“And why can’t I go with you?” Liam argued as he followed Dean around the house.
Dean glared at him. “You are seriously asking me this question? Liam, your ribs were broken again, your collarbone was snapped in half! Half your face looks like it was put through a meat grinder for crying out loud. It wasn’t a job that got you hurt, but you are still hurt.” Dean put a hand on Liam’s good shoulder. “I’m sorry, but you’ve got to rest and heal.”
“I’ve still got one good arm I can fight with, and I know you need the man power.”
“Liam,” Sam came up behind him. “I know you hate it, but stay here. Tomorrow Natalie is going to take you to the hearing for the asshole that hit you. That’s important too. We’ll call when we can.”
Tears of frustration spilled down Liam’s cheeks. “I can’t just sit here, not again.”
Dean pulled him close and kissed his forehead. “Please, go against your nature for a little while. I wish there was a magic potion you could take to heal you, but there’s not. It’s gonna take time I’m afraid, Babe.”
Liam sighed. “I tried healing myself the way I healed you when you got stabbed. It didn’t work. What’s the use in being a freak if it doesn’t help me?”
“Um, to help other people?” Dean said. “You saved my life, so I’m still here. For that I am grateful. Again, do something else for me and don’t do anything stupid. Don’t hurt yourself either. I know how being on the sidelines screws with your head, but please don’t let it get to you again. Words cannot express how much I love you and how it would kill me if anything happened to you.”
He pulled Liam into a tender kiss before picking up his bag to leave. Liam watched them go, pounding his head on the door frame. “Stop that!” Natalie yelled at him. “Your brain took enough of a pounding in the accident. Come on, I’ll make you a nice cup of that vanilla chai latte stuff you like so much and we’ll watch some TV while I nurse John before I put him to bed.”
“You don’t need to take care of me,” Liam insisted. “I mean, I’ll need help getting undressed and stuff, but...”
“Sweetie, I like taking care of people. That, and I happen to love you too. I know, spirit is willing, but the body isn’t right now. Come on, sit down and concentrate on healing.”
In the morning Natalie got Liam dressed up in a suit for court and left John with the nanny that they’d hired to take Liam in. It was a pretty quick hearing. Cameras at the stop light had captured everything. When the police arrived the driver’s blood alcohol had been way over the legal limit. It was an open and shut case.
Liam and Natalie were standing outside the court room when it was over and the guy came up to him. “I just wanted to say how sorry I am,” the guy said honestly. “I never thought it would happen, you know?”
Liam just stared uncomfortably at his shoes. Natalie narrowed her eyes. “Well, it did happen,” she said coldly. “You realize you could’ve killed him? Right now our biggest worries are hospital bills and him trying to manage with his arm in a sling. Had things gone just a little bit differently his partner could be planning a funeral. Then what would we have done? Your insurance company is taking care of the hospital bill, but no matter how much money they would’ve thrown at us we can’t go to a store and buy another Liam.”
“I know,” the guy nodded, near tears. “And I am so very sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt him, and I don’t think I could’ve lived with myself had I killed him. I just wanted you to know that.”
Liam finally looked up. “Just do me a favor and don’t do it again, okay?”
“Oh, I won’t,” the man assured him. “I’ve learned my lesson.”
Natalie took Liam out for lunch before taking him home. She had to help him get changed into something more comfortable so he could take a pain pill and lie down until dinner. Some time after dinner Dean called. “Hey, Babe, how are you?”
“Feeling like crap. I can’t do anything, not even help take care of John, and Natalie had to cut the pork roast up for me like I’m some little kid.”
“I’m sorry, but you’ll heal in a few weeks. I’ve got some very good but strange news. We got the Colt back. Crowley just gave it to us. He thinks once Lucifer is done with humans he’ll turn on demons, so he wants the bastard dead as much as we do.”
“Well, if that’s how he feels, demons usually are out for themselves. Now what?”
“Crowley even told us Lucifer was going to be in Carthage, Missouri tomorrow. So, Bobby called Ellen and Jo to help us, and we’re getting really drunk and preparing. Liam, whatever happens, I love you so very much.”
“You don’t plan on surviving this, do you?”
