After a long silence, Naomi rested her chin on her knees and looked at Daryl through a content gaze. She wasn't sad, only a bit put off by remembering what she had gone through only a few months ago. Eventually she cleared her throat, blinking away any negative thoughts before dropping her legs down so that she was sitting normally and looking at him. "What about you? Anyone before this?" Her question was calm, and she watched Daryl's entire body stiffen; his face dropping into a hard gaze directed at the road.
Daryl's grip on the steering wheel tightened until his knuckles paled into a whiter shade, his eyes narrowed in a hard gaze on the road. She may have been fine sharing her life, but it wasn't reciprocated. He shrugged a bit, giving off a short and snappy response before going silent. "Nope."
Naomi looked at him, her lips parted in a slight 'are-you-shitting-me' expression. Her eyes narrowed slightly before clenching her jaw and shaking her head. There she was, telling him things that she thought to be very personal, very painful to remember and the second she flipped the question he refused to have any part in it. She shook her head and looked out the window without another word.
Daryl noticed her change in behavior and his eyes narrowed briefly. He didn't understand how his response could have set her off the way it did, but she looked absolutely livid. Seconds ago she had been perfectly content, smiling and talking and being civil; now she was closed off and stoic. "What?"
"Forget it." Her voice was sharp as she shot him a fairly annoyed glance. She bit down on the inside of her cheek to keep her mouth shut, eyes flicking out the window in attempt to keep herself calm and quiet.
"Gotta be shittin' me." He mumbled, shooting a hard glare in her direction before shaking his head and looking out towards the road. "This is why I stay away from women, all of ya' pissy as hell."
Naomi looked at him as if he'd kicked her dog, her lips parted in slight shock as she gave off a dagger-like glare. She was pissy? Daryl had to have been the grumpiest person she had met since the world had gone to hell, that was saying a lot due to the fact that her own father was one of the grumpiest men alive for a long while. "That's a joke right? The only one here who's pissy as hell is you, you've got this stick shoved so far up your ass I'm sure it hasn't seen daylight in years."
Hearing her words, Daryl's temper flooded out of control nearly immediately as his foot slammed down onto the break. The truck forced itself into an abrupt stop as Naomi's frame jolted forward and slammed into the dashboard. "You watch yer fuckin' mouth or get the hell out of my truck."
Naomi's thoughts went to when they first met, they went to the bruises on her wrists from where his hands had been, or to the one on her elbow from where his grip was too tight. "Why don't you make me, Daryl? You seem real good at doing that." Her voice dripped like poison and she watched his eyes darken.
His hand reached out and grabbed her elbow before roughly yanking her over closer to him. Fear briefly jolted in her heart before she watched realization flood over his face. He'd quickly come to terms with the fact that he was about to harm her, and he sat there with his grip on her elbow relentlessly tight. The two sat there and stared at each other in silence, their faces mere inches apart as the two stayed silent. He could feel her arm trembling in his grasp, and he loosened his grip enough for her to move if she wanted; her arm stayed held by his hand. Naomi swallowed hard, parting her lips as if she were about to speak when the sound of a car horn blared behind them.
The two stayed staring for a few more short moments before Daryl released her arm and tore his gaze away from her. Moving the truck forward, the two of them stayed silent as they drove. Instead of scooting back where she originally was, Naomi stayed at her place closer to his side as the silence held a new kind of tension between the them that neither had ever experienced.
