We woke up the next morning to the sound of someone knocking on the door. “Oh shit.” I hissed as I hunted for a top to throw on while Daryl put his pants back on. I’d just managed to slip into Daryl’s top that I had left on the floor last night as Daryl opened the door. “Its fine I know she’s here.” Anna said walking past Daryl into the room. “How?” Daryl asked back to his gruff self. “Really? You need me to answer that? Where else would she have spent the night?” Anna joked and I started to blush. “Here I brought you these coz I guessed you could use them.” Anna continued throwing a top and some clean underwear in my direction. “Right I’ll leave you two love birds to it. I’ll meet you in the kitchen when you’re ready.” She said leaving. “Oh god! I’m so sorry!” I said already getting changed. “Don’t worry she won’t tell anybody.” I added. It had been an amazing night but I today I didn’t even have the confidence to look at him for more than a few moments. “I’ll come by again later if you want?” I asked trying to stop my voice from shaking. “Yer...sure.” he said nonchalantly reaching for the half full bottle of southern comfort from the night before. “See you at breakfast.” I called before I left his room and headed for the kitchen.
I entered the kitchen just a few moments before Jenner. I sat beside Anna who was still grinning at me, probably hungry for the details from the night before. Jenner couldn’t have been in the room for more than a minute or two before Dale spoke up “doctor, I don’t mean to slam you with questions first thing...” “But you will anyway.” Jenner countered sounding slightly amused. “We didn’t come here for the eggs.” Andrea said. By this point everyone was in the room so Jenner directed us to follow him to the main room. “Vi, give me play back of TS-19” Jenner said as we entered the room and walked to the middle just in front of the large screen. “Playback of TS-19.” Vi’s voice came over the sound system. “Few people ever got a chance to see this, very few.” Jenner stated as the Video loaded. It appeared to be some sort of brain scan but I couldn’t tell what any of the data meant. “Is that a brain?” Carl asked with a childlike fascination. “An extraordinary one. Not that it really matters in the end.” Jenner answered before giving another command to Vi “take us in for E.I.V.” “Enhanced internal View.” Vi’s voice came again. “What are those lights?” Shane asked. “It looks like brain activity.” I said in awe. “Jenner nodded to me and said “that’s right. It’s a person’s life... experiences, memories. It’s everything. Somewhere in all that organic wiring, all those ripples of light is you... the thing that makes you unique and human.” “You don’t make sense ever?” Daryl asked. “No... It’s why even science has a hard time explaining some things.” I said with a grin. “Those are synapses, electric impulses in the brain that carry all the messages. They determine everything a person says, does, thinks from the moment of birth to the moment of death.” Jenner continued addressing us all. “Death? That’s what this is, a Vigil?” Rick asked “yes... or rather the play back of one.” Jenner answered. “This person died? Who?” Andrea asked. “Test subject 19. Someone who was bitten and infected and volunteered to have us record the process.” He answered before giving an order to Vi “Vi, scan forward to first event.” “Scanning to first event.” Vi’s voice came out the ether. We watched as it zoomed out showing the whole brain again and saw a dark vain from the brain stem to the centre of the brain. “What is that?” Glenn asked “I think it’s the decease.” I said cautiously. “Right again. It invades the brain like meningitis. The adrenal glands haemorrhage, the brain goes into shutdown, then the major organs, then death. Everything you ever were or ever will be gone.” Jenner answered. “Is that what happened to Jim?” we heard Sophia ask quietly. “Yes.” Carol answered simply. Andrea took a deep breath “she lost somebody two days ago, her sister.” Laure explained. “I lost somebody too. I know how devastating it is. Scan to second event.” Jenner said sympathetically to Andrea be for adding the order to Vi. “Scanning to second event.” Vi parroted. We watched as new lights started to appear in the brain this time red. “The resurrection times vary wildly. We had reports of it happening in as little as three minutes. The longest we heard of was eight hours. In the case of this patient, it was two hours, one minute, seven seconds.” Jenner explained. “It restarts the brain?” Laurie asked a note of horror in her voice. “No, just the brain stem. Basically gets them up and moving.” Jenner answered. “But they’re not alive?” Rick asked. “You tell me...” Jenner countered. “It’s nothing like before. Most of that brain is dark.” Rick answered. “Dark, lifeless, dead. The frontal lobe, the neocortex, the human part, that doesn’t come back. The you part. Just a shell driven by instinct.” Jenner clarified. We carried on watching as something tore through the brain. “God, what was that?” Carol asked “he shot his patient in the head. Didn’t you?”Andrea explained. “Vi, power down the main screen and the workstations.” Jenner gave the order to Vi and avoided Andrea’s question, Vi repeated the command. “You have no idea what it is, do you?” Andrea asked her voice shaking slightly. “It could be microbial, Viral, parasitic, fungal.” Jenner explained. “Or the wrath of god?” Jacque asked. “There is that.” Jenner said with a slight smile. “Somebody must know something. Somebody, somewhere.” Andrea said “there are others right? Other facilities?” Carol asked. “There may be some. People like me.” Jenner said. “But you don’t know? How can you not know?” Rick asked starting to los is temper. “Everything went down. Communications, directives, all of it. I’ve been in the dark for almost a month. .” Jenner explained. “So it’s not just here. There’s nothing left anywhere? Nothing? That’s what you’re really saying right?” Andrea accused. “Jesus.” Jacque let slip. “Man, I’m gonna get shitfaced drunk, again.” Daryl said resting his face in his hands. “Even England?” Anna let the question slip from her lips. Jenner gave a small sad nod. “Oh god...” I cursed as I felt the tears starting to form in my eyes, I reached for Anna and pulled her close burying my face in the nape of her neck feeling my own neck becoming wet from Anna’s quiet tears. This had just confirmed that that there was no chance of us ever getting home. We had no idea what was happening to our loved ones. “Dr. Jenner, I know this has been taxing for you and I hate to ask one more question, but that clock, it’s counting down. What happens at zero?” dale asked. “The basement generators, they run out of fuel.” Jenner explained. “And then? Vi, what happens when the power runs out?” Rick asked angrily “when the power runs out, facility wide decontamination will occur.” Vi’s voice came out over the sound system. “That’s not good.” I said to Anna feeling the panic rise up.