“I won’t lie, the odds are not in our favor.”
“Damn it, Dean! Something this important, and I’m just lying here letting the room spin.”
“Liam, we’ve been over this. You’d just be a hindrance. It sucks that something as stupid as a drunk driver took you out, but that’s life. I’m actually kind of glad you’re safe right now. If we don’t make it back please promise me you’ll heal up and keep fighting.”
“You know I will. And Dean, I love you too, so very much.”
“That’s my crazy bitch. I gotta go. Bye.”
Liam put the phone down and sighed. The next day Liam had to go to physical therapy to keep his arm from getting stiff. It really hurt, but he suffered through it. When they got home Liam headed for the stairs. “Natalie, I’m going to go lie down for a while. Don’t bother waking me for dinner, I’m not hungry.”
Astiratu walked down the streets of Carthage. Reapers were everywhere, and a pack of hell hounds surrounded a hardware store. They turned tail and ran at the sight of him. “Yeah, better run, bitches,” he smirked. He knocked on the store doors. “Hey retards, the really big gun is here!”
Sam peeked out, then let him in. “Not to complain, but what are you doing here?”
Astiratu shot him a look. “You really think I’m just gonna sit on my ass in a broken body while you two run off on a suicide mission?”
Sam sighed. “Since you’re here,” he looked over to Jo bloody on the floor, “can you help her?”
“Who’s that?” Ellen asked.
Dean looked to her. “That would be Astiratu, the giant can of heavenly whoop-ass that resides in Liam’s body, which I hope is safe right now.”
“It’s in bed,” Astiratu assured him. “As long as I’m not gone too long it should be fine.”
“How’d you get past the hell hounds?” Ellen asked.
Astiratu smirked. “They fear me, as well they should. Now, I see we have an injured party that needs attended to.” He knelt down beside her. “Don’t worry child, I look like the devil, but I assure you, I am half angel. Since you are so severely injured this may sting a bit.”
He removed her hand away from the tear in her side and placed his own hand over it. She stiffened and cried out at first, then relaxed. When he removed his hand all that was there was an angry red mark. “Thank you,” she looked up at him.
“You’re quite welcome.” He turned to Ellen. “I couldn’t heal her fully, you’ll need to get her to a safe place to rest for a few days.”
Ellen nodded. “You sure you’ll be all right?”
Astiratu laughed. “Lady, I’m what demons have nightmares about. Your devotion to the cause is appreciated, but I’ve got this.”
Ellen nodded and helped her daughter up. They heard more growling and Astiratu held up his hand. There were three loud pops and dark blood flew everywhere. “Whoa...” Jo’s eyes widened and she looked back at him.
Astiratu chuckled. “That’s nothing.”
When Ellen and Jo were gone Dean turned to Astiratu. “Bobby figures Lucifer is trying to raise the angel of death here. We’ve gotta go kill him before he does that.”
“You can’t,” Astiratu said plainly.
“Sure we can,” Dean pulled out the Colt.
Astiratu rolled his eyes. “Put that thing away. There are five things in creation that thing cannot kill. Archangels like Lucifer are one of them. So am I if you ever find yourself wondering.”
Dean shook his head. “So, you’re saying our one and only hope is useless? Can you kill him?”
“If push came to shove, maybe. Killing archangels is on the big no no list, so I’ve never tried before.”
Dean growled in frustration. “Then what can we do?”
“Our best bet is to stuff the bastard back in his cage.”
“How?” Sam asked.
“Working on that. Obviously he’s not going to go quietly.”
Dean sighed. “So, what, we just run now with our tails between our legs?”
“I didn’t say that. Obviously we put a little stop to his plan. Well, I have to put a stop to him. No offense, love you both, but there’s not much you hairless monkeys can do. Where is he?”
“Bobby said he has to go to an old Civil War battlefield here in town.”
“Alright. Stay here.”
“The hell we are,” Dean said as he grabbed onto Astiratu’s arm. “Get in the car and let’s go.”
They found Lucifer filling in a giant hole with a dozen or so men sanding nearby. They were hiding in some trees when Lucifer turned and smiled. “My favorite half brother. Come on, come out. Your presence is very difficult to disguise you know.”
