(Marines guard a security checkpoint in the drain system. A light flashes on a panel)
Marine1: Movement. Beyond the perimeter in tunnel #37.
Marine2: No teams are in play right now.
Marine3: Let's get the lights on.
(Marine2, 3, 4 grab up weapons and leave the checkpoint. Marine1 stays at the panel.)
(Follow the Marines as they jog through the tunnel. Sensors and cameras dot the passage, along with claymore mines, barbed wire barricades that close off half of the tunnel and cable runs. They slow to round the barricades and run to catch up.)
(They fetch up against a barricade that isn't folded. Weapons point out through the wires into the darkness beyond)
Marine3: Talk to me.
Marine1: (voice) Whatever it is, it's coming straight for the courtyard.
Marine2: I see something.
(Beyond the wires, a torch appears. Some movement in the light of the flame as it comes closer)
Marine3: Halt! Who goes there?
Styles: Ramirez?
Marine3: Give the password, advance and be recognized.
Styles: The password had better be hot shower and if you're between me and it-
Janet: Us and it.
Styles: Us and the showers, you will regret-
Marine3: Deenergize the fence! It's them!
Marine1: Who them?
(Styles and Janet walk into the light of the Marine's flashlights)
Styles: Us them.

(A Hummer screams down the drain tunnel. It stops beneath a grate. Styles and Janet get out and climb a ladder up into the Earthling building. It's dark, late at night. Brown rushes into view, still buttoning his shirt. He wears an arm brassard that indicates he's the Officer Of The Day.)
Brown: Oh, my god! Janet! Sergeant! You're back!
Styles: Oh, it's good to be back, sir.
Janet: Nice to see you, Captain. (he offers a hand, she grabs him in a hug.)
Brown: They're getting the Colonel, the Major… Well, everyone.
Styles: Are they waking up any cooks?
Brown: We got that call from Security #20. The cooks were up to start breakfast. I had the SOG run your order over.
Styles: Oh, good, I haven't had a steak in about a million years. I wonder if I can eat it in the shower?
Janet: So, who's the liaison now?
Brown: Uh, Drury came in a while back.
Janet: Drury? That's a human name?
Brown: He's the human liaison.
Janet: No, no. The SID liaison. Anyone we know?
Brown: Janet, the SID liaison is Vertag.
Janet: They said that he left!
Brown: He did. He came back. He and Perez went to get some T-Rex specimens-
Janet: I need a truck. I need to get over there.
Brown: Uh, yeah. (waves to a Marine) Get Miss Crane here up to Vertag's room.
Marine5: If' you'll come this way, ma'am. (They walk off screen. Janet's smile grows wider with every moment)
Styles: You got the whole order, right? The ice cream? The roast? The tortillas?
Brown: Everything. They promised to do right by you, Sergeant.
Styles: Great. Then I have this little list. I need a flamethrower for this spider I met…
Perez: (running up in half uniform. Pants and t-shirt) Styles! You're alive!
Styles: So far. (rubs her arm) Not sure how much will be left of me after the shower, Major.
Perez: I'll be glad if anything's left. Where's Crane?
Brown: She's headed over to see Vertag.
Perez: She is? Did you tell her?
Brown: Oh, crap. No, I didn't.
Styles: Tell her what?
(Janet steps out of an elevator that opens into the bedroom assigned to her in the HQ building. She barely glances around and runs through the door and down the hall. She slips through the cracked-open door of Vertag's room. Runs to the floor just under the head of the bed.
Janet: Vertag!
Vertag: (mumbles)
Janet: VERTAG! Wake up, you big git!
Vertag: Janet?
Janet: Hey! (he reaches down and picks the woman up. Sits up in the bed and scoots back to the headboard. Moves his pillow around to his lap and sets her down on it.)
Vertag: You're back. Welcome back.
Janet: Thanks.
Vertag: Is…
Janet: Styles is okay. She's getting a shower. Or three.
Vertag: Great. I've, uh… I've missed you. (lays his hand beside where she sits on the pillow)
Janet: I missed you. (strokes the hand) I don't think I've ever felt as safe as I do right now.
Vertag: We looked everywhere.
Janet: That's what the perimeter guards said. But we avoided the dumpsters. Too many dangers.
Vertag: I was afraid of that. So. Tell me everything.
Janet: Well, the flooding of the drains…. (Pauses, glares up at him) Who flooded the drains, anyway?
