Chapter Six

Hawke woke in the early hours, the pain from his bruising was aching, but as he slowly awoke he felt a different pain. He looked across in the bed but found an empty space where Kristien should be. He pushed himself up and grimaced at the speed that he did it, the pain was quite bad. He walked into the bathroom and saw Kristien on the floor. He rushed over to her and dropped to his knees. Kristien was drenched in sweat and panting quite hard.

“Kristie, oh god not again.” Hawke held her close and rocked her gently, his pain from his injuries panned into insignificance as he shared hers. Hawke blinked back the tears, hoping Kristien wasn’t about to miscarry again.

Kristien knew she and the unborn baby was in trouble. “Get Doctor Parsons.” Kristien managed to say between breaths.

Sarah opened the bedroom door and beckoned for Hawke to come in. She closed the door and Hawke looked at her.

“Right, I have slowed things down, Kristien was going into labour.” The doctor told Hawke.

“Are……they both ok?” Hawke barely wanted to ask the question for fear of the answer.

“Yes, for the moment but I have ordered her to bed, that’s it, no more running about.” Sarah repeated her strict instructions to Hawke. “She can get up for the bathroom no more.” Sarah looked directly at Hawke. “And pack up giving her shocks, she could do without them, she’s twenty six weeks and I would rather she made it to thirty for both of their sakes.”

“Shocks?” Hawke queried thinking it was the unscheduled flying of Airwolf that had brought on these early labour pains.

Sarah picked up her doctors bag and went to go back to the door. She paused and looked at Hawke. Sarah hinted to him. “I don’t fancy signing either of your death certificates because I will put died of breaking each others stubborn hearts, mark my words.” Sarah went to the doorway and walked past Carsten. Carsten stood in the open doorway and motioned to Hawke to come out on to the landing.

Hawke stepped outside the bedroom and looked Carsten up and down. “Shocks?” Hawke demanded an answer.

“How much do you trust Archangel?” Carsten asked ignoring Hawke’s question.

Hawke’s eyebrows raised. “What kind of a question is that?” Hawke was quite shocked with the protection agents question.

“It’s an easy question, do you trust Archangel?.” Carsten looked over at Kristien laid in the bed and shook his head stricken with guilt. “I see you are avoiding the answer.”

“I won’t dignify the question with an answer.” Hawke snapped back in full defence mode.

“Look Hawke nothing here is making sense, you nearly get killed on the way back from the arms deal. Kristien handed over to Byron.” Carsten started to explain. “Everything is pointing back to Archangel here.”

“Archangel is not a mole.” Hawke told Carsten firmly. “He’s a friend.”

“I would be worried that your friend got 6 agents killed and very nearly Kristien.” Carsten added.

“It wouldn’t have been Michael.” Hawke replied shaking his head. “He wouldn’t do that.” Hawke struggled with what was being said.

“So why did he order the attack on Dubawi to get your son out?” Carsten threw the evidence over. “We paid for that by our Carrier going down.” Carsten checked his PDA. “Look Hawke, no one else knew of the second meeting with the Minotaur, someone gave the Minotaur information on who Kristien was and gave Bryon everything he needed.” Carsten put his PDA into his pocket. “Archangel is after Airwolf.” Carsten put forward his theory.

“Michael? Of course he doesn’t want the Lady.” Hawke could not believe where Carsten had pulled this one from. “Michael and I have a deal.”

“What if he had to make a deal with someone else?” Carsten expanded his theory.

“Michael is not a traitor.” Hawke started to pace up and down on the landing, he so wanted to hit Carsten. “So what the hell has all this got to do with what the Doctor said.” Hawke looked at Kristien laid asleep on the four poster bed. “So is what is happening to Kristien and I part of it?” Hawke half didn’t want to know the answer.

“She knows about Diana.” Carsten looked at his PDA. “She received an email in the early hours, with a video attachment, she sent it to me to run tests on it to see if it’s a fake.” Carsten walked away from Hawke. “I couldn’t bull shit her, sorry.”

Hawke stood in the doorway his emotions were pulling him inside out. It slowly dawned on him that Kristien had obviously started working on her laptop in the early hours and despite Carsten’s best efforts to keep the video evidence away from her, somehow she had received it anyway. Hawke walked into the bedroom and closed the door. He took a deep breath and wandered over to the bed. Kristien lay on her side supported by pillows, her arm still with a catheter in. Hawke sat down his back towards her.

