Chapter Six
Chapter Six
Airwolf left Kristien’s estate. Hawke had embraced Kristien and gave her a loving hug and did not want to leave but Kristien did the leaving part for him and went back with Carsten saying she was going to try and have a rest then go riding with Special Agent Redwood.
Hawke guided Airwolf following the PDA GPS locator that was planted on Sayid. True to Carsten’s prediction he found Sayid’s limousine parked up. Sayid was stood waiting with his Driver and Tariq stood under a large tree. Hawke checked out the area and then hovered in front of the limousine. Sayid looked at Airwolf and admired the sleek lines of the awesome helicopter. Never had he seen anything like this.
“Weapons to combat mode.” Hawke requested.
“You got it String.” Dominic smiled knowing what Hawke was up to. Outside the ADF pod slipped in place and the sponsons deployed showing the canons and chain guns.
Sayid’s driver pulled out his weapon and stood in front of Sayid. Tariq too held a weapon.
Airwolf’s chain guns and canons deafened Sayid and his driver as it launched an attack on the limousine. Then when the limousine was full of holes, Airwolf unleashed a shrike missile blowing the limousine fifty feet in the air, landing back down with a fire ball to match. Airwolf gently landed near Sayid who stood in shock and awe of what he had just witnessed.
“This won’t take a minute Dom, keep her running.” Hawke told Dominic as he exited Airwolf.
“Sure thing String.” Dominic replied. “Oh String.”
Hawke stuck his head back into Airwolf and looked at the old Italian sat at the EDCC. “Yeah?”
“Don’t kill him okay?” Dominic held up his hands to Hawke.
“He’s still alive isn’t he?” Hawke smirked.
Sayid and Tariq stopped in their tracks when they saw Hawke walk towards them. They started to question who the hell Hawke was. How did he have a helicopter of that magnitude? It looked experimental, nothing on this earth looked like that.
“What the hell is that?” Sayid questioned Hawke pointing to Airwolf and the remains of the smouldering wreck that was their armoured limousine.
“That is your ride to hell.” Hawke informed Sayid.
“Why do you have it? It looks military.” Sayid admired Airwolf in the distance and began to think. “How does a civilian have hold of a secret military mach one helicopter?” Sayid suddenly remembered something. “Khadaffi had this helicopter didn’t he?”
“You finished?” Hawke avoided all the barrage of questions.
“Well you have my attention so what do you want?” Sayid questioned.
“You are not going to consummate your so called marriage to Kristien on Friday or any other day, you hear me.” Hawke told Sayid.
“You cannot tell me what I can and cannot do with my wife.” Sayid informed Hawke.
“Sayid I will tell you one more time, slow, just in case you didn’t hear me the first time. “Hawke removed his sunglasses and looked Sayid in the eye. “You touch Kristien in anyway that she does not allow, I will blow you so far up in the sky that they will never find enough of you to bury.” Hawke spat through gritted teeth. “And believe me I will know if you hurt her.”
Sayid stood in the silence, not moving from Hawke’s piercing gaze. He knew enough about Hawke to see that he was serious. Deadly serious. Sayid looked at the smouldering remains of the limousine then looked back at Hawke.
“You are not married to Kristien anymore.” Sayid informed Hawke. “You should leave this country.”
“I tell you what then.” Hawke smirked. “I will give you a sporting chance.” Hawke paused carefully choosing the words he was going to use. “If Kristien allows you, you may wine and dine her, lavish what ever luxuries you want on her and then, when she is ready if she wants to, she can take you to bed and I will back away never to be heard of again.” Hawke laid down the terms of his departure secure in the knowledge that Kristien would never ever go to bed with another man. “Kristien must come to you. Agreed?”
Sayid looked at Hawke not believing what had just been proposed. “You would allow Kristien to choose between us?”
Hawke put on his sunglasses. “Yeah, Kristien is a free spirit and if she wants she can go with who ever she sees fit. No explanation required.” Hawke spoke adding. “It’s better than the fucked up shit you were cooking up.”
Sayid realised that Hawke knew of the conversation between him and Kristien earlier. “Agreed.” Sayid concluded his part of the agreement.
Hawke left Sayid and walked back towards Airwolf. “I’ll give you a head start as I am going off to buy groceries so Kristien is by herself. Good luck.” Hawke gave his parting shot.
Airwolf had just refuelled at twenty thousand feet and was heading out to the Norwegian Basin to see what they could pick up. All the scanners and videos were working overtime trying to pick up the rogue Russian nuclear submarine. Dominic sat at the EDCC watching all the monitors work. Hawke was silent. He was thinking about how he got sandbagged into doing the mission right in the middle of a personal crisis. He reluctantly hugged Kristien and left her in Carsten’s capable hands. Carsten insisted Kristien returned back to the main house so that he could watch over her. Hawke talked Kristien into it as she was happy to remain at the Lodge but she had banned the Secret Service from being there.
“You know String.” Dominic was pressing various buttons and the touch screens to zoom in on a couple of things that the computer had spotted. “Once this Sayid business is over with you and Kristien can get married again.”
Hawke sighed. “Dom, you saw Kristien when I organised the wedding the first time, she was panicked.”
Dominic remembered it too well and the need for religion to help them succeed with their wedding vows. “Well you’ve done it once, hey the next time it will be easier.”
