimmer was getting irritated and calling Lister ‘David’ should
have been an obvious sign to stop pushing the matter.
“Hmm,
wait, I’ve got it.” Lister whispered excitedly.
“Impossible,”
Rimmer breathed.
“She
liked both of them, us, that Rimmer and Lister. She has a thing for gay
guys,” he smiled triumphantly.
He
knew he was right because Rimmer sighed and looked down to Jari, kissing her
ever so gently on the top of her head now resting lower on his chest. Lister
leaned over and kissed her as well, then looked at his boyfriend lovingly.
“I
had it pieced together here and there already. You have to tell me everything
or I won’t leave you alone,” Lister kissed him on the mouth.
“Alright,
but not tonight. I can’t break my word with her right here. Please just go to
sleep,” Rimmer sighed.
Lister
lay back down mirroring Jari’s position and wrapped
his arm around Jari’s back as best he could. It felt
like forever that Rimmer lay cradling the two people he cared most for in the
multi-universe.
/To
think, all my life, I wanted just one person to care for me and now I could
have two. And what’s even more, they quite possibly care for each other as
well. I must be the one dreaming now. For the love of Io, I hope I never wake
up./ Rimmer finally allowed himself to drift off to sleep.
****
Jari
woke to an empty bed. She was sprawled face down in the middle of it. She felt
rested for once, if she had ever really known what it felt like to have a good
night’s sleep. She lay there a moment drinking in the mingled scents of the two
men and peacefulness of the room. She sat up taking full notice she was
completely alone. She looked around for the clock.
“Holly,
what time is it?” she asked.
“The
guys didn’t want to disturb you. They were so pleased to see you resting. It’s
just a little after 1300 hours,” she finally answered.
“1300
hours?” Jari leapt from the bed.
“Don’t
worry, they are taking care of your duties today,” Hol
jumped up on screen. “They said you were not to be disturbed so you could get
some rest.”
“Where
are they?” Jari asked.
“I’m
not at liberty to say,” Hol answered. “They were
adamant for you to stay here and rest.”
“Holly!
Where?” Jari demanded.
“In
tech lab,” Holly replied.
/Rimmer,
you couldn’t be…no…how could you?/ She ran out of the room. She ran all the way
there. She was running so fast she couldn’t stop in her sock feet and slid past
the door a few feet.
“Rimmer!”
she yelled. “Open. This. Door!”
Inside
the room, Lister and Rimmer looked at one another.
“Damn
it Listy, she’ll never forgive me or you for that
matter. I can’t believe I let you talk me into this,” Rimmer ejected the data
disk and hid it.
“Holly,
the doors now!” Jari ordered and they flew open.
Lister
hid behind Rimmer. Rimmer was much better with Jari’s
temper than him. Besides, at the moment she was yelling at Rimmer, not him.
“Rimmer,
give it, right now.” Jari ordered with hand held out.
“Give
what Jar?” Rimmer choked out an obvious lie.
“Don’t
make me pull rank Technician. My data files now,” she ordered again.
“Umm,
no corps, no ranks, Jar,” Lister got brave all of a sudden stepping out from
behind Rimmer. He’d seen all he needed to see from her files. She cared enough
for the two of them to take stasis punishment. She wasn’t out to separate
Lister and Rimmer; she wanted them both as a part of her life. Her Lister and
Rimmer had been blind but this Lister and Rimmer weren’t and he was going to
let her know it.
“She’s
really cute when she’s angry, ain’t she Rim?”
“Listy,” Rimmer mumbled in singsong, “you’re not helping our
situation.”
Jari
didn’t know what to say. Rimmer broke her trust but—Lister was hitting on her.
Was he trying to make her feel better somehow? She felt suddenly sickened by the
sight before her.
“Just
stay away from me…both of you,” she choked out and ran from the room.
“Great,
Listy. Wonderful. Hit on her? That’s your solution?”
Rimmer slumped down into a chair.
“Did
you see though? She had to stop and think first. I threw her off,” Lister
beamed.
“Yeah,
but you see her decision with those extra seconds of decision-making time,”
Rimmer sighed. “This has turned out just grand.”