Rick had directed most of us to go back to our rooms for the time being while he and a few others went to check the basement. “so this is happening all over then?” Anna asked once we reached our room, she sounded defeated. “looks that way...” I answered whipping a stray tear away. “fuck this.” Anna said reaching for the bottle I left for her “there’s no point dwelling on it, there’s fuck all we can do about it.” She continued taking a swig from the bottle before handing it to me. “I guess... I’m so sorry I got us into this mess.” I said before taking a drink. “hey, how were you to know?” she said pulling me into a hug before continuing with “so let’s just try to forget about it... tell me about what happened last night instead... I think it would cheer us both up a little.” I gave a small smile as I spoke “I’d be fucked without you, you know... ok well I spilt southern comfort on my top...” “well that’s a good start.” Anna joked I gave a small laugh before I continued “so I asked to borrow a top and then as I was getting changed he came up behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist... and it all happened from there...” “so are you guys a couple now or what?” Anna asked in her no nonsense manner. “I don’t know... we haven’t really talked since it happened... I told him I’d see him this afternoon but after this I don’t really feel like it...” I answered honestly. “you’re kidding right? Woman you are crazy about him! And don’t tell me your not! I know you remember!” Anna scolded me, took another drink before continuing “ and he seems sweet...it’s well hidden but I can see it and I know you do to! So you better go over there and tell him how you feel before I kick your arse and do it for you!” she finished grinning. “fine, I’m going... I’m going...” I said starting to smile and heading to the door just as the lights went out “I guess it will have to wait.” I said opening the door Anna close behind me.
“what’s going on? Why I everything turned off?” we heard Daryl’s voice from down the hall. Jenner took the bottle from his hand and continued walking down the corridor towards us answering “energy use is being prioritised. “air isn’t a priority? And lights?” dale said from the doorway beside us. “it’s not up to me. Zone 5 is shutting itself down.” Jenner explained still walking. “Hey! Hey! What the hell does that mean? Hey man, I’m talking to you. What do you mean it’s shutting its self down? How can a building do anything?” Daryl was saying following Jenner close behind and starting to lose his temper. We all ended up following him waiting for answers all the way to the main room. “you’d be surprised.” Jenner replied simply walking to the middle of the room. We heard Laurie yell to Rick below. “Jenner, what’s happening?” Rick asked Jenner. “the system is dropping all nonessential uses of power. It’s designed to keep the computers running to the last possible second. That started as we approached the half-hour mark. Right on schedule.” Jenner explained before adding vaguely “ it was the French,” “what?” Andrea asked. “ they were the last to hold out as far as I know. While our people were bolting out the doors and committing suicide in the hallways, they stayed in the labs till the end. They thought they were close to a solution.” Jenner explained. “what happened?” Jacque asked. “the same thing that’s happening here. No power grid. Ran out of juice. The world runs on fossil fuels, I mean how stupid is that?” Jenner explained. “let me tell you...” Shane began before Rick interrupted “ to hell with it, Shane. I don’t even care. Lori grab our things. Everybody, get you stuff. We’re getting out of here now!” Rick was starting to lose his temper. Then a siren started to go off, it was deafening. Jenner walked over to one of the computers as Daryl yelled “dc, what going on here?!” the siren stopped. “everybody, y’all heard Rick. Get your stuff and let’s go! Go now! Go! Let’s go!!” shame was yelling as we all headed back towards the entrance. Then the door shut. “did you just lock us in? He just locked us in!” Glenn yelled starting to panic! Jenner was sitting at a computer talking to the screen. “you son of a bitch! You locked us in here! You locked us in here!” Daryl was yelling as he gunned for Jenner and even as t-dog and Shane were holding him back. Rick started talking to Jenner like he was giving an order “hey, Jenner, open that door now.” “there’s no point. Everything topside is locked down. The emergency exits are sealed.” Jenner explained. “well, open the damm things!” Daryl yelled if only somewhat calmer than before. “that’s not something I control. The computers do. I told you once that front door closed, it wouldn’t open again. You heard me say that. It’s better this way.” Jenner explained. “what is? What happens in 28 minutes? What happens in 28 minutes? Come on!” Rick asked getting more and more angry as he did. Jenner snapped losing his temper “ you know what this place is? We protected the public from very nasty stuff! Weponised small pox! Ebola strains that could wipe out half the country! Stuff you don’t want getting out! Ever! In the event of a catastrophic power failure, in a terrorist attack for example, H,I,Ts are deployed to prevent any organisms from getting out.” “H.I.Ts?” Rick asked “Vi, define.” Jenner ordered. Vi’s voice played out “H.I.Ts – high-impulse thermobaric fuel-air explosives consists of a two-stage aerosol ignition that produces a blast wave significantly greater power and duration than any other known explosive except nuclear. The vacuum-pressure effect ignites the oxygen between 5,000 and 6,000 degrees and is used when the greatest loss of life and damage to structures is desired.” “it sets the air on fire. no pain. An end to sorrow, grief, regret... Everything.” Jenner added.