Vertag: This guy. A strange man, never saw him before in my life. Came over the wall, ran into the Tank room, threatened to bomb the Tank if we didn't let him throw the valve. (he has a difficulty keeping a straight face)
Janet: Uh huh. Well, if it was life or death, I forgive…him. So, anyway, I caught up to Styles and kept her head above water.
Vertag: Wait, wait. (shoves the blankets next to him.) Wake up so she doesn't have to repeat herself.
Lessala: (mumbles, sits up. Her hair is disheveled, her lingerie slightly askew.) What time is it?
Janet: Very early. (She smiles, Vertag smiles)
Lessala: Janet? Oh, crap! (rolls out of the bed and scurries across the room.) I'm sorry, Janet! I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. (she grabs a robe off of a chair and leaves)
Janet: What the hell?
Vertag: I have no idea.
Janet: Well? Let's go after her!
Vertag: Right. (Puts the pillow down on the sheets, starts to throw back the covers. Pauses) You're going to need to close your eyes.
Janet: What? No.
Vertag: Okay. (lifts Lessala's pillow and dumps it on Janet. Camera watches the cushion bulge and shift as she tunnels out)
Janet: Dammit! What the- (grunt) Stupid way to- (grunt) It's like wrestling the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. (her head appears at the side just as Vertag's hand descends to pick her up)
(They walk down the hall to Janet's room. Lessala is grabbing stuff and thrusting it into a duffel bag)
Lessala: I'm sorry, Janet! I'm sorry! I'll be out of here in a few moments.
Vertag: (blocks the door) Not likely.
Lessala: Vertag! Look, I'll quit. I'll stay away. I won't bother you. You two. Either of you. It was good, but you… You guys….
Janet: I think she's embarrassed. What, she thinks I don't know that giants have a sex life?
Vertag: I think she thinks that you and I think we're a couple.
Janet: You think so?
Vertag: I think I think so.
Janet: (Giggles) Lessala, that's silly!
Vertag: I don't know how silly it is, but it's certainly wrong.
Lessala: What? You guys aren't…
Vertag: A couple? Nope. Just partners.
Janet: And friends. I really like the big galoot, but he's not my type.
Vertag: Oh, no.
Lessala: (slows and pauses) What?
Janet: We're not a couple. We aren't going to be a couple. You're not trespassing.
Vertag: She isn't angry.
Lessala: Really? (sniffles)
Janet: Really. (holds her hands out) He's my friend. YOU are my friend. If you're together, I'm happy for you.
Lessala: (takes Janet from Vertag's hand, hugs the human to her cheek) Oh, I was so afraid you were dead!
Janet: Urk!
Lessala: I moved in here to be close to you, or, you know, to remember you. Then Vertag and I…
Janet: Urggle!
Vertag: She can't breathe.
Lessala: OH! Sorry. (relaxes hold) So tell me all about it!
Janet: Well, the squad got back, so you know-
Vertag: I think I'm going to make coffee. Let's do this in the kitchen. (They start to walk out)
(In the Marine Intelligence Tent, Peterson turns off a speaker.)
Peterson: Okay, then. No fights, no accusations, no murders.
Brown: See? No problems.
Perez: You still should have told her.
Adams: That would have involved getting in her way. It sounds like she wouldn't have put up with a whole lot of that.
Brown: No, sir.
------------
(Lessala sits at her desk in Reception. Vertag stands behind her. Humans are on her desk. SID minions scatter around the office.)
Lessala: (read from notebook) Okay, busy day today. Attache Drury, you're taking a…color detail?
Drury: That's right.
Lessala: What color?
Vertag: That's probably not an important detail.
Lessala: Okay. Okay, you and the detail are going with Officer Stogga to the house of the interrupted birthday party. You're paying for the toy truck, the cake and the hot dog, and giving them the price of a human bounty.
Drury: And a truck.
Lessala: Oh, yes. A stripped-down Hummer for the birthday boy. Janet, this evening you're going to Shallet's house, with Officer Vertag, to induct her in the Royal Order of the Thistle, with the Queen's thanks for her assistance in your safe return. And paying her the price of a human bounty.
Janet: Too bad we can't actually make her a princess.
Peterson: Well, Lance Corporal Fustav is technically heir to a crown that doesn't exist any more. If he married her-
Vertag: No.
Lessala: And Sergeant Styles-
Adams: That would be newly commissioned Lieutenant Styles.
Lessala: Oh, yeah! Congratulations! You're going with Officer Churrech to collect some humans at the Socket Street Market.