“I’m so sorry.” Hawke feebly offered his apology to her, hanging his head in shame.

Kristien looked up at Hawke, her whole body wanted to scream and shout and her rage that she kept deep down was trying to take control. Somehow she kept her composure for their unborn baby’s sake. “I guess sorry is a good start although it is sorely lacking.”

“I was undercover……” Hawke tried to explain.

“Undercover? That make’s it alright then.” Kristien mocked Hawke’s attempt of explaining. “Seriously what do you expect me to do?” Kristien raised her voice and instantly regretted it. “I can’t do this now.” Kristien rubbed her forehead and tried to ease the monster of a headache that she was heading for. The stress her body was under was taking its toll.

“Agreed, you need to rest.” Hawke replied and he turned to her. “But we’re okay aren’t we?”

Kristien looked up at him dreading the question. She remained silent. Hawke grew uncomfortable in the silence. Kristien wasn’t prepared for a full on battle with Hawke. Part of her wanted to push him away permanently for what she had seen, to leave her alone to lick her wounds in private, part of her wanted him to pay dearly for it, an arse kicking everyday for a month at least and one small part of her, the part that craved for him daily wanted to try it for herself. Her conflicting emotions did not rise to the surface, only the part where she wanted to send him back to the cabin. Hawke sensed her wanting to send him home.

“Oh God, don’t tell me we’re not?” Hawke’s chest started to tighten and he was sure that his heart was going to burst from his tight chest and jump into his hands that he held weakly out in front of him. He looked over at Kristien, she still didn’t step in and save him. “Feel free to stop me at any time and tell me what is happening between us.” Hawke gestured his arms open to her.

Kristien knew she couldn’t keep this going any further, she was going to have to send him back for her to deal with the betrayal, quietly. Maybe some time apart would help her with some clarity with the situation she was forced to deal with on top of everything else. Perhaps a separation for a period of time, she mused. “Just go back to the cabin……….” Kristien started to say.

“What?” Hawke struggled with what was happening inside Kristien’s mind, he was not about to give up on a relationship that he wanted to be in. He had been here before with Tess Rodgers. Back then he was young and she wanted so much that not only did she terminate their relationship that Hawke had invested so much of himself into but their baby too.

“Please don’t do this.” Hawke begged her and looked at her. Their eyes met and instantly they saw each others troubled thoughts in their minds and their deep pain and forbidden love for each other in their tortured souls. Hawke’s full of remorse and guilt and wanting so desperately to put things right, to turn back time if he could.

“You hurt me Stringfellow Hawke.” Kristien finally admitted to him and she gently rubbed her small bump for comfort, to try and remind herself that she did love Hawke, although she had never said it to him. Hawke sat waiting patiently for the rebuke of the century and was happy to take it. Kristien shook her head. “You may as well have driven a stake into my heart, I am so hurt, so wounded.” Kristien looked up at Hawke. “I can’t believe that video, what the hell were you doing?” Kristien asked rhetorically.

Hawke looked at Kristien, knowing he had hurt her yet again. His blue brooding piercing eyes met hers and he saw her shattered heart, something he had managed to do by allowing Diana do a blow job on him when he went undercover for the FIRM. He waited for Kristien to gather some strength to hopefully kick him up the arse for being a twat. She had none. He looked at her, she was empty of any love towards him, just full of hurt and deep open wounds.

Hawke sat in the silence not moving, not daring to breathe. What he would give to hold her in his arms and give her the strength to give him a well deserved bollocking. Kristien allowed the powerful drugs that Doctor Parsons had given her start to take effect and she finally closed her eyes. Hawke quietly walked to the door and opened it and found Alfred ready to come in with a tray of coffee and tea for them both.

“You weren’t thinking of leaving Master Stringfellow.” Alfred asked as he stepped in through the open door. Alfred walked into the bedroom and placed the tray on the table and chairs over near the window. He watched Hawke close the door and walk over to the table and picked up the coffee and drank its black liquid. Alfred placed a cooling gel pack on Kristien’s forehead and he pulled a blanket over her.

