Michonne nervously walked up the steps to the tower. She inhaled sharply as she pushed open the door. It took a few moments for her eyes to adjust to the complete darkness, but she immediately heard Rick's deep sobs.
"Rick…it's me."
"'Chonne?"
"Yeah, I'm here. What happened?"
"I fucked everything up, 'Chonne. Hershel's here. He said Jackson ran away years ago and he doesn't know where he is or even if he's alive."
"He's here?" She asked.
"Yeah. And I had to tell Lori about our baby because I knew that it would come out in conversation. She needed to hear it from me first."
Michonne walked over and sat next to Rick. "What happened?"
"Remember Shane?"
"Of course."
"We were running from the CDC before it imploded. Damn bat shit crazy doctor there planned on killing us all. He got scratched. A scratch or bite kills you. One of us from the first place we stayed at suffered real bad. Shane didn't want to. He wanted me to end it fast."
Michonne tried to digest what she heard. "Did he say anything? Tell you stuff that was on his mind?"
"Why would he?" Rick asked, between sobs.
"Just wondering. What happened with Lori?"
Rick was quiet for a while before he said "I don't know what happened. Andrea showed me a picture of her and Shane kissing, but it was just Shane giving her a kiss after she cried because she thought I was dead. I was angry."
"You thought she cheated?"
"Yeah."
"Do you really think she'd do that?"
Rick was quietly sobbing, but Michonne could see from the light the moon cast over them that he shook his head no.
"We talked. Her and me. We talked. Rick, how could you treat her like that? She's your wife. If Ty treated me like that I'd kick him to the curb. Do you hate her? You have to. Because no man in his right mind would treat the mother of his children like that. Three kids together. She told me about you pretty quick. She cried so much because of you."
The door cracked open and Ty popped his head in.
"Babe, Andre wants his mama. Dinner's ready."
Rick stood up and the former couple shared a brief hug before going back to the cellblock.
It was cool and dark in the kitchen, the only light was coming from a dozen candles lit around different tables. The aroma of lemon-ginger chicken wafted through the air, and Rick was looking for his wife. Several small, round tables were occupied, AJ was sitting with Becca and Abe, and Lori was sitting with Carl and Judy, with Julia in her arms. Billy, Ben and Allen headed for the table before Rick snapped out of his trance and went to sit with his own family. Allen nodded in defeat, and turned to sit at a table with his sons. Carol, Amy and Sophia later joined him.
Amy was fussy and Andrea was nowhere to be found. "I'll take her," Lori said as she handed Julia to Carol. While Lori started to breastfeed Amy, Rick wanted to take the steps to put the pieces back together.
"I can take her." Rick said to Carol, and couldn't help but notice the look between her and Lori. "Can I take her, Carol?"
"Of course, Rick. She's your daughter." Carol said before handing Rick the five month old and walked away.
There was no way of telling what time it was. The sun set about two hours ago, and the weather was getting cool. The Greenes and the Williams family were getting along well, and blending in with the family at the prison. Abe asked Merle where Daryl and Jessie were, and was told that the pair are still in their cell.
"A week apart will do that for a couple." Abe laughed, as Lori uncomfortably took a sip of water without looking at Rick.
Judy started to cry and fuss while Rick was hold her. He tried to softly sing to her, then stood up and rocked the six month old. Carol came over to take her, and mumbled "She's probably just not used to you." As soon as his daughter left his arms, Julia calmed down.
Rick looked around at the larger prison family, and for the first time he felt like an outsider with his own family. He thought back to that evening. He was reeling from killing Shane, and had to step away and catch his breath. It didn't take Andrea long to come up and wrap her arms around him. At that point she showed him the picture. Then he pushed his own wife to the ground. Over a picture he looked at for a few seconds.
He excused himself and walked away from the table, and just as he was passing Daryl and Jessie in the hallway, he asked for a favor.
At the crack of dawn, the sun slowly filled the prison block with warmth and light.
Lori rolled over and sat up in her bunk, her feet hanging off the side. The early morning haze was fading from her mind, so she jumped down to start the day. Judy was still sleeping, so she used the cell's toilet and washed up before her eyes focused on a clump of wildflowers on the back of the sink. The stems of the flowers were put through her wedding and engagement rings, and underneath the jewelry was a white piece of paper. She slipped the rings back onto her finger and pick up the note, penned in Rick's handwriting. "It's not over for me, it's not even close. I can still picture our future, I see it every night in my dreams, feel it, in my bones, in my heart and in my gut. I love you, Lori. I should have said it. I should have been the man you needed me to be. I'm the world's biggest asshole, but I'm still yours, Lori. Even if you're not mine anymore, I'm still yours. Please forgive me."
Lori wiped her eyes when she was finished reading the note, and since Judy was still sleeping she planned on slipping out of her cell and start the coffee for everyone. Julia was asleep in her pack and play, so she pulled her hair back in a messy pony tail and pushed back the privacy curtain. Rick was sitting in one of the metal chairs, directly in front of Lori's cell. He was sleeping with his arms folded across his chest and his head bent to the right side.