Styles: They're collecting humans. I'm taking a flamethrower. I have an appointment with Shelob.
Lessala: Um…okay. Minions who have not been named have their assignments already? (Minions nod their heads) Then right now, Janet, Vertag and I are going to process humans past the two-week delay. Any questions? (Many shake heads) Then let's get to it.
------
(Charity stands in a tent. There are many soft chairs and sofas, some tables, magazine racks, laptop computers. There is a steam line across the back of the room where cooks are setting up foods. There is a junior officer standing next to the interviewer)
Charity: This is the welcome room. The first place humans see after the giants turn them over to Earth custody. Lieutenant, could you explain what this room is for?
Lieutenant: This is a decompression chamber, ma'am. For the past two weeks, they've been living in The Tank. They have food and water, fresh clothes, and no giant threats-
Charity: Except the giants of the Exchange, of course.
LT: Well, no. I was thinking more of giant rats, giant bugs, giant spiders, giant cats. But once they're in Agent Vertag's area, he takes his responsibility to the safety of each human very seriously. He won't tolerate any of his people bothering the humans. He won't tolerate any of the humans bothering other humans.
Charity: Uh-huh. Okay, so what happens when they transfer.
LT: (points) The Transfer Case is put down next to that door, the refugees come out. We already started their interviews while they're in the tank. We greet them, get them a place to sit. They start living in a room where everything's human sized, and of Earth manufacture. And they get to eat.
Charity: Haven't they been eating?
LT: The giants provide a sort of kibble for humans. Over here we have a fine team of cooks that take great pride in serving the finest human food on the planet.
Cooks (together): Ooorah!
Charity: Oh rah, indeed. So. They get comfortable, they get comfort food, then what?
LT: The chaplains and the psyche personnel are standing by to see if they need any sort of help transitioning. We've alerted Earth about any personnel in the Tank, so there's eMail and oMate messages waiting for them. This is the point that many of them say it starts to feel real.
Charity: Real? That they're actually going home?
LT: Yes, ma'am.
Charity: And how long are they in here?
LT: Doctor Roth and his people take them in one at a time for a physical. Then they are invited to walk over to their barracks and get some sleep.
Charity: Invited?
LT: Colonel Adams feels very strongly that we should give them every possible chance to exercise their free will. Lord knows, they haven't had too much of that here.
Charity: I suppose so. Well, thank you, Lieutenant. I guess we'll be seeing you at the transfer.
LT: Yes, ma'am. Um. About that? The Colonel wanted me to remind you that you may be asked to leave some of the refugees alone. Or even to leave.
Charity: I have their permission to film the process, to follow them along.
LT: Yes, ma'am, but remember, some of them aren't sure this isn't a big giant plot of some kind. They may have felt that they were under duress. Your agreements won't really be valid until well after they return.
Charity: I… I see what you mean. We'll be sensitive to their situation.
LT: Thank you, ma'am.
Charity: (to camera) So. We'll be trying to get interviews, first impressions of freedom, from the refugees, but you heard the lieutenant. They may not be prepared to trust us.
(View of the Tank room from the row of interview stations on the floor. Vertag and Lessala walk in. Vertag lifts the Transfer Case to the roof of the Tank.)
Vertag: Alright, let's get you people to your people.
(shifts to above giants' heads. See a pack of people on top of the Tank. Expressions include hopeful, fearful, angry, stoic. Janet is in the closed-off part of the Transfer Case.)
(Vertag reads names off of a clipboard. A human steps forward. Lessala whips out a magnifying glass and compares the human to a picture on a sheet of portraits. She and Janet nod and the human moves into the Transfer Case. Some are holding hands with people leave only with regrets. After three or four names Vertag pauses.)
Vertag: There are three names here with asterisks. What is the asterisk for?
Lessala: Those are the Husseins. (Close up of a family of five. Man and two boys surround a woman and a little girl protectively) Dad and the two sons were caught gathering food. The mom and her daughter were caught and turned in a week later as they looked for their men.
Vertag: And the women haven't been in The Tank for two weeks?
Lessala: Nope.
Vertag: Much as I'd like to keep the family together, the rules are explicit. (bends his head towards the little family) We've already spent the money to the people that collected you. My government is in a hurry to get the technical knowledge that money was to pay for. So, you three do have to get into the Case. You two cannot. (Waves his hand over the five. They tearfully part. The man pulls his sons by the arm into the case.)