Hawke shook his head. “Nah, we only get one wish granted in a lifetime, that’s the deal.”
Airwolf’s monitors blipped into action. “Bearing 340, 20 miles.” Dominic read off the screen. “We found it String, Russian Sub, jeez you want to see its armarment.”
“Finally! Give me turbo’s and let’s confirm before we head back to Kristien’s.” Hawke replied.
Dominic gave Hawke the turbo’s. “Turbo’s.” He confirmed.
Hawke pressed the turbo’s on the cyclic and Airwolf lurched forward eating up the airspace towards their target. Airwolf’s radar blipped into action again and showed a missile coming their way.
“I can confirm it is the Russian Sub as they have sent up a welcome firework display.” Dominic replied after checking the radar screen. “R-39 Ballistic Missile at 12 o clock and 10 miles.” Dominic read off the missiles dimensions. “That’s one big puppy.”
Hawke released the turbo’s. “Give me a sidewinder.”
Dominic pressed the combat mode and the ADF pod below deployed and the sponsons revealed the chain guns and canons. “Sidewinder.”
Hawke pressed his visor down and used the TADS to find his target. He counted off the seconds and released the sidewinder towards the oncoming missile. A huge fireball erupted in the sky over the ocean as the two missiles met, the shockwave from the warhead was massive. Airwolf’s radar blipped into action yet again.
“What the hell?” Hawke snapped. “Where’s our steath?”
“Bearing 365, 2 miles and closing, 2 R-21 Submarine launched ballistic missiles coming our way.” Dominic read off. “And we’re invisible, String.”
“Give me a bull pup.” Hawke demanded.
“String, this isn’t a search and destroy you know.” Dominic reminded him.
“It is now.” Hawke retorted. “I am fed up with this shit.”
“String, we’re in international waters.” Dominic pleaded.
“Damn it Dom, quit messing about.” Hawke snapped. “How many missiles are you going to let them send our way before you decide to deploy a bullpup?”
Dominic knew Hawke was right and he pressed the bull pup button. “Bull pup.”
“Finally.” Hawke muttered and he targeted the sub just below the water and released a bull pup. “Pop a sunburst.”
Dominic released a sunburst. Hawke pulled Airwolf up and pressed the turbo’s doing a hammer head stall and returned back to the direction they flew from. Only one missile headed for the decoy sunburst and blew up. Down below in the ocean, the bull pup hit the submarine, sending a wall of water up into the sky over 400 feet. The other missile came after Airwolf. Hawke looked at the radar screen with shock. He pressed the turbo’s again and zig zagged Airwolf in the air trying to confuse the missile. The shockwave from the submarine explosion hit Airwolf and knocked all the scanners out.
“String we’re blind up here.” Dominic shouted with absolute shock and started to press various touch screens in Airwolf furiously trying to get them to recalibrate and work. “Recalibrating, come on baby.” Dominic spoke directly to Airwolf. Airwolf’s computers were slowly recovering and recalibrating to come back on line, but not in time to help Hawke.
Hawke pulled Airwolf into a power climb, at around two thousand feet he did a hammer head stall and then went back after the on coming missile. “Red eye now.” Hawke demanded.
Dominic selected the red eye missile for Hawke. “Red eye.”
Hawke saw the on coming missile and counted off the seconds and then pressed the missile button on the cyclic launching the red eye towards the on coming missile. He pulled Airwolf up again into another power climb to get out of the way of the shock wave.
“Get me Archangel. I am fed up with this shit.” Hawke demanded. “We’re not playing target practise for the Russian fleet.”
Dominic tried to contact the FIRM.
“Well?” Hawke demanded.
“I can’t get through.” Dominic replied still trying to raise the FIRM. “It’s not like Archangel has a top secret voicemail on his secure line you know.”
Airwolf’s scramblers sounded and Dominic connected the video secure line. Archangel appeared on the screen looking very flustered.
“Hawke, we’re a bit busy here, what do you want?” Archangel replied.
“You sent us into a right shit storm here and you say you are too busy to hear about it!” Hawke exclaimed not believing Archangel was anything but busy.
“Hawke, one of our aircraft carriers has gone down in the Indian Ocean.” Archangel informed them. “We don’t know why yet.”
“Well your Russian Sub decided to send up its own greeting party.” Hawke informed Archangel. “An R-39 to be precise.”
“The sub attacked you?” Archangel questioned. “Where was your stealth?”
“Well, that’s what we are trying to tell you. We were running at ninety eight percent radar absorption. I don’t think the first missile was for us.” Hawke replied. “It was a long range missile, so we disposed of it, then they sent up two short ranged ones.”
“That sub was shadowing our carrier group from the basin then it broke off.” Archangel started to play devils advocate. “What if that missile was for the carrier group instead of Airwolf?”
“It would make more sense that was one hell of a missile just for us you know.” Hawke replied. “An R-39 would be enough to take out a carrier.”
“Oh God that would mean they were after two carriers.” Archangel replied. “I need to contact the President with this.” Archangel was already reaching for the red phone. “Gentlemen, well done on stopping that sub. Now get yourselves out of there we will be going to DEFCON ONE on this.” Archangel signed off on the secure connection.