Astiratu stepped out of the trees. “I know you’re only being friendly with me because you want something, something you will never get no matter how nice you are. You might want to do something quick though because it looks like your vessel is melting a little.”
Lucifer sighed deeply. “Yes, Nick here is wearing a bit thin. I know you are one of the most stubborn creatures in existence, but I don’t suppose you would just this once skip the song and dance and say yes now? I’ll give you the same terms. You get your own little paradise, and those two clowns with you go unharmed, unless I need to defend myself against them of course. That is a very generous offer considering Dean is Michael’s vessel.”
“And my answer remains the same. Go fuck yourself.”
Lucifer chuckled. “You’ll say yes eventually, I just know it. The only question becomes how much is your stubbornness going to cost you?”
A shot rang out and hit Lucifer in the side of the head and he fell. “You lied to me!” Dean shouted as he and Sam came out of the trees.
Astiratu rolled his eyes. “Wait a minute before you gloat and accuse.”
Lucifer’s eyes opened and he sat up. “That’s very good advice. Astiratu here, on the rare occasion he truly cares for someone, he can’t lie. Bend the truth a little, sure, but outright lie, there’s something in his wiring that prevents that.” With a wave of his hand Dean went flying into a tree. Sam ran to check on him.
“I thought you said you wouldn’t harm them,” Astiratu’s eyes narrowed.
“I said I wouldn’t harm them if you said yes to me. You said no again, so they’re fair game.” Astiratu lowered his eyes and Lucifer smirked. “See, now I’m in your head. Love is a weakness you were cursed with along with the humans.”
“What did you do to this town?” Sam demanded.
Lucifer turned to him. “Oh, I was very generous with this town. One demon for every able bodied man.”
“And the rest?” Sam asked.
“In there,” Lucifer motioned to the hole he was filling in. “I know, it's awful, but these horsemen are so demanding. So it was women and children first.”
Astiratu shook his head. “Hate to waste their sacrifice, but you should know as well as anyone I can’t let you do this.”
“What are you going to do, kill me?”
Astiratu shrugged. “Maybe.”
Lucifer turned toward Dean on the ground, but before he could do anything a brilliant lightning bolt crashed down from the clear sky and struck Lucifer, holding his convulsing body a little over a minute before vanishing. The smell of badly burnt flesh hung in the air and the flesh was literally melting and peeling off Lucifer. Lucifer growled and disappeared.
Astiratu swooned and fell on his ass. All the demons turned to them looking angry. “Now what?” Sam looked to Astiratu.
“I’ve got some juice left,” Astiratu said as he raised a hand. A thin jolt of electricity jumped to the nearest demon, then spread through the crowd. Fire erupted from their mouths and the men collapsed. Astiratu fell on his back on the ground.
Sam went over to him. “Are you okay?”
Astiratu nodded. “I just need to rest for a little while. On the bright side I hurt Lucifer pretty good. With his vessel falling apart he won’t be doing much for a week at least. Take care of Dean and I’ll see you soon.”
Astiratu disappeared and Liam was roughly shaken awake by Natalie. “Liam!” she shouted. “Please wake up!”
Liam groaned and opened his eyes. “Yeah, what?”
Natalie stood back. “You scared the crap out of me, that’s what. I came up to wake you for dinner and you wouldn’t stir for anything. I was afraid you did something again. I even checked your pulse and it was racing like crazy for a minute.”
“Oh,” Liam blinked. “Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you. I told you I didn’t want dinner.”
“You may not want it, but you still need to eat. You didn’t manage to do something, did you?”
“No,” Liam assured her. “I didn’t try to kill myself. I feel like I just ran a marathon, but otherwise fine. I’ll come eat.”
After he finished eating Dean called. “How are you, Babe?”
“Really tired, but okay. Did you kill the devil?”
“No. Our angel friend hurt him, but that was the best we could do. This is gonna be more complicated than we originally thought, but don’t lose hope. We’re gonna hole up in a motel here for the night, but then we’re coming home, okay?”
“Okay. I love you.”
“I love you too, Babe. Bye.”