(inside the case)
Hussein Son1: This is outrageous! We can't leave them-
Hussein: Allah will watch over your mother and sister.
Hussein Son2: I trust Allah, but not the giants.
Janet: (through grate) Just wait, please. Give them a moment.
(Vertag's pocket rustles. Someone says 'Ahem!')
Vertag: You know, she looks pale.(Close up on Mrs. Hussein's dark, worried face)
Lessala: She is pale, doesn't she?
Vertag: We could put you into human custody if there was an emergency. Say if you were experiencing…appendicitis.
(The mother grabs her side and expresses pain.)
Vertag and Lessala together: Other side.
(She grabs her other side and grimaces. Vertag pulls Doctor Cheryl out of his pocket and places her on the Tank. She wears a brightly colored harness that has a leash. He pinches the end as she walks to Mrs. Hussein.)
Cheryl: (brief examination, touches forehead, prods at the belly) It could be her appendix. (glances down at the girl clutching mommy's leg) It might be a flu, though.
Lessala: Oh, no! Not a flu. Those can be lethal for Little People, can't they?
Vertag: And very contagious, right?
Cheryl: Yes and yes. To be on the safe side, we should probably get all of these people into Earthling medical care.
Janet: Earth will honor all those transfers.
Vertag: I guess you're going to have to get the full list of humans in the Tank, Lessala. We're going to have to process every-
(Lessala takes his clipboard, turns the pad of paper over, hands it back)
Vertag: Well, look at that. Hussein, Sophia, come forward, please.
(Down in the interview row, Charity turns to a Marine Sergeant.)
Charity: Are they…cheating?
Sergeant: No, ma'am. The giants are sticklers for the established routines and procedures that have been established. If any word were to get back to SID, it would be that the people who coordinate the Exchange are professional and careful. Courteous, of course, but scrupulous.
Charity: Of course, Sergeant. (In the background, giant legs turn to leave the Tank Room.) Oh, heck, let's go. (Cameraman lifts his unit from the tripod, follows Charity and another tech as they leg it down the corridor to the wall, then across the yard to the Earthling Building)
(They get to the reception tent just as Lessala kneels to lower the Transfer Case to the floor. They rush inside. A door opens and a few humans hesitantly shuffle through. They look around in suspicion.)
Adams: Welcome. Welcome. You're safe, now. (He shakes some hands. Marines escort individuals, couples and families to seats. One man shrugs off his escort and walks to the cooks)
Charity: (to camera) Come on! (They follow Mr. Lubner)
Lubner: (To cook) Son, I'm Art Lubner. Do you have something for me?
Cook: Yes, sir. (smiling) First time anyone's ordered a shrimp, anchovy, clam and feta pizza, but I think I did it pretty well, if I do say so my self. (Another cook hands him a 20-inch pizza) Do you want it cut in 8ths or 4ths?
Lubner: Hang on. (Pinches a few bites off of the pizza, nibbles.) Hrhn. (turns and walks away. The cook never stops smiling. Charity runs after the refugee)
Charity: Mr. Lubner, was it? Sir, why aren't you eating your pizza?
Lubner: What, that crap? I only asked for it because I figured the giants couldn't fake it.
Charity: Ah. So now you know that this is real?
Lubner: Not yet, missy. If they'd gotten the food wrong, I'd know it was a scam. They got that right, I still don't know if it isn't.
Charity: Well, sir, it's not. I hope you find something to help you relax soon.
Lubner: We'll see. (turns to a hovering Marine) How many Reader's Digest back issues do you have?
Marine: Back to 1993, sir.
Lubner: Let's see 'em.
Charity: (walking back to the cooks) I guess that this planet just builds paranoia. (To cook) How did that feel, all that work and he was just testing your?
Cook: Ma'am, I'm here to feed these people and make them happy. If he can't find any fault with my food, that's a plus on my side.
Charity: DO you think that the giants could mimic Earth foods that well?
Cook: (Shrugs) Only giant food I've ever had was dinosaur. (leans to camera and whispers) And to be frank, he overcooked it. Dinosaur needs a light touch on the flames.
(Charity stares at him, turns to stare at the camera, dumbfounded)
(Outside the tent, Lessala lifts the Transfer Case up. Vertag holds it while she lifts Janet out of the little chamber)
Lessala: Another happy transfer completed without bloodshed. (the giants walk carefully out of the Human Building)
Janet: How about lunch? I have a taste for seafood, suddenly.
