Chapter 8
Arlington, VA – Maya’s Townhouse 10:00 AM Maya stood in her bedroom looking around at the mess that had been left. She had never felt so violated in her life and wished she could walk right back down those stairs and out her front door. Skinner walked up behind her and put his arm around her. “We can tackle this when you are ready, Maya. Give it a few days, we can come back.” She nodded and began to gather her things for the week. Crawling around she began to sort through her suits that had been tossed about the room. She began to pile them in two piles on her bed. When she came to her drawers with her contents dumped out all over the floor she broke down. Skinner sat next to her on the floor and pulled her into his arms as she cried. “I’m so sorry that this happened baby. I’m sorry I got you involved in all this.” He said trying to comfort her. “Oh Walter, this isn’t your fault. I’ll be fine, really.” She blew her nose and wiped her eyes trying to pull herself together. She took a deep breath and started sorting through her things again. Skinner sat back and watched her. He didn’t want her to see the anger that was raging within him over this. It hurt him to see her going through this and that she was even brought into any of this. He knew that the case would have been at a standstill if it wasn’t for her though. He stood up and left the room to give Maya some time alone. He headed downstairs into her living room. Her town house was small but a nice size for one person. It was three stories with a large master bedroom and smaller room used as an office upstairs. The first level was the living room which connected to an open kitchen and a lower level garage. He walked around the room clearing a path and picking up objects that had been thrown aside during her break in. He noticed a photo album and picked it up bring it with him to a soft beige sofa. He sat down and began flipping through the album which provided him with a peak into Maya’s life. He couldn’t help but smile looking at the pictures of her and assorted friends and family in various locations. He had a hard time taking his eyes off her in the photos. She had a smile that could light up a room and was contagious. She exuded sexuality but also a sweetness that made her approachable. He began to notice several pictures of her with a handsome older man. One in particular she had her arms wrapped around the man smiling with eyes shining while the man, who towered over her by at least a foot, kissed the top of her head. Skinner couldn’t help but feel a slight surge of jealousy run through him. He didn’t know much about Maya’s past other than the brief conversations they had managed to have in the past week. He turned the page and came to another picture of her with the same man, this one with her bent over laughing as he tickled her sides, laughing just as hard as she. It wasn’t until he came across a photo of the man in an Air Force uniform that he realized that the man was probably her father. Skinner closed the album and looked around the room. He imagined that she probably had a very nice place before the break in. The colors were soft and cheery with a woman’s touch to the décor. He heard footsteps approach and saw Maya making her way through the mess towards him. He cleared off the section of the couch next to him to make room for her to sit next to him. Zipping up the last garment bag, Maya took one last look around her disheveled room. She placed everything she needed for the week near the bedroom door and headed downstairs to find Walter. She looked around for a second when she noticed he was sitting with one of her photo albums in his lap. She walked over to him and plopped herself on the couch next to him grabbing the album from his lap. Opening the album, he had looked at a moment before, she paged to a picture of herself standing on a beach. The beach could have been anywhere but it was how happy the woman was at the moment that picture had been taken. “You’d think with how much I love the beach that I would have ended up living near one.” She said looking at the picture. “Why did you want to stay in DC?” “Oh, I don’t really know. Something about it just keeps me here.” She flipped to another page in the album. “Ever consider leaving? Going back to California maybe?” She could feel him sit back and place his arm around the back of the couch. She sat back into him and thinking about his question. “There’s nothing left for me to go back to in California, not anymore.” She slid a picture out of the protective sleeve and sat looking at it. It was one of her and the older man. “Dad passed last year.” “What about your mother?” “We lost her to cancer when I was fourteen. Sorry Walter, this just isn’t something I talk about.” She closed the album still holding the photo in her hand. “Dad always said we were made from the same mold. I see a lot of myself in him. I think a huge part of why I have never been able to settle down was due to seeing him go through women like they were pairs of socks after mom had died.” “He never remarried?” “Dad never wanted to remarry. He once told me that mom was the love of his life and he wanted to preserve her memory. To be honest, I saw right through that, Dad loved being single. He had a woman for every day of the week.” She let out a deep sigh and set the picture down next to her. “Sometimes, I wonder if I am too much like him.” “We make our own choices Maya. I am guilty myself of keeping people at an arm’s length. Never letting anyone in, pushing those close to me away. I suppose we need to ask ourselves what it is we really want out of the relationships in our lives.” “What do you want Walter?” She asked, laying her head on his shoulder. It took a moment for him to answer and then, “I used to think that I didn’t want anyone, that I was meant to be alone.” Another pause, “That was until I met you.” Maya sat still absorbing this. She wasn’t sure that she heard his words correctly. She lifted her head and shifted her body so that she could better see him. Scanning his face for clarification she spoke carefully. “Do you think you could be happy with someone like me, Walter?”She asked. “What I do know is that in a matter of days, I have never been happier. I’d like to see where things go, that is if you are interested in something more with me.” He responded searching her eyes as he spoke. “You have no idea.” She said leaning into kiss him.