A few of us where gathered beside the door trying to figure out a way to get it open. Daryl threw his bottle at the metal before yelling to Jenner “open the damm door!” “out of my way! Shane called running up the ramp with an axe before swinging it at the door. T-dog threw to Daryl and he join Shane trying to open the door. We watched him for a while getting more down hearted as it appeared to have no effect on it. We all drifted back towards Jenner after Shane who was explaining to Rick the lack of progress with the doors. “those doors are designed to withstand a rocket launcher.” Jenner explained. “well your head aint!” Daryl yelled gunning for Jenner again. People reacted quickly yelling and grabbing Daryl and pushing him away. “you do want this. Last night you said you knew it was just a matter of time before everybody you loved was dead.” Jenner said to Rick. “you really said that? After all your big talk?” Shane accused. “I had to keep hope alive, didn’t i?” Rick explained. “there is no hope. There never was.” Jenner said. “there’s always hope. Maybe it won’t be you maybe not here, but somebody somewhere.” Rick stated his case. Andrea interrupted “what part of everything’s gone do you not understand?” “listen to your friend. She gets it. This is what takes us down. This is our extinction event.” I’d really lost my temper by this point and was done holding my tongue “ your fucking kidding me right? You’re a fucking scientist you of all people should know that there will be people immune to this... whatever the hell it is! And humans are fucking hard to kill!! We evolve! we adapt! That’s how we got to be the most dominant animal on the planet! So don’t you dare fucking tell me that this is better! Trying to make out like you’re doing us a favour!” I yelled getting closer and closer to him until I could look him dead in the eye while I continued “if you want to end it all fine! But don’t you dare think it’s for the best!” I finished walking away from him and back over to the door, picking up an axe and swinging... soon after Anna joined me on the ramp pulling me into a tight hug while I sobbed. We turned back when we heard a gun get cocked and Rick yell at Shane and Shane yelling back in reply while pointing his gun at Jenner “out of the way Rick! Stay out of my way! Open that door or I’m gonna blow your head off! You hear me?” we couldn’t hear what Rick was saying to him till Shane started to scream Rick was yelling to him “he dies, we all...we all die!” Shane started firing shots around the room as Rick yelled at him and they wrestled over the gun and Rick knocked him to the floor with the butt. “Are you done now? Are you done?” Rick was asking as he stood over Shane. “yer, I guess we all are.” Came Shane’s barely audible reply. After a few moment I pulled myself together and started swinging at the door again. It didn’t take long before Daryl was beside me doing the same. Then suddenly the doors opened again “come on! Let’s go!” Daryl was yelling to the others as he dragged me through the door everyone else was close behind. We grabbed our bags from our rooms and ran to the main entrance.
As soon as we got to the main entrance we tried the door but they wouldn’t open, Daryl and Shane started trying to smash the windows with the axes. T-dog then tried with a chair before Shane yelled to him to get down before attempting to shot the glass, it didn’t even make a dent. “the call won’t break?” Sophia asked before her mother headed towards Rick rummaging in her bag saying “ Rick, I have something that might help.” “Carol, I don’t think a nail file’s gonna do it.” Shane mocked. She continued pulling out a grenade from her bag “your first morning at camp, when I was washing your uniform I found this in your pocket.” “look out!” Shane yelled as we all ran for cover, me and Anna lied in the floor with our arms wrapped around each other for protection and a felt Daryl wrap is arm protectively over me too. There was nothing for a few minutes then we heard Rick exclaiming “oh shhh..” as he ran towards us but was cut of my the explosion as the grenade broke the window. As soon as the sound of falling glass ended we all took off running for the vehicles, Daryl practically dragging me by the arm and me dragging Anna by the hand. We’d just managed to start the pick up when I spotted dale and Andrea running towards the RV. “come on... come on.” I chanted at is watched them get closer and heard Laurie yelling for them to get down just moment before the explosion happened. “did they make it?” Daryl asked once the explosion had finished. I nodded with a smile as I saw them get into the RV. Then we all drove away from the place where the CDC had once stood.