Hawke watched Alfred tend to Kristien. Alfred looked over at Hawke and beckoned for him to come over. Hawke finished up his coffee and walked over. Alfred stood close to Hawke. “Don’t let her get angry and don’t let her push you away.” Alfred told him. “You can get through this but you do have a decision to make about your career choice.” Alfred patted Hawke affectionately on his shoulder and motioned for Hawke to lay down with Kristien. Hawke looked at Alfred and watched him close all the curtains. The bedroom became dark and Alfred lit a couple of scented candles on his way out and nodded to Hawke again.

Hawke gently laid down on the bed next to Kristien. Kristien on feeling Hawke moved her body and turned over and she put her hand in his. Hawke repositioned the gel on her forehead for her. Hawke didn’t know how long they lay together but time seemed to pass so slowly. Hawke stroked his thumb over the top of her hand, Kristien slowly opened her eyes and looked at Hawke who had been quietly sobbing whilst she had managed a small nap.

“I am sorry if I have been distant lately.” Hawke apologised to her, it felt feeble as he said it and lacked depth and meaning, but he didn’t know how else to say to her that he was living her brutal rape in day dreams, usually with him as the sick perpetrator. He tried to allow his talk with Megan help him. “Kristie do you have faith in me?”

“Where’s this coming from?” Kristien asked really not wanting a deep and heavy conversation about life stuff but knew she would have to answer to him sooner rather than later. She moved the gel from her head as it was no longer cooling.

“You’re avoiding the question.” Hawke told her quietly.

“String when I hear a perfectly good question I will answer it, the fact I am carrying your baby, that really should say it all to you.” Kristien replied and she pushed herself up in bed.

Hawke looked at her and his eyes filled with tears of happiness about the mention of his baby, his eyes continued to meet hers. “Do you have faith in me?” Hawke repeated the question.

Kristien frowned at him. “Yes of course I do, why would you think otherwise?”

Hawke shrugged his shoulders, his eyes still homed in on hers.

“Hmmm now who is avoiding.” Kristien stated.

“I keep letting you down.” Hawke started to explain and Kristien was just about to jump in when Hawke gently placed a finger on her lips. “I allowed you to get kidnapped and Bryon beat you and raped you.”

Kristien froze and shuddered with the words that Hawke uttered to her. Her mind flashed through the images of the brutal beating and rape again. Hawke’s mind too joined in the distressing images. Kristien noticed this. “String?”

Hawke’s eyes full of tears, now turned to tears of sorrow, looked at her, his throat was threatening to close again. “Yeah.” He managed to whisper.

“What are you seeing?” Kristien carefully asked.

Hawke looked at her and he gently touched her face with his hand. Her soft skin felt so warm with his touch. As he looked at her again he saw the image of her bloodied body with his hand around her throat. He backed away from Kristien, shocked and sickened by what he had just seen. Kristien held his hand firmly, not allowing him to back away, everything was connected, her pain and his.

“I don’t want to hurt you.” Hawke whispered, his voice cracking under the strain. Kristien’s other hand reached out and she placed it on Hawke’s damp face. He was so desperately trying to block the images that he did not realise that he had started to quietly sob again. Years of pain trickling out, but never coming to the surface to fully heal. In that brief second Kristien intuitively realised that Hawke’s brooding and immense pain was trying to pull him back to the safety of the cabin, where he could engorge on self pity and relive the vivid shocking images of her brutal ordeal in a place far away from her. Their complicated bond that combined them together that had kept her mind safe during the ordeal in Dubawi had somehow transferred and twisted the whole ordeal in Hawke’s brooding soul.

Hawke held onto her hand, fighting his emotions of pushing her away, to keep her safe from him. He caressed her hair and face and slowly she drifted off to sleep again. Hawke too was emotionally drained and tried to close his eyes but couldn’t. He knew he had hurt her deeply and wanted to try to make amends, but he felt at a loss as to where to start. Just as he started to brood deeply he entered Kristien’s mind again. He opened up her shattered heart and he felt for the first time all of her pain and hurt that she had kept from him since their first meeting. Hawke at first was overwhelmed by the immense pain, comparable to his, and then as he allowed it to wash over him he saw a very lonely small girl stood with only horses around her protecting her from a deep darkness that was all around.

A darkness that he was so familiar with.
